Quick yes or no Question. - Hero, G2 Touch Android Development

Hello everyone. I'm thinking on buying HTC magic, i've been reading a bit about the Hacking to run new roms. My only objective was to run apps, or unoficial apps. Do i need to hack the HTC in order to run them ? I couldnt find awser of this question i hope someone can help Thank you,
Regards

A) Your question really doesn't make sense.
B) This is the HTC Hero forums, not the HTC Sapphire (Magic) forums.

well first of all, you posted in the hero section.
about your questions, hacking is too much of a big word. better say rooting.
depends on the applications you want to install. majority of them you wont need to root your phone for them to run. there is an option to enable 3rd party applications in the menu itself. however, some applications do require rooting of the phone, for example wifi teetering, bluetooth sharing...

oh sorry i made mistake :\ but i think it would be the same.
i'll try formulate. I wish to download a pack of apps from the internet. I do not know if they are signed or not (not even know if android has that protection as windows mobile has ) . My question was if i can install those apps on the android oficial OS from HTC.
I Hope it was better formulated the question. Thanks again!

For example. i'm downloading this collection of apps: h**p://isohunt.com/torrent_details/148986681/android?tab=summary
Will i need to root or it isnt necessary? What kind of apps need rooting? Or this kind i do not have to worry about.
Thanks =)

from the list you quoted, you dont have to root your phone for the vast majority of them. rooting is required to access proteccted files of the system from your phone

alright excelent. Thank you for your kind help =) I was becoming interested on the iphone but after i saw android, kind of blocked my eyes. the system is great hehe. Thank you again =)

But downloading pirated apps is a good way to get your phone blacklisted & banned from the Android Market.

Hi,
Sorry to be such a noob but what are the advantages of rooting?
And if I was thinking of doing it, why would I?
Sorry again ... I am a newbie
@Raminder1992
Plenty of advantages to root but in order to understand them and the whole process you need to search the forums with reference to other handsets to give you an idea, if we answer your questions it only leads to more new members posting basic questions in what is a development forum that currently is hanging on what happens next with the desire rooting process.
In other words click the search button and take some time to read or you'll just annoy those of us that desperate for progress on this handset.

Simple:
root=administrative rights to the system........ basically the same thing in your computer when you have administrative account...
normal mode is like a normal windows user account where you have possibility to (un)install software but you cannot change the system
So the final piece in the puzzle is about to be delivered. I'm buying it!

there are many, many reasons, but to give a few examples. firstly, those of us not in regions where google allow us to access the paid apps, we can change that by a few parameter settings, we can also change where we're from, if a developer wanted to block out our region, for whatever reason. after that, when you look even further, there are plenty of apps on the market that require root to work properly, there's one that allows you specify what apps launch on startup, there's a firewall that allows you control what connects through your data plan, there's a flashlight that keeps your camera flash on and many, many more. without root, these things don't work properly, because they don't have the right permissions.
for me, the reasons above are good, but not the main reason. for me, where I work, we use a LEAP wireless security system that (I think) all Android devices can connect to, without a problem. unfortunately though, the Android developers haven't added that option to the wireless config GUI. this isn't a problem if I get root, because then I can just edit the config file and change one line. without root, though, I don't have wireless connection during a good part of every day, which sucks.

Total noob question

Hey guys sorry to be a total noob but we all have to start somewhere. I have preordered the evo from RS and this will be my first smart phone. I really have no exp with aps or what these phones can do.
I guess what I am wondering is what is rooting and why is it useful.
Thanks again in advance. I apologize for my ignorance on this topic.

Rooting is basically hacking your phone.
It is useful to get super admin permission. Allow's you to customize your phone more and remove carrier app that you may not want. There is alot more stuff but I am new myself to Android.
Basically it's useful for removing crapware. It's kind of like when you buy a Dell computer and it comes with useless programs that may be really good but you find no use for. You can also edit things such as wallpapers and enable hidden menu options for features.
Rooting gives you literally UNLIMITED access to the software operating system on the computer.
When compared to a Windows computer think of your default phone as a Guest account. You can generally use everything but anything important can't be deleted or modified, which also prevents you from pretty much modifying anything at all.
Once you gain Root you're on the Administrators account, you can edit anything you want, move, delete, & in general do whatever you'd like with the device. Sometimes this can introduce risk to unexperienced users -- Think about what would happen if you deleted your entire sys32 folder on Windows...you'd break something.
That is the best explaination of rooting that I have read...thank you! Very simple to understand when put into the Guest/Admin scenario.
thanks ohwut that really puts it in perspective !
you also get wifi tethering and can overclock

Rooting?

