Whats the funnest way to rack up a ton of data usage? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Besides the obvious Tethering and downloading torrents whats the best, fastest and or easiest way to use alot of data on sprint's "unlimited" data plan? I don't have any other wireless devices so I can't tether and download stuff.

It would probably be best to answer to what it is you're trying to accomplish. Why else not use the simplest method to get data high? Doesn't make sense.

I want to test out this "unlimited data" theory and also in hopes that they cancel me so I won't have to pay a hefty early cancellation fee

Why in the world world world you need to get out high. Seems like yoy could just use the phone for whatever you need and call it good.

They won't let you out of a contract that easily. They make too much off of you. But they might work harder at approving an across-the-board usage cap for everybody and/or throttle our connections. And we'll have fools like you to thank. Maybe you should just learn to manage your finances if you signed a contract you couldn't afford just to get a new phone. Or do you just not like the phone or Sprint?

+1. Seriously, instead of being a **** and potentially screwing the rest of us you could just man-up or wait for some tiny change in Sprint's contact that allows you to get off for free.

A guy mentioned he had done over 100 gigs with 3G...so good luck. Also I can't remember if it was Sprint but someone just recently changed their contract and people were mentioning it would be a way out...you might look into that. Or find someone to buy your phone and take over your contract...they're still hard to find.

Damn guys, dont be so hard on the fellow. One persson cant **** it up for the rest of us...however if we
all start doin it, or maybe i dunno..a group of people..then. but thats not going to happen, i think the majority of us is just a little smater than that.

You should planned your purchase.
Don't bother trying to hit the cap, since you pay $10 a month you really do have unlimited internet.

No, it does not. Rooting allows you to install certain apps that the device would otherwise not allow you to install (among other things).
Thank you for your reply I kinda have a guilty conscience call me weird I don't wanna do what I'm not supposed to lol God bless, later.

Rooting will allow you to install apps like the android wifi tether app, so yes it could be used for illegal activities but there are many other reasons to root like custom roms or kernels

Yes infact you can do exactly that with a rooted evo. Wireless tethering is a free feature of android 2.2 It is built into the OS of the phone. Sprint blocks out this feature and forces you to use their program to access the wireless tether feature.
I dont consider it illegal one bit to use a completely open source software, such as CyanogenMod, that is designed to let you use a feature that IS free to use.
All of us pay sprint more than enough money for unlimited data, so who are they to tell us how we use the data we pay for? I dont see Comcast knocking on my door telling me to pay $10 a month because i use a wireless router in my house.

That is correct. Although technically they say nothing about wireless tethering (for one device), but USB tethering is built in, I believe. It's been so long since I was using a stock ROM, I don't remember what was there.
I wonder how long it will be before somebody develops a third-party Hot Spot app.

Not illegal just a breach of your contract... maybe. Depends on how they worded the contracts. But for the most part you can't do anything illegal with root that you cant do without.
After rooting my phone, I repeatedly beat an old lady to death. I'm pretty sure rooting the phone made no difference but hey.

Actually they restrict the USB too. Hotspot and USB are enabled with the $29.99 extra charge. I know cause I tried to connect via USB, called a rep and he explained why it was not working. I installed pdanet and it worked perfectly.
I think they were the ones stealing from people by charging that outrageous fee for something other carriers and phone models have free. But that's just my opinion.

In the end you are simply using your phones data plan, regardless of how you use it. There is no law whatsoever that restricts how you do so.
What is questionable is whether or not Sprint determines this to be a violation of your contract with them. As far as I can tell, I haven't found any wording that says it is a violation.
So long story short, there's no reason to feel guilty about using wifi tethering for free. You won't go to jail, and Sprint won't suddenly terminate your contract.

it was never "illegal" the LoC modification to the DCMI only says that carriers can't pursue civil penalties for rooting your phone.
but to answer the op if you do root your phone you CAN run a hotspot app to circumvent sprint's charge. but rooting your phone itself is not illegal, does not violate the DCMI or FCC regulations
Thanks to everybody for their reply's, some were funny too. Im not worried about the Cops showing up at my door or anything like that. Just something I was always interested in knowing, because from my experience this community has never supported anything like warez or other ways to rip devs and companies off. But from my understanding I rooted my phone to modify performance and apperance, not really to do anything else, and I did read the court's decision on it being legal, so Im pretty good with that, thanks to all for the info.
Everything I read says that the $30 fee is to use Sprint's Hot Spot application.
I do not pay the fee. I do not use their application. I AM however paying them a mandatory $10 upcharge for unlimited data so everyone is happy.

I'm sorry you missed the point. Let me see if I can break it down for you. As Rakeesh_j stated, you are just using the data plan and we all pay a premium for unlimited data so it shouldn't matter if you are using it for your phone's browser or tethered to your PC.

