General Runner-up award for the most repairable phone of 2022 goes to the Pixel 6 Pro - Google Pixel 6 Pro

Damn, I did not expect that. It seems that Google has come a long way.
Jerry says that the Pixel 6 Pro is the second most repairable smartphone of the year 2022, the only phone being more repairable is the Fairphone, which is literally designed to be repairable.
The biggest argument in favor of the Pixel 6 Pro is the fact that the front panel can be disassembled in less than 2-3 minutes, Jerry even claims 60 seconds should be enough when the repair is done by a professional. That's awesome to hear in case the screen breaks. An easy repair is a big pro.
"Smartphone Durability Awards 2021!"
Skip to 02:19 for the Pixel 6 Pro part.
What also should be noted is the fact that Google opted for a plastic clip system underneath the display (additional to the ever present glue)- meaning you could even swap out the panel and put everything back together, simply by clipping the panel into the phone chassie, WITHOUT glue. Now, that is not recommended, but it's good to know that there is more holding the phone together than a couple drops of glue.

Broken Display without physical contact?

I have had my p2 for about 3 weeks and was quite happy until now.
just out of nowhere i noticed on the bottom right corner of my front display panel that there is a crack.
i investigated around the corners and found that everything else is basically like new, no bump, dent scratch whatsoever, i am also protecting the phone quite much and haven't had any sort of "accident"
there's at least one user in another forum who reports his phone has gotten a cracked display because of sunlight / heat issues, while the weather gets better it hasn't been exposed to any extraordinary direct sunlight, so i am really bothered if this is caused by manfacture / quality issues and i am looking to resolve it with amazon where i got it.
other than that it's fully functional and i am super annoyed to go though the process of getting things worked out / fixed / replaced / returned....
german forum with another guy who has even servere cracked screen due to as he claim temperature differences
https://www.computerbase.de/forum/showthread.php?t=1670399
anyone knows something?
well this is a bit worrying ill try to keep mine out of the direct sun thanks.
I had a nightmare last night that I picked my phone up and the whole screen was completely shattered!
p2 is already on it's way for customer service from amazon, will see what they will do.
I wonder how widespread this problem is. I just ordered a P2 myself & this has me a bit worried. I am dealing with touchscreen issues on my current phone, a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. The upper part of the touchscreen doesn't work at all and the back/home buttons only work if I put the phone in glove mode and press several times. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a new phone and the battery life impressed me on the P2. .
Haven't had any issues with my device since purchasing it a month ago.. Would never put any device in direct sunlight no matter which device. Especially if a device has glass on one or both sides. Saw a bend test and this device is really really tough to damage. Plus this device does not heat up since its 10nm Snapdragon Chipset makes it so. If this phone is defective.. then should the P1 and any phone that has all glass or the 2.5 glass shape form. So any one with that problem should contact the proper place where they purchased the device or the Lenovo manufacturer. Only suggestion is to purchase the 'shockproof case' to prevent any stress on the phones surface.
Had an Xperia Z ways back and the power button stopped working.. but it was due to water damage.. even though it is mostly waterproof.. Xperia phones are tough phones too.. and it has glass on both sides.
Worrying indeed, let us know what support says.
I must say the screen on mine has the occasional sensitiviy issue in the bottom part. Not sure if it's due to the "removable" navigation buttons or to the "hardness" of the glass, but it was definitely not like that on my Moto G4.
Also it seems some earlier P2 models had a bottom part that was "sloping" ?

sunlight yea,... i am also not doing that, but for example when i were to use my other phone ( which was about to be replaced with p2 ) in situations like car gps navigation it's facing heavy usage AND is explosed to direct sunlight ( at least the back-side it is ) which makes my phone (honor 7 right now) pretty hot ... and this is just a very normal use case scenario... since the p2 is already received by amazon i cannot try out to see if there is any heat issues like that...

i haven't gotten any email from amazon however in my p2 order it says the device has been received and it'll take 2-3 days until they charge back money. i assume that will happen and i will report back. but there hasn't been any communication on their side.

Yeah sunlight heat is not a devices friend and it can damage for sure if the requirement is met since heat expands. You should be fine, returns take a bit and the return transaction.
doesn't give a p2 back unfortunatly ... well to be honest i had the option to select replacement. but well. this is the very first device i had an display issue so that's that.
on the other hand i was reaaaallly reallly disappointed to see the ultra battery mode switch not being usuable as it disabled accessable app settings (tasker greenify etc pp) and those 14 days unlock being a pain... and no active development for a device "this new" .... being a phone for 230 € new on that deal it was a real bombshell
never say never that's it for the p2 for now, receiving a xiaomi note 4 very soon and will see how that performs

Understandable, am still on Stock Nougat for now. Good luck with the Xiaomi.
I'm just curious but was the phone charging when the crack became apparent?

