Question still roaming after turning it off - Google Pixel 6 Pro

Hi,
Recently I went on holidays to a country which is in my roaming travel zone, basically it means that I pay small amount of money for every day I either connect to internet or have a call. I didn't want to use it, the fee may be small, but it was 2 weeks and 2 phones (both identical p6p). I turned off roaming option. nothing, then I turned off mobile data, checked again, still nothing. we were told by the helpdesk consultant that something is connecting with internet anyway, they can see it, they just cannot say what is it because of privacy reasons they do not know.
what was on - location for sure, every time we got money from the atm we got notified, once someone wanted to call me and I rejected the call, we also got 3 notification about spam calls moved directly to a spam folder. I cannot think of anything else.
can you help me? I have no idea what happened there, I never downloaded anything, we both think of us as rather cautious people so even though I cannot exclude the virus, it would be rather something else

lost evo. anyway of finding it?

Somehow I managed to lose my evo and its nowhere to be found. Its fully rooted running dc 3.2.3. Is there any way of locating it or remoty turning on gps? I don't have any special software for that type of stuff. any help is appreciated
sprint used to have the family locator thing where all the lines on your account could be located by their gps signal. dunno if they still have it or not, i haven't used it in a while.
I tried that but gps needs to be turned on. Is there a way to remotely turn on gps?
Any chance sprint might be able to help? the phone seems to be on, no one has made any calls with it or otherwise used it so I'm pretty sure it's somewhere where I can find it. I wonder if Sprint will (I say will because I'm pretty sure they can) try to find the phone via their cell towers or at least an approximate location.
i know windows mobile had software that could turn on gps and reply back to your other phone via sms its gps coordination... but the software had to be built into the rom so its not uninstallable.
ive been wondering if theres an app or similar for android.
just in case someone swipes my phone i'd like to be able to track it.
would be nice if a dev had this feature built into a rom so noone can disable or remove it.
Sprint could help but won't (I have tried). Family locator needs sms verification with user of phone before it will activate. Unless you had installed an app to track it you don't have any options. Look on craigslist or ebay.
Next time use "wheres my droid" or some other such software. Unfortunately google thinks that having an app switch on gps is a privacy issue so they disabled that api in 2.x, so you are really out of luck even if you had software.
I have quick sshd installed on mine so hopefully will be able to remote in and run ase, delete files, etc.
Sprint Family Locator will work. It doesn't require user authorization and it does not require the phone to have GPS turned on. Try it. The only thing it will do is send the phone a message saying that SFL has been activated (or the phone has been located via SFL).
Finally got family locator to find my phone but it's giving me a 0.5 mile radius by some apartments complexes that i didn't go to yesterday. I lost it somewhere by a lake and I guess someone's found it and taken it home. I'm hoping they'll turn on the GPS antenna so I can get a more precise location.
Edit: I was under the impression that GPS needs to be turned on because CC told me it does. When i started the service it wasn't working properly and locating my phone so I really thought that GPS needs to be on. I tried it out on some other phones on my account today and it wasn't locating any of them so i called CC and they did some things over there and locator started working. I probably could have found it yesterday if locator worked properly.

glad to see you've found your phone...lolz.
half mile radius doesn't really qualify as finding it

That sucks man. Did you have a password on it?
I have three apps for this sort of thing:
The previously suggested "Wheres My Droid". If you lose your phone, you can send an SMS to it with a custom phrase that will turn on the sound to ring for up to 5 minutes.
Lookout Mobile. A combo of GPS location, antivirus and contact/picture backup. You can log in through the website to locate.
Mobile Security. The best, IMO. Log into the website and it will locate the phone with options to lock, send a text, send a sound alarm. Key feature: If you are rooted, you can flash the app to your system of your phone, which means it won't appear in your app drawer and can't be uninstalled...its invisible unless a thief has the expertise to pull it off the phone with ADB. Was able to successfully pinpoint the address the phone is currently at.
In conjunction with these, you might want to download 'Protector'. This is basically an app that password protects certain apps/functions to your liking. I use it to require access to the market (so apps like lookout cant be uninstalled), system apps (like astro or estrongs...same idea) and sensitive $ data like Mint.com and Paypal apps.
I like redundancy on issues like this so thats why I have all three apps going. Also, always leave your GPS on. There is no battery drain issue unless an app is actually utilizing it, and that will be obvious because the GPS logo will appear in the notification bar next to the 3g/CDMA/Power icons.
You can make your phone pretty useless to anyone who isn't you by using the above ideas.
Pintail is always the first app i install, just text Locate and a pin number and it will send you the address of where its at. Coordinates would be nicer though.

