EVO 4g On Verizon - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm plan on getting a Evo on first day, but sprint coverage sucks in my area.Thats why I'm with Verizon.
I want to know can i run the Evo on Verizon network. Dont care bout 4G.I know it should work both cdma networks. but i want to be sure. And if so does it have to be rooted.
And forgive me if this question has been answered didn't see it on the Q&A.
Thanks

Yes the phone would work on the Verizon network from a technical standpoint. I am sure you will have issues getting Verizon to accept the esn though.
Why not just get a HTC Incredible? I know its got a smaller screen and a few other differences, but they are compatible on a few levels and a pretty good phone option. I just don't see the evo as worth the trouble.

Yes i understand. But i dont like the feel of the Incredible.I would rather hold on to my Droid Eris(rooted-thx xda). I really do want the 4.3in screen among other features. Did want a HD2 but its only GSM.
this may seem stupid but im thinking bout calling verizon and asking them about the esn stuff

I'm positive they'll just give you the run around that it needs to be fully tested, etc on their network.
Sometimes you can get them to activate it at little verizon "authorized" shops, but you have to pay more etc.
Once you get to that point, you will need to load a Verizon PRL, not sure what else after that.

Isnt the new Droid thats soon to come got the same 4.3 and 1080 cam? Might wanna just wait for that.

Thanks for the info. I just prefer HTC phones.I had six or more HTC phones since Cingular 2125. They didnt stop working i just buy a new phone every year almost.

um.. the Evo cannot and will not ever run on Verizon's network.... the only exception to this is if your roaming and Sprint uses VZW's towers.

boom baby

wont have a 1080p video recording camera if thats what u were referring too, sensors are to small, even the 14MP cellphone coming out only does 720p recording, but it probably has the same 8MP camera.

Why don't you just port to Sprint? You can roam on VZW's towers, and even if you have to pay an ETF, it will probably be cheaper than buying an evo outright or on ebay.

not sure..it is possible but you'd have to change the esn/meid to that of a verizon phone..mobile-files would have been the to go for that but they closed their website for some reason

EVO on Verizon
I would Love to see this, I have an EVO also, but just like the my TP2 I don't think this can easily be done.. I'm sure somebody somewhere has it done. though not the traditional way. somebody please show the way.

Why not stick with Sprint and still use VZW's towers?

TP2: Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, ... where to turn?

Wow - looks like everyone is about to come out with their version of the TP2. The question for me now is - who to sign up with? What are the pros & cons of CDMA vs GSM versions? I've read about bad customer support with Sprint. Who's got the better (stable, coverage, speed) network? Any incentive to go unlocked?
Thank you!
I'll be getting one w/ tmobile usa because of the plan prices, great support, and GSM any where in the world!!
im going with Verizon,, im a sales man, and i need a reliable network.. if i dont get any signal i will lose clients. so im going with the best network in the US. you want the best you have to pay for it.

Personally I never lose reception in the U.S but I guess it all depends, so that is a good reason to go with Verizon, but I am gonna get it for T-mobile cause of an existing contract, otehr wise I think I would want to get it for [email protected]
If you want a weakened and crippled phone with horrible customer service then Verizon is definitly the way to go.
If you want a Touch Pro2 that works worldwide, that can be unlocked to any network, then go with AT&T or T-Mobile. Personally, I would go with AT&T as they have a larger 3G coverage throughout the US.

I tend to agree, I am an ex- verizon guy and had to deal with the slow phone deliveries, dumb down hardware issues(Thank God for XDA) as well as the CDMA not in use with the majority of the rest of the world.
If you need world wide connectivity and the best US 3G, Att is your best bet, but to be honest who deploys first tends to win. I guess the race is on.
Price, world-wide connectivity, un-crippled phone features, and customer support all point to Sprint as the best choice for someone about to choose a carrier for the first time and wanting the TP2.
The reports you've read about Sprint's CS are BS. I've been with them for 3 years and have had many opportunities to work with customer support and have walked away from the experience satisfied and better off every time. They clearly have been and continue to work hard to turn around a bad customer service department, and it's paying off.
Also, in all that time I've not had a single dropped call, save for one area between me and my office that is a "dead zone" that no carrier apparently covers (I car pool and we all use different carriers. We all drop at the same place).
I vote for Sprint. Better data network than ATT and T-Mo combined plus i read that Sprint's version is going to be dual mode (CDMA/GSM 900/1800?).
So you get good CDMA coverage in the States and when abroad, pop in a SIM and use a local GSM network. Works for me that way.
First of all, the Sprint and Verizon versions ARE global. They are CDMA and GSM. Get it straight people.
I have been with Verizon since before they were Verizon, and I have had absolutely ZERO issues with customer service, billing, phone replacement, coverage, dropped calls, etc. That is also having lived in 2 different regions of the country in that time.
I agree, they're sometimes slow to release phones, and hopefully the TP2 crippling isn't reminiscent of the TP1, but we'll have to wait and see. It all comes down to the best network in your area. In mine, Verizon is hands down the best, followed by AT&T second, a tin can with a string 3rd, and Sprint 4th.

