Question Android 13/One UI 5 for USA unlocked models - Samsung Galaxy S21 FE

Did anyone with a SM-G990U1/DS model receive the Android 13/One UI 5 update yet?

Thanks. But I'm not looking to download firmware from third party sites, I just want to know if other people with the same model in the US have received the update.

No updates here. Been waiting and also wondering if any US models have gotten Android 13.

@xda-eh Sadly, no.

No update here either and I'm only on the November security update.

Still waiting to receive update, and still on November security patch.

It hasn't been released yet. I'm still anxiously waiting for it!

So is Samsung neglecting the S21 FE?

It probably has more to do with the carriers at this point. They still have to attach all of their bloatware to it.

Part of their commitment has been a very public announcement about consistent support and a minimum number of OS updates. Having purchased a Samsung for this reason, I'm beginning to feel concerned about the device's security.

I have the SM-G990U1/DS and even though it's unlocked it seems to be based on a T-Mobile build based off the "TMB" in the URL I'm given to "learn more" from my last successful update on Dec 20th. According to Sammobile, none of the G990U1 models have received OneUI 5 yet, but the G990U *has*... for the ones carrier locked to Comcast or Xfinity Mobile.

I have a G990U3/DS, factory unlocked direct from Samsung. ATT is my carrier. Still no update for UI 5. Latest update is Security patch November 1

I had the same problem with a G990U1/DS model. I bought it used from Amazon. Although it is unlocked, my carrier is ATT and i could not get visual voicemail to work. I spent 2 hrs with ATT tech support and could not get it to work. For some reason, some aspects of the phone (including visual VM), was native to verizon or t-mobile and could not be undone. Althought the used phone was in MINT condition, i had to return it because it didnt play well with ATT.
ATT has a list of 21FE models compatible with their network and G990U1/DS was not on their list of devices.

But they do support the non "DS" (dual SIM) version. In general, AT&T has become very picky lately on which devices they'll deem "compatible". And for no good reason.

Has anyone tried this for our S21 FE? And, what is XAA?

Someone explained why in another thread. Because the official carrier unlocked model has to work on all carriers, not just one.
By the way, the AT&T Oreo update is better than Verizon's:

Understand the frustration. Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on what we actually get), even though you are on AT&T, your phone is still the unlocked US998 version. The version of Oreo that we US998 owners will eventually get will not be the same as the carrier locked ones, because the version that we receive has to work on every carrier that could actually support our devices, and not just the one carrier that a locked phone uses.
Personally, since LG is the one pushing that version, I hope that it is the 8.1 with the additional software for the AI features.

Oh I know. I was just responding to the person I responded to because it seemed like he/she didn't get that.
That said, it appears that AT&T is rolling out 8.0 with the AI features, so that's what I expect, at best.
I wouldn't mind be surprised with an 8.1 + AI update instead, though.

In theory, yes. In practice... who knows It looks like the cheapest plan is $35 per month, but there may be ways to make that cheaper. I will be with family for the holiday this weekend, I am pretty sure that my parents are AT&T users... I may see about using one of their SIMs for a little bit to see what happens.

Haven't got any ONE UI Update - Galaxy S9 G960W

Nothing to do with Canada, no unlocked phones in the US have it and it's still rolling out to the carrier models.
I have a carrier phone( unlocked) in Canada but haven't received any update.
It's not instant and they don't release these updates to every phone on every carrier at the same time. The entire system would be inundated if they did. If you see reports that people on your carrier are getting the update then wait a week or so before you get concerned.

Yep, I've, I've been on the beta since the beginning and even Samsung admits that unlocked phones get it last, it's the way Samsung has always done it. A lot of rhe carrier models are still waiting. In a way it makes sense, in the US at least, only a small percentage of the S9's are unlocked models. Samsung is going to take care of their cash cows first.

