Not to sound like a broken record but with no play services do Google Photos and app updates work with that "sandboxed Play services compatibility layer" mentioned on they site?

yes. works very well (as long as you install all 3 parts of sandboxed play services). I would maybe wait a few days before installing it on the Pixel 6. but using A12 on my 3xl and everything works, photos, gboard, official gcam (all running with network access disabled).
Also, GrapheneOS for Pixel 6 still says Experimental on their download page (it might just need to be updated). But if you're okay with maybe experiencing some bugs, it should work fine (but as stated above, most should wait a few days, they're very good on updating - especially the first few weeks after release)

Good to hear about... will be watching! cheers

I basically bought my P6P for this, so I'm extremely happy development is moving forward! Really hoping that, when a stable version is out, it will be possible to use the phone "normally" with it. Keep it up, Graphene team!

I'm with @Alex-Absolute I purchased my P6 just for GrapheneOS support, coming from a string of OnePlus devices. Though I am going to wait until it's listed as stable to switch, I'm excited they have a working build going!

I've got the release page in Windows' Aignes Website-Watcher, set to look for changes after "Pixel 6 Pro" and before "Version", so I should know when it changes to Stable.

I used GrapheneOS on my 4a during most of the Experimental days, and i did not experience 1 hicup. I would compare their Experimental Builds to Android 12 Beta. So it's nothing to be afraid of. It's definitely ready for daily use in my own opinion....

Are there any screenshots of this OS? I always like trying new things but I'm thinking there isn't much to look at that would be different from a standard Android OS

You're welcome, I'm using the free version - it's been around for a very long time on Windows, and I'm using the Android app which appears to more or less sync with the Windows version through Dropbox, if you have or create an account with Dropbox. It doesn't work perfectly for me, but I at least get notifications on my phone about the same changes in websites that the Windows program lets me know about - so I at least know that I should get on the computer and look to see what's new.
Sorry to anyone for the OT - I have lots of Android-related sites set to give me notifications of changes through this program.
The non-free version is a little pricey for my needs.

I've wanted to switch to this for a long time (It's actually a huge reason I switched back to the Pixel series) but I'm not sure if I can commit to losing Android Auto

I agree. I've been using it off and on for 18 months on different pixels. but just good to be cautious, as always...
GrapheneOS just tweeted a few hours ago, the next release will be Stable for the 6 series (most likely this week)

What I read about that is that its not experimental in the "unstable" sense, its that they haven't fully implemented the security enhancements.

Given the sandboxed mode for play services, do you really have to lose auto?

Good question. Last time I looked into it, AA was a no-go. Guess there's only one way to find out. I'll report back later if it works or not
UPDATE: Still a no-go. I just receive an error that the AA protocol isn't supported. Guess I'll go back to compromising my privacy for the sake of convenience while driving.
Other than that+call screeening, this build is solid for an "experimental" build (Tbh they could have put the stable flag on this, but I assume they are waiting for bug reports before doing so). If anyone is looking for a good de-Googling solution, this is it.

Despite the hassle and increased expense, perhaps one of those Carplay AI boxes like Apple Pi might be the necessary workaround?
I'm very interested in this OS, but I too rely on carplay/auto as a general rule while driving. If I have to outsource my maps and music to an external box in order to have more comprehensive device security, that might just be the way it has to be.

Thank you for reporting. As curious as I am about this OS, this rules this out for me too. Been using AA for almost four years now and I'm hooked.

I want privacy, but I cannot live without syncing all my stuff together. Is this OS for me?

(Discussion) how are your impression of android 8.0 on pixel c?

As you all know Google has rolled out android Oreo to the masses , including the pixel c . I've got the notification on may tablet but too afraid to click install since 7.1.2 working really well for me . My main concern is battery life , being burned with 7.0 before I rather weary of the new software update to 8.0 . I'm using my tablet primary to take notes on lectures so I need a solid battery life.
Can any of you give me an impression of performance and general usability of pixel c with android Oreo installed ? I am using stock pixel c without and root or modifications
Android O works like a charm on my Pixel C. The performance is good, generally no stuttering, lagging etc. Microsoft Word isn't working though, Google Docs saves the day. I use the tablet for notes in lectures too, and I easily get a day and a half of use.
Edit: I'm on stock Oreo, no root, no mods.

