General No 4K60 playback on A52s - SD778G - Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G

Not a pleasant surprise, that this mid-2021 near top 700-class snappy is not able to play 4 year old 4K60 videos recorded with cpu-wise much weaker SoCs. Even A51 Exynos 9611 could play 4K120.
Should be considered if buying this phone...

Yes it can handle it. using VLC and not having a single problem.

The hardware can definitely handle it but does the app have the correct codecs to play it? Have you tried playing it in VLC? Can't really help more than that at this point.

It is h.265 HVEC 3840x2160 60 FPS with up to 50mbps. VLC or MX can only play it through SW with stutter.

If VLC doesn't work, try Mx Player with the proper codecs

I have attached a small example. Playing flawless on Poco F1.
Which codec should I choose. Thanks.

I tested your video, on my A52s and works fine, i use the app "xplayer" and the "VLC".

Xplayer works.

Video playback performance for MKV?

Edit: Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366756
Hello, currently I am using the Galaxy S II (1.5ghz Qualcomm S3 version). It almost play 720p MKV videos with RockPlayer, but not quite, since the audio lags behind the video.
Can someone give RockPlayer a try with some hd MKV files on their Nexus and see if it can handle them? Low bitrates will manage, but I'm looking at 720p and 1080p MKV videos at 2000kbps or more.
I am interested in waiting for the American version of the Galaxy Note, but it will also use the Qualcomm S3 chip, which means even though it has a larger screen, it won't play be playing my videos. If the Nexus can manage these videos, I rather get it instead.
There are some legal hd videos such as big buck bunny, which can be converted from MP4 to MKV.
(PS. Yes I want to watch HD videos on my cellphone screen.)
I am the same way. I play 720P .mkv on my phone. i currently have the Rezound(the Nexus is not available in the US yet). When i was using the Thunderbolt, it would play these files, but unless i overclocked the phone it would play out-of-sync(but even then, it would still be slightly out-of-sync).
On the Rezound, 99% of the time the files play just fine(no sync issues). I found that the best player to use is 'Dice Player', followed by MX Video Player.
I did say "99%", and yeah.. for some reason, on rare occasions a video will start to slip out-of-sync, and when it does it's with MX Video Player.. but if do it through Dice Player it plays fine.
I will say though that having 'Sense' on this phone isn't exactly a big plus when it comes to try to getting the best performance out of it. Luckily, the Nexus doesn't have Sense.
I have done a few BluRay rips to 1280x720 (native nexus) and they play on the Galaxy Nexus perfectly using build in player. Much, much better than they ever did on my 10.1 tablet. No issues at all.
The scene I use for test is the bit in Inception where the tables explode in the cafe, this really makes some struggle. No prob on the nexus, very impressed.

MX Player seemed to have more options on when to use hardware decoding than QQ Player has in that video. You could have hardware video decoding while also running software audio decoding.

playing 4k video on exynos octa (SPM-600)?

Any1 here had any success playing 4k vids on the exynos variant? If so pls link the video u played.
My note cant handle 4k mp4's recorded with note 3 w/o significant stutter/very low fps and sound cutting off, tried BSS, Vplayer, MX and Archos (with codecs, and both H/W & S/W decoding if available, closing all background apps, etc).
I'll try converting 4k vids to 1600p, if possible, with Vegas 12 later today..
We have an amazing display with a decent SoC, i'd really like to see what its capable of at maximum resolution, 1080p just doesnt cut it.
I tried 4K video on youtube (via flash player inside Firefox) on Note 10.1 2014.
Result: Crash.
1080p plays fine using the exact same pathway.
Youtube app will not even enable selecting the original 4K video version inside youtube.
i thought they posted a while back that the exynos5 note 3 couldn't playback the superhd videos it took so it shouldn't be a surprize that this one won't either. kinda odd that they can't though.
The Exynos 2014 Note 10.1 can play back 2 Full-HD streams simultaneously without any hickup. 4K playback might be a bit too much.

[Q] About 4K videos in MX Player

Hello everyone.
I bought a Xperia Z5 Premium Dual last month and I want to use it for movies. But the app Movies doesn't support DD 5.1 and AAC audio so I used MX Player. Do the 4K upscaling and Image Enhancements work in MX Player? Does the MX Player downscale 4K videos to 1080p? When I watch a 1080p video in MX Player, if I choose SW decoder, the details seem to be smoother (I can't see pixels), and if I choose HW/HW+ decoder, the details seem to be clearer (I can see pixels).
Sorry for my bad English.
That would be an interesting thing to figure out.
The only objective test I can think of doing on a single device is going into Airplane mode and playing a long(~30min) 4K video on both players with identical brightness settings (H/W and S/W on MX).
Afterwards compare battery percentage drop, or ideally measure power consumption with an external application for more detailed results
Whenever the power drain is less, should mean it's rendering at 1080p
If you have some time on your hands, go crazy. I can try it over the weekend
Just use tubemate app (search on google)
You will find the option to download videos in 4k mp4 because z5p supports mp4 format easily and after you will download you can see there will be a 4k lable in album apps (i mean on the latest file you downloaded)
Sent from my E6833 using XDA Free mobile app
That or OGYoutube. OGYoutube is the normal Youtube app with a few extra features, such as downloading.

