Our family took the technically free at&t deal to switch to the galaxy s22 phone (256 GB model) by trading in our galaxy s7 phones, and I've been tinkering with the settings, turning a whole host of stuff off because forget auto-installing apps and whatnot, but when I was copying my old phone's pictures over manually (forgot about smart switch, sue me [but don't pls]), the process slowed down very much. Every 15 seconds or so, my windows would give the Asterisk sound, but the green progress bar wouldn't make it past the 1% mark, and when trying to close the file window on my desktop, it'd take the same 15 seconds time to do so, and to stop this I had to unplug the phone from my desktop. Then I had to upload everything to dropbox and download it through the app onto my phone just to export it that way.
Since im still making sense of the phone, is there a concrete reason behind this slowdown, some phone setting or whatnot, because i uninstalled/reinstalled the Samsung USB Phone/Device Drivers from the software downloads portion of samsung, and there's no speed increase. My galaxy s7 was faster, so unless this is a quirk of the firmware itself or something else....idk, help pls?
One or more of the files may be corrupted.
I ran into this the other day on my N10+ going from SD card to a OTG flashstick with a 50gb folder with more than a dozen subfolders and 20 loose media files. It kept crashing on the last 2 or 3gb. I tried copying a couple different ways, nothing worked until I discovered a corrupted avi file and deleted it.
Copied it straight up.
Find the root cause, it could be malware that inadvertently got downloaded. This includes jpegs.
I doubt its malware, all the pictures I did were from the default camera app on my old phone, and I figure if I did it through smart switch it wouldn't have any problems, but ill look through my pictures, delete some, maybe put mcafee livesafe on there and run a few scans to see if it picks up anything before I uninstall it (seriously, the app is a resource hog no matter what hardware its on, mobile or not). ill make another reply if I find some kind of resolutiuon and result(s)

Never use SmartSwitch to backup critical data especially media. Never clone media files ie music databases. Never password protect backups. Keep it rock stupid simple.
Copy/paste then compare size, and folder/file count. Inspect at least some of the data for readability.
Malware is always possible. The scripted jpegs on Android tend to only effect the folder they're in. Was that avi file I found malware? Who knows? I don't care as I just delete it and move on unless it raises its ugly head again. The point is I found the cause and removed it.
The scripted Android jpeg I encountered did it's thing when opened. It damaged many loose files but no files that where in folders. Some files I repaired, the rest I deleted. The malware jpeg I deleted first though and it was only by cause and effect that I found it. Fortunately it was the download folder so it's reign of terror was brief; had that been a large database it could turn into a digital blood bath.
All downloads go to the download folder and stay there until vetted. Check all files by opening them there before moving them elsewhere. Delete any unknown ones without opening. Any file that is in doubt especially apks, executables scan with online Virustotal.
Keep email in the cloud ie Gmail.
I'm running on Pie but haven't had any malware damage in over 2 years and it's in part because of how I handle all downloads... carefully.

I scanned the manual backups of my pictures on my desktop with mcafee livesafe and superantispyware and neither of them found anything bad, unless i should use more scan programs, but whether its on my phone or desktop, I think I got enough, anymore and im just hoarding antivirus programs, and I don't wanna do that

Over the years I found 2 scripted jpegs that were found by observing what happened when they were opened. There's no guarantee malware will be detected.
I ran a Malwarebytes scan occasionally. It found a trojan preloader I missed in the download folder, which I police daily now. This one downloaded itself, it slipped through the Samsung browser in spite of settings.
On Android antivirus is a waste of resources. Most victims install or download the malware themselves.
However anytime Android behaves strangely malware should be considered a possibility.
No idea how that file that screwed up my transfer got corrupted or if it was malware.
It acted like malware, regardless, deleting it fixed the issue. It took some time to track it down. Point being when you see odd behavior you don't ignore it, you find the root cause.
I think I fixed it somehow? I searched for reset in the settings and found reset network settings, reset accessibility settings, and reset all settings, so I chose reset all settings after backing up my current settings. After my phone restarted, I plugged in my phone and tried copying a 500MB sized file to my internal storage, and despite it taking a full minute, it actually finished without the problems I had before. Granted, now it seems only for the one file I just did, because after I tried one file and tried to do another, it stopped about halfway into copying a 400MB range file and gave me the same problems again. ffs fml
hopefully this is my last post (I swear if it isnt im tearing up the cable I got), because after trying multiple cables we got and different usb ports, I think I identified the culprit(s): my USB-C cable (the one I use to charge it) and my desktop's front-facing USB ports.
My desktop is an XPS 8700, and its taken on some age and some injuries due to power surges and what not, most of all the front-facing USB ports are wiggly as all hell, and occasionally choose which cables to like and which to not like. So I took the cable I usually use to charge it with and plugged it into a different usb port and tried copying over a set of files totaling 1GB+change to the internal storage, lo and behold, it copied over and no stopping halfway and cancelling the transfer because of it. Then I tried another USB-C cable we got (from a different piece of hardware) and used it on my front-usb ports, did the same thing again, 100% completion like the others did
The end result is my desktop being an ornery POS as usual and choosing which USB port likes which USB cable no matter how good I take care of both pieces of hardware. In the end, ill probably be getting a few more cables for our three phones and keep the cable I usually use with it for a different piece of hardware. This was one rabbit hole of a goose chase