It's nice to know . I'm using quid as my primary note taking app . The Oreo impression is generally best across all pixel devices except for people who wanted all of the new feature on their Nexus 5x. . . Anyways thanks for giving your input!
I guess I'll wait a couple of weeks before attempting to update . My exam is coming soon and I cannot accept change in my tablet yet.
P.s this forum is really quiet isn't it ?
Your welcome
I can imagine Android O isn't the best match with Nexus 5x. I had the 5x for a couple of months and all it did was throttle and stutter. My old Nexus 5 is way better on Nougat.
Yes, it's a little too quiet her here, hopefully it picks up.
OT: I tried to find Quid in Play Store, the only app I found was Quidd, a virtual sticker collector app in beta. Can't imagine it works well as a note app. Could you please guide me in the right direction?

I haven't actually used Netflix or Youtube, so I can't help you there. I enrolled in the beta program at dp4 and received an OTA of the public Oreo release about a week ago.
Only been on Oreo for a few days since installing and seems to be ok, no issues.
Doesn't "seem" to be a major update.

What's the issue with Microsoft Word? Is it something that's gonna be fixed soon you think?

both apps work fine for me under Oreo. Would cleaning cache for these apps fix your white screens?

Clearing cache only gives me force close when trying to start the app. Force close is better than a white screen though.
Installed my OTA update to Oreo from Nougat 7.1.2 today. No issues so far but haven't really done alot either and update went smoothly.
I did notice that this Oreo update also shows a Updating Firmware splash screen that I've never noticed in other updates. Did I just not see them or is this new? What was changed in the FW?
I installed the update....
and apart from a oddity, where the update screen seemed to get stuck in a loop looking for further updates (I had to shut the pixel c down, and start it back up, to fix this)..it's been a fantastic update so far, very smooth and far more fluid. Everything seems to be a bit snappier, and it seems to be loading webpages and youtube more efficiently, and quickly..
BUT!!...I wouldn't recommend you update immediately if you, can't afford for anything to go wrong, as i tend to find that something will be broken somewhere, that we're not yet aware of (like Picture in Picture crashing when you try to use it)....
Maybe wait until you've got all your important stuff, out of the way before you update...
Hope this helps?

nah , it´s okay. To be expected really. after all next month pixel c will be 2 years old.
No, afaik project treble will be available only on phones launching with O.
About my experience, the update seems pretty nice so far. The performance is about the same. I never had lag or bad perf on this tablet honestly. The only problem I have had are two random reboots two days ago. The rest is fine.
As with all major revisions of android, it will take some time before all the apps are fully compatible with the Os and use the new APIs.
So I flashed in fastboot and run magisk. There is a weird situation when you reboot to go into recovery it says it is flashing firmware, I not seen that message before.
Magisk works, passes safetynet check.
I saw mention that Word crashes, well that is still true initially, when I open a document, it opens then then closes again, tried it 3 times then it stayed open, something about needing to download fonts? So it works eventually.
Battery status is weird, when plugged into power it is says is it NOT charging, when I pull USB cable out, it says it is charging. Small bug, but what you expect for version 0 of 8.
Chrome closes and reopened a few times, but then settled.
I rolled back from clean Oreo to Pure Nexus 7.1.2.
The main reason why is unbearable lags in Youtube app - when the active video is minimized and you want to browse Youtube it's just completely unusable. I think couple of times it stayed this way even without a background video.
Overall I was not happy with the performance so went back to Nougat and the difference is night/day.

Solution: Uninstall Aurora and reinstall it from F-Droid.
Before I dive in, 2 questions:
- I'm still runnin the december update, do I need to update to the januari update before I can flash Calyx?
- Is there a way to backup my current install?
Edit: I bit the bullet anyways, first updating to the Januari update, painless process, btw. I decided that I didn't care about a backup.
First impressions: Very nice looking and I saw pretty quickly that within CalyxOS you can back stuff up outside of the bootloader.
Had the 'Aurora store' bug, fixed after reinstalling it.
Gonna love exploring the OS in the coming days.
I have one question about a launcher: I have the paid version of Nova Launcher, and I'm logged into Aurora anonymously, so I can't DL paid apps. Does anyone have an alternative to Nova Launcher? I absolutely love this app (the gestures etc. are a dream) so preferably a FOSS alternative with close to the same functionality would be awesome. I have been able to migrate to FOSS/free apps for all of my paid ones, but I still can't find anything better as a launcher.
Edit2: Might have been nice for them to put a warning before flashing that it will completely wipe your phone.. I made a few last minute backups on the internal storage before flashing. Everything is lost now. Luckily I back stuff up often, but I still lost stuff, so a warning from them might've been nice.
Edit3: I now can't log into my google account (for retrieving my whatsapp backup Fixed by using another phone and copying the local backup to my Pixel) because it can't connect to the server... know error apparently, but I can't find a fix for it.
Why oh, why, do I always decide to try this stuff on a sunday evening when I should go to bed...

