Tasker developer teases new Android 13 features, including custom Quick Settings tilesAndroid 13 Developer Preview 1 came out a few days ago, but apps are already being updated to introduce some of the brand new features that were introduced. One such app is Tasker, an automation app aimed at power users. The developer has released a video showing off how Tasker now incorporates Material You icon theming, the photo picker API for choosing photos on-device in a more secure way, and the tiles API for adding custom tiles to the quick settings.
This build isn’t available on the Google Play Store yet as it’s not possible to submit Android 13-based apps just yet. Still, the developer shows how the app will work. Tasker’s dynamic icon will match other icons on the system that also support Material You theming, where the icon will change color and integrate with the rest of the system.

Also introduced was a “Pick Photos” action, which leverages the new Photo Picker API. Currently, if you want to access photos through an app directly, your entire photo library needs to be shared with that app. From there, the app lists all your photos, and you select one and choose it to send. However, with the Photo Picker API, photos are listed by the Android system, and only the photo you choose is shared with the app. This reduces the overall access that Tasker has to your photo library.
Finally, the third feature introduced was support for the quick settings placement API. Android 13’s new tile placement API allows an app to prompt the user with a button to add a custom quick tile to the quick settings. A user can now create and add a custom tile from within Tasker that can trigger an action that the user has defined.
If you want to check out Tasker, you can take a look at it on the Google Play Store below. These are exclusive features for Android 13 only and will require the user to be running the Android 13 Developer Preview.

[APP] KitKat Launcher+

I'd like to start by saying this isn't my app. I'm just sharing its existence with users here, since I know many of us want to use GEL badly, but it lacks some core features we all have grown to require before considering using a launcher as our daily driver.

Description
This is the new KitKat Launcher compiled straight from AOSP. KitKat Launcher+ focuses on clean and stable features that keep true to the stock KitKat experience. Great customization without having to deal with all the bloat commonly found in other launchers. Guaranteed to be fast and smooth.
Please Note: KitKat Launcher+ is available for devices with Android 4.1.2. and later. However, since AOSP is directed to Android 4.4 you will have the best experience on Android 4.4 and on Google devices (Nexus 4/5). Officially AOSP Launcher3 does not support landscape mode or tablets. Your milage will vary.
Feel free to e-mail me about bugs and crashes but only when you were able to reproduce the bug and/or have an error message. If the launcher crashes from the start it might not be compatible with your device!

Gonna try this one, I just update to 4.4.2 and my GEL is gone, but there are some things I didn't like about it anyways example, the icon size looks awful in nexus 4, tends to be slow sometimes, hope this offer the best of both words, gel transparency and faster access to Google now and better looking icons for my nexus 4 + some Google to turn off some features.
Reporting back after testing.
I can't add forum shortcuts (tapatalk pro)? Others with same problem? Thought it maybe was because I hadn't purchased the pro version, but no luck!

Why does it need to have permission to make phone calls?

[APP][Free][Beta][4.1+ Phones] THING - a new behavior driven, API powered Launcher

Me and my team are developing a brand new kind of Android Launcher called THING that we think you'll find is really cool. Check out thing.se and sign up for our private beta! In short, THING is a behavior driven, API powered Android Launcher that simplifies and automates your life. As I'm a new member, I can't post proper links just yet - sorry. Again, thing.se is where you want to go.
THING listens to your behavior and presents you with apps you're most likely to use at any given time of day and activity. THING lets you create your universe - if you can write a text, you can create an Agent that listens and acts on your behalf. Any API can be implemented to enhance your power and reach – the building blocks of Your Universe. Thing puts you in control - of everything.
Thing analyzes your app usage history and activity to determine what apps you're most likely to want, whenever you want them. The idea is to make app discovery easy instead of relying on a wall of apps and muscle memory to know where a given app is. (Pro tip: long press on the secondary hotseat to force an update).
Thing uses NLP to interpret what you want to do and how to do it by letting you program your surroundings - to create your universe. For example, if you're in Boston, an agent might be:
Code:
When I land at Logan Airport on Wednesday, get me an Uber and text John "I've arrived safely" if it's raining in Madrid.
We interpret and map keywords to services and actions to create a logical flow of events that calls API endpoints.
Feel free to ping me or email me if you want to sign up for the beta or if you have any feedback - good or bad!