I can see a lot of techie people getting very upset about what's been revealed about WP7S, and I'm starting to think that although I too was initially a bit ruffled, much of it really doesn't matter.
1. No SSD support
I always buy the biggest SSD I can, shove it into my new phone, and promptly forget about it. I can't recall the last time I upgraded to a bigger SSD without upgrading my phone at the same time, such is the rate of progress. Indeed, the iPhone, with its internal memory, always seems to be one step ahead of SSD-capable phones. My HD2 has a 16GB SSD, the iPhone has 32GB of memory. 32GB SSDs aren't even available. I never, ever take the SSD out of the phone once it's in there. So for me, removable memory just isn't an issue.
2. Multitasking
I thought I needed this, but looking at the apps I use on my HD2, I can only see one that really genuinely need multitasking, and that's Palringo. As far as I can tell, chat is going to be integrated into the Panels thingy so I probably won't even need to install Palringo anyway. Pausing apps when I switch away from them will be just fine with me.
3. Marketplace
I've never developed my own apps, nor do I intend to, nor do I operate in a corporate environment. Downloading apps from a central marketplace will be 100 times easier than having to trawl through Handango etc for some frankly pretty ****e apps to try to find decent ones. At least the apps in the store will have gone through a vetting process. I just hope Microsoft aren't as draconian as Apple in what they reject. Also, when downloading an app I won't have to choose between speed (install to memory) and space (install to SSD). I will get BOTH without having to decide at all. Sounds good to me!
4. Inter-app communications etc.
I don't believe WM6.5 apps do that anyway!
There you go, flame away - I for one will be much happier with a WP7S phone than I have been with WM6.5.

I don't like the idea that i have to install apps through marketplace, unless the downloaded apps could be saved on the internal/external storage so i can manually install it again if i have to hard reset my device if nescesary.
Imagine you're on vacation, somewhere across the border and suddenly you need to hard reset your device because... because you just had to.
now... installing apps through marketplace requires an data connection, wich of course, you don't have (besides wifi) if you were in another country. Or you'd like to pay for data roaming.

there is no external storage so without a pc u wont be able to put your info back on without a wifi or data connection which would work like myphone does now. not sure how u would put your apps back on without re downloading all of them from marketplace.
saying this im guess the phone is less likely to go wrong and will be very similar to how a iphone works.

From my own perspective, I never keep copies of the cab files for my apps on my phone anyway, so that wouldn't help me. Nore have I ever had to do a hard reset on my HD2 (except once for the dreaded lock password issue, now I don't use a lock password). Plus, as there IS NO SSD to store them on, it's kind of a moot point.
I don't like that Marketplace is the only way to install app.
That means MS can potentially shut out competitive product like google map, search etc. This is getting more like apple to me.
Also, if not SD support and no USB Device mode, it's a no go for me.
I'd like to store photos, music and even pc apps etc on my SD in case I need it.
Plus, should your phone become bricked, good luck trying to access to all your content.

Microsoft have already said they will allow all competitors' apps, and I hope that will always remain true. Regarding USB file transfer, have Microsoft specifically said it won't be supported? (I'm not sure)

ms has said u cant use wm7 as a usb drive, they also said that bing must be used for search, not sure if it must be used for maps too.

I think you still access photos, music etc. with the new media sync application (forgot the name). Indeed it seems to be a major feature of WP7!
But I also use my phone as USB stick, using it for non-media stuff, which I assume won't be possible anymore.
I experienced once incident during holiday to Spain, this is real story.
I was using TomTom and HTC Kaiser. All of sudden, the TomTom application stuck, I could not interact with it ... except hitting the soft-reset hole.
After soft reset, all content in my sd card gone, including the TomTom map.
I really hate that situation because I rely only on my TomTom
Lessen learned, I always keep second SD card on my bag during holiday which contain exactly the same.
So there you go, I think SD card is required.
The thing is, I am willing to sacrifice without SD Card. Probably the above incident was caused by "bad" sd card. With internal storage, probably it will be much more reliable. Ok that's fine.