Anybody got an good HEVC video file player yet, that is not jerky during playback?

It seems a lot of people are converting video`s movies/anime to hevc h.265 format as the file size is a lot smaller for the same quality.
But i have to convert them to standard h.264 mp4 files before they will play on my T800 otherwise they are virtually unwatchable as they are super jerky and kill the battery life.
I have tried a few players from the Google Play Store but they are a waste of time.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
John.
Hi, i've been looking for this as well. Most of the small tv shows files (720p, not high profile) plays flawless with MX Player HW decoder, however, not the same luck with 1080p, in that case it gets really jerky. I hope they could solve it with a future Android M update. I'm curious if there's any good room that could play all these files without getting jerky.
So far i have to use SW decoder for those files with jerky playback, but in these cases the battery gets drained..
There is software available to let the S1 hardware decode HEVC files (uses opencl to hardware decode) much better for the battery and not jerky?, but as far as i know it has not been used in any Android video players you can buy unless you are an manufacture and want to buy thousands of licences for each one.

On lollipop Samsung added HEVC support, try using a stock based lollipop rom. Currently aosp based roms do not use the L kernel so HEVC isn't enabled.
But does that not require an cpu that has hevc hardware acceleration, The Tab S1 does not have it, so unless they bought the opencl codec licence (which cost money so Samsung is unlikely to have done it) we will still have jerky playback and high cpu usage.
Maybe a Tab S1 owner can check this out, but i am quite certain we have tried this before.

Android uses its own decoder and codec for it which was also added in Lollipop libstagefright_soft_hevcdec.so
I can play hevc encoded tv shows on my klimtwifi and klimtlte running aosp (Just tried it)
Is that using the built in video player, or a third-party one, have you tried an 1080p movie, as the lower resolution video`s have always played alright on mx player, it`s the 720p and above is when they become jerky.
what specific rom are you using and were can i get it?
Thanks
John.

I have not released a cm-13.0 build for t800 yet i would recommend trying the aosp rom in the android development section
I will wait, I am not messing around with some other rom, I will just have to keep converting the hevc video`s
It`s nice to know the hevc playback can work.
Thanks

Even though my T800 will play HEVC H.265 i have not really tested it on my S1 as it`s not true hardware decoding and suspect it will be a battery drain (let me know if it`s not) On my Android TV Box i have test over 20 players and Kodi and MX player seem the best, But far from perfect.
I have found out that even if your SOC supports hardware decoding, you need to have a supporting codec for each video format that stands between the SOC and the video player software for hardware decoding to work or you will only get software decoding(cpu hog) the codex are installed by the manufactuer in MM for example and some manufactures are better than others at supplying the correct codec`s
You can download apps from GP that will show you a list of audio/video codec`s on you tablet.
I watch a lot of Anime and a lot of video`s uses H.264 10bit, and it`s even harder to find a SOC or supporting codec that will support this.
I avoid playing H.265 and H.264 10bit on my T800 and convert almost everything to H.264 8bit to 432p as the quality is good enough for me and it keeps the files small, but it can take a long time to convert the files, I know i could stream them if i wanted.

Playing Hi-res (4K, 10bit, HEVC) video on HTC 10

Hello!
According to Snapdragon 820 specifications, this SoC can play 4K video with 10 bit HEVC encoding. Just for interest, i upload sample video (www.demo-uhd3d.com) and use MX and VLC players. But both of them plays videos very slow, looks like slideshow.
So not clear, why our device can not play such files? There are lack of needed codecs (that must be instaled by device manufacturer), or I need specific player?
Thank you.
Did you try different codecs in mx player app while playing?

Yes, of course. HW, HW+ - no one working. May there is error in fiel coding, but not celar what exactly causes this problem. Some users says that some 4K files can be played.

Easily.. I mean mostly 4K files can be played..
Sent from quite brutal hTc 10 ..
Downloaded the Transformers_extinction_Trailer_4K UHD, 10bit, from your site you provided and it played without any issues using mx player pro with the 1. 8.6 audio codec to play AC3.
VLC and Power DVD couldn't play it.
