HTC Touch Pro2 help needed
Greetings everyone...
First of all, I would like to thank the developers and contributors here at xda-developers for making mobile life so easy and innovative for everyone..
I am here to discuss a problem that I am facing, which could be because I am not yet experienced with unlocking concept of locked mobiles..
Scenario :
I stay in INDIA and use IDEA cellular as my GSM network. Recently I bought a "HTC TOUCH PRO2" mobile from a dealer from Mumbai (Maharashtra) via Ebay.
The dealer said the phone was unlocked and shipped it to me.
It seems the phone was a US T-mobile locked phone earlier -- that is what I see from its appearance and logo of T-Mobile on screen.
I can insert by Indian SIM and use it to call and receive calls.. So, I believe the phone is defintely unlocked..
Now the problem :
1) I am facing issues to connect to internet using the GPRS services offered by my cellular network - which is IDEA.
2) I have made sure the settings for GPRS are configured properly in my phone.
3) I can browse websites using IE in the phone, but I cannot browse using the Opera browser in the phone ----- when using GPRS.
4) But when I connect the phone to my laptop using activesync, I can browse websites both in IE and Opera.
*** Please note the difference... Opera does not work with GPRS connectivity. IE works in all instances.
5) The instant messengers that are already installed in the phone (Gtalk, Yahoo, MSN) they do not connect no matter if I am connected via GPRS or ActiveSync.
Any idea why I am facing such connectivity issues with my HTC Touch Pro2 mobile?
Any help really appreciated.. Like I mentioned, I am a bit new to these things, so kindly bear with me if my questions sound illogical.

Some things you could try:
1. Install another version of Opera. You probably have Opera 9.7, then upgrade to Opera 10.
I use this one:http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=334007&d=1275104091
You can get more version in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5902175#post5902175
2. Go to Start, Settings, Connections, Connections. You'll probably see two kinds of connections, the one you setup and My Work Network. First select Manage existing connections on your configured connection, go to Proxy Settings tab and check if This Network Connects to the Internet is selected. Then go to Advanced tab, and see that the option Programs that automatically connect to the Internet... is on your configured network, and that Programs that automatically connect to a private network is set on My Work Network.
3. Go to your mail Inbox, press Menu, Tools, Options. Select your mail account and press Edit Account Setup. Keep pressing next until you see Outgoing (SMTP) mail server. Select Advanced Server Settings, and ckeck if Network connection is set to The Internet. If it is and email is still not working, try changing it to the connection you configured (however this might mess receiving email under wifi).

Thanks for getting back to me in this thread.. I really appreciate it...

-- I did try this.. I have tried installing Opera Mobile 10 (Touch) and Skyfire browsers. Both these browsers work fine when I try to access websites when connected via ActiveSync. However, they do not seem to connect to websites when I try from GPRS.
IE however works just fine in any case.

Yes, I have tried this as well and confirmed several times that the connections are setup as per your instructions. But it wont allow the inbuild chat applications (yahoo, gtalk, msn etc) to connect to internet.

I haven't tried this yet, however, will try it today..
What I believe is, applications on my handset are trying to access T-mobile internet settings everytime. Hence, they cannot connect. However, I have made sure that I have configure the connections as per the instructions in step 2 mentioned above.

The other thing you could do is install a custom rom, that will get rid of any T-mobile setting in your phone. Besides very likely fixing your problem, it will speed everything up and gain a lot of functionality. Check this thread before doing anything: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550540
Some tips for you (but read the thread, don't skip it):
1. You have to figure out if your phone is pure GSM or CDMA-GSM. If its a Tmobile from USA its a GSM. The thread tells you how to identify each.
2. The phone has to be HardSPL, this is to unlock it so custom roms and radios can be installed. Has nothing to do with SIM-unlocking as far as I know.
3. Browse through the threads in the ROMs subforum. I use Energy's Rom, but maybe there is one that better suits you. If you go decide for Energy's, READ the first posts of the thread very carefully, especially the FAQ and explanation of different versions.
4. Flashing a ROM will delete everything from your phone. Contacts, appointments and tasks are backed up by Outlook through ActiveSync, if you want to preserve SMS try PIM Backup, its free and easy to find and use. It doesn't save MMS, those you'll have to save manually.