I want a way to EASILY store my files (big files) on the phone. Files like software utility etc. That's handy.
With no file manager ... and no sd card slot, I cannot picture this possible easily.
Probably I could use Zune software (ala iTunes)???
But that will defeat the purpose of having those files available all the time. Because other PC might not have Zune software!
Hmm, using email to transfer file? Yeah right, 3G is still slow compared to direct copy from sd card ! And imagine when roaming to pay data connection.
This is what I really dont like about WP7 ...
I can live without multitasking and side loading, no problem with that.

I remember yesterday, when someone asked Joe Belfiore ... "Will there be Mac support?"
His answer was something like "You dont need PC to be able to use Windows Phone 7 Series" ... "Try to not use PC" ...
Hmm, it'll be a shame to lose the USB drive functionality, but I only really ever used that to load cab files onto my phone (which will be moot as marketplace will be the way to get apps) from my work PC, but I can live without doing that, especially as I shouldn't have been doing that anyway (ahem).
An advantage of using the Zune software to put files onto the phone will be the inbuilt compression and media format conversion though, which will be nice.
I should add that I carry a 32GB memorystick around with me (it's on my house keyfob) and use that for pretty much all my file transfer needs. My phone is so stuffed with mp3s that it has virtually no free space on its SSD, hence it's pretty useless for file transfer anyway!

At this moment, I also carrying 4GB super small micro sd card on my pocket.
I think I need to find one as a key-chain.

Satnav application vendors often distribute their maps by selling you an SD card with the maps pre-installed on it. How's that going to work without an SD card slot? Are people going to download several gigabytes worth of maps over the data connection?
The way it works for iPhone is pretty straightforward - downloads over 10MB go via iTunes (you can choose to download everything this way, BTW).

I really don't understand this no SD card thing. If I interpreted the post where I read that information correctly. It's not even that there are no SD cards allowed, it's that they don't want removable SD cards.
I think they said the vendor could have an unremovable SD card if they chose (behind the battery). I'm hoping I mis-interpreted this, I see little reason or sense in having SD card support but making them non-removable. That would just further upset me about that .
But I guess isn't not that big a deal since there's no file management on the device which is an even bigger problem. It's almost like they're trying to alienate their business clients.

Anyhow as far as I can work out most of the new stuff in WP7S compared to WM is lame and actually relates to loss of functionality, with only the potential for easier development being offered in return. If useful apps materialise then maybe the damage won't be that bad but they are sacrificing everything for potential gain.
The fact is though that windows mobile grew on PDAs, and I think most people who want a WM phone want a PDA with a phone attached to it, with the feel of a "PC" in your "pocket". WP7S seems targeted at a completely different consumer who just wants a phone with a flashy touchscreen display. The thing is iphone does that perfectly well already. I don't see anything I want in WP7S, and there's nothing that has been described that I can't get elsewhere in an ordinary (modern) phone. It had better be a better product because I doubt there would be any customer loyalty between 6.5 and 7.

Well you obviously understand the no SD card thing - there's nothing you could do with the card in WP7S with no file system access.
Apologies if this has been posted before, I did look but couldn't seem to find the exact same issue.
I've had my phone for just under a year, no real problems. But late last month it restarted over night and since then it started freezing every night when I left it charging. At first I thought it was crashing but the charge light would still be on but all buttons would be unresponsive. The only thing I could do to regain control of my phone was to remove the battery.
I contacted HTC who suggested factory reset...which I don't really want to do. As my phone was only freezing once a day (over night) it wasn't all that bad. To be honest I thought it was an issue with it charging.
For reasons I can't remember, I removed an app that I never used; it was using 2mb space and couldn't be put on the SD. Once removed, the freezing stopped happening and there was much rejoicing...until last night.
I decided to download another app and the freezing happened again over night. I've since removed that app but here's the rub, why is this happening?
The fact it's happening whenever I download more apps to my phone seems to point to a memory issue but my phone has 1.6GB on the SD and 53mb on the phone itself.
I still haven't tried a factory reset and as I've had it less than a year, HTC said I can return it; but there's no guarantee this will fix it and I like my little phone, so if there's a way I can resolve this issue I'll rather do that before trying more drastic measures.
I hope someone can help.
Are you rooted? If that's the case, and, you are charging the phone when it is switched off, what you are experiencing is a known bug.
Also, although unrelated, it is really not recommended to charge your battery overnight or for extended periods. Charge only till it is full.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the charging though Since I bought it (July last year) I had been charging over night on most days but I'll switch to just charging it for a few hours till it's full now.
I guess in case it'll help I'll give a little more info: While charging I leave my phone switched on and I rarely restart my phone unless it drops signal. Only recently with the freezing have I had issues with using it and had to restart it frequently. I'm not a techie person so I've not played around with the phone other than putting on apps, where possible I put them onto SD. My phone is unlocked and I use it on the O2 network.
make a factory reset bro. it tells u whether the issue is with hardware or software. kept under charging mode just heats up the phone by a little level. this dont normally freeze the phone.
but if u r downloading something with data connection, or bluetooth, or wifi and kept charging overnight, then the battery gets overheated heavily which freezes the phone. it is quite normal and is experienced by people who keep overnight downloads.
and further there may be application conflicts in ur phone, which make it slow and freeze. i expect this is the issue with u.
if u r sure that u r not using any data connections, then i suggest u to factory reset ur phone. before that backup all the data. i dont understand what makes u from not doing the factory reset.