Wow they must have changed that policy then. I had lost a treo 600 back in the day and they told me it needed to activate it with a code sent to the handset. Good to know they changed that and I apologize for being inaccurate.
Family locator works on phones without gps by using tower triangulation. But as you see it isn't all that accurate.
Good luck!
* I use ' tasker' to listen for sms and it will send sms back with location and ip. I can then ssh into phone and do various things there.

Just another thought. If you have a bluetooth headset you could wander around there and see where it connects. 10 meters?
sorry to hear of your misfortune.
yes.. only way to work.. is to have an app that helps you loaded before you loose it.
Half mile radius, sounds like tower triangulation to me. NOT GPS.
This is a warning to all.. spend a little time to find an app you like to do this ASAP. you will feel better.
there are few in the Market. I use Wavesecure.
these apps use Text messages to activate functions on your phone. Can give you a lot of control over the phone.
1. Checkout Craigslist or Ebay to see if your phone is listed.
2. If you can not find it online. Then tell sprint it is lost.. so it will be turned off so they can not use it or sell it.
3. I hope you have insurance that covers loss.

that is a good idea.. but battery on evo will not last long...it might be dead by now or very soon.
Seriously, drop everything and invest into some sort of software and set it up properly so you won't be in a ****ty situation like this. Now I gotta go hunting on ebay/craigslist and drop another $400... FML.
another $400? This is why people should buy insurance. at the most it is $100.
FYI depending on how long you have had the line open, you can still add insurance to the phone within 30 days I believe. Most likely wont help you but you never know.

[Q] about verizon roaming message

Quick question,
I have had my phone rooted for several months now. Ever since I rooted though, I always got the "Verizon wireless can not authenticate your phone" message when roaming. This has not been a big deal until now.
I have already spent a lot of time with sprint support on the phone and at the store, and they actually are just giving me a new phone, so the problem is solved.
MY actual question is, are people still having this issue happen when they root their newer phones? I ask because I would like to root my new phone, but not sure if I want to chance it messing up my roaming again.
Yea, it happens, but you don't need a new phone as the fix is really easy.
Call Sprint support and have them reset your profile on their server. They will put you on hold for a minute while they do that. Then they will have you remove your battery for one minute (the tech gal I had actually timed it and told me when to put the battery back in). Then you will be good to go.
Note-I don't know why this is, but it took me about 15 minutes talking to convince the tech support gal to do it, but once she did it roaming works fine again.
You can download the "Roam Control" app from the market, which allows you to force roaming to check if it works, paid app, but it is cheap. I just told the tech support girl that their was a spot in my house behind a metal shed that I get roaming when I checked it (important because she wasn't willing to do anything unless I was currently in a roaming area, and I didn't think it was prudent to tell here I was using Roam control).
Well, they gave me a new MSID witch did not fix the issue. After about another 45 minutes of trying things, she transfered me to account services and they said that they would just replace the phone.
I do not roam very often at all, so I said okay.
I saved my nandroid backups and everything for if I re-root. I just wasnt sure if this was an issue people were still getting with their new phones or not.

[Q] Sporadic Incoming Calls, My Phone Number Unknown...

