Screen shuts off in daylight after latest update (April 2021) - Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Guides, News, & Discussion

So the most recent update in early April 2021 (AT&T version G781USQU3DUCB) broke the screen.
In daylight, the screen will suddenly flicker a few times and then shutoff. If I press the power button twice it comes back on to the lock screen, I unlock it and it immediately shuts off.
Temporary solution is to turn off adaptive brightness (but even with adaptive brightness turned off, if you turn the screen manually to full brightness it will do the same thing).
See more info in a few other places. linked below.
Putting it here in case you didn't notice it elsewhere and perhaps some xda experts can shed some light on this.

S20 fe 5g flickering when light hits the view finder
My screen flickers and goes blank when sunlight hits the view finder on the phone. In the house or shade it doesn't do that. I can even use a flash light and point it at the view finder and it flickers and the screen goes blank.

Try a factory reset. I avoid updates... still running well on Pie

ATT just released an update G781USQU3DUD4, we'll see later if that fixed the issue.

it's firmware related, quite a few posts popped up on reddit r/GalaxyS20FE just after the April ''security'' update that was 700 plus mbs.
there's also a long standing touch issue, a scrolling screen judder issue and some camera lag. the 4G users have heating and battery life issues. LOTS of unhappy campers over there. quite a few YouTube videos on the FE's bugs too.

That sucks... no easy way to uninstall a OS update.
One of the reasons I package blocked updates over a year ago. So far no real security issues running on Pie... just a stable, fast running device.
Recent Android (Apple flavored, yuck) upgrades are more like downgrades.

If it's not fulfilling its mission get a version flashed that works for you.
In the end that's all that counts.
Even with all its cpu cycle sucking "security" both 10 and 11 users still can fall prey to their biggest security threat; themselves

So far it seems the update fixed the issue, (tested in daylight with no issues so far - but no sunlight in the forecast until tomorrow )
Overall I'm very satisfied with the phone (my previous phone was an LG G5 so I'd probably be happy with any recent phone), have not noticed any of the other issues people complain about.
And happy to see Samsung respond and fix this fairly quickly (of course without ever even acknowledging that there is an issue). (coming from LG where an update would mean wait 6 months if I'm lucky)

Lolipop Memory Issues Poll: T-700

I can't make a poll thread from Tapatalk I guess, so I'm just looking for comments.
I got the notice to download the 5.0 update today. I'm hesitant to do so due to the many issues reported for other devices. I have a 2012 Nexus 7 that had serious issues until google released the update to 5.1. I do not want to repeat that experience (it took months of waiting).
I have the US version of the 8.4 inch Tab S.
For those of you who have installed the update, have you noticed any issues, specifically memory related? I am not looking for opinions about whether you like Lolipop, so I would request only comments regarding what differences, if any, you notice in how the tablet is running after the update.

I have the U.S. Tab S 8.4 WiFi and updated to Lollipop. It's running smooth and snappier than KitKat. I haven't noticed any memory issues with it. Battery life is good so far, on par with how it was under KitKat for me.
Thanks. I would hope samsung would make certain the update would not cause this problem, but you never know! It's pretty well documented at this point.