Just got the februari update.. the most painless update I've ever had on a smartphone. Really digging CalyxOS.
About the adblockers; I already run a 'normal' VPN, so VPN based ablocking won't work, right?
Some other random questions:
Any suggestions for (preferably FOSS) keyboards? I currently use love swiftkey, but I refuse to sign up to download skins, can't seem to restore my backup, and I don't trust Microsoft. I can't seem to find a lot of open source ones.
I also have some shared calendars from google that I unfortunately need to use, but I don't want to sign in to google on my phone. Any tips to get this to work? I can import regular google calendars into my nextcloud, but not the shared ones.

About the adblockers with VPN - you can utilize "Secure DNS" option in Android. I highly recommend NextDNS or BlahDNS for no-logging, adblocking DNS service.
As for the keyboards, there are AnysoftKeyboard (has swipe), OpenBoard and FlorisBoard. I am using Anysoftkeyboard and I am pretty happy. I'm beta testing it, and new version should be out soon. Also, Calyx has a firewall feature that allows you to block internet access for any app you want. Just go to the Settings -> Apps and then Data Usage and you can block Swiftkey from there. Calyx Team is currently working on a better UI for firewall, should be out in the following months.

I'm liking Anysoftkeyboard so far. I only wish you could remove the smilie and voice buttons, that would make the spacebar a bit wider.
Will the scureDNS stuff work nicely with a VPN, since they use their own ones, AFAIK. I got it to work, just wondering if it doen't mess with the security of the VPN.

I love using Anysoft Keyboard
I just tried calyxos first time it today myself for 8 hours today. It ha sbeen very nice so far, although most of that 8 hours went in to setting everything up.
Soemthing I hate is that the google camera apk from aurora store is super old.. Ibut that is not calyxos fault.. Probably not that the small arrow to lower the keyboard is ont he left side and doesnt seem to be adjustable either..?
Will have to look around for some safe place to download a more recent gcam or I guess use some port.. Too bad I heard the ports are always buggy and bad and since I got a true pixel for the first time ever I was looking forward to run it with the best possible camera software.

I went ahead and installed the latest official Google camera software from apkmirror. I didnt want to go through the rabbithole of finding what port is the least broken, while also getting the latest and greatest update wise..
Altough now that I've used it for a few days im suspecting I don't have HDR. I cant find any options with HDR anywhere in the app, so maybe something wrong as I heard that if you run googles own gcam on custom roms (I guess calyxos as well?) You loose HDR?
Also its quite annoying that you have to use Google photos to o preview the pictures and I don't want to use that.

I guess that is why people are porting the app. I have working HDR (at least the option is here and can be switched, how to make sure that hdr is ok btw?) and I can check the photos with the alternative gallery apps, or at least with the default gallery. There is an option in GCam to allow using gallery other that Google Photo.
May I ask why Google photo is a problem? Looks like you can block all privacy-concerning behaviors...
Then, more generally, I am running CalyxOS with default microG settings on this device since two weeks and everything is just perfect. All is working perfectly and the battery consumtion is really good.
Great job! Perfect ROM for me on this device.

Exciting! I just went ahead and downloaded the gcam mod you linked to, latest version.
I was already quite happy with the camera just moving from a xiaomi Mi 8 with lineage - using the f-droid open camera only.. Totally worthless experience imo..
At first glance there is definetly more options here including HDR. However the third party picture viewer is still not optional..
Honestly you are right I could use google photos and just remove internet access but I would rather not.. But if Im forced I guess I must.. Did you do anything special to get third party gallerys to work?
About the calyxos on pixel 4a 5g .. I absolutely LOOOOVE it man.. It is lightyears ahead of lineage experience that Ive had past 2 years. Love it!

