[Q] HELP - I think I bricked my Epic - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Help - I have been trying to get back to the stock rom load ever since I used the update.zap to get 2.2.1. I have trouble getting my XP system to see the Epic in download mode. Well today it saw it so I tried using the software in Odin3+v1.61andepic.pit.zip. It failed once and then it looked like it worked (I think) but when I tried to power it up I got phone symbol connected to symbol with a ! in it connected to a symbol of a pc. Now I get the message on the pc that the device is not recognized.
Where do I go from here??????
If I can ever get the PC to see the phone, what files do I need to fix it.
Thanks for any help
George MacDonald

Ok, am assuming you have the following...
SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5
20100512.pit (I have never used the 528.pit file to flash DI18 back on to the phone, only the 512.pit file, which is why I listed it here)
I am going to assume the newer v1.61 of Odin which you have will work ok with the above pit file, but it is only an assumption.
(Listing all steps just for the sake of having it all together, not trying to imply you were doing anything incorrectly)
Pull the battery from your phone and restart your computer. When it is all booted up, start odin and load the .tar.md5 (PDA section) and .pit (the PIT section) files into their respective places. Also make sure that only 'Reboot' is checked.
Next, insert the battery into your phone and boot into download mode (keyboard '1' + the 'Power' button). After it has entered 'Download' mode, then connect your phone to the computer with the usb cable. You should now see a COM port in Odin, if you dont, you need to try a different USB cable or port and try again until you do. If you have exhausted your available options with possible USB cables/ports, you may want to try uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers and trying again (if somehow you installed kies, I recall reading that at least one other person had an issue with it being installed, so try uninstalling that too).
As soon as your phone is recognized by Odin, hit the Start button and wait for it to finish. If it fails, pull the battery of your phone, close Odin, restart phone and Odin, and try, try again (following the same steps as above).
Addition: If your still having issues getting your device recognized, you can try 'uninstalling' the Epic or any 'Unknown Hardware' (have to make sure the phone is connected to do this) from the Device Manager in Windows, just make sure you also click the box to 'Delete the driver software for this device' if possible. When you have removed the Epic from the Device Manager, unplug your phone, reinstall the drivers, then plug your phone back in to see if it loads the correct drivers and recognizes it. When in download mode, the items in the Device Manager will be 'Modems->SAMSUNG Mobile Modem' and 'Universal Serial Bus controllers->SAMSUNG USB Composite Device'

+1 on the procedure...I thought I was bricked the first time I couldnt power up,just pull the battery. Now Ive seen this about 6 times, but I flashed back ti stock more then 100 times.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Tried on another computer
Well I found another computer to try. I found the Epic OK. Did the download as described above. Download failed.
I will try the above again tomorrow as I won't be able to get to the other computer until then.
Thanks for any help
George MacDonald

Good News
Well finally some good news. I got it to work this morning. Went back and redownloaded all the files. Uninstalled the drivers on my computer. Borrowed the cable from my wife's Samsung. Put the original battery back in my Epic. Then I tried again. Work just like I was told it should.
I think that the two I had used before are bad. It looked like it would try to start and then the connection would be broken.
Now all I have to do is rebuild the system (the dumps I had taken are missing things like email accounts.
Thanks all for the help
George

Pull battery for 5 minutes, hold 1 + power WHILE inserting battery. Also, are you sure there is a charge on the battery?