Barely 8 days old phone , and screen getting scratched already ,

My device is barely 8 days old , and the screen has some scratches already , minor ones , now I don't understand how can this be, have used the phone with utmost respect, is it due to the oleophobic coating coming off , any one else in the same boat
Scratches happen.. They just do no matter how careful you are. Treating a phone with utmost care and respect won't change that fact. If you've ever watched JerryRigEverything on Youtube you would notice he always comments that 'pocket sand' and the like will always cause scratches. You'd be surprised what's inside of our pockets... I slapped a case and screen protector on to avoid just that. I've had so many phones in my years and I would say 85% of them have some form of faint scratching and only one with severe scratches.. just the way she goes..
Mate scratches do happen , I get that, but I have used phones in the past , Moto x pure , note 2, oneplus 3t, and I didn't use a screen protector with them, and didn't handle them with kids gloves either , still not a scratch on the screen, getting screen scratches withing a short span of 8 days is heartbreaking, I love the device otherwise,
its really not something that time has anything to do with, its just bad luck that something hard scratched it (probably a piece of sand..which isnt just at the beach, but normal soil/dirt can have small pieces here or there. sorry bud. lots of people feel this way about sand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tLf1JO5bvE

You'll have to excuse my bluntness but I'm not blaming Google for this.. It has Gorilla Glass 5 and there's nothing that I know of that would compromise the integrity of the glass that Google could have done. It's unfortunate.. But does happen to the best of us. /out
Happened to me too, its aggravating but im not shocked. Someday in the future ill be RMAing for my crackly speakers so maybe I'll use a screen protector the next go around
Clean your pockets, watch where you're placing it, and don't place it screen down. I had it 3 weeks before putting a case or screen protector on and had no scratches.
Mines is 2 weeks old, no scratches no screen protector ?

I feel you. I'm convinced that not all Gorilla Glass 5 (or 4, or 3 or 2 etc.) are created equal. For instance, my OnePlus 3 was used for about 8 months with no screen protector and never developed a scratch. Meanwhile, my old Pixel XL showed signs of scratching within days of unboxing, under the exact same usage and care. And my wife's Galaxy S7, which she throws around like a brick, has been kicking for over 1.5 years without a screen protector and has no noticeable signs of scratches.
The reality is that you've gotta expect that these screens will scratch, no matter how much you baby them. Because of that I installed a full coverage screen protector on my 2 XL immediately after unboxing the phone.
As others said already, time really has nothing to do with the scratches, other than, of course, the increasing likelihood you will get them the longer you have the phone. And yes it does suck incredibly when you are still in the initial honeymoon phase and the product is damaged already.
I can only think of maybe once or twice I've ever scratched a display, and even then it was only when I went to sell that the store buying it pointed out the problem.
My solution: do not put the phone in a pocket. Ever. I will carry my phone 24-7 regardless of how unnatural it is, supply because putting it in a pocket results in incredibly risky exposure to particles other than just dust. In almost every case of scratching related to pockets, the individual claims there is nothing in the pocket, only the phone is kept in there, etc. The frank reality is that having ACTUAL objects like keys or even a box cutter is probably less likely to scratch the screen than a microscopic piece of sand.
Also when wiping off the screen, it might even be better to rinse the phone first just to get off the particles and ensure you're not digging them into the screen in the cleaning process.
Likewise, those flip cover cases are another thing to avoid. They will ensure that anything trapped gets sufficiently smushed and slid around the screen.

Question Waterresistant?

Hi,
Got my F3 almost a week ago, but comming from a Sony XZ1c I'm used to a waterresistant phone. I know this isn't in the specs, but some things just keep me wondering....
see 2m30s: Jerry takes out the simtray of the F1 and there's no rubber sealing. The F3 clearly has one:
see 0m12s or look at your own if you're as lucky as I am Also the outside of the USB port seems to have some rubber around it (see 1m16s) but I can't see the inside.
Also GSMarena was curious (https://www.gsmarena.com/poco_f3-review-2248p2.php)
"We can say two things for sure - the Poco F3 has fewer ports than the X3 Pro - hence fewer potential water entries - and it seems the F3 has similar SIM and USB port insulations as the ones on the Poco X3 Pro. Long story short - we do believe the F3 is protected against splashes, but for some reason, the maker isn't advertising it as such."
In the Poco teardown video I can't get a clear look at the speaker ports and even using a magnifier I'm unable to see if there any kind os sealing on the inner end of the holes in de phone.
What is your opinion? Who's maybe more adventurous or experienced to see if the holes have been waterproofed?
Have a great weekend!

Personally I think it's water resistant but they've decided to not get it officially tested to lower costs so they could instead spend on an amoled and snap 870 5g. So my opinion is it is water resistant however we'll never know for sure

I agree, I have the same feeling as well.
Looking at the rubber sealing they for sure thought about water ingress protection, but did not go for official certification to safe cost.

