Question Disable Samsung-skinned Google Messages - How? - Samsung Galaxy S22

Samsung has added their own skin to Google Messages. The layout, colors, and functionality are all different than the standard Google Messages - even though the phone sees "Google Messages" as being installed from the Play Store. I much prefer the standard Google Messages app over the Samsung-skinned app.
It's even missing features. Like on Google Messages, an iPhone user can react to a text and it'll show the corresponding emoji. On the Samsung-skinned Messages, it sends the standard text saying they reacted. It also doesn't include the option to send higher resolution photos with Google Photos.
If you uninstall Google Messages app, then re-download from the Play Store, you are given back the Samsung themed version.
Anyone have a tip on how to break this? Cheers!

Don't think you easily can however you can morph the appearance by changing the theme or using Goodlock Theme Park.
Load the Goodlock family of apps regardless, far more customization than any other stock Android.
Themes controll the appearance of the keyboard, phone/text message and other screen layouts/colors. Personally I like the basic high contrast themes the most.
Pick theme>pick icon pack>set whatever wallpaper you wish*.
*can be rather time consuming as there are hundreds of free themes, icon packs and more on the Galaxy Store. You'll likely find more than one you like. Make note of the ones you use for future reloads.

Thank you for the theme suggestion. I think the better alternative though would be the removal/disabling of the app since adjusting the theme is not going to solve any of the original issues.
It is odd that Samsung has been able to somehow override an app from the Play Store using some sort of signature or flag on our devices.
That is what I would like help on rectifying. Getting the default plain old Google Messages setup on our devices.

You're welcome. That is odd as the Samsung theme doesn't interact with my 3rd party apps like that, only the Samsung apps for the most part, the keyboard being an exception.
It may be the Galaxy theme you're using is not fully compatible with that OS version or was written to morph that app intentionally... or just a mistake.
Try some other themes.
Try clearing the system cache.

This is a known issue by others with the S22. I copied this content from the Samsung forums and posted here to reach a wider audience. It's not a theme or visual issue, but rather a functionality issue ..
Samsung has seemingly and somehow made the install of Google Messages look a bit more like Samsung Messages, and some features of Google Messages are removed, even though you are indeed using Google Messages, albeit a Samsung tweaked version.

I was able to do it by downloading the messages apk and installing it. It overwrote the Samsung version and now it's back to normal.

An easier way to do it, at least for me, was uninstalling updates in the App settings for Messages. This seemed to have reverted it back to default Google Messages, albeit an outdated version if that matters to you.

Hi! Which version did you use? I tried a few from apkmirror and it said invalid for both. Did you roll the existing one back before you installed the "update"? Thank you!

This one worked for me. I just chose the first variant (the universal phone open beta.) It downloads Google's version of Messages, but in the play store it still shows the option to 'update' messages, and if you update it then it will revert back to the 'samsung dynamic' messages. I really wish there was a way to remove the samsung version of messages permenantly.

Thanks! I can confirm that this worked for me too.
Steps I took.... Force Stop existing install of Google Messages, Clear Data, Clear Cache.. Then I went to Google Play Store and on Google Messages I used the 3 dots at the top right and un-check the Auto Update option.
From there I download the APK you listed and installed and immediately I have the "original" Google Messages back on my device!
Not sure if this is the Beta or not because I can't tell if the iPhone instant reply option is working until I get one from an iPhone user in my Contacts (ha) but it is indeed Google Messages without the Samsung skin.
Cheers!

i dont think thats possible, since its baked into the software... also having two messages app is a pain...

You can always use adb to delete it, get an APK from APK Mirror, and then use APK Updater to update the app whenever a new APK is available.

Downloaded and installed the APK from apkmirror and it did revert the look back to regular messages but the "show iphone reactions as emojis" option is still missing. Had the option on my s20 ultra and now sadly missing from my s22 ultra and now I get to hear all about the dreaded "green bubble" from my colleagues again. Thanks Sam

The option should be there for iphone emojis. Make sure you join the beta for Google messages on the play store as well as download the universal open beta from apk.

Have done both of those things. The option is not showing there for me regardless of what I have running on my phone. I figure it is likely a server side switch like most things google related and it will come to my phone when it does. At this point it is what it is.

I can confirm as well. Was previously using the Beta version of the app on my S21, and with working iPhone emoji replies to messages. Now on the S22 I've done all the steps, and have the "original" Google Messages installed - same Beta version as is setup on my S21 - but I do NOT have the option to enable iPhone emoji replies (to receive them)

Is anyone's Google Messages extraordinarily slow?