Bingo..... Installed the custom Energy ROM today and it has fixed almost 99.9% of the problem that I was facing.
The old original ROM was such a waste that I had started hating my HTC Touch Pro2. But installing Energy ROM has given a new life to my HTC TPII. Its just excellent..
I can now connect to internet with my service provider settings.. All applications working like a charm... Battery life seems to have improved.. The device is faster as compared to the old ROM... its just excellent..
There are a couple of issues I am facing with this Energy rom, however they are negligible and can be considered as minor errors.. Rest, the devise is working like a charm..

Connectivity issue same as above

E-Mail Problem After Upgrading 8525 to WM6

I upgraded my Cingular 8525 to WM6 (specifically this one: RUU_Hermes_CINGULAR_WWE_3_1_.57.502.1_6275_1.48.00.00_108-ATT-MR3_Ship.exe). Now, when I am connected to my PC via USB cable, and have an ActiveSync connection, it can't check my e-mail via AT&T MEdiaNet. If I'm disconnected, it works just fine.
When I try to connect to MEdiaNet, I get a message that says "Error Syncronizing", then a popup that says "Cannot connect with current connection settings."
I'm using ActiveSync 4.5.0 (build 5096). In File->Connection Settings, I have checked "Allow wireless connection on device when connected to the desktop". Still no good.
AT&T's tech support has been of no help. It worked before I upgraded from the most recent official AT&T ROM to WM6, so I'm assuming there's some setting that's different, and I just don't know what it is.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me, please?
I also had this problem. It only started after I had set up internet sharing. I have currently got Schap's latest rom running. I have been able to get around the issue by setting up a bluetooth relationship with laptop, connecting to laptop, open ActiveSync on phone, menu, connect via bluetooth. Works fine like this.
Got a reply in another forum that solved the problem:
"On the Connection Settings screen there is an option for "This computer connects to?". What is yours set to?
Mine was set to Automatic and would not allow data connections. Once I changed it to Internet it allowed my 8525 to maintain a data connection via 3G when plugged in."
Upgrading to WM6
I am thinking about doing the same thing. Any tips for the upgrade process? Are you happy with the version you flashed to?
If you have checked the box to allow wireless connections to this device when connected to the desktop under connection settings in Activesync then that may well be the problem. Have had that problem with a number of ROMs

Before you upgrade any ROM or radio, the most important thing to do is read, read, read. There are some excellent resources available that will guide you through the process. Most important, as all the resources will tell you, is to install a program called "Hard SPL", a.k.a. Olipro. It reportedly goes a long way toward preventing problems when flashing the ROM. Best of all, like so many other wonderful tools for our HTC phones, it's free!
I'm happy with the version I used, but there is now a slightly updated one available. I had troubles with the battery life with radio version 1.48.00, so I changed to 1.50, which is working better. WM6 is a significant improvement over WM5, in my opinion. Faster, more stable, HTML e-mail, and more. Plus, you can always go back to WM5 if you don't like it.
Good luck!

I suggest reading the upgrade guide at www.mrvanx.org
Be sure to flash HardSPLv7 from Olipro
Yeah, I am really happy with having flashed my device. Once you do it, you can always redo it. Give something a try and see if you like it, then check other threads to see if you may want to try something else. Be sure you get the most recent version of whatever you select.