Reminds me of the OnePlus One if i remember correctly they did the same.
It seems it will be like POCO F1 - unofficialy annouced to be splash resistant after some time of release. Personally I have no knowlage about it. I used poco f1 in the light rain or spilled some drops on it and I had never face an issue.
Thank you all!
I'never actually made made my old phone really wet, but knowing it can handle it gives a peace of mind
Too bad I don't know how they made the lower speaker holes....
I'd say most phones these days are splash resistant with a tempered glass screen protector and TPU case.
I bought my Mi Pad 4 in 2018 when there was little to no IP rating phones on the market and I've used it under snowy and rainy conditions during bus stops, it's still working perfectly with 94% battery charge.

Funny it can handle a splash after all after Jerry finds that "they made no effort to make it water resistant at all" or something like that. And a reassuring thought also

True, chances of it ever getting wet without any case at all are very very small. Using it without a case it'll probably slip right out of my hand in a day or 2
Sorry for obsessing guys
Finally managed to make a pic of the bottom speaker holes. They're not completely open after all but there seems to be a small grid of somekind.
Seems the holes in the grid are too small for water.
Now I'll try to leave the topic alone until it actually drops in the water
Ok, probably it really is since the K40 pro has what seems to be the exact same design and is IP53. I really don't beleive that internally there's something different with the ports so guess you're right:"they saved costs for and official rating and can use it now as a ksp for the pro
Well, I can say that I've already accidentally tested this myself. The other night I accidentally knocked over half a glass of water right on top of the screen, and left it for a minute or two before I noticed. I just wiped it off and haven't had a single problem.

ok that is good to know. So aparently the very tiny speaker grill on the top left front of the display (barely visible to the naked eye) has been protected too.
Thanks for testing
Xiaomi doesn't was to pay for certification to keep the prices low for consumers, but I'm pretty sure the phone has splash/dust proof equivalent to IP53 rating.
Someone was kind enough to try
PLZ deleted.. stupid XDA App...
All those dunk tests... don't try it.
Failure is always the last result
Thanks, i won't, unlocking a new phone is tense enough
fyi, I forgot to remove my phone from my pocket when I went in the swimming pool. For around 10min under maybe 50cm of water.
I press on/off button and worked great. But for 2min.
I made noob mistakes (trying to unlock it, pressing buttons, and blowing through holes) and after 2min, it died. Reboot and screen slowly turned off. I think the buttons are the worst part of the phone, I could literally drink the water that went into the phone from them. Crazy.
Anyway, my adventure with the F3 ends here Gonna make a last attempt in few days again (after drying it for 3 days into rice). Going back on my S10e.. which is waterproof ^^

Rice doesn't work! NO!
Pull the rear cover and disconnect the battery asap!!!
Place in a warm dry room with a fan on it. Allow to completely dry, more is better than less. At least 2 days.
For better water removal:
If it doesn't have a LCD display, you can flush with anhydrous (96-99% only!) isopropyl alcohol to absorb the water. Be careful if it can get in between the glass and display, avoid this as it may leave a water mark. Get as much as the isopropyl off then by using centrifugal force and gravity*. Proceed to the drying procedure above.
Isopropyl is flammable so don't get stupid with it.
Never use it or any solvent around a LCD display; it will poison the display.
Use your best judgement. If you are successful the device will function normally.
If not it's likely because you delayed in removing the battery.
If it was salt water... it's already dead.
*Dry, oil free low pressure (5-15 psi) compressed air can be used to more efficiently displace/dry the isopropyl alcohol. Get under the BGA chipsets on the mobo with it. Connectors and switches. Don't go too nuts but blowout as much as possible without driving it in between the display/glass.

