Upgrade ROM - im new to this.

Hi everyone, i would have searched but the problem is i dont know what im looking for.
I want to change my rom to a diffferent one which i can obviously find. But my question is.. i want to theme it too but dont i need to find the rom thats in an update.zip? Or something like that?
Or do i just adb to my pc then repackage what ive made changes to in the rights dirs into an update.zip and sign it and flash it?
Sorry i didnt know where to ask but i thought this would be the best place.

Hi.
I'm a noob at this myself, and i flashed my Desire yesterday. First of all you have to root your phone to do anything (at least I think so) and thats just so easy with unrEVOked.. And flashing radio and ROM is very easy too, just take a look at the turorials on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
VERY NICE and easy to understand =)
I rooted my origional rom with revoked which was easy (and scary!) But fine.
So i think i need. De-odexed rom so i can theme everything in it.
So.. to theme bits in my rom do i?:
Adb the files to my pc, edit and repackage them into apk?
Then sign it and reinstall it or do if i have multiple files keep the file structure and package as an update.zip and flash it using the boot menu optiong..thing lol

As the saying goes, learn to walk before you run
If you're new to rooting and the like then you shouldn't even be thinking about theming until you have a sound knowledge of flashing ROMs and adb. Go read up whatever you can find on Google and once you know flashing a ROM back to front then look into theming and other such activities

EddyOS is correct.
Try to find out about flashing a custom ROM first.
I suggest to begin with LeeDroids ROM first, since this ROM is relatively safe for newbies.

Z4 root?

Hi I just "rooted" my phone with the z4 app and the root checker says its rooted also I have busybox and superuser. I'm super new at all of this all I want is gingerbread on my epic how can I do this and what do I need to make my phone awesome. And can I change my battery in the status bar? Everything I download says not compatible please help
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
There are no gingerbread roms. Period.
There is no froyo source to build from.
Use search before posting any questions.
Agree... if we don't have froyo how would we have gingerbread? Also your gonna need more than root to flash anything.

I see some young grass hoper hasn't done there homework.
1)z4root only gives you root
2) gingerbread is not available on the epic and will be some time before it is.
3) look at number one. If you samba flash something you need cwm installed
If you searched or even read the newbie thread that's stickied you would know all of this already. Do your home work. Search xda. Search google. then do a manual search if xda. Then read, re-read, then read again and then ask a question.
Android Creative Syndicate- From spontaneous ingenuity, comes creative brilliance
I don't claim to be a pro but besides z4root you're also going to need CWM on your phone before downloading and flashing any ROMs at all. The ROMs themselves can be found in various threads throughout the Android Development forum. Some of them have made changes that include the battery icon. Others have themes you can also download and install that will change in automatically for you. Either way if you intend on messing around with your phone I suggest two things.
A) Do a complete backup of all information of your phone
B) Before doing any software/operating modifications read through all instructions thoroughly. There's often a lot of headaches involved for the first little while and some of it can be alleviated by making sure you have everything you need done before you start.
Remember this isn't an exact science and there is always the chance of bricking your phone. Make sure you're ok with that.
??????
It seems from your post that u don't know much about the epic. or how to root. All the advice people are giving you is valid. BUT... Here is the thing. If you don't know what your doing your more liable to brick(or semi brick your phone). Here is my suggestion RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH here is a list of things u should look up.
odin and how to use
1 click root
what rooting enables u to do
(if u don't already have it) How to set up an android debuging bridge
Its better to teach a man to fish then to just give him one.
You may not like it now but in the long run it will be a great help when A you semi brick your phone or B you have a question that could be easily answered had u looked it up.
p.s. Not compatible- try downloading astro download manager or linda download manager off the android market.
thanks for all the info but i did do research and read the simple step by step instructions i just dont understand (questions 1-3 by MysteryEmotionz i knew already) and i had my epic since october (company phone) also i work at a cellphone store so i know froyo isnt out yet but i figure someone woulda made ginger bread compatible somehow since the nexus s is a samsung :/
i found a theme that i really want i just donno how to get it compatible with my phone (roms or kernels) and it didnt say so i didnt know if i should unroot it with the z4 app and maybe root it through the computer like those one click roots.. cuz thats what the instructions said i also dont really have a computer to do all the file transfers from so it seems kinda hard to do everything from the phone and yes im a noob to all this rooting and customizing but i really do appreciate your help i thought thats what forums are for..

Does anyone know?