Can't get into recovery mode

I flashed JG5, updated to modaco's r3 and then tried to flash mimocan's stall fix which killed my phone (progress bar stayed on 0 and phone went black).
Now I've reflashed JG5 and cannot get into recovery mode.
VolumeUP+Home+Power just starts up the phone as normal ( I have tried multiple times)
VolumeDOWN+Home+Power still gets me into download mode.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Managed to reboot into recovery through adb.
I have the same problem here.
I can enter in recoery mode only with abd or reboot widget ...
Anybody else ? volume up + home + power doesn't semm to work ...
EDIT : the pb occured when I flashed the JG5, and I have the same problem in JM1 and JM2 !
EDIT 2 : I manage to acces to recovery mode.
I pressed volume up + power + home and when the i9000 logo appeared I released power !!
i've had a bad flash with latest firmware, odin became stuck at "do not power off"
now i get the "cannot connect" icon and the device isn't detected when i plug in the usb cable.
i've installed both kies and usb drivers, but still nothing.
any ideas?
i actually get a com 7 usb serial port driver but the device isn't detected by odin. the drivers installed are default from microsoft.
10x.
Had this issue myself.
I disconnected everything. Restarted the computer.
Opened the back of the phone and removed the microsd card, sim and battery.
Put the battery back in. Placed the phone in download mode.
Started ODIN and entered all the files then connected the phone to the computer and flashed as per normal.

Exactly that!
If you don't get into recovery mode by pressing volup+home+power, you are just pressing them too long or short or alternatively didn't turn off the phone before trying it (not necessary but makes it a lot easier)

I found I had to do it a couple of times to get it to work as well.
Just have to keep at it. Maybe my old fingers are not clicking at the same time.
Cant get me Gt-9000I into recovery mode & cant on usb debugging because pattern lock.
I've got an old GT-9000I which cant get into recovery mode with button combinations. The bad thing is phone is stuck in pattern lock as well. I forgot my pattern and phone is showing email verification for unlocking device which is also not working.
Is there anyway I can flash my device with altering some circuitry or applying anything.

[Q] What does it mean when ODIN MODE boots up into "Downloading..."

I have a Tab 3 8.0 which I've done various installs with, and am trying to get back to stock.
But I can't, because when I enter recovery (power + down), ODIN MODE comes up with
Current Binary: Custom
Current Status: Custom
Downloading...
Do not turn off target !!
I've tried flashing stock firmware, other firmware, stock kernel etc.
I've read the process for going back to stock in the Tab 3 8.0 forum, but i think Odin (on PC) is failing because of the "Download..." state on the device.
(Also, when I try to run Kies it just continuously tries to connect to the device without success. The device will show up as media device in Win 7.)

Why go back?
There are many costomed stock Roms in the development thread.
Download one of them ,then flash via recovery.
If (or when) you press "V-down + power" and the screen image you have appears, then the device is ready for a download. If you go no further than that, you have booted into download mode. Nothing else. It will just sit there until you either reboot (hold power button down until display goes blank) or connect your device to your PC and download your OEM ROM.
Now, if (or when) you connect your PC and start ODIN's ROM download process, do not remove the USB cable, power off either the PC or the device, or you will end up doing serious (firmware) harm to your device.

If that's the case, then I must have something wrong on the PC end now. ODIN ( on PC ) refuses to 'see' it as does KIES.
However, if I just plug it in without either of those programs running, it does show up in File Explorer and I can browse the folders on the device.
If this were I having this problem, I would download the ODIN 3.07 again and use this new version. I would also reload my USB drivers. At least that would equalize everything with a fresh install. I would also go into TWRP and restore your last backup (that is if you have done a backup).
I have this old saying that got stuck in my head a long time ago; if it worked once, it will work again. Just be persistent and follow a methodical plan to get yourself back up and running.
So, I had Philz Touch as the recovery - I installed the latest TWRP, then re-installed the stock firmware.
DownloadMode now no longer shows the text in the upper left (ODIN MODE/product/current/system).
1. If i boot the tablet all the way into android, then boot Odin, it will see the tablet and give it an ID (but I can't flash a firmware from here.)
2. If i boot the tablet into download mode, then boot Odin, Odin will *not* see the tablet.

So just trying to understand your process...
1. You power up the device with power + vdown to enter download mode. Is that correct?
2. If 1 is correct then you see "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!" and in the upper left you see ODIN MODE, or words to that effect?
3. If 1 & 2 are correct, you then connect the USB cable to your device and then connect to the PC.
4. Next you RIGHT CLICK on ODIN 3.0x and select "Run as administrator". (Assuming Windows based PC)
5. In ODIN, do you see ID:COM 0:[COMx] where x is a COM port? The box should be a blue color. In the Message box should be <ID:0/00x> Added!! where x equals the COM port.
Is this what you have when #2 of your post is done? As for #1, if you boot into Android, I do not believe you can really do anything with ODIN. I just booted my P5210 into normal operating and connect to my PC. I have access to the storage so I can move files to/from the device. I then started ODIN and get the same as step 5 above, but I am sure I cannot download anything. I did not take it any further that just opening ODIN.

