General Just How Awesome Is This Thing? (First Impressions) - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

I've been modding phones since the OG Razr days, and even though I don't do a whole lot anymore, I still consider phones a hobby. I was going to wait for the Fold5 or the Google Fold, but after doing a buttload of research (my normal M.O.), I decided that the Fold4 was ready for prime time. Throw in the fantastic trade-in deals and it was hard to say, no. As I told my wife, I haven't been this excited about a phone in a long time. I have to say, I'm impressed. Haven't had it quite twenty-four hours yet, but it's blowing me away. Obviously, the Samsung screens look beautiful. Sure, the outer screen is narrow, but not unusable. Especially if you swipe type. The inner screen? Well, that's what it's all about, isn't it? It's gorgeous, I love all the real estate, and being able to fold it up and throw it in my pocket is icing on the cake. I plan on reading more, and using it for GPS/Waze in the car is freakin' awesome! I'm really loving it. My only complaint, so far, is the sideways scrolling in the app drawer. Come on, Samsung! Continuous perpendicular scrolling is much more convenient. Thoughts? How do you folks like yours? Tell us what you like and dislike.

Dude, download GoodLock and you will love it even more.

Cool! I stopped rooting with my Pixel 6 Pro. I could ad block without root and with dark mode baked in I was somewhat satisfied, but I did miss Substratum. This is like Substratum without root. Love it! Thanks.

you do have HEX installer for Samsung, but atm it does not work on Fold4.

The fold for is such an impressive phone. I'm sorry that I waited this long to dive into the fold arena. I use the flip 3 and flip 4 but got rid of those phones and this one takes the cake. I don't think I can ever go back to a regular slab phone again.

coming from a note 9, i don't think i'll be able to go back to a slab phone. i've been holding off buying anything and for the longest time my note 9 was my daily driver. if i wanted to upgrade it, it would be something different. i was almost tempted to get the fold 3 but opted to wait until the fold 4 came out. the outer screen being wider than the fold 3 (ok, just a little bit) and the cameras were the clinchers. my wife got me the fold 4 for father's day after she saw me reading/browsing and making numerous trips to jb hifi to inspect the phone on display. the spen is fantastic and the only thing i lost from the note 9's pen is the camera bt remote and the sound it makes when i take out the pen (my son asked me to change the remove and insert to sounds of a light saber). took me a day or so of fiddling around and setting it up to the way i want it to be. it's now the same layout as my note 9 which suits me. i'm still using nova launcher with a klwp preset for the inner screen. outer screen is using just a static, black wallpaper. goodlock has proven to be very useful as the alternative to one ui's taskbar and it's provided me with an easy power off and screenshot buttons. the only shortcoming i've seen so far is sometimes android auto fails to connect with the phone. i know that an update is on the way to fix this but at the moment and easy work around is to clear up the cache from google playstore. other than that, the inner screen real estate is fantastic for browsing, reading books, vids, and all.

Running x2 versions of Cyberpunk on one device whilst also being able to download and extract saved games files from Stadia (try doing that on a system without an oen file management setup).
This thing isn't a phone, its a computer that fits my pocket!!

Me: Verizon will give me all but $99 back for my Pixel 6 Pro toward a Fold4. I'm going to order one.
Wife: You're getting a new phone? You haven't had that one a year yet.
Guess who's Fold4 is being delivered today. She had her 6 Pro for a shorter time than I had mine.

I'm gettuing annoyed with both the skinny front screen and the crease. I have an Oppo Find N and the crease is almost non-existent, as well as a Vivo X Fold. The outer display on the X Fold is the perfect size, I find the Find N a bit small now (think 2009 size) and the crease is also a hell of a lot better. Both these phones were purchased long before the Z Fold4 and neither crease is getting worse over time.
My perfect foldable would be the X Fold hardware (adding in S pen too) with the Z Fold firmware. And add in a micro SD card slot as well.
Until these phones hit the global market however, Samsung won't do anything about this.

the crease is there to get waterprotection which none of the chinese phones have, I rather have that than not, do you really think Samsung can't make a phone with non visible crease?

I'm with you. Give me the water resistance. The crease is a non-issue for me. I really only notice it every once in a while.