I would have thought if this was an application issue it would have started after installing this dodgy app and also continue until I unistalled. This hasn't been the case. When it started happening I hadn't installed anything other than updates for weeks or maybe months. During the week while it was having this issue, I had installed 1 app (Photoshop).
It has only frozen once during the day, right after work; that was the time I finally thought I'll have to factory reset. So I was writing down all my apps in a notepad so I knew what I had and where they were (I'm fussy with my screen setup). I decided to remove 2 apps I never used (8Pen and Photoshop), I thought I'll leave it 1 night just in case and that night though it never froze, so I didn't reset.
Since then it's been working fine for 3 weeks till last night when I downloaded another app. So it seems random, it's not associated with a particular app and comes and goes.
The reason I'm cautious about factory resetting is that it deletes everything. Though I have backed contacts up to MyLookOut and to my SD card, I'll still loose my apps and data and so I'm not keen on doing it. Not using wifi means it's heafty on my 500mb data package to redownload them again and then I'm unsure if i'll have to upgrade to Froyo again.
End of the day it just seems like a "Turn it off and on again" answer and as it comes and goes and doesn't seem to have a reason why it happens so randomly I don't want to factory reset if there's another way.

u r worrying about loosing data on factory reset. but do u know that u can backup each and everything on the phone including the apps downloaded from market.
ok, i will try to give a software solution. first uninstall all the file managers and app managers in your phone. then go to market and download "ANDROID ASSISTANT". this little app has many features. explore it and u will know its potential. it has a nice option called QUICK BOOST. when u press this quick boost on a heavily stuck phone, u will feel like ur phone got a new life. it makes the phone response faster in seconds.
and further it has auto boost option, which can be set to a minimum of 10minutes. this auto boost will help u in preventing the freeze issue. hope it works. the present version of android assistant is 2.3.3

I've read that during a factory reset even apps which are apparently "saved" on the SD card are removed because they're not 100% saved onto it. So if you know of a way to back them up I would be most grateful.

yes freezing also happens when there is very low phone free memory. when ur apps get filled in phone and keep on decreasing its memory, it is more likely that ur phone gets freezed. its always better to keep a 30MB free phone memory. remember data and cache also use phone memory, so the free memory will be generally unpredictable with minor errors. have u got any idea of a windows pc freezing. a windows pc freezes if there is some errors in registry. that is the reason why i have suggested u to make factory reset first to eliminate the software issues.

firstly i wanna introduce u about the backing up of applications.
android applications will be in the .apk file format and u know this. this .apk file is an installable archive just like .exe of windows OS. opening the .apk files from a file manager installs the program files of that application. but when u download the applications from android market, u will not get the .apk files. the android market installs the program files directly. but we can still create an .apk file from these program files and app managers will do that function. both the files im attaching u below will do that function.
here im attaching u two applications (.apk files)
one is APP CONTROL. i recommend u to use this. it can be used with android assistant installed. both of them work fine. the APP CONTROL version i gave u is an older version and is a full version. A newer version of APP CONTROL is available in the android market, but it is not free. so i strongly recommend u to use this. it has a great feature to backup all ur apps at a single click. the apps backed up by it will be saved as .apk files under the path
MEMORY CARD/backups/apps
i recommend u to back up all ur phone and mem card apps at a time with a single click. explore this APP CONTROL.
i dont want to give a detailed explanation of the other file ANDROID APP MANAGER, because i wont recommend u to use this. im just attaching u this because of only one reason, that APP CONTROL is presently not a full version. using of it is entirely at your personal intrest.
I took your advice and did a factory reset - backed everything up so it wasn't as painful as I first thought it would be. Managed to reinstall everything and so far so good (touch wood) but the original issue was sporadic and so only time will tell.
I have noticed since the reset that my phone memory, which was 50mb before, is now 100mb. So hopefully this will mean that I'm not forced to limit what I download.
Such a shame the Wildfire doesn't have more memory