I haven't played with this. I loathe Google products in general and limit my investment in them because I know Google will always screw them up, eventually. It's their nature.
Samsung generally has exceptional customization and options. Samsung is also notorious for its hidden in plain sight menus as well in locations that seem counterintuitive at times. I make a point of exploring the settings menu extensively when bored. Even after 2+ I'm still finding surprises on this Android 9 loaded N10+.
Play with it...

I downloaded the messages beta from apk mirror. Now I have the normal messages. But I also use Google Contacts, and when I start a text it defaults to Google Contacts. But when I receive a text it comes in under Samsung Contacts. I wish I could remove Samsung contacts and just use Google Contacts. When I go to set as default, it's greyed out for both Samsung and Google. I want to try and use Android Debloater to remove Samsung Contacts and Samsung themed Messages.

Notion Ink Adam apps (+ screenshots)

As you may have seen, one of the GTab devs ported various Adam apps to run on the GTab. (Thanks to cnewsgrp for the heads up).
Have tried installing them on my 101, and thought I'd offer some feedback and screens for people wondering whether to install them.
To clarify: calendar, mail, calculator and sniffer I installed by placing the apk in system/app folder on UrukDroid 0.5 rooted system (renamed the Mail'd apk to "email.apk") Don't forget to back up original versions. The others I just installed as regular apk (again on UrukDroid 0.5). Have attached a zip of all the files at the bottom of the post. Had to split into 2 packages due to upload size restrictions, system apk contains calendar, email, calculator and sniffer. Misc contains the rest.
Updated modified version of keyboard available in post 29.
1. Calculator - works as expected. The screen alignment is slightly off, so to enter "1", you have to press between "1" and "2". Also, link to normal calculator just goes back to homescreen.

2. Calendar - again, works much as expected. Only thing I've found is that trying to add a new entry causes a force close.
3. Canvas - not much to say. Random force closes, can save new images, can't save edited images
4. Keyboard - fits the 101 screen really well, and I love the Fn key, rather than long press, for symbols. Not so keen on the colour, no obvious way to change skins.
5. Quick office
6. Sniffer - seems to work well, doesn't pick up microSD as storage on main screen, but you can navigate to it. No force closes yet.
7. Mail'd - same set up as K9 (which its based on). Looks nice on the 101's screen - initial screen shows accounts>folders>mail. Opening an email slides the whole screen across to the left, showing mail list>message. Takes a bit of time to load messages each time the app is opened. IMAP and Hotmail work fine. No force closes yet. New mail works, but address box not linked to contacts, so you have to type whole address.

Did you install the mail client on a stock firmware or one installed with the SDE?
I hope it's a stock firmware. Because i'v been looking for something like this.

Hmm well the strange thing is I downloaded the zip file extracted the apk pushed it to my A101IT sd card and installed it via the file manager.
IT WORKS. So no need for root or SDE.
Still some display bugs though but I imagine those will get fixed.
How is the Quick Office functionality? I'd give it a shot myself but I'm at work and the Archos is at home (finally had to quit bringing it in so I could get stuff done . . . yet here I am in the forums)

Have only tried it a bit. Very smooth interface, makes good use of the 101's screen size. Editing existing files and creating new files works well, no force closes so far. Haven't investigated the full feature set, but much the same as QuickOffice via the Market I guess. Haven't used the original QuickOffice, so can't compare them I'm afraid. The only obvious omission from the Adam version seems to be the lack of the "ConnectMobile" aspect ie no way to use the Adam version to access GDocs etc
EDIT No my mistake, it does indeed support online services - GDocs, Dropbox, box, mobileme.
Info box gives version as "Quickoffice 1.0.1 - Tablet"
also the webbrowser is nice

Yes I have both the stock email client and the Mail'd client
for Sniffer how do you get the bottom menu to show up. on my Archos 70 I can't see the Applications or that bottom menu bar. I am assuming because the app is sized for a 10" screen.

I have installed both Mail'd and Quick Office, they are working! I have not had any but will report any issues I do run into.

Have to say, I found Mail'd quite slow and clunky to use. Have also tried the Samsung Mail app, and though they both look nicer, I end up back with K9 for functionality. QuickOffice on the other hand is absolutely brilliant!

that is what I figured, it looks nice, but without the full screen it is not that useful for me.
it seems, it's working. Only the calendar really doesn't want to add new events.
Thank you very much for this thread.
I have replaced stock apps Email (Mail'd), Browser, Calculator, Calendar and installed Quick Office, Sniffer they are working
Mail'd, I love this app.
Browser is very nice, download web page quickly.
Calculator better than stock app.
Calendar is very beautiful but could not add event. (FC)
Quick Office, I though better than Documents To Go
Sniffer, Not interesting for me, uninstalled.