Yes, Sprint is CDMA, and the Touch Pro2 for Sprint and Verizon will be dual mode (CDMA/GSM).
im an existing tmo customer (very happy with their service) and am craving to get tp2, but willing to switch to at&t since my contract with tmo has expired and i might get a better price at at&t as a new customer
sprint .. eh .. not sure, maybe
would be great if someone could do an in depth side-by-side comparison of these companies, like prices, features, extras ..
for example, i found out that at at&t and sprint you get to listen to pandora for free, but not on tmo, also engadget figured that at&t has better 3G than others, stuff like that
in general, question stands - tmo, att or sprint?
well, the CDMA phones cannot use voice and Data at the same time. so that's a big deal.
coverage and network speed vary largely depending on area. and nobody knows what the phone will cost yet through any of the carriers.
good, something new, kinda rules out sprint

tmo hands down.... check billshrink.com to compare all four carriers (its not endorsed by any carriers by the way)
Hope this isn't a thread hijack.. what's the scoop on ROM support for CDMA versions of HTC phones? (I see the posts about TP2 being CDMA+GSM)
I've been here flashing ROMs for 8125/8525/8925, but always had a GSM version... and have really NOT noticed ROMs for the CDMA flavors of those phones..
Sprint appears to offer me the best price for a family plan with 2 data phones + messaging (~$130 vs. $170/month if I've got my info correctly), so I'm thinking heavily about dropping ATT after ~8 years... but wanted to be sure I wouldn't lose access to all the fantastic ROMs from XDA.

You didn't request anything you need help with.
Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T are not compatible with the Verizon CDMA phones so you won't be able to use your Verizon Incredible on their networks. AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM networks. Sprint I believe uses a different bandwidth than Verizon besides their old PCS network being incompatible. This is why you only see threads for how to use Verizon smartphones on Cricket and Boost mobile. W
When my first Verizon Eris died it was going to be a week before I could get a new phone so I called Verizon to see if I could activate my old Sprint Motorola Krzr as both companies sold them. Verizon can activate old phones from other companies, they verified this when I called, but unfortunately Sprint phones aren't ones they could activate.
@slim I did but will help you understand. I need to switch carriers and would like to see what people use and like to offer me suggestions on what company and phone to get. That's what I wanted to know lol

Well, I'd say to go with Sprint, as they are pretty much the only carrier left to offer truly unlimited data without throttling (although that probably won't be for long). They have some nice HTC phones over there like the Evo 3D, Evo Shift 4G, etc.

