Seems I'm the only unlucky guy to use voodoo or universal lagfix kernal - Galaxy S I9000 Android Development

I struggled two days with the blooming versions of JP6/JPM kernal without success. So I have to think I am the only unlucky guy in this forum.
Before the voodoo froyo support come out, I was using JPM with CF-lagfix 1.9, no any problem. After voodoo 5 pre 4 released, I tried to apply it. Then the painful struggling started.
Here are the approaches I did:
Approach A: Uninstall the CF-Lagfix through PC tool, then flashed the voodoo 5 pre 4 kernal through Odin. After reboot, stuck at S logo with vibration a few times, then screen went to blank but still periodical vibration. Reboot again and did factory reset. Same.
Approach B: Flash back stock JP6, rooted with CF-Root, then repeat approach A but repeat the problem.
Approach C:
Step 1: Flash a stock 2.1 ROM ZSJH1(Hong Kong version)
Step 2: Flash a Froyo stock version DXJP1 for Asia (if I flash JP6 directly onto a 2.1 ROM, I got the error message : Can't mount /dev/block/st110)
Step 3: Flash the stock JP6.
Step 4: Rooted with CF-Root.
Step 5: Flash the "universal lagfix kernal alpha 1" kernal, in lagfix option, I choose voodoo, then the recovery show clearly steps of backup/unmount/creat/restore... without any error message. After that, phone rebooted automatically. Still stuck.
Step 6: Did factory reset, no help.
Step 7: Reboot into recovery, disable the lagfix and reboot, same problem.
Approach D:
Repeat Steps 2-4 as C, apply the Doc'Mod barebone version zip file in SD card through CWM, after rebooted, goto recovery and apply voodoo lagfix. Result same. Did factory reset before and after, didn't work.
Approach E:
Repeat steps 2-4 as C, apply Darky's Raw Steel Edition 2.2 from SD card. The phone booted, but it's very laggy, even worse than the stock JP6 without lagfix. Then I put "disable-lagfix" folder inside the voodoo folder in SD card, reboot, system refused boot-up but stuck again.
Now I have to go back to the newest Hong Kong version ZSJP8 with OCLF. System runs very smooth.
Anyhow, since I feel I am quite familiar with Android system flashing (I used Milestone a few months, flashed the different ROM more than 50 times, and N1 one month also flashed many times the customized ROM. Even for SGS, also more than 20 times to try the new versions), this is the first time I face so weired problem. I still would like to give a try for the new kernals, but I really need to know the reasons behind. I searched the forum, seems I am the only guy to have such difficulties.
Sorry for my English as I am a Chinese, but any comments are very appreciated.

Flashing custom kernels can be hit and miss for certain devices - possibly because of hardware differences between regions or something strange. You're not the only one.
An option you can try though is to patch your own region's stock kernel with z4mod. No guarantees, but it's something you can try.
Online patcher available here: http://www.sgscompilebox.dreamhosters.com/
(Still alpha)

Thank you first for your great work for those easy tools for root, lagfix.
My phone was bought in Hong Kong, and many mates surround me (in China) are same, but everybody then claim the succeed to apply voodoo onto JPM/JP6. So far the only working lagfix method for my phone is OCLF.
Regarding the different method, what's your opinion regarding the Ext2 and Ext4, are they really behave so noticeable difference? Your opinion will determine my next try

EXT2 is faster, EXT4 is safer when pulling the battery out of your phone. Personal preference - z4mod supports both anyway, as long as the kernel supports it. The main difference is that z4mod uses your stock kernel, but if others who have the same device don't have the issue it might be something else. Maybe give your phone to them, and ask them to sort it out for you!

