Question Android Virgin Seeking Advice - Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

Hello, new to the forum and new to Android after 20+ years of Iphones. I have had the Zfold4 now for a few months, it has been a BIG LEARNING CURVE but enjoying it and loving the phone. Looking for what platform or app are you using and would recommend for calls, messaging, and voicemail. Please forgive my ignorance if this is a stupid question, just an Android virgin that needs some help. Thank you in advance!

I just use what the zfold4 came with. The stock dialer, the stock messaging (which is provided by google), and the stock voicemail - which in my case is the t-mobile visual voicemail. I have tried others but frankly it seems fine the way it came. The cool thing about the google messaging app is that you can also use it from a browser so you can get send/receive messages from you computer as well. I tend to use the facebook messenger for most of my video chats.

Stock apps work fine but Android gives you many options. I will say I have What's App loaded for the friends and family that are on iPhones for messaging and video. I absolutely love this form factor and while I have kept my Note 20 as a backup, I don't see myself going back to the old style.

I use stock apps too. They're working nice. For messeging i use signal instead of WhatsApp but I'm on the minor side. At least all of my friends use signal as second messenger beside WhatsApp.
For Video-Calls i use mostly Signal and Discord.

Please Help - Multi Text Issue With ICS & CM9

Hello everyone, I would like to start by saying thank you to everyone here, all of your posts, info, etc has been excellent in helping me along my way to learning enough about this stuff to be dangerous to mine & my friends phones...we're all still using them so that's a "Win" in my book
Now, on to my problem. I've tried googling & searching posts here, and I don't know if it's just the terminology I've searched but I've found nothing similar to my problem except where a thread had to do with EMBS messages coming through incorrectly.
First off, I'm on a Sprint Branded Samsung Epic Touch 4g Galaxy S II (whew that's a mouthful already) It is on Verizon Prepaid Service.
When I first set this phone up, everything worked correctly - Talk, Text, Web, MMS, WiFi Hotspot, Etc - all working perfectly. I was able to send & receive picture mail through MMS, etc.
I am currently running CyanogenMod 9-20120416-SNAPSHOT-epic4gtouch-Alpha 3
Android Ver 4.04
Kernel Ver 3.0.15-SPH-D710.FD10-CL377892
This is the updates I installed to this phone originally:
gapps-ics-20120429-signed
StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5
update-cm-9-20120416-SNAPSHOT-epic4gtouch-alpha3-signed
mmsfix.zip (and made the correct changes for Verizon)
As I said, the phone was 100% functioning at this point for several days. The problem that came up happened out of nowhere, no changes were made to the phone whatsoever, not even a random app was installed from the market.
The only apps I have installed are
Wifi Tether (Rooted Users)
ES File Explorer
Facebook
GMail
Craigslist
Facebook Contact Sync
NFL Scoreboard
QR Droid
SuperUser
Rom Toolbox
Rom Manager
Terminal Emulator
Other than that, it's just what ICS & GApps Installed.
So here's the problem - whenever I recieve a text from anyone now, if it comes in multiple texts (ie 1/2, 2/2/ etc) it shows up as all special characters when I recieve it.
Here is the last one I got, I sent it from another phone on the same carrier - I just typed myself a message until I was sure it would be a 2 part message and this is what came through on my Epic

I put it in a hex/text converter and the text version came up all "?'s" so I'm pretty much at a loss at this point.
I apologize for a long winded message, but I wanted to include as much information about my phone, etc as possible to get the best answer I could.
Again, thank you all and if anyone has any insight to what might be causing this, I would greatly appreciate the info.
Oh, and in case I didn't make it clear - at this moment, text works fine (if its only 1 text at a time incoming) I can send multiple page texts & the recipient gets them no problem, and I can send/recieve pictures, etc as mms with no problems...the problem only exists if it's multiple pages of text coming in at once.
Thanks
What happens if you use a 3rd party messaging app like handcent?

I just tried a few diff versions of Handcent, with the settings Default, then again with the settings on "Default SMS/MMS App (Disables Stock & Other Messaging Apps) and got the same results...
The wierd character code that comes through is exactly the same, both with the stock app & handcent in case that might be a question...
**Update**
I have Google Voice number sending voicemail converted as text to my phone on a secondary number. I got one today, was 3 pages SMS and it came through perfectly, right after that, I got a reg text from someone elses phone that was 2 pages, and it was the same type characters, and a few more since that were all the same special characters.
I've tested the Google Voice translation a few more times, and it comes through perfectly. I also tested just sending a multi-page text to my google voice number, which just forwarded the texts to my phone via SMS and they also come through perfectly.
So SMS from Google Voice in multiple texts works great, but from another phone do not.
If anyone has seen anything like this, I would love to know I'm not alone.
I'm having this exact same problem too. I noticed multiple texts incoming from certain people are fine, but when I receive multiple texts from a few others or a group sms from an iphone I get this really wonky characters. Any help would be appreciated. I am using this phone through pageplus.

[Q] Are there any other apps like GoSMS that do group messaging?