Previously, with Philz Touch + "stock kernel" I saw ODIN MODE ( the screen capture in my first post. )
Now, after installing TWRP + "stock kernel", I do not see ODIN MODE, I just see the Downloading... Do not turn off target.
OK... at this point I must throw in the towel. I see you are using Philz Touch which I have no idea what that is other than a "special" recovery. Plus you indicate "stock kernel" which I take to mean OEM ROM.
Sorry I can't help anymore. Gave it a college effort.

Thanks man... I've been fumbling with trying to return stock for awhile now.
I still think it is a USB driver issue. I don't think you need USB drivers to see the device as a USB external drive. I know I plug in and I go straight to the file system so I can move files to/from the Download folder and to/from the TWRP folder.
I go to Computer Management on my PC and when I plug in my device, I see the following two items appear
Modems - Samsung Mobile USB Modem
Portable Devices - My P5210 (this is where you will find the driver details)
Then, under Universal Serial Bus controllers I see the following - SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Devices
I am just still thinking about this, but I still am leaning toward USB drivers for your device on the PC.
I'm digging what you're saying re: drivers... it makes the most sense since during download mode, it wouldn't be seen as a multimedia devicee.
This is what I see when plugging it in - while i'm running the system. (i.e., not recovery or download.)
And under the Portable Devices you double-clicked SM-T310 to reveal the drivers? Can you delete the drivers and then reinstall them?
And as a last resort, I hope you have a restoration file you can download into TWRP folder so you can restore back to your last known good state. Hope being the operative word. Some times I forget to do a backup before playing and end up having to restore from an older backup.

Sprint LG G2 Brick - Not showing in device manager - Download mode working!

Hey guys, my friend recently bought an LG G2 on Sprint, but switched carriers to T-Mobile. He rooted his phone successfully, and tried to install custom recovery but downloaded some app that screwed up his phone (not completely sure what happened... he told me he installed a flashing app that flashed recovery but long story short, his phone is in a boot loop.) I can access download mode, and fastboot. When I connect the phone to the computer, my Windows 8.1 Laptop, nothing pops up. I already installed ADB and Fastboot, and when I put the phone into fastboot mode and plug it into the computer, it is recognized but keeps saying "oops!" connection to USB failed trying again.... fastboot ready! etc. etc. I installed the LG Flash tool but the computer won't recognize my device in device manager! I'm really frustrated why it won't recognize it. It shows nothing except ACER Fastboot Device. I just want it to recognize it in download mode so i can flash it back to stock with the LG Flash tool.
Pls halp.
I had to download lg universal drivers for my laptop to recognize my phone in download mode give that a try
im in the same boat as the op. i have tried to install various drivers. im able to get into download mode but no communication with the comp. i try going to recovery but it is gonna and i see some type of fastboot. unsure where to go from here...
This is exactly what i did

does the computer make a noise when you plug in the device? Also are you sure your in download mode ? (not just the dots) If you have just the dots, then go info fastboot mode and flash both the boot.img and laf.img then reboot into download mode and see if it works
I just put my g2 in download mode and pluged her up. in device manager it poped up under lge android modem, in the modem section of device manager.
Look there first. Then you will have to change the port to 41 so the flash tool will work
If you have qpst it will Tell you what port

what i had to do when this happened to me, was swap out the device at sprint (had insurance), without insurance you can swap it for $75ish plus tax or if its still under warranty, go through LG

[Q] Battery went to 0% now stuck on firmware update screen LG G3 (D855)