Politeness

Totally off topic, but I must say, as a CBC (Canadian Born Chinese) who doesn't speak any Chinese, it was very very polite and nice for you to say this. This sort of good, polite, attitude is very much appreciated, and you don't see it very often in North America The forums here on XDA are, for the most part, very good...but on other websites, can degenerate into absolute inhumane rudeness.

hello, i bought my i9000 from shenzhen (via taobao store) so it is propably hongkong device as yours ( firmware was zsjf7), i flashed zsjp4 (froyo) and wa laggish even with oclf. then later i flashd jpa ( i needed arabic) and applied z4mod but failed . and finally i applied ultimate kernel lagfix (overkill). worked well for me . didn't try voodoo though.
you might try options other than voodoo .

Most likely your device has different hardware. For example brazilian variant of galaxy s is still unsuported. And there were some different types of vibrant (with larger storage).
You might want to write to curio, he might provide you with some help on how to test your device.

looks like many chinese guy here.
I use the chinese version jpm and with voodoo working well.
So may be your unlucky thing is caused by the hongkong rom?

Ok, now I see. I tried one time of z4mod online patch but failed so I didn't try it again. And I found the English always bring me trouble to describe my meaning, actually the mates I mentioned are those we know each other in Chinese forum, but we never meet each other in reality world. So I have no chance to ask them do it for me. And personally, I like to do anything by my understanding then do it by myself. I decided to try one more time of the hottest Universal Lagfix, but I must uninstall your great OCLF first, am I right? if it still get failed, I will say bye-bye to others method forever but stick with your OCLF.
BTW, since Ext2 is faster, and most of the using is regarding the /data partition read/write, does it mean that I can't expect "big" difference between the OCLF and total Non-RFS solution? If so, maybe I should stop to try again.

It doesn't matter to me to off topic, and also I am glad to know a new word: CBC
Chinese have a very traditional saying: Guest must follow host (the meaning, but I don't know how to translate it into English properly), but it's sad to see less and less young guys in China buy it in....You can feel it in most of Chinese forums if you can read Chinese. So we need do much more than economic development. Anyhow, since it's off topic, we could discuss it further through other channels if you like so.

Thanks for your input, I will give a try later according to your recommendation.

To the OP, you are not alone.
I have two galaxy S phone with me.
One is i9000M from Bell Canada and one is i9000T from south America.
Both can use the OCLF fix but only the i9000M can use the voodoo fix.
I have tried everything possible to get voodoo working on the i9000T with JPM but it just fails to install.
The devices are identical and both can run JPM / JP6 or any other i9000 ROM just fine.
I really don't know what voodoo wont run on the i9000T and i could not get any help from the developer on this matter.

New Asian Froyo I9000ZSJP3 and root

Hi Folks, downloaded from samfirmware.com (http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i9000.htm)
All thanks to samfirmware.com (hope they fix the links to correctly point to samfirmware.com rather than samfirmware-web.com).
Trying to flash. I would really appreciate if someone could share the kernel as when I tried to create a .tar file, didn't work for me.
If someone could help in creating the tar for the kernel, I can share the same.
In the meantime trying jpc kernel after root on this rom.
Thanks for keeping forum.xda-developers.com rocking.
Quadrant 1004 on stock. Looks smooth and much faster than JPC. Installing lagfix 2.3.3 update.zip
To Summarize:
I find this to be one of the best Froyo builds. Fixes some of the problems I had on JPC.
Exchange email integration seems buggy
GPS still needs to be tested
Build is from 08.2010
Root: http://hotfile.com/dl/68975058/295f167/I9000ZSJP3_Root.zip.html
Not significantly different from JPC and ZSJP2. So if you are happy with JPC, you are not really missing anything significant.
I am back to JPC as JP3 seems to be having a strange issue of increasing CPU utilization in idle! Also, the build date seems to be older than JPC.
you need to use GNU tar (or just make it from linux) doesntwork with eg 7zip
in case u can't make it easily here it is (i already removedthisjp3 tho it doesnt work very goodfor me)
http://www.multiupload.com/NPWZNFE6KX
ps:use the i9000 kernel + update.zip froyo root with this!