Is prefer the lesser crease. I don't tend to swim with my phone & both the Oppo Find N and Vivo X Fold both work fine as long as I don't dunk them in water. The lesser crease helps if writing on the screen with a pen which I do a lot...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus: Too Big For the Human Hand?

http://mobile.pcmag.com/device2/art.../www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2397742,00.asp
Thoughts?
"it's dangerously close to a tablet"
Hardly. It's not even that much bigger than my GFs MT4G and about the same size as my GalaxyS2.
I dunno. I have small hands anyway. The Nexus One seemed a good fit. The jump to get G2x had me a little off... but I got used to it.
Now I juggle the phone on my fingers and palm. Kinda weird but works well. The Nexus pushes my thumb reach even using it this way. Anything bigger and I'll be double fisting it.
Since I have smaller hands, I conformed earlier. I think people with larger hands are having to go through that now with the nexus.
I wouldn't say its too big, but will probably change up a few things.
LTE Google Galaxy Nexus! - Stock
Asus Transformer - OC/UV
Hardly. Its a big phone but still not that much larger then my old Thunderbolt. Maybe he should play with the Note for a little bit to get an idea of a phone flirting with tablet territory.
4" does seem to be the ideal one handed phone for everybody. the atrix still feels good in my hand. i do have a hard time one handed sometimes but actually my bigger problem is the next phone. will i settle for something smaller after such a nice screen. probably not. i do like what samsung did to the hd screen. it looks a looooot better than the plus screens. up until now, amoled has been oversaturated with the colors. this screen is great. and still has the nice contrast and pop because of the deep black.
Yes. I think it's a bit too big. The rezound fits my hand better.
But that's the price you pay for freedom.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I'm 6" with pretty big hands, and i can hit the Q in portrait mode with the middle of my thumb. (right handed) So for people with smaller hands, they should still have no problem reaching any of the letters in portrait mode.
I think its the perfect size overall. The device itself is only a tad longer than a Bionic, (about a half a mm or a mm) the same width, and thinner. I really don't see what anyone is complaining about.
Due to the rounded corners it's a hell of a lot easier to use with one hand than my RAZR.

It is a damn big phone; that was my primary concern about. Having no problems using it though.
it depends on the person's size. i'm 6' 5" and have big hands. this Nexus' still feels like it's a bit too small for me. i look forward to the 5"+ phones.
For me the SGS2 felt bigger. I can reach stuff much easier on the GN

I think that the nexus is ok for people with above average sized hands, but really, if your hands are too small for the GNEX, then they are too small for most of the 4.3" devices out there right now anyways:
Here is a comparison between the GNEX and the DroidX (4.3"). There really isnt that much of a difference.

Here are the two phones in my hand how one might hold them. There is again minimal difference. Basically, this says that if you can use a 4.3" phone, which has become the defacto size for android super phones, then you can just as easily use the GNEX's huge 4.65" display.
The GNEX:
and the DX:
(Note that I am 6' 3" and the diagonal of my hand is about 9.5", so the usability will be better or worse depending on how big you are.)
Edited: I hate Box.com. And I wont every try to venture away from the comfort of Dropbox again for cloud storage.
My previous phone was a Galaxy S. I do think that was the perfect size for my hands. Although i still couldnt stand the hardware buttons on that phone and the gsm nexus doesnt feel any heavier and seems thinner. But after you get use to the gnexus screen the gs seems so little. Even my wife's iphone 4 seems tiny now.

No problems using it, but would you prefer it to be smaller? Or do you like this size better now that you're used to it?
Seems a fine size to me.
I have rather large hands (glove size 8.5) and my opinion is: the GN is on the far end of "large". This is probably the maximum size a smartphone can have and still be (relatively) easily operated with one hand. For smaller hands it already is too large.
Galaxy Nexus is just under the "to-big-for-human-hans-limit" if you ask me.
The Galaxy Note on the other hand, is to big.
i don't have an issue with the size using it, i have an issue with the size of it + a holster and just putting it into and taking it out of said holster. I liked the nexus one (OGdroid before that, and a myriad of smaller phones before that) i was coming from but was ready for something a little bigger. a little smaller would have been nice since i keep it on my belt, but i like the big screen when i'm using it.
i got the leather case from vzw, but i'll be heading out tomorrow to try to find a nylon one that hopefully will fit the phone but be a smaller total package.

[Q] Advice needed - SGS 3 to Note 2 / dress code compatibility...