that 50 MB and 100 MB may be due to app memory + cache memory. if u have interrupted the download android apps from market, and have every downloading app partly downloaded and interrupted. then that partly downloaded apps go to the cache memory of MARKET application. u can try and check this.
similarly there will be cache memory for every application. i expect all those cache memories got built up and ate 50 MB of ur phone memory. if it is so, it says that how vigourously u have used ur phone regarding applications.
these cache memories wont get cleaned just on restrating phone, and u should manually clean them either through the phones inbuilt process or through the applications having keywords of cache cleaner.
there is somewhat that i dont like in android apps. which is the application doing extra functions other than its name. now a days, u can see many file managers in android market. and those file managers suppose to have the fuction of explorer of android file system. but they will have additional features like combined app manager, cache cleaner, uninstaller, installer.
this makes the different applications conflict with each other and slow down the os. thats the thing i hate here. i have to choose priority in apps, and sometimes need to avoid nice apps due to that reason.

HOPE U HAVE ELIMINATED THE SOFTWARE ISSUE
OK. hope the phone froze without even single app being installed.
suppose if the freeze was a software issue, then u have backed up the app causing freeze. let us think this like a virus. if u had reinstalled that app again, ur phone is likely to freeze again.
i haven't heard of virusses if android os, but i have seen many antivirus programs for android. even the great kaspersky recently added its support for android. the existance of antivirus programs proove the existance of virusses.
so, try to remember if u have installed any backed up app frm mem card.
Im personally guessing that ur phone freeze was not a software issue. ur phone might be having hardware issues.
giving to a service centre might solve the problem, but im not pretty sure. and moreover, if they update ur phone to froyo, u cant even root. (i dont remember what ur phone is on now). and even u cant make those service centre guys see ur problem, as u dont know when it freezes. i expect, what all they are gonna do to ur phone is factory reset, or reinstall the os.
Hi guys - long time lurker, first time poster.
My question is, does anyone have any little grievances with the stock note II software? I've owned android devices before, but ditched them for iOS a year or so ago, back when android was still a hot mess. I definitely believe it's caught up to iOS in terms of stability, performance, and smoothness. I finally feel like android is finally finished enough where I'm ready to take the plunge and pick up a note II.
Things that have driven me mad from previous android phones: audio lag / stuttering, stock software crashing/stuttering, the phone not stopping your music when you pull the headphone plug and blasting audio (even for a half second) through the speaker, stupid pop-up boxes that inform you you've either started or completed charging, etc. etc. etc.
Lazy, stupid developer decisions like this drive me absolutely mad and make me leave a platform that I otherwise consider superior. I want to be happy with stock until a stable CM10 comes out.
Therefore, is there anything like this that happens with the stock note II at all? Thanks - on the fence!
You no longer get a pop up window verifying charging is complete, you do get a notification in the Status Bar though - either connected or finsed.
Audio Lag / stuttering hasnt been around for a while, I remember that in the OG Droid but havnt seen it in along time, I guarantee you that you wont find anything to stutter up the note.
Depending on the application, audio will stop when headphones are removed. Pandora / Stock Music Player / Netflix.. HBO Go - Xfinity - CineM all continue to play when unplugged. " hope that helps"
Battery Life on the Note 2 will blow away any other device out there outside possibly the Razr Maxx "Havnt compared"
Random System crashes are non existent on this device, especialy if you stay stock. Of course going with any customer ROM you can expect something .. I devvelop roms and I promise you, there is ALWAYS room for error, however with that being said, there is always room for error on stock as well.
Overall, I can see why you may have left Android in the beggining, however I will say that Android 4.1 is buttery smooth and I have not experienced any issues as of yet. I am a power user from he** and cant throw enouhg at my phone yet.
oddly enough my biggest complaint with the note II is that it is harder to "share" stuff than on the S3.
on the S3 you have a little SHARE symbol and next to it you have a "default" service that takes you directly into that (and its separate for different media types so youtube is default for example for sharing video)
just tap that and boom your sharing. but on the note II this is gone. you have to tap the share icon and OF COURSE the ones I use imgur and youtube are all the way at the bottom so I have to scroll down and THEN select where I want to share it too. this is surprisingly annoying now that I know "IT CAN" be much easier.
I REALLY want that quick access default icon from the S3 on my Note II. badly.

Video calling seems to be broken
I have noticed that I cannot make video calls with the apps that I've tried. Neither Skype or Fring work on the Note 2. By work I mean I can see the video from the other person, but they cannot see me. Interestingly Google+ hangouts did work, and I have yet to try tango.
I did reproduce the error on an in store Note 2, so I don't think it's just my phone. I'm just running stock rom, not even rooted. It doesn't work over 3g or wifi. I tried connecting to an iphone 4s and a galaxy s III, I could see both of them they could not see me.
I would also like to gripe about the "buddy" pages. I want to be able to edit the icons in that bottom row to be more useful for my purposes. In the headphones buddy page I want to add my video apps, and they do show up over time but it varies based on what I'm using most often. I want to choose to set them.
I have been able to run Skype. I did it as a test as I don't normally and all was fine.