WOW, thanks for the quick reply! What were the issues? How did you find it as compared to JPC?
EDIT: Your kernel doesn't work for me. Crashes at the first boot screen (tried after removing USB), however JPC kernel seems to work after root
it doesnt have all the new jpc stuff for starters, it's the old buttons and so on (i suppose its like the HKJP2 but i didnt look much more deeply)
then it started to freeze around a bit (prolly not more than jpc but still it annoys me) - ofc that's with lagfix on both.then titaniumbackup failed to restore many apps which worked for restore on jpc and hkjp2 so i gave up lol
so while i was at it i just went back to 2.1
is this full froyo or just partial like the last releases!?!?!?!
similar to previous releases at least
just look at build dates anyway. all that stuff is from august..
there'sJI2 or something like that from september for vibrant which seems really nice. 2.1 but has all the new froyo stuff from samsung (just no new JIT etc)

Please define "partial release". I see all the ROMs to be "full" like the official ones (these are alpha or beta versions at max, but have become much stable then the July Froyo builds).
"my" kernel is just SZJP3 ;p
u can untar it from their archive and tar it back it's what i did. just use GNU tar or odin will fail.
what languages are included ?
So anyone has the Kernel for this one?

english, korean, chinese
Noticed ZSJP3 in samfirmware that is using PIT 512 instead of 803, as ZSJP2, JPC all using 803.
Wonder any error on it.
Anyone has direct link from Samsung FUS server..as the download speed from there is much faster(> 1.5MBytes per sec).. of course ..providing the encryption key will be +++.
Hows the battery performance?

We need this this file:ZSJP3_Rootcan somebody downloading from kingmobi?
Downloading now-very slowly
I Flashed ZSJP3 - but My Exchange reply is not working. if i reply to the email message the receiver will not get my reply. Just receive blank email.
is there any work around solution for this problem? same exist on JPC and ZSJP2
still the same issue (like ZSJP2), once exchange sync start, the phone halted.

sadly, the moto launcher is still here, in fact i think this is not a true deblured firmware, but a much lighter one.
Read this - this isnt the vanilla android you were expecting!
Guys I have flashed this and compared to the previous firmware in the system app / framework department, and basically the only differences are the Blur social networking services have been removed and in there place there is a facebook (albeit an old version) and myspace, ohg a kindle ebook reader.)
The apps removed are:
FriendFeed
megamaid
newswidget
socialmessaging
socialshare
statuswidget
I seriously wouldnt bother flashing it - I have restored my back up.

this is probably true, i was trying to figure out what the differences are between this central europe "deblured" firm and the UK firm, and as far as i know there are also a useless greek keyboard, some icons changed, and the android logo at booting instead of the blur one.

I already said (not sure in which thread coz there about 3 or 4 on .the same topic). if someone provides me a dump of system/app + system/framework from this rom I will deodex and create an update.zip to apply JIT. I don't use this ROM so I'm not going to install it to get these files, but if someone gets the dump I will be more than happy to create a package for you all.
By dumping you mean a backup made using tenfars recovery I presume. I would have to install that first ?

[request]Searching a HowTo for Skinning Swype

Hi,
Today my Defy arrived
Now I have read many threads about the phone and the firmware, but soneones making me confused and other ones doesnt answer my questtions.
So, what I want to know is:
1. Wich is the really latest firmware for the Defy with the red lense? Done
2. when Im going to install CM7, must be flashed an stock froyo rom before? Done
3. because swype is preinstalled in the firmware, how can i update it to the latest version? Done
4. how can i make my own swype theme?
I think thats all (for now )
Greetings
I'll only answer to the ones that I know the answer...
2. The instructions say that you should. Also, from what I read, every tutorial says that you should go to stock. Also, a wipe could be advisable (not to inherit problems and bad settings from the previous ROM)
3. You can get it from the official site. As far as I've noticed CM7 doesn't come with Swype.
Hopefully someone else answers the other two questions.
Have a nice day!
And I'll take the opportunity to ask a few somewhat related noobie questions:

I've seen a few mentions of different lens colours. What is this? (link to explanation is fine) ETA: Found it myself. Really stupid to ask. Bottom line ATM seems to be that for phones recently manufactured the lens colour is not a reliable indicator of camera module used.