Hi guys,
I'm coming back to the Android world and I can't seem to be able to decide on which device to buy, the SGS3 or the Note2...
So give me a hand here. If you owned an S3 and went to Note 2, how was the transition?
I never liked the Note 1, too bulky and square... But it seems the Note 2 is quite something from the features, performance and design point of view.
Furthermore, I want to understand how would such a device go with a business casual/suit&tie dress code.
Looking forward to your comments.
Cheers!
I came from s3, note seems very big at start. U will get used to it. But after a couple a weeks I realize that the note 2 is just too big. It's very similar to s3 but has better battery and bigger screen which seems not as sharp as the s3. I found the s3 more easy to handle with one hand. And it feels very light and small coming from a note 2 after 2 weeks.
Hard choice. Still don't know which one i will keep.

Are you a jeans person or a suit one? Not trying to get too deep into your clothing preferences, just want to understand how does the note fit your day to day activities.
I personally must abide a business casual dress code and sometimes wearing a suit 2-3 days a week is necessary. Not sure how a Note 2 would go with that...

If you wait until Thursday I can pose for a photo with my Note II, wearing a suit...
I think it looks very business-y and clean. Of course if you wrap it in a leather flip case of some sort it will look extremely professional... As long as you don't put a pink glittery case on it I doubt your colleagues will be talking trash about your Note looking out of place!
I use a suit to work, it fits nice in my pants. Only thing is when i go in and out of cars the note 2 falls out sometimes. It's very annoying. And when I'm going to quicksend a message and take it quick out my pants i almost drops it. I have relative big hands. Pretty hard choice between s3 and note 2. I must decide before Wednesday one of them are going back

Thanks for the replies guys, really appreciated!
From what you're telling me, it is quite a sleek device even for business but slightly hard to manage when getting out of a car and pulling out of the pocket.
Now, you did mention that the display looks a little less crisp on the Note 2. That would be strange in my opinion because the Note 2 display uses 3 sub-pixels per pixel and even if the pixel density is lower, it should still look as good if not even better than SGS3.
Nevertheless, does the "one hand operation mode" really make it easier to use one hand with this device? Or is it just a marketing thing?
In my opinion the Display of the Note 2 is sharper. The display of the S3 is quite good, better than awaited for a pentile.
The one hand option positions the keyboard more to the left or right side, it is better to type with this option. But I am not able to access the whole screen (for example smileys at WhatsApp). But at S3 it's also hard for me to reach the smileys with one hand.
Can't decide whether to keep the note or get and S3 additionally and then decide what to do.

Hi. I'm taking up my mba and law degree and also work at a place where we need to dress in formal wear. The note 2 fits in perfectly as long as you get titanium Gray. It's very elegant and sleek. I also suggest getting the official flip cover. Got many compliments already as people think it's a smart looking phone.
Regarding one handed usage, the one handed keyboard etc really helps in operating it using one hand.

Slightly off-topic: if anyone here is from Germany and bought the Note II from the operator, did it come with Operator specific bloatware?
The Titanium Grey version seems to be more dress code-friendly...more subtle-looking than the Marble White, definitely.

severe overheating on Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

How true can this be, just read an article that Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 overheating results in back cover damage. Anyone experiencing severe overheating on the SGTS? http://blog.gsmarena.com/case-samsung-galaxy-tab-s-8-4-overheating-results-back-cover-damage/

It would be horrible if Samsung didn't test for this. It could have have catastrophic repercussions. To both the consumer and Samsungs reputation and wallet.
My 10.5 became slightly warm once. Looks like a bad battery to me.
I've noticed a lot of heat in my 8.4, in the top right corner on the back. It was on full brightness in blazing sun (on a 100 degree day). It got so hot it was uncomfortable to hold.
Mine gets quite warm, but not to the point of being uncomfortable to hold. Just makes my hands a bit more sweaty in this summer heat.

One benefit of the book cover - you don't feel the warmth.

are you being sarcastic? lol because no duh it's going to be hot as well in 100+ degree weather, at 100% brightness. my galaxy S4 did the same damn thing when i was outside in the summer taking pics; that thing would get HOT. that's just samsungs M/O.
anyway, i've been using it a lot daily and haven't noticed it heating up anymore than a usual tablet would.

Not really a tablet gamer, but thought I would try asphalt 8 and see how hot it gets. It does get pretty warm across the middle of the tab although it does cool down pretty quickly afterwards. I would like to know what conditions the owner put his tab through to make the back cover warp like that. Would hate to think this could happen to me in the future.
Hurry up and make the book covers widely available over here in the UK! !