So I'm currently using GoSMS for group messaging and it actually works pretty well for grouping up messages if I was messaged as part of a group. It uses MMS to in order to make this function possible
The problem is that performance suffers tremendously when I get several at a time. I remember driving one day when friends were texting back and forth about something and I had to stop the car because my phone was completely stuck on just managing the text messages. GPS or any other apps would not run properly during the texts
Hoping there is an alternative even if it is paid

MMS Message size Limit

Is there any way to increase this? I am on sprint and when sending a MMS of any kind it shirts the photo so mall you either can't see the whole thing or it looks so bad you can't see details in it. I have never had this issue before on any sprint phone but I have also been rooted in majority if my phone's

I've note 7 and I'm having same problem. Two people (one has iPhone other Samsung) have sent me screenshots. It's really bad...only 1 out of 9 pics are received in viewable condition. Is there a setting on Note 7 that can be adjusted?
I hardly use SMS or MMS. I use whatsapp and signal and Google just came out with allo. All are cross platform.
I know your going to say but everyone doesn't use whatsapp. I find that most people do. Another option is Facebook messenger. I usually find that my friends at least one of the these messengers. The thing I like about signal is that it's like imessage in that another person with signal can communicate with you via encryption like imessage or whatsapp, but if the other person doesn't have signal, it sends it as an SMS or MMS.
I also use whatsapp, In my country the sms and mms are becoming extinct

Google Messenger and MMS Picture Quality/Compression

Hey everyone,
I got my Pixel XL on Verizon and I am loving everything about it so far. The only thing I have a problem with are the pictures I receive via Google Messenger being compressed so much, that they appear grainy. I was having the same problem on my Verizon Note 4 ever since it was updated to Marshmallow earlier this year. I was hoping this problem would have been solved with a new phone and new software. The pictures come through fine on other text messaging apps though. People also receive great quality photos from me through Google Messenger.
Is anyone having a similar problem with Google Messenger MMS - or does anyone have any idea how to solve this? I've done a lot of research over the few months, but haven't really found a fix.
Thanks in advance for your help.

When you receive multiple pictures at once it compresses them and they lose quality. If they send them individually it doesn't compress
I was just wondering about this issue myself. Videos coming in as MMS are incredibly compressed and low quality. Images are also the same.
This only happens for texts though and not Hangouts.
That stinks. I don't know if you have Verizon, but have you tried the Verizon Messages app if you do? If works well for me.

Unfortunately this isn't the case for me. Whether it's one photo or several, they are all compressed the same. Only happens with Google Messenger and Hangouts. Any other text messaging app works great. I just like Google and want to stick with them
Same problem here. Picture quality is crap no matter if it's only one picture. With textra is no problem. To bad, because I like Google messenger.
If you want to send pictures use Hangouts or WhatsApp. Other messengers like those should work also. The problem is with the carriers.

This problem has been plaguing me for over a year, this is them most helpful information I have found. https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel...ottom-comments
From what I can tell, if Verizon doesn't recognize your phone (mine is on a custom rom) Verizon servers automatically compress incoming MMS to 30-40KB.
"Pixel is resizing the images much more than they should. Take a look at the google pixel product forum. There are many complaints about this.
Every other comment so far is wrong, it's not just due to MMS. Yes MMS compresses/resizes the images to get a smaller file size, but no carrier restricts the image size down to the 30-40KB that Pixel is receiving.
From what I can tell the phone isn't in the carriers MMS phone info database yet, so it doesn't know the phone's capabilities so it defaults to a really old, flip phone user agent that restricts incoming MMS images to 30-40KB.
I have seen other reports of brand new phones having the exact same issue.
So hopefully it's just a matter of time before the carriers fix this.
Edit: I almost forgot, to prove this is an MMS issue and not 'just the way MMS works', download Textra or Chomp and under MMS settings choose Legacy instead of System. I'm not sure what it does, but it forces some other MMS settings to be used and will allow you to receive much higher quality photos."
I finally got it to work better by using Textra and setting it to "legacy" MMS.
I know this is an older thread, but the issue is still present even now.
It is NOT a carrier issue. Samsung default SMS client is fine, the Google Messages compresses photos to the point of pixellation.
It is a Google Messages issue. If it was carrier then all SMS apps would do it.
I only use Google Message because of Android wear. Might just have to ditch it until its fixed.

"Hey Google" no longer reading latest text messages from Textra

Hi all, was working nicely for a long time.
Now it either just says "Something went wrong" or "There are no new messages."
I've spent multiple calls with Google tech support, nothing. Still same problem.
Pixel 3 XL, about 4 month old phone.
Would have used the default text app but I really use the scheduler function that Textra has, along with the 9-second delay.
Per Google tech support I also tried downloading another third-party app, like Pulse. Having same problem of not being able to read new text messages. It's one of the most important functions for me especially driving around, and being able to hear new messages & respond hands free!!
THANK YOU!

I know this isn't exactly the answer you're looking for, but you mentioned replying hands-free while driving. Android Auto has this functionality. You can listen to and respond to messages with just your voice. It even works with facebook messenger! I do 95% of my communicating through messenger, all that was really important to me. Anyways, hope this helped some.