I mow through between 10 and 20 gig a month on my phone and I've NEVER been throttled on either the dInc or Tbolt I'm using. The last Sprint rep I spoke with 3 days ago made no attempt to hide Sprint's data throttling policy. I'm not sure where you heard that wasn't the case.
Concerning the OP's post, Sprint has consistently brought cream of the crop Android devices to the table. The primary reason the dInc garnered the dev community that it did was because the EVO 4G is nearly identical under the glass. Sprint has announced a transition away from WiMax for 4G in favor of LTE. When it appears they're making dramatically more headway on that front than they ever did with WiMax, I'll likely switch. I wouldn't be a customer of AT&T if they paid me. Or T-Mobile. I mean, unlimited 20-30 Mbit LTE in my pocket for $40 a month... you can't beat that with a stick!
OP the best way for you to decide is to look at each providers coverage in your area then go with the one with the best coverage. If they all have equal coverage then go with the one that offers the best plan that fits your needs/budget.
ew. I switched from Sprint to Verizon and don't regret a thing. I didn't have a bank account and couldn't get one until I paid off some debts and regardless of this, I was charged $4.99 every bill for NOT using their automated payment crap. on top of this, my plan originally was 69.99 for unlimited data, text, and maybe 450ish minutes. out of nowhere, random surcharges kept getting added to my bill and it got to the point where I was paying $102 because they added $30+ surcharges and taxes onto my account. I also never had good reception. really think going to Sprint is a bad idea.
if you are switching so that you can pay less, I can recommend that you go to Verizon and ask if your employer makes you qualified for a discount on your bill or (if you attend a college) see if you can use that. I get up to 17% off my bill and since I was grandfathered in with the old data plan, I pay only $47 a month for my phone bill with unlimited data+text.
I would also recommend sprint but wait until a better phone than the 3d come our since like the Htc evo soon after it came out the shift came out and now the 3d so that could mean that theres another one coming out with better specs... I personally was thinking on swtching to T-mobile and get the Thc Sensation but like "computerwiz908" I dont like the idea of getting rip with throttling..... Also if you decide let us know what you got...

Well take note you're asking a bunch of Verizon users.
Sprint is the best company out of the bunch as far as price but it depends on what type of reception you get where you're at. Sprint also has a nice selection of android phones, and if you like the INC then sprint has the EVO line of phones that are sort cousins to our phone- I actually like them better than the INC and INC2.
If you're switching to Sprint, you could get the Photon 4g. They're unlocking bootloaders now. The Photon 4g seems like a better upgrade to the Evo 4g rather than the Evo 3D. (Kickstand?!)

Keep your DInc and switch to Pageplus. Their service is over the Verizon network, but costs a lot less. You get the superior coverage of Verizon's network, without the add-on fees. Search "pageplus" for more detailed posts on this.
DInc with CyanogenMod 6.1 & Invisiblek #28 kernel.

I think ill stick with the Dinc for a bit I'm thing of switching carriers bcuz of horrible data coverage where I live.. but I'm moving at the end of September so I think ill tuff it out I saw that there is a chineese phone coming unlocked with the choice of 16gb dual core or a 32gb ver. With 4 cores which sounds tasty to me!! But .. from what I understand it can't be used on Verizon .. so I might switch to a carrier that allows similar cards and works on GSM not CDMA

Yeah having full bars doesn't do much. You don't get faster rates and the quality isn't lower, if you have 1 bar or less is the only reason you should worry about slowdowns and possible dropped calls.
Honestly I've never had 0 signal except while on a plane in high altitude or underground / tunnel. I live in VA and traveled out to California, went out to a rather remote lake and still got very nice 1x coverage, although 3G was very weak- it went in an out. Still good considering how far out it was and how there was practically nobody for miles and it wasn't near any interstates.

[Q] Using a 4G phone's 3G network worth it?

Would getting a Rezound with an off contract price and only using the 3G until my area gets some 4G love worth it.
Or should I just stick with my Dinc and/or get the best 3G phone my area has to offer.
I live on Guam and 4G isn't gonna be implemented any time soon, to my knowledge.
I've been asking about updates/upgrade to the network here and they say it'll happen but not anytime soon...
Yeah, I obviously chose the Rezound over the Nexus, I am hooked on Sense!!!
The few phones I have to choose here if I don't get the Rezound are:
1. Evo 3D
2. Dinc 2
3. Droid X2
I would choose the Evo 3D but think 3D in general is a gimmick but it would be cheaper than getting a off contract priced Rezound.
That is pretty much it, any comments are greatly apreciatated.
You have to think about the hardware and software. The new phones are fast as flash. But about internet speed it might be a little bit faster but I don't know I'm still rocking my Dinc