Mine reboots constantly. Garbage.
So we've got one person who updated without problems and one who is having reboots. Who else has taken the update and what experience did you have?
Also, does anybody know what the options are to downgrade if it turns out that 5.0 does have a lot of problems?
No problems on my S 8.4. I also have Touchwiz Lollipop (5.0.1) on my Galaxy S4 with no problems. I read somewhere that the memory leak issue was only a problem on AOSP builds, not OEM (Samsung, HTC, etc) releases. I don't know if that's true. I'm 100% happy with Lollipop on my S 8.4.
all good here. like the changes from lollipop and touchwiz doesn't seem as bad from what people make it out to be. wish you could uninstall some apps tho.
Originally, I had a 2012 Nexus 7. After installing 5.0, it became unusable. I tried almost everything I read to no avail. Actually, it had started slowing down and having and having random app crashes b4 that, but it got much worse after installing 5.0
I gave up on it and bought the Tab 8.4, which I'm loving. Several weeks later, I went back to the Nexus 7 and used Wug's Toolkit to wipe and install 5.1.1. That has actually seemed to fix my issues with that tablet. Now I'm thinking perhaps I didn't need to get the Samsung, but oh well. I like the larger screen (I always said tablets should come in 8 inches, not 7), the rear camera, and the responsiveness. I'm keeping it!
Because of my negative experience with 5.0, I was hesitant to install this update. However, I installed it yesterday and so far (after 24 hours), it seems to be fine. I like being able to see my notifications on the lock screen again. It still appears to be snappy. It has not been long enough for me to judge battery time yet. So far it looks good.

Why not root it? Then you could uninstall anything you want to.
After the update it was all good with my tablet, smoth and fast.
Now it's getting worse, Nova launcher is always crashing, sometimes it reboots by itself, lag came back and some apps freeze...
I hope that Samsung release a new update.
Does the OTA update work with root installed?, I have the T800.

There's some apps/games that don't work on rooted devices so I had to keep it stock.
I updated OTA to 5.02 and had no problems. Tab is as quick as before.
I noticed a slight increase in ram usage (from around 1400 to 1700 mb) Now after medium use it hangs around 2GB. Until now I didnt see a problem with that.
Battery usage seems a little better (but thats alway subjective) I had a problem that the charging percentage went from 85% to 100 % in a couple a minutes. Now, connected to USB it charges 1% every 5-6 minutes. and it does so also from 85%-100% There are some slight things I dont like about 5 but again thats to subjective.
One of the things I loke is that its now possible to switch of notifications per app. I hated apps that which me "Goodbye and hope to see you soon, sleep well, say hello to your wife"

So, if I understand, you're saying that you're seeing higher RAM usage with 5.0, but it hasn't caused any problem? Also, for me charging on KitKat is very fast. Does your tab charge as fast on Lollipop as it did before?

Is the jelly effect fixed? is MM update on verizon yet?

Hi, pretty much like the title asks. Just ordered a G4 because I love the manual camera options. But can't afford the G5. But curious if they ever hammered out the problems with the video recording on the G4 where the OIS creates a jelly effect? Also curious if the G4 has an update to Marshmallow for the verizon carrier yet? Can't wait for my G4 to get here but I think it's taking the scenic route on it's way to me.
Sorry after getting a chance to check the forums here I found that the Marshmallow update appears to have been released. But still curious on the jelly effect since I can't find anything past I think it was june of 2015? back when people noticed the problem. I found one forum where a person said the got a reply from LG saying they were aware of it and were working on a fix but still can't find anything saying whether or not it ever was.
51 views and no reply? No one has the G4 anymore that they can take out of their pocket and test? Thought I was in the right section to ask. Guess I'll just have to wait until mine gets here tomorrow and update it to marshmallow to find out. Thanks anyway though.

i think u have to wait to someone that actually, have update to MM, the most of the users, we decide to wait, because actually there´s no way to root MM, so we decide to stay with Lollipop and root.