Did you do a video call on skype? I can voice chat fine, it's the video that doesn't work.
2 grievancies that have been noted but no solutions that I'm aware of!
First is the poor commumication between the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (AFTER ROOT) and my PC. I always get Hardware ID Missing which in turn makes it hard to transfer files from my computer to my phone and vice versa since the PC won't recgnize the phone,
and,
Second, is that I can't view my photos as photos from my phone on my PC. My PC goes into the DCIM or photo folders but can't just load the pictures. I must click on each JPG icon to see what the picture is.
I wish that someone would come up with a program that can be a mass storage transfer instead of the MTP.
So far, everything I have seen with this MTP is not good at all.

first your root issue is a new one. I rooted mine ZERO issues with hardware id stuff ?? so something is hinky on your end
back to the pictures YES the MTP protocol is truly horrible. you have ZERO file access on the device. NONE. 100% of all actions result in the file having to be COPIED to the PC first before you can even so much as look at it. no thumbnails no live view NOTHING
this is not a note II issues its a samsung issue with Jellybean and its horrible.
You can't even MOVE files on the SD card. it has to copy them to the PC and then copy them back to the card. takes a freaking eternity and it hard core sucks. big time.

I initially had the Hardware ID error when connecting my phone to my Windows 7 PC as well. I am not rooted, for the record. As odd as this sounds, I solved the problem by removing the drivers for the phone from the PC. After that, it connected fine.
I will add, though, that the drivers are still installed on my work laptop (because I need adb drivers to tether) and it connects just fine to that. All this combined leads me to believe that it is a driver conflict error with some of the other drivers/files on my home PC. I could probably narrow down where the exact cause is, but I just don't care enough to do it since I have found a usable workaround for my situation.
If you still need ADB drivers, I would still suggest uninstalling and seeing if the phone is recognized without the drivers. Could just be a bad install of the drivers, which is something that happens when you use Windows.
On the subject of MTP, I have to agree that I would like to be able to preview photos as well. While I can move them freely (not sure why you wouldn't be able to), not having previews is mildly annoying. It isn't as convenient as seeing the previews in Explorer, but going to the folder, hitting Ctrl-A, and selecting Preview from the context menu at least lets me see the pictures without having to copy them to the computer.

I'm still not understanding the Hardware ID missing thing. I had my first SGN2 for 13 days and it had this trouble only AFTER I rooted. It was fine and had not one issue prior. I gave it back and Sprint gave me another one. No issues UNTIL I rooted.
Install the drivers, then remove the drivers, then reinstall the drivers, etc..... It's not me, I know that is for sure.
Trust me you CAN NOT move them "freely" you just THINK you are moving them.
when you move a few photo's you don't even notice. trying moving 9gigs of photo's and let me know how it goes.
when you MOVE a file in MTP you not MOVING it. the process is like this.
it copies the file from the phone to your computer.
Deletes the file on the phone.
Copies the file from the computer back to the phone
deletes the file on the computer.
this is why MOVING 9 gigs from one folder to another (which should take 1-5 seconds tops) takes the same time as copying 18gigs. because it has to do it TWICE. so in essence it really IS moving 18 gigs. (same files twice)
this means you CAN NOT "access" any files ON the MTP device "live" it has to copy them to the PC first before you can "interact" with them beyond properties or renaming.
its an absolutely HORRID interface.
you can not even LOOK at a picture on the device you have to COPY it to the PC first. when you access a file its just DOING this for you in the background without you knowing it.
you finally "know it" when you try to perform an operation that should take 5 second and it takes 41 minutes. (move mp3's from one folder to another)
this also means using the phone as a drive is no longer feasible. I used to plug the phone into the computer and PLAY a video from the phone on my laptop screen (using the phone as a usb drive) and at the same time I get a charge.
now I can't even do that I have to COPY the file TO the computer first and THEN watch it.
At least you Windows people can somewhat access your files. On both my Macs neither my SIII or NoteII are recognized in any shape or form. I have to use a wifi explorer app, or unmount and stick my sd directly in the comp. Dunno why they changed from Universal Mass Storage which worked completely fine...
cause they are MORONS. no other reason is valid in my book. morons.
I have the hardware ID error too. From what I've read about it, people are seeing that after installing the Samsung drivers from ToolKit prior to rooting.