General This app lets you take back control over how Android 12 opens links

https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-fix-android-12-link-handling/
I don't really have a problem with Android 12's default behavior in this respect, but it's good to have options.
Among all the fantastic features and changes that Android 12 brings along, it also introduces some rather controversial changes. We have already talked about how Android 12’s new background app limitations can run havoc on apps like Termux. Another annoying change in Android 12 is the way it handles external links. If you’ve recently upgraded to Android 12, you probably would have noticed that when opening links, you no longer get that familiar “Open with” dialogue. Links will either automatically open in their corresponding apps or take you straight to Google Chrome or your default browser. If you’re not a fan of this change and want to restore the way things were in older Android versions, read on.
Starting with Android 12, Google now only allows “verified links” to be opened in external apps. Verified links allow app developers to ensure that only their app can handle links from their domain. If a link is non-verified, Android 12 will open it in the default browser, instead of showing you the app selection dialogue. But thankfully there’s an app called Better Open With that lets you get around Android 12’s new link handling behavior.
How to fix the handling of links on Android 12 with “Better Open With”
Download the “Beter Open With” app from the Play Store.
Now on your Android 12 phone navigate to Settings > Default apps > Browser app.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Set Better Open With as your default browser.
Now go to Settings > Default apps > Opening links and turn off the “Open supported link” toggle for every app that supports verified links.
That’s it. Now whenever you open a link, you’ll see the familiar Complete Action With dialogue listing out all the apps that can handle that link — just like in previous Android versions.
Even if you’re not running Android 12, “Better Open With” is still a great replacement for the system app chooser as it gives you more customizations and control.

Nice app. I've been using it for a couple of years and didn't see any difference when moved to A12 as the app is my "a must". That's why I was so surprised when I read the the news about A12 unusual link handling.
Happy to know I'm on the right side.
Thank you. very helpful for me 🤝🏼
AutoShare is excellent at customizing which app opens with fine grained Tasker control

With the launch of the Pixel 6 and Android 12, At a Glance saw a big redesign. In November, we detailed how the visual revamp was a prelude to Google adding even more capabilities. That At a Glance upgrade, with interesting changes to the backend, is now beginning to roll out.
As of today, long-pressing the very top of the Pixel Launcher and tapping Customize reveals new At a Glance settings that are powered by Android System Intelligence, previously known as Device Personalization Services. We’re seeing this with the latest Google app beta (version 13.2), while ASI has not seen an update since last year. This page starts with a new description:
Your Assistant shows you what you need, right when you need it, on your home screen and lock screen.
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
There’s a shortcut to quickly enable/disable “Sensitive notifications” on the lockscreen, while we next get a list of features that are available today:
Timer & stopwatch: Timer and stopwatch info from the Clock app
Bedtime: Your upcoming bedtime from the Clock app
Fitness: Activity info from your fitness app
The first Google Clock integration appeared during the Android 12 Beta, while the fitness tie-in was shown off with the Pixel 6 and Adidas Run app.
As we previously found, Google should be adding several more capabilities to At a Glance:
At a store: Shopping lists and Google Pay rewards cards when you’re in supported stores
Connected devices: Connection status and battery info for your Bluetooth devices
Doorbell: Show who’s at the door when your doorbell rings
Flashlight: Reminder when flashlight is on
Safety check: Safety check countdown from the Personal Safety app
This latest iteration of At a Glance is notable for integrating across key Google and Pixel experiences, like GPay, Personal Safety, and Google Nest.
Meanwhile, you’re still able to access the old At a Glance settings to turn on/off weather, upcoming calendar events/reminders, and more from the bottom of the new preferences page.

I would be interested if anyone on Nova gets these. Checked in the Google Assistant settings in the Google app and so far I haven't.

General XDA Article: Android 13 will make switching between user profiles a whole lot easier

https://www.xda-developers.com/android-13-switch-user-profiles/
February 11, 2022 9:30am Pranob Mehrotra
Android 13 will make switching between user profiles a whole lot easierA few weeks ago, we learned that Google was planning to introduce a new keyguard profile switcher in Android 13. At the time, we saw screenshots showcasing what the feature could look like upon release. And now that Google has released the first Android 13 Developer Preview builds to its Pixel devices, we have some additional info.
As seen previously, the keyguard profile switcher will appear as a drop-down menu on the lock screen PIN/password/pattern entry page. Tapping on the drop-down menu will open up a list of user profiles on the device, allowing you to switch profiles even before unlocking the device. According to Esper, the keyguard profile switcher is disabled by default but is controlled by the SystemUI boolean ‘config_enableBouncerUserSwitcher’. Here’s what it looks like once enabled:
Screenshots: Esper
At the moment, we’re not sure if this new keyguard profile switcher will be available on Android 13 for both phones and tablets. It makes little sense for Google to release it for phones because they’re typically single-user devices. But it will prove to be a handy addition on tablets, as they’re often shared by multiple users.
Speaking of guest profiles, Android 13 is also making it easier for users to install apps while setting up a guest profile. Users will now see a new option called “Install available apps” when setting up a guest profile. Tapping on it will open a list of available apps, allowing users to easily install them in the guest profile. Thankfully, data will not be shared between the owner and guest profiles, which means that guest profile users will need to sign in to the installed apps following the setup.
Screenshots: Esper
Along with the keyguard profile switcher and the new guest profile setup option, Android 13 also enables lock screen rotation on large screen devices. As Esper notes, “Android’s framework configuration controlling lock screen rotation has been set to “false” by default for years, but it is now enabled by default.” However, the lock screen will only rotate on large screen devices. Here’s what it looks like:

These aren’t the only new features and changes included in Android 13 DP1. In case you missed our previous coverage, Android 13 DP1 also introduces a Gboard-like clipboard auto clear feature, two new home screen layouts for the Pixel launcher, a Camera Obfuscator app, a redesigned media player UI, and more. You can learn more about these features by following the respective links.