Makes sense. I was thinking it was more known after reading through this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/general/6-0-update-t3316281 But yeah I didn't take into account that the ones that had acutally viewed this thread were only root users. So I'll keep an eye on this thread and see if anyone pops in before I get my G4. I'm still a little torn at whether to upgrade to marshmallow or not. I hear it fixes touch screen issues and adds wifi calling and makes things smoother. But I've also heard it kills the battery and that either verizon or LG decided to be greedy and not allow the SD card to be used as internal storage like other marshmallow handsets manufactures or carriers. Can't remember what that feature is called though off the top of my head. And since I don't understand where to start on the whole kdz thing at rooting the phone before it upgrades to marshmallow I'll have to just leave that alone and use stock lollipop or stock marshmallow. As for the battery issue I'll have to check around to see if their is a slim extra mah battery that still allows me to use my leather back. But thanks again.
*UPDATE* Checking back in. Got my G4 earlier this morning. Battery was dead when I opened it so charged it to 100 then turned it on. Straight away it wanted me to apply a 400mb update. Then once it restarted it straight away downloaded and installed the MM update. So I didn't get to play with it much on lollipop. I did note that within the first 10 minutes before the first update started the battery had dropped 3% now with MM on there it is too soon to tell if it will have battery problems since it's still on it's first charge. But after the 400mb update then the 1gb update then clearing cache and hard factory resetting it and then installing apps etc that I had on my old phone and disabling other useless apps and taking pictures and videos to test the OIS. The battery is currently at 30% with a total on screen time of 1h 30m =39% On the bright side when I tested recording at HD and UHD I did not notice any jelly effect. Aside from the battery seeming to drain quickly I'm very happy with this phone and it's low light camera capabilities. And with that said the only thing I think I'll miss on my S5 is the extra battery life. I know I'm not a high rank member here but if anyone still on root or still on lollipop has any questions about the OTA MM update let me know and I'll see if I can answer.

Watch the G4 on the left when he starts walking. Watch the trees and how they wobble. The problem was the G4 has the optical image stabilization OIS that aggressively tried to make video smooth when moving. I'm still not sure if it's fixed. I'll be testing it more tomorrow when it's daylight to where I can walk outside and see what happens.

tl;dr battery seems good at close to 3.5 hours screen on time. and OIS seems to have been improved.
OK, Back again. Did testing like I said I would. The OIS optical image stabilization didn't seem to have as much of a problem as I've seen in other videos. I did three tests at all sizes. the hd/fhd/uhd and none seemed to have any problem with a jelly effect. Although the video seemed to be grainy when uploaded to youtube to view in a different place than the phone. Even while viewing in the 4k resolution (side note my monitor doesn't support 4k but I put it on it anyway) as for the battery running MM and running everything the same way I did my S5 I pulled in a respectable 3h 28m 40% screen on time. measuring from 8am off charger to current time 6:56 when the battery hit 15% and indicated it needed charged. I removed smart notifications widget in the middle of the day and kept screen brightness at 20%. wifi varried as I was in and out of the house today. GPS was on all day. So tomorrow I'm hoping I'll gain even more life by having the smart notifications as well as the GPS off. Not sure if any of this info matters to anyone but I'm keeping my word and letting everyone know the results I said I was testing for.

Is March Update out ?

Updates usually come on 5th of each month(-ish),
We currently need an update urgently;
focus in camera, battery life , call quality, dt2w, and several other known bugs need to be fixed, I really hope there's a March update that's released this week. If it exists and is out in your region, which country are you in? and do you notice anything different about the system?
PS: Devs pls enable Camera 2 API, thank u.

Pixels usually get em on the 5th each month, Android One devices get them some days later, usually around the 14th or even at the end of month.
Camera 2 API probably will never be enabled by Xiaomi, they want to sell their higher priced models which have enabled it by default. And it's
a matter of seconds to enable it by yourself with root/temporary root.
btw: Battery life is excellent on my side, same like with Oreo. 3-4 days per charge with around 8-9h SOT.
Mid-March as usually like in Feb Patch.
Update is out ,I haven't received it yet, let's hope it fix some issues, mostly the battery drain, 9 hours with oteo and 5 with pie for me...
Due to the low cost of this phone, I have absolutely no expectations that:
1. Updates will arrive on time, even though it's an Android One phone.
2. Bugs that aren't critical to its daily usage will get fixed, even small annoyances.
3. Any non-critical visual fixes will be done.
4. Anything beneficial from 8.1 will come back.
I'm not mad either, this has been a great phone, especially for $159. It punches way above its price point. Now with my Sony a6500 I can just connect to its hotspot anywhere and download RAW images that blow the Pixel 3 out of the water.
Anyway, no update on west coast USA as of 07:44AM.
hey buddies, is it normal that in my a 2 lite after 5 months battery life after 4 hours SoT he has capacity 38% ? i'm bit worried that's why i'm asking
It's fault of Android Pie, if you rollback to Oreo you will have 9 hours SoT again, but for me some Bluetooth devices are not working properly..