You want to know hot? The Asus TF701 got hot as hell. You couldn't keep your fingers on it. Although it was all metal. This device didn't come nowhere close to that.
Has anyone tried any of the battery saver modes to see if the tablet runs cooler?
The price you guys have to pay for being an early adopter lol.
I'll just wait and see and then decide.
This is option to delay in investment is worth $$$, in finance, this is called ROV (Real Option Valuation). If you studied option devirative, it is similar to an American call option.

I looked for the Book Cover for 8.4 all over the place but no luck. So I thought of one place where no one would expect to find one. Harrods. Got the bronze cover for my bronze S 8.4
Buttoning the covers onto the back of the tablet was rather scary, had to press pretty hard for the buttons to click in.
The back of the tablet must not be made of quality plastic if it warps like that

These overheating Tab S models are about as pervasive as exploding iPhones - i.e., not very. As far as being early adopters, at the pace technology is moving pretty much every new model of anything has an early adopter flavor to it.
Waiting to buy a tablet until the technology has matured is like buying call options? I've traded call options for 15 years. Don't see the parallel. With a call option you are paying a premium to have the right to buy an underlying stock at a set value by a set future date. As time goes by the time value of that option wastes and becomes less valuable unless the intrinsic value tied to the underlying stock has increased significantly. If the underlying value of the stock does not exceed the strike price of the option by its expiration date it expires worthless. Since you are merely waiting to buy the tablet and not buying a contract to purchase at a set future price and date you have no financial risk and therefore no derivative.
Not trying to be argumentative. Just don't see the analogy
isnt this just one incident? has any other people in this community seen that though?
it would be wise to check demo units too before you buy them check if there dents like that.

I'm guessing it was a faulty unit. Thinking more about it, aren't these tablets and phones supposed to have some sort of temperature gauge limit built in if they get too hot?

Can anyone having the Exyno model test it out?
I haven't got my Tab S, but really love to have one.
This really worries me. From the surface reflection, it looks like Tab S's back cover is a little uneven, thinner than the S5.
My previous tablet was a note 8.0. It was getting warm to the point that it was uncomfortable. Dont have that problem with te tab s 8.4, it stays a lot cooler

The back cover on my 10.5 is perfectly smooth and feels solid, not overly thin. There is nothing cheap feeling about this tablet. Not being an Apple sycophant, I'm not obsessed with an aluminum back. Have felt a bit of warmth on the back but nothing significant. This serious overheating seems to be an isolated incident.
I'd like to see some custom manufacturer come up with afermarket aluminum replaceable backs for tablets. That would take care of efficient heatsinking, rigidize the unit, look nice, and be rid of cheap plastic.
Part of the reason I like my Gpad so much!

I work in car workshop and sometimes we stick those carbon-like stickers on car parts, and sometimes I use it to cover other things like laptop cover or speakers so after I got P9 it was a matter of time to use it on it...
I actually did that with my previous Xperias phones, but with P9 this is more tricky to use those stickers because it have rounded edges.
Here is my first test on how it would look on my phone:
As you can see I skipped upper part of phone, because i didnt had in home scalpel that is needed to cut such small parts. Also its first test, so edges aren't perfect.
Later I will get scalpel from work and I will try to cut it properly.
As for actual materials, we use those cheap stickers that you can buy in packs of 1x3m, they cost less than 5 Euro. Rest it standard: hair dryer, scalpel or any precision knife and ruler. That first try took me about 15 min to cut and apply.
So overall I think its better to try it by yourself before spending 10Euro on it. And even if it will not work, you still could stick it on any other device in your home
Wow, that's really slick looking!
Did you put any on the front bezels ?
Nope, I hate putting anything in front of the phone, its look weird and "cheap" and because you swipe your fingers all the time near edges its give that really annoying feel of "its gonna fell off".
I also get new idea how to make it to fit perfectly on back of the phone. I just make precise template on my computer, and then just print it on back of the sticker, and cut it with scalpel. I totally forgot that my printer support any paper, so it dont care if its not perfect A4 format -_-
Nice, looks good.
How easy do you think it will be to remove in case you sell the phone?
I never had skins on my devices before.
damn hard, it could take you almost 5 second to peel it off :]
EDIT: Here is latest try, this time with upper part near camera.
After whole day of testing I can say that its damn good looking and it really hard to accidentally peel it off, even on that small part that have less than 3mm.
Thanks for sharing! sweet pics! of course now im thinking about selling my P9 and upgrading to the P9 plus which means no DBrands for me sadly
I would rather wait for P10 that will be on market somewhere April-June(release should be March April but we can say that it hit global market month later).
I got my P9 last December, but as I said, all that moding and "more poweeer!" stuff is behind me and I just wanted good looking and good working phone, and P9 give me all that. Actually comparing to any other phone on market even mid-end ones.... they all the same in everyday usage, I was testing galaxy s7 for 3 days before getting P9 and.... nothings special, screen is better and VR(that I use and create content for it) is better, but beside that its all the same.
Today its a matter of picking phone based on look and screen size/res, rest work the same honestly, even camera that quality more depend on person who take pic rather than camera it self.
And I think Dband WILL be supporting P10, maybe not instantly but month or two later and it should be there, after all P series, especially P8 lite and P9 lite are really popular so bigger brothers should get all of that fancy addons from other companies like Dband.
Mitch thanks ty guy, I searched for some nice skins for a long time until I gave it up. Now I read this thread and I'm flashed by the website!
XtemeSkins have quite a lot of skin models. I bought a matt skin and its perfectly flush and fit my p9 . You should try it out.