I followed this guide to change my Sprint banner a number of months ago. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889891&highlight=Edit+Sprint+Banner. My question is this... What exactly did following that method change? The reason I ask, is because no matter what ROM I flash, and no matter what changes I make, that modification remains. It always says my name on the lockscreen, and notification bar. So I was curious, what did that method actually modify, because nothing wipes the mod out. Wiping, doesn't change anything with it. I'm fine with that, and have no interest in changing it back, but I was just simply curious, about what the heck that method changed, that allows the mod to remain no matter what. I don't understand how a complete wipe of the phone doesn't wipe the mod out. The other method, by JsChirf, which requires hex editing some xml files, seems like if you were to do a full wipe and reflash after applying that mod, that the mod would get wiped out, and you'd need to re do it after flashing a different ROM, because it appears as though the xml files that get edited are within the framework-res.apk, which would get replaced when you reflash a rom, thus wiping out the mod. Is that correct? If so, my questions is, does anyone know what I actually modified when I followed the method that I did, and why the mod remains no matter what type of changes I make to my phone? Again, it's just out of curiosity, no actual problems here. Thanks in advance, if anyone knows.
Changes the strings.xml in the framework-res.apk
I've had the mod since I received my Evo and flashed many roms and still have the mod. You would think switching between aosp and sense and what not that it would disappear. It's MAGIC.

So does JsChirf's hex edit method work the same way? As in, the mod remains no matter what you flash/wipe/change? Unless you were to repeat the mod, except editing it back to the orignal "sprint" banner? I haven't used his method, but by reading through it, it looked as though you need to edit a couple of xml files in the framework-res.apk. If that's the case, and you flash a different rom (which contains a new framework-res.apk), wouldn't you lose the mod? Or am I missing something?
And thanks for the response.

Yea I hear ya, it was just out of curiosity. I was going to use the hex edit method for my friend's Evo, just to try it out. It looks kind of fun. I was just unsure if doing it that way would cause the mod to stick, as it does with my phone. Thanks for the help though.

No the hex method works using xml files inside the framework-res.apk and htclockscreen.apk so when you change roms it will change back to sprint. This method is very simple way to do it.

Haha, so simple! The qpst thing was pretty easy too, I used it a while back. Today I just tried jschirfs hex edit method for another Xda member. That wasn't hard, but sucks that its wiped any time the framework-res.apk changes. Anyways, thanks for the responses.

I can't help but mess...

Just paid £206 for a brand new unlocked Defy on the bay. Can't wait for it to arrive! I have had a HTC Desire which i sold due to having a baby on the way (she is 6 weeks old now!) i then got a cheap Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade) and i loved it but the camera is appalling 3mp no flash.
I have been involved in theme porting for both devices and i also like to customise roms to my liking so i'm no stranger to Android. However the process for both of these phones was...
Root.
Install Clockwork Recovery or Amon Ra Recovery.
Install custom rom.
Enjoy.
Now some total noob questions in regards to the Defy...
Reading the forums it seems that due to the nature of the Defy's locked bootloader the process is nowhere near as simple as the above. What i would like to know is what is the process in a sort of bullet point form? I can read up for each step.
I'd also like to take a Defy Froyo rom and add apps and remove apps etc to my liking...possibly make some mods to framework-res.apk and services.jar. How easy is that? Previously it was extract zip, edit, zip up and flash!
I know these are a lot of questions but this is my first Moto device and i just want to do my research...hopefully i get started on Saturday postman permitting
Thanks in advance.
Hi ephumuris,
Changing the ROM shouldn't be so difficult, at least in my case it wasn't.
1) Root phone with SuperOneClick
2) Install tenfar Clockworkmod Recovery then make a nandroid backup
3) Download and install the ROM you'd like. You'll find some here on XDA (stock or custom)
As per your other question related to modding the framework-res.apk I'll let someone more experienced on this domain to answer.
Thanks for the reply. One thing I'm not sure of is what these sbf files are?
Sent from my Blade using XDA Premium App
I don't know exactly what the SBF acronym means. It can be System Backup File or Single Binary File or maybe System Boot File. However it is a completely stock system image. You'll need RDS lite 4.9 to flash it. A good place to start looking for ROM's and steps to follow is the Defy wiki page here on XDA (link)
2nd-init is well working on defy and Quarx is working on porting CM7 to defy, nothing can be impossible.

Equivalent of ODIN for Gnex? Can't boot phone

Greetings XDA peeps,
I just purchased the Gnex last week and have loved the stock rom but felt the need for more customization (Not sure why im saying this as it is a given.. )
I found the Wugfresh Galaxy Nexus Root Toolkit v1.3 and studied how to use it and read through the post/instructions for a week until I fully understood what was going on and flashed Codename Android http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1479569
I installed my proper drivers and used device manager to get everything straightened away, and made sure fastboot and adb were recognized before doing anything ( I should probably get educated on what exactly ADB and fastboot actually mean...googling now)
Since then I haven't been able to boot my phone and have no idea how to revert back to stock or push the original contents onto my device to just simply start from square one. I know how to do it with ODIN (or I did on my SGS2 Sprint)
For the love of god someone shed some light on this situation please =] I did search btw..couldn't find what I was looking for.
Still new to this, just restored my CWM backup and my phone finally booted.
I guess I overlooked something somewhere...I never checked to see what kernel that rom required as I should still be on stock but I have to find out how to check which kernel I am on.
Im assuming the majority of roms require the stock kernel though?