6.1 trouble

i've updated my phone with the kavana 6.1 rom- now my Internet sharing doesn't work- and i hate that when i sync with my computer it reads my phone as a dopod so the dashe's icon doesn't come up- can any one help with either of these problems
I flashed this rom for my girlfriends phone. Running into a lot of different issues. Not many options to customize the preferences either. However, hopefully these wonderful developers will create fixes, if they do not exist already. If they do they are probably scattered throughout the thread.
and i hate that when i sync with my computer it reads my phone as a dopod so the dashe's icon doesn't come up-

I think this happens with each upgrade because you're basically cleaning out your previous memory and starting fresh.
I don't have an answer for you regarding the internet sharing option.
However, if you want to get your old rom back you can go to T-Mobile website here is the link:
Link wasn't allowed but go to tmobile and click on support you'll see the first phone is the dash
Just go to update software. This may cure both of your issues if you don't want to bother with the current rom you have installed. However, you are still taking risks flashing the new rom. Good Luck.
I've got almost the same issue. Everything with SYNC works except for my internet sharing. It will not connect. I ave internet working on the phone, text works, it syncs when I connect the phone to the computer, I just can not use the internet sharing.
When I select connect on the phone I get that the computer is trying to acquire network address and then local area connection 6 has no or limited connection. I don't get it.

As you know, you have to first cut off your local connection server first, before turning on the Internet sharing on your mobile device. If not, it will never work, but Internet sharing works like a charm on my home network................!

Why on earth would you go back to Tmobile rom. This rom is far superior. All your issues will get worked out. That's just part of updating rom. have you read any threads on this.
I don't claim any great knowledge but does the connections settings in Activsync have anything to do with it.
I've been using this phone for a year, I use the internet sharing all of the time, mostly for work, it' s actually why I bought the phone. Now after I loaded WM6.1 I can not get the internet sharing to work. I've tried everything I've found on here, any ideas.

wmIRC

I've downloaded and installed the trial for wmIRC and it's working fine over WIFI on my HTC S621, but I can't get it to work over GPRS\EDGE ? I can use IE and Opera Mini without the WIFI.
Any ideas of what I can try, or are there other Windows Mobile Smartphone Standard IRC clients I could try?
Thank you,
Tim

make sure you start an edge connection before trying to log onto irc. i use wmirc daily and works through either connection. just open a browser and go to a website to initiate the data connection (for some reason wmirc will initiate *sometimes* and not others) then open irc and just hit connect. may take a sec to go through the ident and ****...but it gets there...

I've tried that, no luck. I don't have the ident option checked, but I never need it for WIFI. I'm just wondering if it's my carrier, Suncom blocking it. It's just strange to me that my email, IE, mini-opera, etc. works. But not this.
I'm looking now to see if I can find a way to link (or echo) messages over to an instant messenger ID. Because I know that I can get Palringo or some other IM client to work.
Thank you,
Tim

I wasnt so much talking about enabling indent..i was just talking about when you connect to the server and i queries the client..
what version of wmirc is it?
This probably doesn't help much but I have it working fine on another device over CDMA.
Honestly, prepare to be disappointed though. Its a very buggy program. The user lists tend to disappear, sometimes a new pm opens and switching from one to the next shows the same messages, and it randomly completely crashes.
There's also zsIRC at zsirc.com. However, this is many written for WM Pro, so there's a lot of things that you can't do if you don't have a touchscreen (also, you can't install the .cab on WM Standard and need to use the .exe installer.)
i agree. but for smartphone its really the only one that works. ive tried 3. wmirc, jirc and some other one that i cant remember.
as far as just chattin in a channel, its fine. ive had it up with no disconnects on the edge network for 8 hours. with wifi i have left on for days and it never crashed or disconnected. yea the user list is a little retarded, but thats a non issue for me. you can still use basic commands like /whois . i dont think its ever going to get better than this though. as far as i know, no one else is developing a new client.
so i guess just pick the lesser poison..if you want to run it through java (which i couldnt stand) try out jirc.
shoot me a pm and let me know what version you have. i will probably just give you a link to my site and you can try the one i have because i know it works. im running 6.1 rickys v. 24
I'm just using the standard 2.2 from the wmirc.com site.

