Help with introduction to modifying android - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well I have pre-ordered an Evo and am jumping ship from my old friend WinMO and am finding it hard to find much info about the workings of android. Everything I read seems as though it is assumed that you know what everything is and what to do with it. I am no noob to the modifying and figuring things out but only having experience with windows os's with zero linux knowledge. I am not asking for in depth explanations, only for better info than what I am finding. All i seem to be able to turn up are basic explanations of terms used and guides to root but little else. Some specifics I would love to find info on is the function of the kernel and recovery images, simply usages of the adp and such and general info on rooting. Again all I turn up is info saying load this recovery and flash this kernel and your rooted blah blah but nothing specific just as to what I'm actually doing by following these instructions. Thanks in advance for any links you guys can provide to help a noob learn. *puts on flame suit just in case*

Im coming off wm 6.5 and Im new with android but I found something that you can read up

help flashing

Hello all,
I've done some searching around and am getting a little bewildered with what seems like contradictory advice/instructions so can someone please give me a shove in the right direction.......
I have a orange UK kaiser and want to flash it with the full featured rom which will allow the use of touch flo as it was designed. I dont know why orange crippled the device in the first place but hey ho.
I've noticed some ROM's floating about that also add messenger as well as other apps, this is all good but I have no idea on the process of flashing the device, and with some of the posts I've seen on here about radio's not working etc after flashing I thought I better just check with someone who does know.
So i just need maybe a link to a definitive thread/post on flashing this particular phone along with the tools needed.
Here's the details I get when booting the phone up.
R: 1.27.14.32
G: 22.45.88.07h
D: 1.81.00.00
Thanks in advance
Go to kaiser rom development and read the stickies and gweni

Cheers mate, will do

I am a rooting noob!

Hey, guys.. I'm a complete noob at the whole rooting procedure and just decided to jump on the bandwagon. I have come to realize that as of now you can't root 2.2 until someone figures it out. Other then that, I just have some basic questions... so, once you root your phone you can download "roms" on to your phone to use. What exactly are "roms" though? The main reason I want to root is so that I can get the REVOLUTION theme on to my phone...
Just want some questions answered so I understand what exactly I am doing. I find this stuff really interesting anyways, so I would love to learn what I am missing out on!
Thanks in advance.
ROMs are complete operating systems. They're rebuilt, repackaged, or otherwise tweaked versions of Froyo, Eclair, with or without Sense, etc.
Themes are just layers on top of existing apps and program elements.
But both require root.

Head over to the development section, there are guides in place that can answer those questions for you (you will have more lol). Make SURE you follow the one for full nand unlock. Just spent 5 frustrating hours trying to flash rom because I thought I was unlocked but wasn't. Do yourself a favor and read those guides!
Swyped from my HTC EVO

[Q] Im New to this where to start and what to do?

Hi People,
I have only just found out that you can change the ROM's and all sorts of thing with My HTC Desire.
I have had my phone for 2 weeks, I'm on Virgin Mobile and don't have a clue.
I was talking to a guy at work who has one and he told me about you guys.
I have had a look around but can't see anything for the noob...lol (ME!!!).
I was wondering is anyone could give me some advice on where to start, What to look out for and any general advice on what to do and what not to do?
Any Help would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks
BG Macster (Mark)
First thing is to ask yourself why you want to change the ROM on the unit. Are you running out of space or are you just the type who likes to have more control?
I didn't root for months as the phon, out the box, does exactly what I want it to do. The only reason I've rooted now is to run the HD ROM but otherwise I'd stay stock.
You're going to get people reply with 'root it now, don't ever think of going stock, bla bla bla' but it's an individual thing, as is the choice of ROM. Read up on the stickied threads in the various forums and use the search button a LOT!

Welcome Mark.
EddyOS has provided you some excellent advice - don't rush into anything.
Mostly people do this as a kind of 'hobby' (including me) and you can end up with some cool stuff on your phone that HTC never intended you to have or have much later on. On the flip side, you can also wreck your phone too through doing the wrong thing or just plain bad luck. HTC can be a bit difficult in fixing stuff under warranty if you've been mucking about with your device, so be warned.
Everything you need to know about rooting and flashing (conjures up interesting images doesn't it?) is contained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
So read up, lurk about a bit in the forums and if you think you need to - have a go.
Good luck!
Thanks Guys Some sound advice there i will look around before i do a thing.
Many Thanks
First thing I would do, though, is check the ROM currently running on your Desire and get the RUU* file in case you ever need to go back to stock after rooting. To check, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a note of the software version.
You can then go to this site and see if the version you're on at present is available. If it is, download it:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo
*RUU = ROM Upgrade Utility, official package from HTC to install a ROM

[REQ] noob flashing guide

I have never flashed a custom rom on an Android device before. i am interested in doing so and learning the process, as I am confident that given the correct guidance, it would be rather simple. However, I have been unable to find a single, comprehensive, noob-friendly guide for all the intricacies and subtleties associated with the process for the LG OG. And I mean detailed, like hold-my-hand-step-by-step noob friendly. If someone would be willing to take the time to compile such a thread, it would without question be sticky-worthy, and be an invaluable asset to both the forum members who are sick and tired of noobs asking uninformed questions, and for my fellow noobs who ask these questions. Best Regards.
No offense, but if you are a newbie, better let the phone as is. No one is born with the knowledge, but also no one will give this kind of informations to someone who don't master the ABC. All i can say is to read the FAQ's. Search and read around. If you want something well done,do it yourself. Think for yourself, try to understand the processes involved in flashing a custom rom. Don't learn by gestures. It's the only advice i can give you. You do realise if someone makes this tutorial(although there are some by now, just look for them) and you screw up something(because there is no 100% noob proof solution, something may go wrong even for "professionals"),you will blame that person. So,again, read and learn yourself. You have all the necessary infos here.
Fair enough. Ive rooted/ unlocked my phone, messed around with stock .kdz, etc but just looking on moving on to the next level.