Let me start this question with a big thanks to all the developers/etc. out there. The work being done is AMAZING!
I am a new "rooter", but learning fast. I am running Cyanoginger 1.1 on my MT3GS. I have noticed a few things that aren't quite right, and I am unsure if they are related to each other, or to Cm 6.1.1, or ~ginger 1.1, or...
1. Incoming phone calls seem to sporadically go to voicemail instead of the phone. My phone can be sitting on my desk with full bars, I'll call my phone from my desk, it'll ring once or twice and jump to voicemail (nothing shows up on the MyTouch). I'll call again 10 seconds later, and it goes to my phone. Very sporadic (maybe 1 in 20 calls?)
2. My phone number shows Unknown in Settings > About phone > Status. I read in a few forums that this may be the case untill you place/receive a call, but mine is still showing unknown.
3. My market purchases are no longer integrated with carrier billing. It's asking for a credit card instead of automatically billing me at T-Mobile.
Like I said, I'm a noob at rooting/modding, but I learn quick Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated!

The unknown number thing has to do with cm6.1.1. It shouldn't affect you anyway. For the first issue, probably t-mobile issue, neither your phone nor your ROM. Happens to me on all my phones, even my dumbphones.
The market thing is something that you give up when you flash a custom ROM. I think there might be something that can tie market to your tmobile account, but I can't find it again, it was mentioned in a thread recently.
Thanks for the quick response!
On points 2 and 3, I guess that's just the way it is. Little things, I can definitely deal.
On the first point, I just want to make sure this isn't happening because of how I flashed new roms, or how I upgraded the radio, etc.
FWIW, here's the process I used:
- rooted phone with adb/file copy, etc., etc.
- booted to ESPRIMG.zip (oops, rebooted, no backup of system!)
- booted to Clockwork
- cleared data, cleared cache, flashed CM 6.1.1, flashed gapps, rebooted
- went back to clockwork flashed radio from 7.07.(????) directly to 7.09.35.10, rebooted
- "stumbled" across Cyanoginger 1.1...
- booted to Clockwork, cleared data, cleared cache, flashed to Cyanoginger 1.1
The phone prior to rooting never had any issues receiving calls, but who knows, maybe it's because I'm staring at it, maybe it's solar flares, maybe I've angered the cell phone gods...ok, humor's "off" a bit today
If you have any further thoughts, let me know; otherwise thanks for your help! I really appreciate it!
Yeah that all sounds right. I haven't ever had issues with my phone number showing up, it seems to only happen to some people, and like you said, normally it goes away after placing or receiving a call. Who knows. I don't think it affects any apps though. I could be wrong about that, not sure. It might be your sim card, which would explain some calls not going through as well.
I know there is a way to tie the market to your t-mobile account, I just can't remember at the moment. I googled around, couldn't find anything. I think it's called market fix or something rather. I could be thinking of something else though. Frankly I like paying with my debit card better, it was never a huge deal for me, so I never thought too much into it.

I know exactly what you're talking about... I just can't seem to find it either. It was in a thread recently, like you said.
Maybe it's just vanished
I'm gonna keep searching though.
EDIT: So I was starting to flip out, cause I could not for the life of me find the thread...
But I decided to go to my phone and see if maybe I could just find the app in the market. Then I saw that I had already searched for it before, because I actually have the same issue. I just never downloaded it and tested it out.
It's called "Market Enabler"
I'm going to download it now and test it myself.
EDIT 2: Or maybe that's not it. I don't know, I can't seem to figure it out. Maybe MusicMan can take a look? I could have sworn this was an app suggested for that, but it just looks like it makes it so you can see apps that aren't on certain carriers.