WORKING Blackberry Connect configurations

Hello All,
I believe there are many like me who would love to get the Blackberry Connect Software working on their HDs. At the moment, it seems like black magic how to get it working and the other thread doesn't really contain much useful information on working configurations.
So far, we know the following:
1. It is Radio, ROM and SIM card dependent.
2. You need to have the BB service provisioned on your SIM and have the new style SIMs that support full data functions.
3. Latest version of BB Connect required for TouchHD (4.0.0.106). This is available from HTC Asia on on the internet (just search these boards)
What i'd like to use this thread for is for people to post WORKING configurations with as many details as possible regarding the setup/installation procedure. I'll start with the only configuration I've managed to get working so far.
ROM: Dutty's 1.9b extreme
Radio: 1.12.25.16
SIM: Blackberry service from MTN
Installation/Procedure:
- Flash ROM
- Install BB Connect software
- Provision SIM card
- Connection was activated after a few hours.
Other information:
- The BB connect service defaults to IE as the browser.
- BB Push email service worked but with lag. SEVEN was much better in this regard.
- I was unable to get messenger, stock tabs, weather update, google maps, etc to use the BB connection
- BB push email service creates its own mail folders on your device regardless of what you already have.
- BB email folders do not have full flip to scroll to next message functionality in TF3D.
- BB email did not display pictures, etc
Please lets have other users chime in here and perhaps we can get a Wiki section created for BB Connect on the HD. Lets please keep to the same format as above to keep the information easily referenced and trackable.
Thanks
Thanks for the info, I have been able to run the service with all ROM's expect for the ones built on 6.5 OS's..
Connection was instant in each installation (right after a reset I am connected - then I'd push my service book -- done)
I do not have any lags in mail arrival.
Its satisfactory for me- but as you said you have to stop the BB service prior to any attempt to use the data connection for other purposes (IE, weather...etc)
Only thing I miss is the blackberry messenger.
Thanks for the thread.
Taiseer
Thanks for responding Taiseer.
Could you tell me what mobile operator and country you're using? Secondly, what do you mean by push your service books? Is than an automatic process or manually performed by you? In the installation that worked for me, I didn't do anything of the sort.
After installing did you have your BB sim in the phone or did you insert it later?

I am currently residing in Oman and its Omantel...
and normally what I do after the 1st installation and device reset, all of my mail arrives to a new mail account named system..(and I won't be able to send or reply to mail from it), so to be able to get the rest of my accounts and have a better use out of the service, I log on to the Operator's blackberry's site and manually demand a service book sending.. in few seconds mail arrive into auto formed mail accounts..
As far as the SIM card its always in the HD..
It looks like SEVEN may be better for me then, how does battery compare between the two.
Thanks for the information Taiseer. My provider does not offer the internet log on option so I guess I will need to get them to push the service books to me somehow. When I install the software with the sim in it, i get nothing after a soft reset. No pin and no ip address. Did you find that MS Live or any other microsoft service was able to use the BB connection or is it just the browser?

Seven has a good service and I've had no complaints. The BB data plan is the cheapest where I live though. So if you can get unlimited (or cheap) data packages, stick with SEVEN. I didn't notice any differences with battery life.