Have a Chance at Getting an S. Need Help Deciding.

Okay so recently I found myself with the chance to get my hands on a Tab S.
It's used, but only as a kiosk application. Everything surface wise is in perfect condition except for some slight screen burning, but that is barely noticeable, and it seems to work just find.
But I recently saw someone say to avoid display models as they tend to have weak battery life due to being on charger all day.
But I'm not sure if ones used as kiosk applications and display models are the same.
So I just figured I'd ask, should I take the chance and get this tablet? I really want an S, and this is the best chance I've found.

I'm thinking it better be pretty cheap, like about 100.00 or less. It might cost about 60.00 or so to have a shop replace the battery. They can be had on ebay for <20.00 and there are videos on youtube to show you haow to open it and change the battery. It is pretty much EOL for this model...don't think that that's official but it's got to be very close. Keep that in mind.
But...I'm also wondering if these chargers really do damage the battery being on 24/7. Don't they have protection for over charging and they seem to taper the charge rate as the battery gets closer to 100%. I know I've ruined several laptop batteries by leaving them in and on the charger. Aren't these batteries of a different technology?
Buy it cheap, do a full reset and run it and see how it does for a week..
Okay I just stumbled upon another for the same price. Not a display model this time, still used of course, the only thing wrong is it has a crack just under 1 inch long in the bottom corner of the screen.
Would this impact how well it worked? Like would I be better off getting the display model? Or would this one be perfect and the crack would just be something I'd have to get used to being there?

All things equal, I personaly would probably go with the one with the 1" crack. That's according to how prevalent the burn-in is. The burn-in more likely effects a larger portion of the screen.

Hmm, one last quick question, the screen burn ones are listed at 10.1 inch. Is there a 10.1 inch Tab S or did they just mislabel it? Don't wanna end up with a tablet that isn't even the one I want.
I would rather go with the cracked screen, but I messaged them to see if it works, and they responded with it seems to, which isn't that clear. I asked for clarification and they haven't responded yet.
there is tab A 10.1 tab S is 10.5inch
Ignored the two I spoke of and jumped on another that the best one availible on the site. Wasn't sure I'd get it as it was bidding and not buy now, and I've never won anything in my life. But I just did it ten minutes ago, cost 240 but I got it.
Oh and it's not just the tablet. It also comes in box, with the charger, usb cable, manual, a samsung smart cover case. And most important of all, an official Samsung Tab S Keyboard attachment, which considering I'm an author, or want to be one, it'll come in real handy.
Here's a pic of my spoils of war.

Oh, and unlike the other two I'd looked at, this one is 32gb's not 16.
I like success stories! Congrats, hope it works well for you! Looks nice and a decent deal I think.
BTW, I'm not sure...but I think BestBuy was the only one, or one of few, places that sold 32GB versions.
Thank you! It was a real close one. I had bid 250 which didn't change or the final six hours, but I couldn't help but feel a little gittery, been watching all this time, no way was I losing this. So in the last minute, I upped my max bid to 275, and when the auction ended it turned out someone had bid 256, but because of my raise I won for 260. It's just crazy to think how if I hadn't raised it then I would of lost.
And 32GB being rare makes alot of sense. There are very few on ebay, and the cheapest at the time was 269. And all it came with was a generic usb cable, not even the official samsung usb cable.
Wish I could tell everyone how my new tablet is, but the stupid thing isn't here yet. Spent 17 dollars on Priority Mail shipping and it's only moved one state over from where it started in the past 6 days. Priority mail my ass.