It's just the defaut browser with a custom ui.
I like Mail'd, but canvas crashes constantly...sniffer is useless on the 101...and I dont need the others. Keeping maild though...luv that sheit!
Mail'd works on A70IT but I can't go pass the first screen... I can't see/touch the "next" button as seen on screenshot...
maybe cause A70 is limited to 800 x480 resolution
also.. browser.apk i got from Gtab thread can't be install... someone please point me to the right browser file please..

[Q] Dialer not searching ??

Just got myself a GN and I was a bit disappointed with the dialer.
With my old phone I could just spelling the name of a contact and the dialer would list contacts.
GN just puts in the numbers no direct search ??
Is it some option or something I am missing or do I need another dialer??
Love the feel of it just wish I did not have to go to contacts to find a number...
The stock dialer does not support T9 Smart dial. Either use another dialer, or use the google search bar to search for the contact you want to call.
Or spend a minute amount effort and tap the search icon in the bottom left of the dialer then start typing the name. It's not really much time wasted...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I also wish the T9 dialer was built into stock Android as it is with HTC Sense, Touchwiz and MIUI.
If you would like Google to change this, star the following threads in the Android issue tracker:
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...t9&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
While it may not be much more effort, it is quite clear that this feature is available in other stock dialers, then why not in google's own?
I also store my contacts on the sim card and if anyone has noticed, then you cannot import all contacts into phone at once. You have to manually go through all contacts which again is a sore point.
I think that is a valid point to expect in the dialer, not whether searching seperately is an option or not!

Why not synchronise your contacts with google, so if you:
1. lose your phone.
2. Phone gets broken
3. Somebody steals it
it only takes 2 minutes before you have all your contacts again.
There are a lot of Contacts apps around on the market, and i bet even 1 of them supports transferring your sim contacts to the phone.
Earlier i used GO Contacts, but they don't support ICS yet. So for now im using DW Contacts (looks ok, only used it for an hour though).

Yes and accepted, but that behaviour has been standard all along. Rather than make me select one contact at a time from my hundred contacts, that one simple click would have been better. Anyways I prefer not to upload contacts into the cloud because
1. I may not have the consent of some of the ppl that I hold details for, e.g. bosses and they may not prefer it and
2. I personally do not know who or how this data is used/accessed in which case I would rather not. And personally judging by Google's appetite for gathering our personal data, I would rather opt out. Its just me....
Sorry OP to have hijacked your thread..
Correction - User error Apologies, I have just read the manual and it does allow for an 'import all' option to copy all contacts from SIM to phone.
To bad wish they would put that in its a very nice feature I seen no reason to be left out.
Anyone know a good dialer to use instead ?? Would love one with the same look if possible ???
Perhaps it is some sort of lawsuit infringement that prohibits them to build it into the dialer. I don't think Apple has this either, right? Maybe Microsoft has the patent on it.
3rd party dialers have this feature. In fact, I just install the MIUI dialer because it is just awesome. It is in the market and not listed under "MIUI Dialer" but "e9" or something. It works great.

I know from gingerbread that 3rd party apps can't clear unanswered calls. Some if the apps solves that by using the stock dialer list when selecting the notification.
Anyway its limitations in the OS and not the apps.

Also, the Search (Now), Maps, & Music updates are avaiable.

Anyone know if SMS is part of it? Seems silly for it not to be, but doesn't look like it's part of it. So not actually unified messaging yet.

Just installed it, and people's numbers are listed. What happens if I send a message to one? Bearing in mind that Google Voice doesn't yet exist in the UK!
Really does seem like an huge gap. They talked about getting technology out of the way so you can get on with communication, but I still have two apps to send messages and pictures to other people!

It verified my # first?. But didnt migrate my sms list and the hangout message I sent didnt show in sms. I agree it would be cool if that was a feature, maybe in the future.
Didnt want to make a new thread for this but since we are talking about apps and stuff announced at Google I/O. New updates for Google Play music and Google search are in the play store. Google Play Music looks COMPLETELY different.
It tried to verify my number, but I think that's a WhatsApp style link for others to find you.
However, my SIM reports my number as something else entirely because I ported a number over. So it couldn't verify me. Trying to talk to my network now, they're not answering...

I like the improvements too! I figured as much of a hot topic as Hangouts has been I might as well post the thread just in case someone forgot what today is lol. Like I said in the OP, I'm expecting it to die quickly - just a friendly PSA. But you are correct, probably didn't warrant a new thread but I've seen worse.

Yeah, but the number my SIM reports is not my phone number, and Hangouts picked up the number from the SIM! Trying to get the network to reset it...