Unlocked typically gets the update after all the carriers push out their update. It's the downside of buying the unlocked version.
I kinda don't understand this. How are these updates linked to carriers? I thought these updates are made available over the internet, so if I am on wifi internet, with no sim inside my phone, what any carrier has to do with this update? What am I missing here? These updates are not available on samsung servers?
I recently bought a Nokia 8110 4g phone. Tried to update its firmware with no success over wifi (KaiOS). As soon as I took out the SIM, it found the update and updated with no problem.
Why my Note 10+ would be linked to any carrier? I did not bought it through a carrier and it is not unlocked. It is bought from Singapore and it is SM-N975F/DS (Global) version, while I am being in Europe.
Can someone shed some light into this?
Samsung holds on the Unlocked firmware update until the carrier's start pushing. At least in the USA.
Yeah, but it is unclear to my what is "carrier pushing" and why it is needed. Over the internet, Samsung servers could do this w/o any form of carrier involvement or knowledge. Why "carrier" is in in this chain?!? It is like my Windows would be updated only when my internet service provider wants it.

Exactly, Google and handset manufacturers need to step in! Imagine if Apple let carriers modify iOS! That would never happen! That was a good analogy by the way! :good:

Same thought. I stay here in Singapore & I bought it directly from Samsung, until now no OTA update. In Singapore, network providers never lock any smartphone, but 3 major networks here have different CSC (SIN/STH/MM1), mine was the non-network Singapore CSC which is XSP, still to no avail. I am forced to update via odin because of this.

This is because the carriers can customise the firmwares for their network. (add in extra apps; turn options on or off etc.) so therefore the carriers have to approve each and every new firmware that's developed by Samsung.
Samsung will do the actual "pushing" of the carrier-cusomised firmware, but only once the carrier gives them permission to do so.

That's highly unlikely to happen.
Carrier customisations are fundamental to how the industry is currently working
Can you give me a sample of this "carrier customization"? Fundamental to carriers or to us the customers?
It's most likely contractual.
So essentially, Samsung waits for the carriers to modify their firmware, release that first then release their UNCHANGED firmware/security patch to the unlocked devices...
That is such a crap model. Common sense would say to release what you can first... This would also push the carriers to release these updates in a much timelier manner as there is no benefit to be on carrier software if the patches are months behind the unlocked devices...

This has been the case since the Galaxy S2, if not earlier.
I suspect (but don't know) that Samsung have some form of contractual obligation to the networks to not release any new features etc. until the network devices (don't forget some networks may have paid a lot to Samsung to have an "exclusive" on the handset when it was released) have had a chance to get said feature.

Didn't even realize they had unlocked models going back that far. I has an S3 and a Note 2, but back then I was on Verizon so there was no thought of carrier unlocked models. It was a V model or nothing, LOL. My next Galaxy after those was an S7Edge, but they were all still carrier exclusive models. I had T-Mobile by them, so I had a G935T. They eventually came out with a G935U, I think, but I never had one.
It wasn't until the S8/+ they had the universal hardware for all carriers, and that's also when I really got back into the Samsung devices and started flashing U1 and U firmware. That was my first experience with unlocked vs carrier model updates. I didn't realize the update situation had been that way since nlthr S2, other than Samsung has always been slow with updates.
Yeah, I said earlier it was likely contractual. Like you I don't know that for sure, but that's the only thing I can think of.

It's been said for a few times already that only the USA & Canada got the official rollout, rest of the world will have to wait until the December update.
On top of that, Google always does time-shift rollouts, meaning even if you are in the right region, it can still take up to 7 or 10 days until you get it.

I would suggest that the firmware variant you want to use is always in relation to where you're going to use it, and nothing else. EMEA (A4) for anyone in Europe, Middle East, and Africa. A repeated question is whether folks in the United States should still use the U.S. Carrier version even if they have a factory unlocked Pixel. The answer is always, if you're on a U.S. Carrier, use the U.S. Carrier version, so I would proceed with the same logic for A4 or the others.

I'm thinking it's just a very, slow rollout. Both the factory images and the full OTA images are still up so I don't think they would pull the rollout via GMS and leave the images up (unless there was a problem with that particular way of updating). But hey, you never know with Google