Doesn't this mean that you don't need to do anything special (maybe wipe everything, but maybe not that important?) when you flash a new ROM into the phone for the first time?
Or would you still need to first flash a plain stock ROM if your phone came with some telco-provided crappy stuff in the ROM, before flashing a custom ROM?
(Purely hypothetical question for me.)
Bumping this, because I am getting to closer to actually start rooting around (hah!) in the innards of my phone, and I keep wondering about this:

So do I need to flash _another_ stock ROM before I switch to cyanogen or whatever, if my phone is a virgin that came with the stock nordic rom (moto_version.34.177.5.MB525.retail.en.ND/jorem_U3_3.4.2_177-5)?
It somehow seems redundant to me to flash another stock to my phone when I already have a stock froyo (without blur even) on it.
BTW, given the focus of this forum you are all being very very kind to us noobs. Upthread I asked a really really really stupid question (I'll see if I can edit out), and nobody threw rocks at me .
I am still wondering though whether anyone can recommend an alternative forum more suited to Really Basic Questions?
Just root, install second init for recovery, then flash cyanogen...
If you click devices at their website, you can grab the latest nightly ROM, and you will also find the wiki, which has a step by step on how to do everything.
It's really simple, just keep glued too the instructions.
Good luck

Edit:
To answer your question,
You should probably check with Swype to see if skinning is even capable with their app... (or potentially even allowed)
To my knowledge, skinning Swype is uncharted territory...the app is in beta still.
Some advanced knowledge of Android would be required to hack, disassemble, and recompile any themes for it.

[Q] ICS on A101 AS WELL ?

Hello guys,
I'm new to this forum but I read it from time to time since a few months.
I own an Iconia Tab A101 that I already rooted and so far I haven't received the OTA update toward ICS probably beacuse I used a Stock Rom from Vache which is not a full stock rom.
I already found few ICS ROMs but as I use this tablet for my job, I don't want to mess up with it. So far it dosen't say it would work with an Iconia A101, but only a A100. Did anyone already tried it on the A101 ? (I can't aford to lose my 3G conection/driver as I use it everyday to send my jobs forms)
Is there any way I could upgrade toward ICS without losing my applications and datas ? (I can handle the root and adhoc/wpasuplicant issue later..)
I wish I could install/use Nandroid to get a full backup of my tablet before just in case.... Would you advise me to use that application ? How do I do that ?
I alreadytried to install CWM but failed to it. I probably did something wrong or in the wrong order.
Anyway thanks for your help ! I love this forum.
Best regards
Fabien

Acer didn't release ICS for A101 yet, so it's normal that you didn't receive OTA upgrade.
There is a leak of an old ICS build for A101 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25561591&postcount=6
I'm running it and it works fine. I just needed to delete and recreate APN, as the migrated one was disabled for some reason.
(P.S. You need to install all four update.zip from the archive in order. These are incremental and you cannot skip any.)
Thank you leomatt & smokku for you quick and clear answers. That's the spirit!
Thanks again,
Adrian
Thank you so much ! It worked like a charm.
Next step will be root (again), and adhoc support.
This may help:
1.Load Update1.zip onta a SD card. Rename it Update.zip. THIS IS IMPORTANT!
2. Press POWER and VOL- (the top vol button) and flash the ROM. The reboot will hang. Just power off and continue.
3. Repeat for the remaining updates, one at a time.
4. The final reboot will work and the ROM will be flashed. If error messages are encountered or constant rebooting is experienced, do a factory restart.
This worked for me and restored my Acer back to A101. (I had loaded ICS for A100 and lost 3g...I can't help fiddling with things I don't understand........

Hey. No need to thank me for telling you it even existed in the first place, that's perfectly OK.
For someone so utterly incapable of finding something so simple (seriously, third hit on a search), I suggest you don't even THINK about flashing it; you'll brick your tab.
Someday you'll get, that this forum is about people helping each other, not feeling superior to others.