Rezound/HTC-Battery only 1350-fat and heavy-no HDMI-HTC bluetooth stack sucks(PS3/Wii controllers)HTC CDMA Radio So-So
GN/Samsung: No SD card slot, Samsung CDMA radio is poor.
Sorry some of these models aren't on your list but this is what I've had in hand and done research on.
Okay guys,
Thanks for all your input.
However I am suffering quite a big ordeal, well for me at least.
I went ahead and bought an HTC Thunderbolt but I can't use it.
It's just a very fast mini tablet right now that is rooted with Zues.
My carrier is unable to activate it but there is one thing that might work, there is a hack or something that would make it work. They *carrier** say that if the hack is done the 3G won't stick and/or the sms or voice or something like that won't work properly.
I've done my research and I assumed that since my Dinc runs with the same 3G interface as the Tbolt's that I wouldn't have a problem at all. I even asked around even asked the Wirefly ppl about it, they said shouldn't be a problem as long as the CDMA freqs are the same.
Anyways, looking at the phone lists that my carriers offer and after further inspection those most if not all they offer are Sprint phones. How could this be, they offer Verizon type phones and they offer Sprint type phones, what are they doing to able to do this.
In spite of the 3D gimmick, I think I will go with an EVO 3D it's the fastest phone on my carrier or I think it is. What would you suggest, I would have to pay 3xx for the phone.
So now, I gotta find a buyer for the Tbolt recoup from my loss and get a phone.

Leaving sprint, want to keep my E4GT, what are my options?

Sprint has sent me a termination letter for excessive roaming and cutting me off July 3. This is probably for the best because my new job has 0 sprint coverage (deep inside a building) and i've been roaming on verizon for the last 2 months while at work. Anyway, I do love my epic 4g touch and while there are other phones that are now "superior" I'd prefer to keep it if possible.
So my quesiton is:
What other providers can I use with an E4GT, and how much work does it take to switch? (Flashing, odin, etc). And also, what would I lose in terms of 4g/3g/MMS, etc I'd prefer prepaid services like boost or cricket but of course, I don't know if they have coverage where I work but having all options on the table would be helpful!
Thanks in advance XDA!
I think it can be flashed to metro pcs, boost mobile, and virgin mobile. There's a couple threads around here giving you exact instructions in how to do so so check those out. I believe you'll lose 4g except with metro and everyhing else should be good.

Virgin Mobile is launching their 4G WiMax service at the end of the month. Something to look into.
Page Plus (VZW) is really your only option as the rest of the MVNO's listed here are Sprint. So same/no service.
Best off selling it and getting a new phone honestly.

Ok time to give it to you raw..... (No Homo!) This is what you need to do my friend, go to google type in prepaid services and your zip code. See what pops up for your area then make some phone calls to them and ask them about their service in your area. Secondly you can then go to all of their respective sites and check out the deals. You may find like mentioned that selling the phone and purchasing lets say a T-mobile branded Galaxy 2 and using Simple Mobile may work better for you.
I understand trying to ask your fellow members but honestly what we are going to tell you I am sure you already know. Lastly, check with others in your area and see if one of the other big 3 work extremely well in your area that you desire the coverage and then check out their prepaid services
T-Mobile - Simple
AT&T - H2O
Verizon - Page Plus
Sell your phone for $250 purchase another Galaxy 2 for around $300 or work a trade out with someone.... Time to do some homework my friend... Get close with Google...
Happy searching!
if u get good boostmobile covarage in ur area then flash it to boostmobile
So it seems the only cdma carriers that use/resell verizon are pageplus and of course, verizion. Can an epic 4g touch be flashed to either of those?
I currently have my epic 4g touch flashed to straight talk 45 unlimited on Verizon coverage way better than sprint faster data far as 3g goes around 1.5mb a sec and signal is awesome

Awesome! How hard was it to flash it to straight talk? Any links would be helpful! I've never done a flash to another carrier so i'm not sure how hard it is exactly. So so far to get verizon coverage I can use:
Verizon resellers that work on an epic 4g touch (flashed):
Page Plus
Verizon Prepaid
Straight Talk
Sprint resellers
Boost Mobile
Cricket
US cellular?
MetroPCS
Virgin Mobile
If any of that is wrong let me know.
I flashed mine to Page Plus. Followed this guide, talk text and data work, but I am still working on removing the hidden Sprint APN settings to get MMS working.
It might seem a little intimidating, but it was pretty easy.

If you dont have a donor phone thats ok, but dont expect to get full 3G speeds without it. If you use the vzw password, you get 1x data. At least I am not getting raped on the monthly fee, so I can save up for the S3 and will probably move to straight talk.

question is, if he had to roam at work because Sprint obviously did not have tower close enough, then wouldn't Boost be a waste of time because you can't roam with boost, or virgin mobile for that matter, meaning he would just not have service where he works.