General XDA article: Google reportedly working on tap-to-transfer feature for media in Android 13

https://www.xda-developers.com/android-13-tap-to-transfer/
January 10, 2022 3:59pm Corbin Davenport
Google reportedly working on tap-to-transfer feature for media in Android 13Android 12L hasn’t been officially released yet, but that isn’t stopping Google from working on the next major release, Android 13 (which is internally codenamed “Tiramisu”). We’ve already covered some of the features currently in the works for Android 13, but now details are public about another possible change — a “tap to transfer” feature for media playback.
Android Police has shared a supposed Google UI demo mockup for a new feature in Android 13, labelled as a “Media TTT” workflow — the “TTT” part is for “tap to transfer.” The screenshots show off a small message at the top of the display, which reads “Move closer to play on DEMO” in one image, and “Playing on DEMO” on the other. The latter popup also has an Undo button, presumably in case you accidentally walk close to a speaker and don’t want your music to start playing on it.
There aren’t any other details available besides what you see in the above screenshots. The functionality might work similarly to the ‘Hand off audio’ feature on Apple’s HomePod smart speakers, which allows you to hold an iPhone or iPod Touch close to a HomePod to set the speaker as the output. That feature uses a combination of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but it’s not clear what mechanism Google will use if this functionality actually makes it into Android 13. Google could add this to the Chromecast functionality in Android, or bring it to standard Bluetooth wireless audio, or both. It’s unclear what technology this feature will use to share files.
Assuming a similar schedule as previous years, Android 13 will likely start rolling out in the fall of this year, with developer previews and beta releases in the coming months. Android 12L is supposed to arrive sometime before the end of Q1 2022, which can be anytime from now until March 31. Android 12 is still slowly rolling out to phones and tablets — Sony just started updating its devices, for example.

The wording is awkward. Gives the impression of something similar to Bluetooth file transfer. I suppose it could be some kind of selective playback over Bluetooth (as opposed to routing *all* audio over Bluetooth), but since google is really into reinventing the wheel and making things only compatible with their own crap, its probably just (chrome)cast.

It is never going to happen that any company is going to drop everything they're doing and only work on one thing.

I completely understand, and I don't expect that. I was being heavily sarcastic given the many issues users have experienced with the last software update that had to be pulled because of a radio issue. Google just has weird priorities at times.

It's been fine for me but I wouldn't say perfect. I've had some random reboots / glitches appear, and battery drain issues I can't explain.
Le Googs be like, 12 is a hot mess! Time to focus on 13 instead!

The radio issues are probably the responsibility of Samdung to deal with. I doubt that ANYONE at google is working on that at any depth greater than testing the updates received from samduck.
But even if google was doing actual work on the radio, do you really think that the same people have the knowledge and skills to work on radio firmware as those who work on UI or those who work on things like this feature? So you would do what? Lay off the UI and new features workers while waiting for the radio firmware people to fix their glitches?
Yup this is confusing because Google needs to fix stable 12 first but then they still developing 12L and now 13 lol I know they have different teams but I wonder if they will just merged 12L to 13 or just leave 12L for fold / flip devices.

How can I prevent app gets killed instantly in background?

When I switch to a banking app (e.g. Revolut) to authorize a purchase by a debit or credit card, the merchant website with the authorizing process gets killed in the background. When I switch back after authorizing the payment in my banking app the merchant website is dead and the payment failed. This happens with websites (Chrome) as well as payments within apps. My workout is to open both apps in splitscreen mode but some apps like Revolut do not support splitscreen or behaves buggy (Klarna).
I am using stock android 10. Any suggestions?

Thanks but this seems to be all MIUI related
Ah. Android One? This is the similar guide for Android One. You could also try the generic instructions.

Just curious, would you mind telling me about your experience with Havoc? How are you finding it? ...I've been tempted to try flashing a custom rom (for the first time) cuz of the bad ram management of stock rom, but i'm not sure about which one to choose.

Havoc is much better than stock at keeping apps active even if you switch to a different one. Also if you flash the Gapps version, it's the only custom rom (I found) that works with Android Auto.
I get good battery life for an almost 4 year old phone, and even if I keep it running for over 20 days without rebooting, the speed remains the same. Which was not the case on stock (I needed to reboot at least once a week or it would slow down)
Of course, your mileage may vary depending on the number and type of apps you have installed.