Well, I "stumbled" across the solution to #2. As far as I've heard from others so far, it's purely cosmetic, but...
Go to Settings > Call Settings > Additional Settings > My phone number and enter the number. Now when you go to Settings > About phone > Status it will show the number you entered.
Again, this may be purely cosmetic, and I've noticed if you reboot, the setting gets wiped. Strange...but there you go...
Sorry to bring up this issue back up but I just recently Rooted my phone as well and am having the same problem with sporadic calls not coming to my phone.
For example, last night my father told me that he tried to call me at least 3 times in a row and it would go straight to voicemail, however today he called me (like 2 mins ago) and the phone rang as normal. Heres what I've noticed on the phone:
-the phone will drop all bars sporadically for no apparent reason, as I have never had any service issues in my house.
-it does this when its been idle for a couple of minutes and as soon as I wake it up it will show 0 bars then jump to the normal 2-3 I usually get at my place.
-whenever the bars drop to 0 my 3g/HSPA service will still show as normal
I'm not completely new to Rooting (Rooted my original G1), however my last experience with it was back on CM4.1 on my G1, so there may be a o couple of things I missed
Thanks in advance for any help!
Hi, I've a similar problem: on outgoing calls anyone on any phone is able to see my number, they always get calls from "unknown" from my phone. I use wolfbreak's rom with cyanogen and I've allready set in the settings the option to show my number on outgoing calls, but doesn't work. how can I do?

[Q] htc evo rooted, no data access

Over the past 2 weeks, I have tried to research the answers to my questions, but could barely find anything on this particular subject. So it's my first time posting to this forum, and my situation is a little embarrassing. I have had my htc evo for about 1 1/2 years, and I finally decided to root it 2 weeks ago. I've been with sprint for 6 years, and am on the unlimited data family plan, as well as the sprint hotspot feature on my phone, which I pay them 30 dollars additionally every month. I pretty much exclusively use my phone for all tasks and browsing and downloading etc, so I didn't get this feature for the "wireless tethering" , I actually got it so I could discontinue my home wireless internet through cox communications, so my phone is my only wifi source at home. I almost never use an actual pc!
I rooted my evo for 2 reasons mainly: 1) I am sort of an app addict, and I needed to free some space on my phone. I especially love using different keyboards ( which are often very large files). 2) I love customizing my home screens, but want to be able to use icons from icon packs such as crazy home's, with ADW launcher etc. I did a factory data reset on my phone before rooting, and I think I backed up all my apps to my laptop... but I wanted to start fresh anyway, so have not bothered to restore them from my pc to my phone.
Two days before I rooted my phone, Sprint temporarily disconnected my account do to Past due payment. I'm not going to get into the details, But I can't afford to pay off my balance until May. It is what it is, I'm not whining or complaining, times are a little tough for me financially and i just have to deal with not being able to make calls or text for a month. Lol, it's harder than I thought! It's pathetic how dependent my family has become on cell phones and texting for communication. We don't even have a land line. Just to give you a quick background, I didn't even know what sd card was, or a usb cable, before I got my htc evo. I'm not tech savvy at all, But when I first learned what this phone could do I was hooked. I have a laptop at home, But I never use it because a few keys on the keyboard are broken. As a matter of fact, The first time I actually plugged my phone into my pc, was when I rooted it!. I used the unrevoked 3 method, which was fairly straightforward. Because I have no data access right now, I was unable to update my profile etc. And of course, without data access I cannot take advantage of the free wireless tether.
My main question is, did I make a mistake in rooting my phone while not having network access? Right now, if I'm not in a wifi area I basically can't do much with my phone. I downloaded a few apps that allow free calling over a wireless connection, and facebook chat,etc... so I can communicate with my family as long as I'm in a wifi zone. But, I have been afraid to do anything else with my phone because I wanted to do a little research on this. I know some of you are probably thinking, why didn't she research it before she rooted? Lol, I would be saying the same thing! I didn't even think about it until I was done routing and it told me to update my profile. Since then I've been a little freaked. I'm hoping I didn't Make a bad choice. I just wanted to the able to access a few icon packs lol.
Is there anything I should know, or have done differently? Or does it make no difference at all? I guess basically what I'm getting at, is can I go ahead and reset my phone again and start flashing roms, just like I would if I had network access?
Again, please forgive me if I sound ignorant in this matter... because I am. Any advice will be much appreciated.
You can start flashing roms as normal. You didn't make a bad choice rooting without data access, because whether you do or don't doesn't make a different. i would say just make a back up of your apps in titanium backup, then backup your rom before flashing.
And you can pm me if you need any help.
Post neglected...double post.
I would say to reflash ur rom but it might not work try to go back to the sense rom if u have it backed up once u do that update everything under ur settings nd updates nd if it still don't work the only other thing I know u can do is unroot it and take it to.sprint so thay can look it