Actually there is a thread somewhere on how people have gotten out of paying the Ten dollar fee, it seems hit or miss to me, but apparently some people can talk their way out of it.
Call me silly, but I want root so I can UNINSTALL applications on my phone, like NASCAR, NFL, Sprint Nav, Sprint TV, Amazon MP3, and a host of other crapplications that I will never use.
I'd be really upset if I bought a new computer and it had a bunch of applications that I couldn't uninstall, especially ones that were always launching on their own (and possibly connecting to the network) without any action from me.

[Q] Free Hotspot question.

I found an app which allows for free wifi tethering without rooting. If i continue to use this, do i violate my contract and if i do what is the worst that can happen?
If sprint terminates my contract, do i have to pay an early termination fee? Would I be able to keep my phone?

That question has been asked in forums since the hot spot mod was hacked. There are risks in everything and unless someone has been busted then I don't see anyone being able to answer you. If you are worried then pay for it or just don't use it. Search the other 100 threads about this and see what others have done

If you get caught, it is theft of service and since Sprint is located in Kansas, it is across state lines and as such is a felony and a federal offense. Sprint has been cracking down real hard on illegal tethering and many have been arrested and thrown in jail. Surprised you haven't heard about that, it's been all over the internet lately. They gave this one guy 5 years and denied his appeal. It seems harsh, but theft is theft any way you look at it.
My recommendation to you- stay away from tethering, especially if you enjoy your freedom.

I'm not trying to get kicked off by sprint, but if terminating my contract (without any ETF's) is the worst thing they can do then I feel like I have no worries (since when is a free $600 phone a bad thing =) ). They send you a letter telling you that you are using the tethering feature of the phone without paying and that to modify your behavior (aka stop tethering without paying) or they'll be forced to do something about it (make you cough up the $$$ or boot you off the network).
The only time's we hear people getting these letters are where it's just obvious they're tethering. Aka Console gaming (some guy did 100gb and got pissed off and came here to rant... yall remember him? ya.... lol), HD netflix, torrents, or just outrageous stuff that involves things you don't usually use on a phone.
Other than that, i don't believe they do a whole lot else (waste of time usually to do anything else..... you = statistics, aka replaceable)

It's as simple as they did better than people were expecting. They're still highly leveraged which is risky, but their improved cash flow suggests some margin of safety business-wise. Also, they've done very well so far in improving customer service and expanding their network. That wasn't a bad day for myself either...
I wish network Vision would come to the nyc area sooner.
Sell! Sell! Sell! lol. Only in these fabulous economic times can a company post losses for a couple straight years and then as soon as they post losses that aren't as bad as predicted, they become a company that people want to invest their money in. Wasn't too long ago bankruptcy was rumored to be an option. lol. Hopefully, it keeps up, they can use it to help secure loans for NV.

As long time Sprint customer I will agree that their customer no-service has changed to customer service. They have done a lot of improvements to right that ship, not to mention some of their plans are very nice, unlimited data... what other carrier has that now (unless grandfathered in)
Glad others feel this way and not just me. I bought it awhile ago when I knew they were getting the iphone, NV was rolling out, and LTE would be out soon. Took a couple dips on me, but it's doing well now! This was the first stock I've ever bought too.....figured I'd buy something I at least knew a lot about. What are other's opinions of a relative short term high point? In my head 6 months ago I thought $5 would be my sell point but I've read recently that that is the point it's ok for fund managers to buy so it will probably go up more from there. Just wondering what other people thought.
I think the new iPhone will give them another boost as people figure out that Sprint LTE is real and they can get unlimited fast data on Sprint.

I pray people don't figure this out. Sprint's data speeds TANKED when the iPhone hit, and you can be assured that an LTE capable iPhone will do the exact same thing...fricking hipsters.

3G on Deactivated Epic

Long story short, I recently switched to an iPhone. My Epic served me well, but I was tired of carrying an iPod in one pocket, and my phone in the other. The only thing I really miss right now is the ability to use the hotspot without having to get it enabled from Sprint, and paying for it. I'm without the ability to jailbreak right now (lousy iOS 6), so there's nothing that can be done about a free hotspot on the iPhone just yet.
My question is, can data be reenabled on the Epic, even though it's been deactivated? I have an old phone that would still go online after it had been deactivated, so long as I updated the data username/password (##combination of some kind) every time it changed.
So, is there a way to get the Epic back connected to 3G, so that I can use it as a mobile hotspot?
1) Why the hell would you downgrade to an iPhone?
2) Why would you need an iPod and an Epic when you could just add music, movies, etc to your SD card?
3) Call Sprint and ask about a data only plan and fork over the 50-60 a month instead of trying to steal bandwidth.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2

Simple. No plan=no 3g. There is no way to fool Sprint's network into releasing you an ip. If that were the case people would be hacking Clearwire's 4G internet floating around.