Insulting people is a bad habit. Some day you will find out why!
Details ?

i about an OFFICIAL rom, not a stock rom modified, or a leaked one, etc..
It would be great if you guys could CLEARLY say what is made for ?
If it's for A100, its for A100, A101 for A101, etc... as well as for which kind of rom it is made for, etc ?
For someone who is used to it, it's easy ! However, even for a newbie there is nothing about Android terminology ! The poor guy is lost and nothing makes sense to him/her.
For example : ROM means Read Only Memory (as oposed to Ram which is Random Access Memory (volatile memory) ) right !!!
Well if the ROM is the operating system, then you don't only read it as you also write in it and can replace its content as well ! However, Android (the os) is a ROM !! Even for someone coming from the IT world, it's kind of confusing ! ;-)
By the way, it says not to install Busybox, but I had to, after to fix some apps.
The wpa_suplicant file however doesn't fix the adhoc issue so far.
I'll get back to the old file in the meantime.

I didn't insult anyone, but I can, if you like.

[Q] p607t Are any of these lte roms compatible?

I have a tmo note 10.1 2014. Are any of these lte roms compatible at all??
Why yes they are I'm running xKat 5.0, SE permissive stock kernel, and TWRP (and have been since the night I got that tablet a week or so ago). SO glad that T-Mobile is carrying this hardware, AND that they're generally cool with rooting / modding etc. I even told the guy at the Tmo store my "policy" that I WILL NOT buy (well, much more trade in this case :good: ) any device that has arbitrary restrictions preventing me from gaining root (i.e. the ability to administer my own device.) He was ridiculously cool... even told me he was pretty sure it was cool if I flashed custom firmware on my new completely gratis "cellspot" router if I restored it to stock before I returned it (or likely will end up buying). SO glad Tmo is making all of these pro-consumer moves... and also that it seems to be working out for them so well (not to mention, their customers)!
I've read some of your posts around here. You mention removing a few files before flashing. Did you? If so, can share with me what/how you did?

No, I didn't... as you've probably noticed, info re: the entire process of root, recovery, custom ROM is kind of spread out around the forum. I thought that might be necessary because I recalled reading something about having to do that to flash a p605 ROM on a p607t (might have pertained to a specific ROM or something), but I asked specifically in the xKat thread to make sure and found it (well, first by just trying it - then took a look at the thread mid flash and saw that someone had responded :good that the xKat zip can be flashed as-is. Select any options you'd like in the Aroma installer and you're good to go! (You do need to flash an additional file after at least one reboot - otherwise you'll need to enter your wifi pass after each reboot... it's the OP of the ROM thread).
I can only say for certain that xKat w/ SE permissive kernel works great on the 607t... I think any p605 ROM can actually just be flashed without modification (hopefully someone will chime in and correct me if that isn't true - I think the info about modifying zips was just speculation, but was found not to actually be the case). Just make sure to make a nandroid of the stock ROM before flashing
How are you liking the new tablet? Loving it here! I hope now the T-mobile is selling it (by far the best of their Android tablets), this device will gain back some popularity that it lost from the TabPro release a few months later. Perhaps the forum will liven up a bit
I absolutely love this tablet. Im coming from a Nexus 10 and although they share the same screen resolution, this one is much faster, sleeker, brighter, and I'm loving the S pen. I had it rooted ten minutes after i brought it home. I've also recovered from a soft brick after having flashed the wrong twrp. Woops! Ive been dying to try different rom on this bad boy, hence all the questions for you. I'm gonna give xkat a go here. I'll report back to you with my results!

Nice man! Feel free to PM me if you get stuck anywhere along the way
BTW: Something I just learned, even if you select the SE permissive kernel, your kernel will be enforcing unless you manually change it, either via terminal or that SElinux Changer app (forgot exactly what it's called). I had been confused re: why in "About device" it said that the kernel was SE enforcing even though I installed the permissive one. Just FYI
Does spen work on xkat anybody revert successfully and gain the function back?