Not being able to update the profile won't make any difference at all, if you have no data connection to begin with. Once you're able to get things situated, and you need to get your phone activated again, you'll just need to make sure you're on a Sense rom before you activate it again. No worries, you can flash away all you want, with or without a data connection.
Also, how have you had your Evo for 1 1/2 years!? They were released June 4th last year!
Ha ha really? I feel like I've had this evo for years.. since the day I got it I've been like a kid in a candy store! Thanks for the reassurance everyone. Unfortunately, I've just encountered the problem with the SD card not being recognized by my phone or my PC. According to my research, I'm supposed to find this file on my SD card under android. secure and delete it? But my PC isn't recognizing my card, and my apps that are on SD are seen by my phone. I get a force close when attempting to unmount SD. My market apps won't install or uninstall.... ugh. Like an idiot,I never did a Nandroid backup. I really don't care about losing my app backups though,I just don't want to mess up my phone. All this information is overwhelming me... Nandroid this, titanium that, recovery boot, drivers, and on and on.... so much advice is outdated I don't know which to follow. I'm a dummy! That's why I need my smartphone to help me out lol.... how do I fix this?
Eek....I just saw a gigantic spider.... creepy..
in a nutshell, you can do anything with your phone, without data access, or service.
I rooted and flashed the ROM I did for my old Moment, after it had been turned off so I could sell it.
Now that you are rooted, I uses Titanium backup for all my apps/data. I only backup actually apps, not HTC stuff, etc, or anything that comes with the ROM you flash.
You can tell this becasue the apps are in white lettering in the Backup menu.
At least they are on mine, and I use all default settings.
rooted without data access
Thanks everyone...I fixed my problem with my sd card, turns out mine had gotten corrupted so I will deal with that later.I just put in my other card and Im back in business....lost all my personal info though. Thats the least of my worries. Someone said I can do anything on my phone without data service, but they must mean only when I am in Wifi zone right ? See, unfortunately, I dont live in a populated area. I have no wifi access at home and there are hardly any free wifi spots in town. At home, I can see that there are wifi networks around (linkys via cox communications), but they are locked. Oh, thats another question i had....why do people lock their wifi? I never did, and I have no problem letting others access mine when they need it. Should I? If so, why?I am so sorry if I sound clueless again, but Im learning a little more every day thanks to people like you!
So as far as communication, Im out of luck. A couple months ago,I had an issue connecting to the network while i was at home, but i just turned on my sprint hotspot and i had instant network access so i couldnt call or text, but i was able to get a hold of my daughter on facebook lol. How did my phone do that? I dont get it. I am going to a couple of those prepaid phones tomorrow so we can make calls in the meantime.
As far as navigation, any tips on how to find any apps that dont need network access that work well? I found a couple, but they seem so complicated to set up. And, I tried Nettalk for making calls over wifi but it only works sometimes. I read about apps that offer free sms and calls over wifi but I couldnt find one that was stable.
I cant wait to get my service restored..I didnt realize how much I depended on it. I still havent flashed any ROMS...Im a little nervous. I still dont totally understand what is different about my evo now tthat its rooted, but i plan to educate myself once I get full access to wifi again.
Any advice/tips is very much appreciated. Thanks again for this useful forum.

What would you do?