First of all thanks a ton for answering so fast, fr. You pretty much convinced me to give it a shot. I was wondering, can you give me any directions in order to go install it? I never flashed before, so if you got any tips i'd highly appreciate. Also do you have any bugs to report, cause I've looked around and i always see people complaining about issues with banking apps/camera/fingerprint scanner/audio and so on...is it your case too?
On a sidenote, what about kernels? Do you use a custom one along with the rom? And the updates, do you have to reflash it everytime a new version is available or is it built-in?
Sorry for the wall of questions, and thank you for your time already.

I flashed the kernel included with the rom. Updates are OTA, so no need to reflash, it will silently install and update.
Flashing instructions can be found here https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/stable-havoc-os-rom-r-android-11-0-official-mi-a2-lite.4282247/
Support is available on Telegram by the community and the maintainer (this link may or may not work: https://t.me/c/1244092342/35304 )
As far as bugs are concerned, I had one major issue 2 or 3 releases ago: Android Auto stopped working due the the fact that the Gapps package was changed a bit. I reached out to the maintainer and he sent me a custom installation ZIP the next day. It worked again and following releases had Android Auto back in them.

Question Firefox problems on Android 13 ROM

I'm using Pixel Extended ROM and every now and then I get notifications from Firefox says that a problem has occurred, and I then can't type in any fields on websites for logins etc. I have to force close the app and reopen it.
Does anyone else have this problem? I've reinstalled the app. Is it just my ROM, or an android 13 problem, or what? It's really starting to annoy me now
Bump. Forgot to mention that media in Firefox also won't play when this happens
I have the same problem. It's not a PEX problem because the same issues appears on CrDroid and Nameless too. It something with Firefox itself because on OOS Firefox works just fine.
So far I found no fix to that, I switched to another browser.
Yeah seeing the same issue here, currently on crDroid (latest build) myself
I've been doing my own builds of LOS20 and it affects me as well on 9 pro. It is not an issue on my 8T builds. I have tried with both 12 and 13 blobs and firmware. Most of the custom 13 roms are using 12 blobs still.
To gather some more information are all of you using models converted from TMO? Or did you start with EU/IN/GLO?

I have the europe version LE2123.
I used to use Firefox as well and having the same problems. I switched to Firefox beta and it's stable apart from its name. Try this one.

It'll continue to happen at random. I am also running Firefox beta for some time now.
EU LE2123 in my case. Glad to know it's not just me. I'm wondering if it's something to do with Firefox being used as the browser in other apps as well? I can't remember what that's called, like when an app shows a web page itself and it uses an existing browser without opening the full fat app. The only reason I suspect this is because sometimes swiping Firefox away from recents isn't enough to fix the problem, and I realise that Twitter for example also has a Firefox instance open. Closing the second app then resolved the problem
Has anyone come any closer to figuring this out? Or at least what triggers it?

I remember an issue like this long ago that was resolved by going to about:config and turning off hardware acceleration. About:config was removed from regular play store versions of firefox but I believe you can still get to it with Firefox Beta and nightlies.
If you suspect it has something to do with webviews, you may be able to disable something for webviews in about:config
There's also possibilities something within developer options of your phone could help fix this until it's resolved officially
try brave browser...

I think all of this could be related to Keystore. If your having these problems filling out passwords in certain applications like outlook, firefox, instagram etc. the kernel is probably your issue.
There's really only a few things an end user can do to solve the problem. Either reflash firmware or switch to a compatible kernel and hope the problem goes away.
I sure hope this helps!
brave browser is really becoming a viable option on android, been quite happy with it. We quit using ffox on android long time ago, got tired of the trouble and they have become political in the last 2-3 years as well. No longer trusted here.
My daily driver is LE2125 on LOS 19.1 currently, I am having other problems on LOS20 (cert store is unstable, it screws up all mail apps that read our client X509 certs used to authenticate to our mail servers - and we do not install a google apps/play services of any kind on ours so this is just LOS20/Android 13 issue, cant blame the google apps). I have a spare LE2125 I am running LOS20 on, brave is rock solid on that too, probably worth a try. just a suggestion.
It's binder driver screwed up in kernel. There are patches in testing which greatly improve the situation but it seems not fully fixed yet. See the LOS20 thread for more information. It's not a firefox bug, just firefox is one of the apps affected by it.