No - you got to stop data connection, but because I am used to my WIFI conection and hotspots everywhere I normally do not discounnect the BB connection, DO you??
Whilst my service worked I was too scared to disconnect the BB connection so I just didn't use any of the other services. It sucked. I've just flashed Davideuck's newest V 2 ROM so we'll see if i can get it working.
Okay, great news people. I've got my service working on Davideuck's Version 2 rom. It required a call to my network provider. For all those installing on a HD, its down to your provider regardless of what they say.
Taiseer, thanks for the heads up about the blackberry page for my subscriber. I managed to track mine down and set up my email accounts from there.
Woohah!
I am using a stock ROM 1.14.405.3(22273) WWE, Radio 1.09.25.15
I hate to have to use a cooked ROM, I've used Dutty's ROM's on my Kaiser and they worked well but this phone works so well I don't want to mess things up.
I believe the stock ROM should work as well. Be sure to hassle your service provider to set it up on their end. I think some providers are not pleased to offer the BB service for non BB phones and do not fully enable the service (they can tell that its not a BB phone from the PIN number). After a talk with my provider, I was told to reset my phone and presto! all was working.
It works on on my Kaiser so I know it works on my T-Mobile plan. I may mess with the radio's to see what I can do.
Sorry to keep adding to this thread but I have some new developments. I upgraded the ROM to 1.19.831.0 and Radio 1.09.25.14
I have version 106 and ran the desktop software, it switched the PIN from the Kaiser to the HD. I changed the version reset the device and now I have the service books and an IP address.
When I look at the status I get network available>data tunnel available then not connected.
Update, since it wasn't working I tried to reinstall BB Connect on the HD, when I tried to configure I got the PIN 0 error. As a last resort I put the SIM in the Kaiser and configured it, then switch to the HD, configured it and it worked!
I'm not sure but it looks like changing the PIN was all I needed to do.
blackberry working great on orange uk htc touch HD standard phone
I downloaded the blacberry install files form a link on this forum, I belive it was the same blackbery files from HTC.
Rom Version 1.19.61.1 wwe
Radio 1.09.25.14
Installed the BB app to phone - then went to start settings > system >" click" icon blackberry.
Blackerry connect (identity) tab shows 3 bits of info
PIN said something like waiting for PIN
IMEI 78*******************
IP Address No connection
Spoke to orange asked for blackberry service. they said 5 permonth £ 250MB of blackberry
Orange sent me text message with a pin number and told me of the orange blackberry site to go to I think it is blackberry.orange.co.uk
On the blackberry.orange.co.uk I enterd the PIN number from the text message and IMEI number.
My phone recived a text a turned it of and turned it back on.
Checked the Blackerry connect (identity) tab
PIN was now populated with the pin that was in the text message
IMIE still there
IP Address says connected.
Went back to the blackberry.co.uk setup my email accounts with blackberry the pressed service book. looked at my phone 20 mins later and my there email accounts were there 2 for work and 1 for home.
I dont do much surfing on the phone but opera works and and the blackberry is fantastic.
orange were very helpfull on this.
But saying that blackberry is really a network service Windows Live I belive does a similar thing you get push email.
I'm glad to see people are getting it sorted. There are certainly many other options for connectivity and push email. Some even work better than the BB service. The reason i'm on the BB service is that its the cheapest way to browse regularly and get push email in my part of the world. When a page can cost as much as 30 pence via gprs versus 20 pounds a month for unlimited data on the BB plan, its a no brainer. Yes, I'm painfully aware we're being gouged but theres no getting away from that.
I have a problem with blackberry connect...
Everything installed just fine, receiving message OK, BUT...I can't send mail because option new mail, reply on mail also, is disabled
Very strange, because I used earlier bb connect on diamond and everything worked...
Any solutions?

Its probably because you are only having the "system mail account" you should try to send your service books to your winmo via provider
Thank you very much - I'm tottaly forgot the way how to do that, working now!
Problems with BB connect on HTC HD
Hi guys,
after setting up successfully BBconnect on my HD, I noticed that when I send emails from my BES account on my laptop, I always find them in my Inbox (not in Sent Items as I would expect) of my HD reporting me as Sender and no body message in it. Instead, should I send emails from my handled device, I always find them in Sent Items of my device as expected....Has anyone of you faced the same issue?
Thanks...