Ok guys, been a long battle. I spent a combined four and a half hours on the phone with sprint yesterday morning. We did soft resets, hard resets. We checked ESN and other numbers I didn't know existed. We checked towers as well.
And after all this, I still have issues making calls. When I go to make a call at home, it automatically disconnects even though I have full bars and my data is working. I also cannot receive calls, as everyone texts me saying that it is going straight to voice mail. I only really go three places.(work, home, gf's place) The problem occurs at both my place and work. However, it doesn't seem to happen when I am on the road, and it only happens sometimes at my gf's.
I took the phone to Sprint with a ticket number given to me by a second tier manager? The sprint store rebooted my phone a few times, tried to make a few calls. Of course it works. So their rule is, if they cannot replicate the problem, they cannot help.
So I guess I am asking what you guys would do. The only two option I see are:
1. Buy a used EVO and finish out my contract(14months) hoping nothing goes wrong with it.
2. Take the early penalty, close my account and go to Verizon like the rest of my friends whose GPS's and calling "just work".
I would hate to leave sprint cause they have the best unlimited deal out there. But this is the second "top of the line" phone I have bought with them that has been a disaster. And both of them seemed to work flawlessly for the first couple months I had them.
By the way, I am on stock EC05, and I have been ever since it EC05 came out. I am not rooted or anything. It was working fine till about Friday.
Do you have TEP?
Wow, try taking out the sd card and use the phone to make a call. SD cards can make the phone do some funky things. If that works; then put it back in, connect the phone to your computer, copy all the contents to your computer; format the sd card and copy the contents back to the sd card.
change to sprint only network (settings - wireless networks - mobile networks - system select .. choose sprint only)
uninstall app 3rd party applications; perhaps something running is the culprit
If still no joy; I would root it and try a custom ROM. Maybe a file got corrupted at some point and that is causing the disconnections.
I really like the one I am on, its worked beautifully.
I'd be happy to help you through the root process if it gets to that point.
Good luck
It doesn't matter whether I have it or not, they rebooted the phone, brought up the dialer, made one call(he might have made two, one of the other people was talking to me) and sent me on my way. If they can't replicate the problem, then their policy is to not do anything. I even asked them if I could make a video of it first hand when I get home, and they basically said that won't change anything cause they have to be able to replicate the problem first hand.

I will try SD card when I get home. I don't have any third party apps, as the technician on the phone hard reset my phone like 3 times. I tried every custom rom, and I even tried to go back to DI18. All of them had the same problem, so I am guessing it is hardware related. Again, data is working correctly, just seems to be something with the calling hardware.

If you have TEP - don't even bother with taking to the store any longer. Just complain enough over the phone and you should be able to get someone to send you a new one.

Unfortunately I cannot really wait for them to send me a phone. I need to get something today, as this phone is also my work phone. Customers do not like going straight to my voicemail :/
After a tech on the phone with Sprint screwed my phone up even worse, had me stuck in an activation loop. He told me to bring it to a Sprint store. Well this was at night so I Odin'd to stock DI18 and let it do the OTA and that cleared up the loop. It may work for you and save you grief.
Do you BONSAI?
DDTM is not on is it??

I've heard of similar things. I helped someone troubleshoot the problem and came up with it had to be the tower. They called again to customer service and of course they said that nothing is wrong with the tower. I think that they called again to make a report to check out the tower near their house. They did that a few times. I don't know how long it took to fix the situation. I do notice lately that, even though signal strength was okay before, it's better now.
If you have another sprint phone, if you activate it, does it do the same thing? This might be one of those instances that if you complain enough, maybe they might give you one of those devices they have (I forgot what it's called) that you hook up to your home internet and it acts like a mini tower at home. I've heard of stories that after enough complaining enough, they'll just give you one. If the phone still does it then it's the phone that's flaky.
When you talk to someone, make it clear you use this phone for work and if people can't reach you, you will lose clients. If you start losing clients because of this then you will be forced to go to another carrier. If they say you'll have to pay etf then tell them you won't because it isn't your fault that you can't make or receive calls at work and home.
This phone or their equipment or service isn't working properly and you're losing customers because of this.
Here's another idea. Find someone else that has sprint. Have them go by your work and home and see if they can send or receive calls. If they can then its your phone, if they can't then it's the towers.