Why would you need the hotspot? Iphones have 3g and wifi, and if you have the new one, LTE. I see no point in this endeavor. Why don't you just pay your carrier to use the built in hotspot? You're going to be paying for it either way.

Thanks for the answers kenny and flastnoles, i thought of PMing either of you to ask, but figured I'd just post and see what I got. The only reason I even asked was because I only use the hotspot once every other month, if that, so paying $30 a month just doesn't make sense. This entire topic will be a moot point once the jailbreak for iOS6 comes out, because there's a tweak that'll do for the iPhone what the HotSpot hack does for Android.
FYI, using the powers of Google, I've also found out you can activate the hotspot for about $1 a day. Just call and ask to turn on hotspot with an expiration date.

thats pretty much the same as cloning esns. it IS COMPLETELY legal IF you have the two devices in your possession and not trying to sell one of them without the other, you also have to have the esn(blah blah blah) attached to the back of the device you cloned it to.
and as for clear 4g, im currently trying to use it as a doner to use on boosts network. in turn can be used for our epics

carrier data block

Does anyone know away around Verizon seeing how much data you use before they slow you down or if your tethering .I have unlimited but it's gets throttled looking for away around that .

You can use the Verizon app to see how much data your using. As far as finding a way around them monitoring your data usage, that, I don't know. Probably illegal anyway

Not sure how it's illegal as it's an unlimited data plan. As far as carriers monitoring usage to effectively kill an unlimited plan they profited from by advertising it is probably actually "illegal" or misleading advertising. I really think these carriers should be pressured to change the wording of their "unlimited" plans through the CFPB or whatever they are calling themselves these days. Unlikely nthis will happen due to the current political atmosphere.

how is it misleading? it is in their TOS when you sign up for whatever plan. I know that if I use over 50GB on tmobile i can be throttled, i still can use data even if it is slower, so therefore it is still unlimited. Their plans are't titled UNLIMITED HIGH SPEED DATA. These unlimited plans are Not like the some of the old school plans that just cut you off, or end up charging you extra for data you go over.

It's not illegal but does violate the TOS agreement from the carrier. At the same time hiding a tethered connection is futile. It's simply impossible to hide as carriers have at least half a dozen different ways of detecting it.

Ok thanks I realize now bad idea does anyone know how I can delete this post
https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/be.mygod.vpnhotspot
You will also need to connected a vpn that has decent speeds.
PrivateInternetAccess works pretty good and it is like $30 per year with a coupon, search slickdeals.net or some other similar site for code. Plus PIA you can change the packet size if verizon is looking for that.

Relax, you are not going to jail. You asked a question, and did nothing.

You can't delete a post. You can edit it to something like "delete" if you want but once you're quoted then it's on your permanent record. A mod can delete it too. But as you've been told you did nothing wrong. Don't sweat it.

So I go to an all you can eat buffet for lunch. I eat 2 plates of cream of somyungui. Then I would like another. I go back to find out that after 2 plates I must now wait till dinner to have another. Also I have to wait until everyone else ate. When I can finally have another plate I find there is hardly any left and it takes a long time to get what I had during lunch.
This is not unlimited. Carriers are spinning the meaning of the word. We saw this before the prior net neutrality laws were passed several years ago. Unlimited to start, then so slow you think the website is down, or it just times out all together.
I do agree with others that the carriers will know if you are tethering or not regardless. The real question is if you root and unlock native tethering, will they force a "tethering fee" assuming you didn't have such fee when you signed your contract.
Don't make analogies. They're never 100% equivalent to what you're trying to compare it to.
Throttling ≠ data cut off. It sucks but it's still unlimited data.

@EeZeEpEe: The guy is trolling, and the facts you have provided he will ignore as they don't fit his narrative. The main reason I haven't replied to him is because he is being intellectually dishonest. He knows full well that the carriers aren't abusing the definition of unlimited like they did in 2010.

They're not?

I don't see above where anyone provided facts to back up their argument. Since u mad, (The main reason I haven't replied to him is because he is being intellectually dishonest), here is clear evidence of abuse. I would also argue that this is the worst case of throttling ever and the next closest is the AT&T/FaceTime fiasco. All under the guise of various tiers of 'unlimited' data. Check out the wehe app. It helped with studies on this exact topic, including Senate oversight committee sending questions to the major carriers.
@cedargreen: Mad? That would mean I had feelings on the topic. The reality is I just call it as I see it. Your first post in this thread is nothing but a strawman argument, thus you are being intellectually dishonest. Now, you clearly must be bored if you have to respond to a post that as of this writing is four months old. I don't go out of my way to feed trolls, so we're done here.