Cannot connect with any browser, even though I have acces to th internet

(At&t's HTC Tilt 2 Unlocked, original ROM, win 6.5
)Guys, this is driving me nuts.
When I connect to the internet, via EDGE, both my browsers can't download data at all.
It's really weird.
I can send email on all of my accounts, use my facebook app, etc. It's just the browsers (IE and Opera) that are dead.
I have soft and hard reseted my device, and nothing changes.
When I'm WiFi, everything works Ok.
Any known issues about this?
Thanks,
Dan from Costa Rica
(as soon as I solve this, I'm planning on starting some serious mod of the phone... coming from an old HTC P4350, it's a huge step fwd).
perhaps, you have disabled the "proxy" - try enabling it.
My connection doesn't require a proxy... it's really weird, it was working OK a couple of days ago.
Shot it the dark, but look at Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Connections
Look at the Advanced tab and click on "Select Networks"
Make sure both drop-downs are set to use the correct connection. Not sure what it'll be called on yours, but on mine (T-Mobile) they are both set to "T-Mobile Data"
Also make sure your Wifi isn't on, but not connected to a network, when trying to browse. I find that if my wifi is on, but not connected, all browsers still try to use the wifi and fail.
Good luck,
notaliberal,
Thanks for the tip.
For some reason I had one of them set differently, BUT it's still dead.
Again, I'm pretty sure it's no the phone, since my emails work efforrlessly.
I'm pretty sure something happened with the config.
Damn, it's driving me crazy.
guys, Ok, this is driving me nuts.
I have discovered a couple of details that I think are important.
I have managed to make the BROWSERS work... but it's no a definite solution.
When I turn on the DATA CONNECTION, I was able to check emails, and use Facebook App with no problems at all.... but no browsers worked.
I found out that if i turn on my WiFi, but DO NOT connect to any network, now the browsers work perfectly. This gives me like 10-30 minutes of my browsers to work, but after that time I loose acces to data again.
I have to turn on the Wifi, and turn it off, to gain access again.
It's so confusing and weird, because I haven't read anything like this in the whole forum.
It seem that it's not a hardware thing, but a firmware or software issue... or am I missing something here?
Maybe this will help:
At&T Tilt 2 Original ROM
When turned on:
B 80
R 4.48.25.20
G 61.39tc.25.30h
D 1.59.67150
I had a similar problem and it turned out the carrier had put a bar on my internet usage, from long ago without my consent... Funny thing was, I could access the weather, update time and emails with no problem from my old Hermes but once I got the rhodium I couldn't.
Might be your carrier doing funny things....
Ultramag, and by any chance do you know what should I do to solve this? or what did you do?
The problem is that I don't know anyone with another Tilt2 to check if it's the phone or what.
Tonight I'll be checking with my old HTC P4350 to see if I have any trouble conneting.
Thanks.
Neu
Are you using a Tilt2 with stock AT&T Rom on a non-AT&T network? If so, maybe the best solution would be to install a custom rom. The old AT&T network connections might be getting in the way of your carrier settings. If you don't want to flash a custom ROM, go to settings, Connections, Advanced (tab), Select Network, and check that the programs are being directed to your carrier's connection. Also check on your browsers that they are set to connect to Internet, and not Work Network or anything else.
Jose, yes, I'm using AT&T ROM on a non AT&T network.
I did as you said, on the Advance tab set BOTH to connect to my carriers settings, and I still have the same problem.
I trid to do the second thing yu asked me to do, but I don't know where to find those settings on my browsers (IE and Opera).
If I have to install a costum ROM, I'd like to try first a ROM that's really basic... maybe an official HTC 6.5, to start. Any one like this that you could recommend?
Had to contact the carrier. Got stuffed around a lot. Luckily for me I knew someone who worked in a store, they got in contact with the faults department and 3 weeks later it got fixed.... Was a major pain in the arse though...
I just saw on the HTC page, that there is a ROM that is newer than the version I'm using.
Mine is from 09/25/2009 according to the Device Info, and HTC has a version from 02/05/2010
It's REALLY driving me nuts, so I hope this thing solves the issue.