Thanks for that link, its awesome. I will likely go the page plus route though after googling the new phones im on the fence now, lol. The Galaxy note may be coming to t-mo as is the SIII. I don't want to spend $700 on a new phone, but if I can get $275 for my E4GT i'd be willing to pay maybe $500 and just eat the difference. I have until about June 20 to make my decision. At this point it'll either be new phone or page plus / straight talk flashed E4GT. I am pretty sure sprint doesn't set my ESN to bad on my epic just because they are booting me. If they do I'll be pretty irate.
if 4g is available in your area you can purchase a modem for it (clear wire, time Warner, net zero, etc) and use its MAC addy on your et4g as to still have 4g, I'll edit my post when I'm on my laptop to link to the thread with instructions to do that....

Letter of death workaround...
Have the same issue, you may want to try and port to Google Voice, terminate your Sprint account this will automatically happen once a port takes hold of the account number. Let the account terminate; start a new line of service from one of the big three or back to yellow shortly after. If you love the E4GT, go back to yellow the next cycle with a new bis/indiv. account and port your number back. Not happy or locked into the contract just prl flash back to the reason you most likely got terminated and then go over to big red when the SIII is released. Done and done... you'll keep the same phone if on yellow with little loss, and no ETF...
Can you explain what you are saying more for me? im getting kicked off due to a roaming issue on the 18th (tomorrow) and this is my business number so i need to keep it, however the 2nd line is fine on yellow which doesnt make any sence since its a business share plan so they told me that i can keep the 2nd line but will need to go to another carrier with the primary, dont care for limits on data so verizon seems like my only option but are you saying to take the number back to yellow after switching to another? cause they told me i could try after the new carriers 2 year contract but cant gaurentee ,,,but i thinkk that might have been a wink wink in the conversation from the yellow lady. i wouldnt mind switching to ver. prepay with my E4gt just to keep things smooth for now so if anything can you point me to a thread to do this (preferably wo a donor but i do have an old verizon prepay, its the one that flips both regular and landscape style, so would this one work as a donor, it has been activated before tho....thanks

[Q] Data while on phone?

This is something I just discovered the other day and it kinda bugged me out cause as far as I knew data while on voice wasn't possible on CDMA.. But I was inside a cafe getting lunch, and while on the phone I had to look up something on ticketmaster and was amazed that I was actually able to surf the web while on the phone. I have had blackberries, WM phones and an Evo prior to this and it was never possible (unless on wifi) I'm in NYC so there is no LTE available yet.. Has anyone who is in a non-LTE market able to do this?
I've seen this mentioned before by some others. Here's a link to one such thread.

Thanks! When I saw this I kissed my phone, LOL.. But really this is why this phone is so damn amazing.. It makes it so much easier to quickly look something up then to have to say "lemme look this up real quick I'm gonna call you back".
Yep it's great isn't it. The newer phones on Sprint or at least Galaxy 3 and Evo LTE are svdo capable aka simultaneous voice and data. Thank God cdma networks can now do this (Sprint, Verizon) as the gsm networks (TMobile, and AT&T) have been able to do this for a long time.

Yup! And don't forget the LG Viper it was the first LTE phone to bring the feature. Kinda messed up the Galaxy Nexus is the only LTE phone that don't support it.
yeah, I found this out today and I about screamed out of joy!. I was downloading G Maps and had to call my wife, so I called her and realized the 3G icon didn't go away, like it does on the Epic 4G (my last phone). And I had to tell my wife "hold on" and went back to my notifications and realizeed GMaps was still downloading. What a great feature on a CDMA phone. One more reason to love my GSIII I wish i could find out who thought of this, so I could buy him/her a beer. Peace!
i never even paid attention... usually the only time im using data while on the phone is at home with wifi or occasionally when im on 4g which of course is not cdma... never new this feature was implemented... good to know gsm no longer has the one up on us...
Does this chipset use a different 3G technology?
I remember when the Thunderbolt came out for Verizon everyone was amazed that it could do this and the reason was Verizon/Thunderbolt's Chipset was using some different type of EVDO revision that allowed it to work or something. Maybe I'm wrong on the technical details lol, but the general idea is right.....