This is transitioning Talk into Hangouts so it may take a little time for everything to line up. At first I was being directed to "Hangouts (replaces Talk)" that just said "open" on my device, and it looked like Talk. But then, after a dozen impatient refreshes, "open" changed to "update". Now Talk is labeled Hangout and has the new UI, but the icon is still Talk. Messages I am sending in Hangout on my phone are appearing in Talk in gmail on my comp right now.

In my phone I have the Hangout installed now, even started a group conversation, but still getting the old Talk interface in chrome, hence not seeing group messages, and not getting either the new emoticons, nor the new interface, nor the smileys, even when I click the new Hangout button in the toolbar. Maybe it will be implemented after some time in the future

If you are using a ROM where Talk is one of the system apps, you may need to uninstall it. I used Titanium Backup to uninstall it and then downloaded Hangouts from the Play Store.

If I'm understanding you right, you're trying to access Hangouts via the Gmail web interface. The Chrome Hangouts plugin does NOT replace the Talk box in Gmail. It adds an extra app, which is accessed by clicking the Hangouts icon on your Chrome toolbar.
The Gmail web interface will be rolled out later and will be upgraded from within Gmail itself.
Sideload mirrors as attached. (hangouts apk was too large for xda. reuploading...)

REQUEST: Restoring Google Talk in 4.3

Hi there!
Yesterday I received OTA update to 4.3 and discovered that Google Talk app was replaced by Hangouts. The latter is terribly bad app and I'd like to remove Hangouts and install Gtalk. Does anyone know how to restore Google Talk?
I'm tired of people saying that its "terribly bad"—you get text copying, images, emoji, simple group chats and read receipts with live notifications as to when people are writing. Its fantastic as to functionality—the only thing you lost is the ability to set a status. And perhaps one or two smaller features.
However, I don't want to sound just annoying, so is there any way in the built-in settings app to use uninstall updates after a system update such as this one? Considering you had Talk before, I'm assuming (and hoping) that it didn't overwrite the section that stores previously installed versions of that app.

Unfortunately I'm assuming that Google overwrite Talk with Hangouts. When you trying to uninstall hangouts you always go to ver. 1.0.2, not to GTalk.
You can't uninstall because the default is Hangouts. You can get a Talk.apk from older Google image and push it to system/app & remove Hangouts apk.

I'm using stock rom/kernel.
Tell me if I'm wrong but when I try to remove Hangouts and replace it with Gtalk in system/app I will loose ability to receive OTA?

Yeah, probably, since the assert script would check for Hangouts.apk to be patched. But if you know how to copy stuff to system , you also know how to revert the change

So without messing in system/app there is no way to restore Gtalk in 'normal' way?
No, because it doesn't exist in 4.3 system partition so you can't revert to it like before and it can't be installed as a regular app. Sooner you get used to Hangouts, the better

Sorry, that's what I meant by setting a status (online/offline).

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree here. The sooner you get used to Hangouts, the better! Apparently they're adding screen-share soon, which was shown off at the Google event announcing ChromeCast and the New Nexus 7 (which seems awesome, by the way).

You are right, it's not terribly bad, it's "a piece of garbage".
It shows contacts from my SIM card. I keep said contacts hidden in the contacts App, yet Hangouts does't care (I am not going to have an hangout with my voicemail or with my operators's customer service).
It shows circles, but you cannot expand them. Do you remember who is in your circle of acquaintances? I don't.
It shows contacts only by name and you cannot expand them
Some of the contacts appear with the same name multiple times, maybe because they have more that one email address or because they are imported from different apps and there is no way to tell them apart.
Hangout tells you if a contact does not have access to hangouts and offers the possibility of inviting him/her (good). However you cannot hide said contact from the list or only show the ones that have hangouts
It doesn't show when contacts are online
So it is very understandable that people want to revert back to something that was working better at sending and receiving messages.
Yeah, you can do everything but see who's online you can IM with!! /sarcasm

Use Hangouts on computers, Android and Apple devices.
More Hangouts awesomeness:
Hangouts stay in sync across devices so you can start or continue them anywhere.
Choose from hundreds of emoji to help you make your point.
See what you talked about in the past, including shared photos and your video call history.

Hasn't crashed for 3 versions, the problem has always been a lib problem, for those that like to just push/copy file... Flash with right package, video works just perfect.

Market version if installed from Play Store shouldn't be crashing, the one users that have been tryign to push/install manually. has had issues.
In my experiance. I don't like to link to to others, becuase its rude to the OP. But you can flash mine (Inverted) and I have had no issues what so ever.
You are required to have newest Play Services as well...