Repairing a Razr 5G

My screen started to delaminate from the protective layer in the hinge area. Literally while I was talking to Motorola, I dropped the damn thing and shattered the back glass, which pretty much eliminated the possibility of getting the screen fixed under warranty as I'd already been having to argue with them about whether the screen issue was caused by "physical damage" (I'm not terribly impressed with the warranty support for such an expensive phone, fwiw).
Anyway, since they wanted 900 to repair it, and I only paid 800 on sale, I just ordered a screen and new back glass from Mobile Defenders.
Unfortunately, while taking it apart, I moved a little too fast and managed to crack the front glass pretty good too, and that doesn't seem to be available from Mobile Defenders, but you can get the glass on eBay for about $50.
In looking at the front glass, it isn't obvious how I'd remove the exterior screen from it in order to move it to a new piece of glass - has anyone performed this repair?
My first incident, I broke the rear "glass" battery door housing (yeah, real smart, make a phone out of ceramic like glass) and managed to find an OEM replacement. It was super easy to change, and I had some mobile phone adhesive glue (for repairing LED screens on handsets) because the seller forgot to include the adhesive stickers.
I mailed my phone to Motorola, and they received it Monday May 2nd for two issues... I had two pixels go bad (they stay lit white all the time) and making calls, the person (hence, the TX from my Razr) could not hear me (I sounded like the first gen digital phones with bad reception, robotic aqua underwater warble) rendering the phone useless to use.
Motorola states 5 to 7 day turnaround. They received my phone and have not even started to work on it.
Motorola screwed me...
I love how technical services can void themselves of all obligations and use the "liquid damage" card.
I live in the North, it's cold. Everybody should be made aware that if you live in a cold environment and you go from a warm environment (using your phone indoors, or charging your phone while driving) and going outside, you are exposing your handset to cold. If condensation is liquid damage, then I do not know of any electronic device that you can use in the winter that would be exempt from possible condensation.
I had this discussion with Apple in the past, and they overturned there decision on a laptop and repaired it under warranty being aware that this is a possibility and that it may trigger the water stickers that phone manufactures place inside handsets.
I understood when I purchased my device that the Razr 5g is on the forefront of design and technology. I get it that the rear housing that is made of ceramic can crack if dropped. I know that the foldable screen is subject to many problems, like delamination, pixels going bad etc.. But considering all this, the service offered by Motorola and there lack of customer service (I have called many times, getting line disconnections (their phone system sucks), speaking with third party call center representatives who are clueless, being "not listened too" and replied with generic off topic replies... I don't see how they can offer flagship devices and expect the Diehards (when Motorola was an American Cell Phone Company and Communications Powerhouse) to buy in to the next generation flip.
Incredibly disappointed. I'm going with my plan B. Screw U Moto!
I did manage to figure out the disassembly process, but the replacement interior screen I received ended up being defective - the image worked, but it did not detect touch. I reinstalled the old messed up screen, and although it was half whited out from the damage by this point, it could detect touch, so I know the issue was the replacement screen.
Mobile Defenders were kind enough to fully refund me on the price of the replacement screen, at which point I noticed that complete, working Razr 5G phones could be had used for $200 - half what I paid for the replacement screen. Between that and Moto's crummy support and warranty policies, the garbage camera on the phone, and the fact that I hadn't had a security patch or software update since getting the phone and was still stuck on Android 11, I just gave up and got a Pixel 6 Pro.
It's huge, and I hate how huge it is, but it works, it gets updated, and it can stand up to daily use.
I will very likely never buy another Moto device - even trying this one was an experiment.

General Samsung Customer Service in US

I have a Fold 4 that had some bad pixels on the inside screen. I called Samsung support and got told to go to a UbreakIfit store.
They took a day and when they handed me the device at 6 pm yesterday, the front screen was separating from the device. I showed them this and they took it back saying they forgot to heat up the glue that sticks the front screen.
They gave it back to me at almost 7 pm and it looked fine. When I got home the store was closed already and the phone was working really slow. Then I noticed that the front camera looked like it had condensation.
Now my phone is super slow, my front screen camera is not working and the front screen is again coming apart.
I called Samsung again 5 times. 3 times the people that answered didn't even listen to me. Didn't care what I had to say. One time I was directed to Care+ to spend 100$ to get my phone replaced. For a 1800$ phone this is really bad customer service.
Making me pay 100$ so I can still have a phone for the 7-12 business days that it takes to fix this is horrible customer service.
The last call I asked for a manager and got a lady which almost was laughing in my face and my wife's right next to me. I have been a Samsung buyer since the 1st galaxy, however I never had to deal with Samsung support before.
Samsung support is so bad it's like an ad for Apple.
Samsung support sucks elephant balls bad. The Fold displays are born to crack. Mostly the protective inner display cover but when it cracks it needs to be replaced or it will destroy the display. So expect that in 6-12 months. As you witnessed repairs aren't easy.
Last great flagship Sammy made in my opinion was the N10+. It's been downhill since then.
This N10+ will be 4yo in October, the only repair has been a replacement battery. It looks, feels and runs like new with well over 8k SOT hours on it... the display remains perfect. It's the only Samsung flagship I would reccomend even today.
I replace the inner protective layer with this, just install is carefully and it'll work better than the OEM.
DOME GLASS Whitestone GEN Film Screen Protector for Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 (2022) Anti-Bubble HD Clear Hard Coated PET Film Screen Guard https://a.co/d/i9r4Fij
I also used the chat feature to have mine initially replaced on my fold 3 a couple years ago. So yeah, they don't want to replacr it, but they will if you prrss and point out itls a known issue thats ALL OVER the internet.
Thr authorized repair is not fully Sammy's fault. Demand a different store, or they need to replace the device.