Not to derail the thread, but aren't there two easy potential workarounds for this?
1. Use Dropbox/Goggle+, enable automatic upload of camera shots. Photos will be available instantly on home computer. Yes, you're not manipulating the phone images directly, but you've got direct access to copies of the files.
2. Save photos to SD card, pull card and put in card reader. Direct access to files.
True, accessing via USB cable would be nice alternative to have, but it's not like we don't have options.
Grievances with the stock OS ROM/software:
-Intentional gimping of the multiwindow menu by Samsung. Damn it I should be able to put any app I want to in that menu. Plain and simple. Most work in multiwindow just fine. Further, that damn toggle should have transparency be default...NOTHING more annoying than reading something and having text obscured due to idiotic UI.
-Intentional gimping of stock Touchwiz to forbid any selection/addition/subtraction of quick controls in the status bar. NO reason for it. Zero zip nada.
-Kies software. Neat idea. Works pretty well...but gawd, why did they have to build it on the steaming pile of insecure poo known as Java? I would love to permanently delete Java off my computer and Kies is the one reason I have to keep it.
-Gimping of AllShare etc to prevent non-stock ROMs from using media hubs etc. No reason for it. I don't have a hub or use one...but I hate gimping by design.
-Sammy Appstore is all but pointless as of now...there's nothing on it worth it eating space on my device.
-Sprint Connection Optimizer is also crap IMHO.
In the grand scheme of things these are somewhat minor complaints.

For those having issues with the Hardware ID error, I did thread on a partial solution: Linky. Unfortunately, it doesn't give access for ADB, but good enough to access the microSD for file transfers
I haven't had any OS crashes or random reboots. I think I had one boot loop. I did have an issue with the 4-1 power menu with a reboot, but it was a known issue
Overall, the stock firmware is very stable and solid.
I don't have any complaints. Although, S-pen applications are quite limited. Not surprising since this is only the second device with it. Throw in that styluses aren't exactly common in use on the Android platform, or mobile in general. I assume more will come later.
Battery life is good considering the screen size. The only time I'm burning through battery is when I use an MHL adapter, which is a lot at work.
The nice thing, since this phone is on all the major carriers, plus an international version, we'll probably see quite a bit from the developer community.
So I don't get my note 2 until January, but regarding the inability to see files when connected with USB... had anybody tried the app Software Data Cable?

Hello. I have a Galaxy S3 (SGH-I747 on Rogers Canada) with android 4.4 - stock/not rooted. The other day I hooked up my S3 to my laptop using a USB cable. My laptop is running Win XP SP3. I COPIED ALL the pictures from the phone to the Laptop. The pics were visible on BOTH my phone and my laptop when I finished the transfer. I am guessing it used Windows Media as the transfer medium as Kies was not running. While the phone was still linked to the Laptop I thought I would just delete the ones off the phone that I didn't want. I did so. I then unhooked the phone from the laptop. Ouch!!! The pictures I had deleted from the phone were missing from BOTH the phone and the laptop. First I checked the laptop trash bin. Nothing there. I then tried using the Recuva undelete software on my laptop disk as I thought there should be a deleted copy on the disk as they were visible on screen before I unplugged my phone. It recovered some 94k plus jpg's and I spent more than a day scanning them for the ones I needed. Nothing there. So I thought I needed to run an undelete on the phone. HA HA to that!!! It seems that in the android developers great wisdom the phone is no longer considered a mass storage device when hooked to a computer but is a media device. MY interpretation but something like that. Next I did a BUNCH of reading and made a bunch of phone calls for advice. I tried all kinds of tricks. I tried a number of android undelete programs. I had the USB debugging enabled but all the programs I tried didn't recover any deleted jpg's. Even the programs that said they could. It turns out that the phone HAS to be linked as a mass storage device with a drive letter for the android recovery software to work to recover jpg's. It seems to be able to find other file types but not jpg's.
Now here is the interesting part. I tried linking the phone to my desktop (XP SP3 also) and my laptop dozens of times hoping something would change. I believe that once on my desktop and once on my laptop it showed up as a mass storage device. I say "I believe" because I was so conditioned to it NOT showing as a mass storage device that both times I had already clicked on the icon that releases the phone from the computer before I realized there was a drive letter there. Anyway, the time on my laptop that it happened was around the time I had run one of the android file recovery programs. The program had not found any jpg files but when it finished my phone had a message something like "SE has been disabled". blah blah blah. I did a BUNCH more reading and researching about SE on my phone. The best I can figure is that it is a security enhancement designed to stop programs getting at, or changing things in, other programs on the phone and is set somewhere in the policies file - where ever that is.
My question is - Is it possible to temporarily disable SE so I can try and get my pictures back? Thank you, Derek-j

Oooppss...not going to work. First off...my phone is stock and this requires rooting. I don't know much about rooting and don't have a problem trying it but I suspect that would likely over-write some or all of the deleted jpg's I want to recover thus defeating the purpose. The other and absolutely CRITICAL thing is that it does NOT enable USB for internal memory. You'd think that the GOOGLE developers would know better than to remove that important feature, especially in an (upgrade???). I had even thought of going back to one of the older versions but again I think that would destroy some of the file entries and delete the very pics I am trying to get back....