Could anyone point me to the correct tutorial to root your HTC Touch Pro 2 ?
I'v been reading up on the android builds past few days. I'm totally new to this.
I got android to work with the project android build. And i want to use Whatsapp.
But it won't let me open Whatsapp. 3rd party task manager is killing it. So i guess its ATK ? But i can't just uninstall it trough settings>applications etc. Same trough android market. I read somewhere you'd have to root it then. But i don't know how. Any help would be appreciated alot !!!.
If i'm not suppose to post this, because i haven't looked or w/e, fine delete this. But i did look. And if been reading alot of topics and iv seen alot of flaming just because of asking a question. might have been a stupid one, but still, people just want some help. Why not help out ? We all start somewhere. And im starting right here. haha.
Oh and if im totally off map by saying rooting, let me know how i can get whatsapp to work. Iv seen it works for others so im just waiting to fix mine. haha.
Anyway, great job on the forum and great builds for TP2.
Peace,

im not using the XDandroid build, im using the project android build. And i read somewhere in order for whatsapp to be working you need to get rid of ATK by rooting your phone and then get rid of the app (ATK). So, some are saying it should be rooted. And it's not like no one is running whatsapp on a HTC android mod. it should be working. but i can't seem to get rid of ATK. iv read other could just get rid of it trough settings>applications but i can only delete the updates. Hey,
first of all welcome to the xda-developers forum...
like u and i guess everyone i hate answers like some of the ones you got..
i think a froum is made to ask questiuons however that might be about...
and it took me month back in my old htc kaiser days to get the whole android thing.
so when you want to install apps that are not from the store then u have to check one checkbox first.
ull find it under settings->applications-> and there should be a checkbox that says unsigned apps or untrusted apps...something like that.
normally this page should pop up if u click on a app that u have on the sd card...
i hope that is what u asked for...
and the phone is already rooted whatever build u are using
and if u have any questions but dont want to ask them in the forum cuz u might think that u get answers that dont suit ure question just pm me

Your right, i don't know, that's why im asking... smh at the ignorance at this forum.
hey,
ok now i got what ure asking...
so then it is important what method u are using? do you have a system.ext2 file that you load with haret?
or do you have a partioned sd card with the android system on a ext2 partition.
when you have the whole system in a system.ext2 file you would need to unpack it, delete the .apk of the app, and then pack it into a .ext2 file again...
when you have the second method that just browse into the folder system/apps/ and delete the file...
that should work for every normal app but it is not easy to do it...

Well you certainly answered my questions with a confidence only stupidity can be responsible for.
FYI, there's a difference between ignorance & stupidity. Ignorant people just don't know. Stupid people know, but are willingly ignorant. You have all the information available to, yet you insist on being ignorant.
It's OK to ask questions - but if it has been answered before, answering the same questions over and over again gets old. So some of us will respond a little less amicably than others - 9 times out of 10, this was because the OP didn't do their due diligence.

I just sent you a pm. i don't load anything, i start winmo, open up, project android, hit boot, android starts... that's all i do. i don't have a system.ext2 file on my sd. if this method is "wrong" or dated, let me know where to get the newest build. seems like that is the problem ?
hm...so you have to have some files that are behind that...
and i would think that you have a system.ext2 file somewhere...
should be in the andboot folder on your sd card.
but in builds that are used now here that task manager you want to get rid of isnt used anymore...so i would suggest just try the xdandroid build and kernels or the neopeek version which is very fast and you have all files on a spare partition on your sd card.
if you want to get started with the neopeek build just check neopeek.com and then the forum. there are all the build he has developed and instructions how to install. if u have any questions about that just let me know...
i guess art your point it would be the easiest to switch to another build

I guess if your whole issue is ATK, then just use a newer build. I don't think ATK has been included in any of the 2.2 builds, but it hasn't been in a build for a while. So I'm guessing your build is old if you still have ATK on there.