i used to root/ unlock / modify every phone i had since 2008, with this one i leaved everything to stock to avoid problems, and i'm having a user experience totally different from yours, and i'm not the only one! you are a lucky guy, i've nothing else to say.
If this update isn't gonna fix the problems i've encountered i'm gonna sell it, even underpriced.

Do you play games on your phone throughout the day? Are you using heavy animations with a launcher? Do you use social media apps on your phone?
I watch YouTube, use Signal, Slack, Firefox for Reddit & Twitter and average 10-11hr SOT. No social media apps otherwise. Not a gamer really and nothing I do takes major resources. Pokemon Go is the most resource heavy thing I do and if I keep that on I can go 5-6 hours SOT, though I don't play often especially during colder seasons in the northern hemisphere.
I really wish VoLTE & WiFi calling worked, otherwise this phone has taken over my Pixel without any real downsides except USB-C and Band 12. Camera is beyond acceptable for $179, though now I personally just carry around my Sony A6500 and link it in seconds to transfer way higher quality pictures between. I know that's not possible for a lot of people, but the stock camera is very acceptable.
I have another one sitting in my desk brand new I might turn into a development phone.
Let me know if you sell it, I might be interested.
Still no March update in USA.
I play Candy crush maybe 30 minutes a day, and I don't have social apps installed. I'm embittered because I'm using the phone the same way I did since I bought it, after the pie update my SoT was reduced by 30%, and I can confirm it because I tried a rollback to Oreo that solved this issue (and the one with some aes protected wifi), but I had problems with Bluetooth.

120hz lag for lack of better terms.

Here is what I notice time to time. The screen kind of Flickrs or just lags for a split second. Anyone else notice it while on 120hz, anyone know of a solution?
S20 plus US model.
I have the exact same problem. It often happens when I am scrolling.
It is as if it freezes for a split second and then it catches up creating some kind of ghosty lag. Is that the same as your experiencing?
Strange thing is that - before using s20 ultra - I also noticed it on the galaxy S10 since the Android 10 update.
S20 Ultra - EU Model (exynos)
I have noticed that on my Exynos S20 as well, but it only happens when the phone hits 38-39 degrees Celsius, so I am assuming throttling is responsible
That's interesting. Any suggestions for a good app to keep track of the temperature? Or can I see it somewhere in standard settings?

I kind of assumed this only happens on the Exynos version, for which reason I wanted to sell mine and get a Snapdragon variant. Interesting to know that it happens to both variants. I assumed and read some reports that this issue was fixed in the ATE6 update, but I doubt it. Maybe I should have just bought a OnePlus 8 Pro
Not seeing this with my S20U Exynos, but I have it set to High Performance 24/7 also on the latest ATE7 June 1st update

I'm browsing and using different things on the phone most of the day, still never noticed anything like it, 120hz is butter smooth with pretty much everything other than known stuttery apps like the play store but that's the app not the phone
That happened to me when I used Tasker to dynamically switch between 120/60 Hz on per-app basis. I disabled that task, set to 120 Hz permanently, and haven't seen the screen flash since.

When that stuttering starts, it happens across the whole device, it only stops when the phone cools down. I have stopped using 120Hz mode just cause of this reason. The Exynos is a real mess, gets to above 40 Celsius from normal browsing. I'm surprised so little people have noticed this 120 stutter.

Factory reset it 3 times. This is a thing that also happens to Snapdragon users, so the blame is also on Samsung's software, as it starts happening at a certain temperature.