I don't think you can on Android 4.4 without root. Why not just go towel root your S3?

So, since I've got this over monster I've had a shocking number of issues. From sudden influx of crap followers online, people sending photos of some of those little people some people keep as pets.
But, it was probably a month in kept getting restarts that left my wall paper different, noticed key guard was in the running processes and Samsung wasn't able to give me much info at all.
Frequently my antivirus Would randomly flag some huge archive that would appear in Google vending folder and for some reason my weather app for my gear fit updated EVERYDAY
Today a series of unfortunate events and my phone did a factory reset shortly after a drop. I actually find that interesting because I don't know the drop or one of my...well call them gremlins. (Let's face it most of things i have attributed are probably just me going into PTSD blah blah blah... )
But today Turn process I did streamline to get Nic cards logging up and go and build to set up a good firewall get ad blockers going but I wanted to see what happened. And I go my weather app eventually.
And for some reason over in reddit they tend to think permissions like this are normal (I know Samsung's calculator is more than a calculator but mine once had almost every permission with about 800MB storage taken up.
So, This weather app seemed a little abnormal look up the IP address, looked up the company and, I looked furlough their partners for Samsung and Knox (didnt Find the one)
Just a quick assumption;
This module has the Hotspot 2.0 and REALLY likes its certificates. I noticed the option to share Your Wi-Fi with someone is always default toggle on.
If you scroll through the websites what we do you see that they are very proud that they have the edge one of the largest threat assessments for everybody when hop away from 1 of their servers , how many of them there are etc. And I Have this feeling that my device is actually just a nice little go between allowing others access to the internet while gathering their data points.
I can't actually post links but if you do their site plus this thing takes you right to the talk about their platform. Gove the data that goes through phones, that is good for anything from Cambridge analytica code level stealing countries to just figuring out how stable and great 5G is

I've seen the Address actually go by in my primary bp and add blocker but that 1 doesn't give me per app metrics so not sure what else goes to them.
Also, suddenly I think I know at least partially why they don't want flashed ROMS(?), at least yet.
I'd actually really like to know if anyone else, specifically related to 5G sees these also. Given the timing of that release device and anal FMRi weather app there. And for some reason even though I use a little cheaper company gives me unlimited data they have swapped my network several times between bigger company the smaller company. Its same towers and stuff usually so no big deal but, doesn't normally do that. (Have noticed that actually from the Galaxy store I see that quite often, but the "same" download from play store different version number less permissions)
(By the way hello this is the 1st device actually looking to rooting, prior the risk of that access to someone else was too much. Thanks for letting me join the community, I do hope I catch on quick ans don't drive any one too crazy)

A drop shouldn't cause a factory reset... if it was caused by software you have an apk(s) that are trashware.
A 3rd party launcher put mine in a boot loop... twice.
If you did a recent firmware update it may have corrupted that load, reload as you did.
A virus or trojan are suspect as well. Run Malwarebytes and Trojan scanner. Some malware may not always be detected.
If you suspect a virus after a reload be careful what you load and bring into the system including the on SD card and any backups. Start with the base load and add only apps from Playstore at first. Go from there if it runs ok. Be wary of updates, one at a time, look for issues as you progress.
Same with backup data... if it's there you'll need to isolate it or dump all the data.
Use a package disabler like PD MDM to block bloatware from running and to troubleshoot.

I was worried so, as I'd never seen it i just know these things actually include that hardware backed encryption. I had worries that I had knocked that loose and might have issues with it later. (Accelerometer is off bit it seems now)
I can say likely:
1. Third party lock screen with data wipe. Not highly reviewed but was but trashy. May have accidently in the tussle woke the screen with motion and performed a wipe.
2. Package disabled. I play with what I can get away with disabling. Some Knox stuff is bit touchy.
3. I'd managed to start process of adding a second secure folder on a secondary profile. It hadn't like it but stayed working.
Or combo 2 & 3 but lock screen most likely I'd say

Get a good case like the Bolt. High G impacts can cause internal damage but usually not especially if in a case.
I don't use secure folder, encryption or any screen lock especially 3rd party. Any apk you give administrator rights to lock the phone can effectively trash your OS load in a heartbeat.
Have had passwords get corrupted (rare) before and gotten totally locked out on a laptop bios.
That machine is now useless.
On Androids you can reload to recover if all else fails but a reload takes a lot of work...