its a double-edged sword this kinda thing, because its easy for both sides it is just tedious and requires an abnormal amount of patience which some of us (like myself) have little of to begin with
also there are times, like this, that a noob cant simply be pointed in the right direction
all that said i agree with nick, just use xdandroid for tp2 especially since that is what the people around here are most accustomed to
So I am new with the Android world.
I got Blazn up and running, but that's all where I am at lol.
So i see all those extra information that I am not knowledgeable about (not ignorant so people don't start flaming) , so I am going to call myself a NOOB when it comes to Android and learning bit by bit everyday.
So long story short, You guys got WhatsApp up and running properly?
Because I heard back in the 2.1 eclair , WhatsApp was not working correctly.
If working, what alterations have you guys done to make it run (if any needed).

[Q] Sideloading Apps

Are there any?
Windows Phone 7 is already open to homebrew applications.
The chevron tool unlocks the device, but to anyone that isn't a developer there seems to be no point to this.
The question is are there any sideloading applications readily available for us non-developing members? Or should I, for now, leave my device locked.?
(And to all you Devs making Apps keep up the good work. And dont let excited people like me rush you )

Yes I have searched...
And the best i could find was infact the same information, that being that the chevron App unlocks it.
Thanks for the help...
So far the only really useful capability we've unlocked is the ability to do networking. Someone used that to make a webserver, which is cool, but the average user probably won't be too interested in it. We're still working on unlocking a lot of other things, though.
The best thing to do is to hop in, learn to program, and start coding yourself! With a weekend, you should be able to make something fairly basic and nice.

Noob to Android Help Please.

Hello Everyone.
I have just purchased a Sony Experia play for my sons Christmas present.
All I know is it is unlocked to any network and this is purchased from the UK.
What if anything are the 1st steps to enable emulation rom loading etc. on this phone. ??
I can`t find any tutorials on the 1st steps to take. Out of the box (Not even sure there are any)
Or is the phone good to go ….as it is with loading rom emulation etc.
There is no FAQ on this subject at all, and if there is?? I can`t find them.
Basically I would like my son to be able to acquire all the Good Stuff that this phone is capable of getting. E.g.: loading Roms. Iso, game files, emulation etc. etc. (like the psp, if this is even possible?)
Thank you for your time and any help.
Basically, you just have to install the emulator apps, load some roms into the sd card, do some quick configurations, and it's ready to go.
Gameboid, snesoid, n64oid, fpse are the most popular ones. You'll have to map the buttons to the gamepad first though. GBA emulators require a gba bios file. Finding one for the emulator using google shouldn't be too difficult.
Google keeps removing emulators from the market, but you can get the "oid" ones from slideme. There's an app called "emulator roms plus" that will help you find emulators, roms, and it can also install a gba bios. Personally I use tiger gba, tiger snes and tiger genesis (by Tiger King) instead of the "oid" versions.
You can either download the apps with your computer, load them onto your sd, then install, or use the phone's internet browser and download directly from there.

No, most of the good stuff is available out of the box. You only need to root/unlock if you want to do technical things like overclock, edit system files, and install custom roms/kernels.

Flashing custom roms is legal, though you have to unlock your bootloader to do so and that might void your warranty as SE put's it. So if you mean by 'not legal' is the same as voiding your warranty, then yes.
As said in this thread it do most things out of the box and pretty good i might ad

Thanks Guy`s you have made it almost crystal for me now with the experia play options.
Really appreciate all your help and advice.
Thank You.
On an added note any general computer experience with emulators or file browsing and opening will help you work this emulator app's pretty fine
fpse and gameboid will need bios files if you need a hand finding them just reply here i'm sure more than enough people will help you
also in fpse once you have loaded the bios save the settings so as you don't have to load the bios everytime you open the emulator app.
other information including compatability with the emulator is over in the themes and apps thread!
Your son is going to love this phone, it's so pro!

Custom roms are custom software for your device, most custom roms are based on the offical sony software. But some like CM7 are built from source (AOSP).

"custom roms" when talking about bootloaders and such = custom Android installation
"roms" when talking about emulators = the games themselves
A lot of newbies seem to get confused by these terms being used in more than one context within a single thread.

Afaik it's not legal to share the bios file's, you'll have to google them yourself, but is easily found when doing so and wich ones to use for best results
Ohh and it's not allowed on xda to share, link or discuss warez and such