Question Micro lags / jitters

These micro lags makes the phones processor feel like it's from 2018, can't scroll through anything without having all these micro lags and jitters, same with light gaming, I don't think this processer can handle to much?
If the next update doesn't fix these issues then I don't think they will be fixed?
I haven't had this problem in the last two months I've been using the phone. My wife hasn't complained about her games - I generally don't game very much.
Have never once felt a jitter or lag.....not once. For me this phone has been a pleasure to use. I rooted right out of the box and have since done an update and switched to another rom without a hitch really. except one hiccup i was having with a bootloop. Which proved to be me not disabling mods before the flash. I absolutely love this phone. I am not seeing any of the issues that people are reporting. I also believe that a LOT of reports are bogus. ( Not saying that this is the case here).
I think these "jitters/lag" you are experiencing are due to the framerate getting locked to 60hz. This happens with mine ever day or two. After a reboot it will be smooth. My guess is there is a "bug" from an app or something causing the framerate to lock at 60hz, rather than the 120hz. I haven't quite figured out how to resolve, other than a reboot. It is quite annoying, and I am hoping a future update (if we ever get one!) will fix it.
I've noticed lag when typing. I do use gboard as most of the people do. I do type with two languages activated. Every now and then the phone lags for about a second.
I thought google had already acknowledge that the phone does lag when the battery percentage drops.
Something about accessibility and animations as far as I remember.
Lol that's the first thing I noticed straight from a clean setup twice, Cod mobile is a jittery mess but perfectly fine on my OP 8 Pro and every time I swiped left for Google now it would jitter, Not all the time but it did do it frequently.
Cod mobile was jittery as hell for me as well. After the Dec update it is not jittery anymore but playing on it is really weird. I can't get used to it so i still play on my Poco x3
Mine studders for sure a few times a day for a few seconds. Factor reset didn't help. This phone feels like it's 8 years old with the stutters and the fingerprint reader that doesn't work.
Very smooth experience for me for gaming and all my everyday tasks.

Yeah my OnePlus Nord gen1 runs far smoother than this phone lol, so weird, if it's not fixed by the next update then I'm selling it for galaxy s21 Fe 5g, SD 888

I think some people are in denial about this handset to be honest, Ok be thing I have learned over the years never trust the usual YouTubers they know who they are and are scripted.

Well the fact they can't even roll an update out without bricking people's phones kind of says it all really, The software features this device is missing will never get added by Google never it's not in their nature they couldn't care less what the user thinks.
You have to check the Google forums to see most complaint threads have been locked by admins to give you an idea of how little **** they give.

That is another possibility and another reason why I hate Google phones they don't even have refresh rate locks just a "Smooth" option but still jitters.
Just found another bug lol try scrolling fast in opposite directions in messages it just freezes and gets confused and sits there like it can't understand fast opposite direction of scrolling lol, Amazing how these devices get released in these states really.

I no and people dis oneui, Samsung have came such a long way to be honest, at least they're phones are smooth and the extra features that's on oneui is what the consumers asked for, even with all the added features it doesn't hinder battery life, yah can't even screen cast on this phone without a chrome cast, people say about a clean stock software but but what's the point, not like as if it's better battery and performance, I get better performance and battery out of my S20 Fe 5g

They definitely didn't "brick" from the update. Do you know what "brick" means?

can't scroll through anything without having all these micro lags and jitters

If a scrollable list is implemented as a scrollview, data will be loaded into it dynamically, AS you scroll through it. Depending on the speed and latency of the data source (for example, loading over the network), and the complexity of generating each element, you may occasionally scroll beyond the loaded data, requiring an interruption that you might perceive as a "lag" or "jitter".
So really there can be two causes that do NOT imply a CPU performance issue; data source, and bad code. A competent programmer can load data from the network in a more effective manner and ensure that processing overhead is minimized, thus reducing the negative effects.
Unfortunately, with mobile, like web, competent programmers are like a drop of water in the ocean.