A guy from India posted about a month or so with a similar problem, he had an unlocked T-mobile programed it with his carrier settings yet the browsers were not working, had to install a custom rom to solve it. I think some registry keys have the browsers going through different network settings. Have you tried using Skyfire, or Opera 10? Maybe a browser that didn't come with the phone will work.
Regarding custom roms, I've only used Energy's since I flashed my Tilt2, and they've worked great for me. If you want a clean rom, I've heard Da_G has one, and he's pretty well respected here. Just in case you're not aware, before installing a custom rom you have to install HardSPL and do some reading. Check the sticky threads in the roms sections. And Tilt2 phones need a CAB before they can be HardSPLed, check this page http://tilt2.blownfuze.org/.
Guys, I just updated my ROM wit the AT&T one, and the problem is still there.
I guess I'll have to install a costum ROM.
I'll follow the instructions from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=550540
But they never mention any CAB before the HardSPL? :?
-*-*-*-*-
Last dumb question:
Since I'll be testing new ROMS, once I HardSPL the phone and try a new ROM, i f I don't like it, I just have to flash a new ROM on top of the old one right? no more HardSPL? (aka HardSPL must only be done once?)
My main concern is that at first, I want a ROM as close to the original, but without all the AT&T crap.
Obviously, now I want something that solves this stupid problem with my browser, and now that someone in India had the same issue, I now it's not a matter of hardware.
Thanks.
Neu from Costa Rica
PS: Myphonw came both with Opera and IE. Actually Opera gives me much more trouble that IE with this issue. Unfortunately, now Skyfire only works on certain countries, and Costa Rica is definitely NOT one of them
It's not hardware or a ROM issue. Most likely that it'll be fine with a custom ROM, but I only use official At&t ROMs.
I had the same issue, as I don't use At&t as my network, and I fixed it. My IE and Opera, and other built-in phone services work fine.

The CAB before HardSPL is mentioned here: http://tilt2.blownfuze.org/
Some people have posted on Energy's thread saying they can't use HardSPL with a Tilt2, and they were told that a Cab is needed, I assume the one posted on that website. HardSPL is only needed once, after using it you can flash and reflash TP2 roms and radios as long as they are for GSM phones.
Using Task29 is recommended before flashing roms, some people claim that flashing a new rom might not clean everything from the previous one, which causes glitches. For safety purposes I've start doing that, but I've never had any trouble when Task29 was not available.
Regarding a rom close to AT&T stock, I can't help you with that, you'll have to look at the different ones available. Since AT&T just came with a new version it's likely that many chefs will use it as base, but how far they modify it will depend on each one.

Graham, the question is HOW to fox it without a custom ROM.
I finally figured it out.
It seems that it's a PROXY issue.
Looking more into xda forums, I found out that there is a small program under START>Tools> Proxy Manager where you can Disable Proxy Settings.
Unfortunately, that ONLY fixes Internet Explorer.
Reading some more, you can fix Opera by entering on the address bar "opera:config" (without the ") in the proxy settings, remove the HTTP proxy and HTTPS proxy (leave blank).
The only problem is that this settings are removed in Opera with a soft reset.
the only way to change Opera settings permanently is to edit \Windows\Opera\opera.ini and set the Use HTTP and Use HTTPS proxy settings to 0, then soft reset.
Thanks to user Moltenfire (original post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5120862&postcount=3)
Thanks for all the help guys... Thanks to you, now, after all this, I'm decided to give the Simplicity ROM a try

Edit: It seem that after Opera 9, which is the one that came with my Tilt2, the settigs changed through opera:config STAY even though you reset your device.
I realized this because I didn't install Total Commander yet, did quite a lot of reseting, and Opera is working perfectly... so is IE!
PS: Just in case, in Opera9 the settings are called "HTTP server=" and "HTTPS server=" and must be left BLANK... in case you need to edit the opera.ini