Hi!
I would need some help with my LG G3.
Last night my phone went to 0% battery because I didn't put it onto the charger. Before it was working fine, I didn't make any modifications to it.
This morning I plugged it into the charger (so not into a computer), and it shows a screen: " Firmware update. Do not unplug the USB connection until the process is complete*. 0% (it hasn't moved since). There is also a box on the bottom saying: 910K B1. It is a European 16GB model.
It doesn't respond when I press the on/off button. Should I try removing the battery?
I haven't touched it since I put it onto the charger because I don't want to damage it or something, so I would be very grateful for any help.
Thanks.
My guess would be that there was some kind of flashing program running on your computer. The program rebooted your phone into download mode and is now trying to flash a file onto your G3. If you unplugged your phone fast enough you could just try rebooting, otherwise there is a possibility the program already prepared to flash the file onto your phone and now you have a 910K B1 (??) firmware on your phone.
If your phone isn't booting anymore I suggest flashing the right kdz/tot file on your phone. Good luck.

The only way out of download mode seems to be pulling the battery, so that should be okay. It sounds like you just accidentally held Volume Up when you plugged it up and tricked it into download mode so hopefully a battery pull will reset it. Let me know if the issue persists after a battery pull. If that's the case, it may need to be restored to stock.

Oh darn yeah, I read "into a computer". Disregard my message indeed.
OP also states that the bottom reads "bottom saying: 910K B1". I don't have my phone on me right now, but doesn't Download Mode state nothing at the bottom? Only when you use a flashing tool? I could be wrong though.
Thank you, pulling the battery helped, at first it didn't recognise the sd but taking it out and putting it back helped.
It seems to work fine now. And by the way sorry, I just had a pretty rough night out and was a bit scared of what could have happened to my phone
If anything unusual happens I'll keep you updated but really thank you
Ok so, everything works fine except when I plug it into my computer it doesn't recognise the phone anymore, it just says unknown device.
I tried installing the driver and LG PC Suite, neither of them helped.
The usual options on the phone doesn't appear (media share, charging only), it is simply just charging.
Hey so I have had the exact same problem as listed above except when I pull my battery out and tried leaving it out for a minute or two then putting it back and it's just bringing me back to being stuck on the firmware screen. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Hold down the volume up button when turning on for a few seconds, worked for me
firmware update... do not unplug.. i did not unplug for 5 hrs and still at 0% on downloading.
this is a small lg phone w no way i can tell how to pull battery
Another Resolution...
Hi, I have decided to add another resolution you can do if none of the above resolutions work (like they didn't for me).
Some other sites suggest you should factory reset your phone, however I do not suggest this unless nothing else works.
What worked for me was just holding down the power and volume down button and quickly pressing it again when the LG Logo pops up, and instead of saying yes to factory reset, just put no and the phone should then boot up as usual without the firmware update.
Hope this helps
My LG GadF8.0 does the same thing...but sadly It has a non-removable battery. So what do I do then?

Try unplugging your phone then turning on.
did we figure the normality of the 901K B1 -- asking because of the "901K B7" on my phone (after a few previously sketchy occurrences & me having it on charger not having held volume up). Thanks.
Solution
Press the volume up and down button same time 3 times and it brings you to this screen and you have to press the power up and down than hold the power button for 1 or 2 seconds and release but go over to power off hold it than it says you sure hold power button on yes once off power back on
Hi I have a similar problem, despite being in the same loading mode, mine is like this after I put it on the pc What should I do to fix this?

Some other sites suggest you should factory reset your phone, however I do not suggest this unless nothing else works.
What worked for me was just holding down the power and volume down button and quickly pressing it again when the LG Logo pops up, and instead of saying yes to factory reset, just put no and the phone should then boot up as usual without the firmware update.
Hope this helps

this worked. on my lg q6+ the screen appeared on plugging into a pc on linux. this helped somewhat, as the power button itself was not responsive, but the power and vol down button combo restarted the phone promptly. i didnt take any further action, and the phone rebooted normally. thanks.

Lenovo Vibe Shot Z90A40 Cant Turn the device on after miflash completes successfully

Hi,
I am not getting Qualcomm 9008 mode even after installing and reinstalling the drivers manually or via setup
I see this under Other Devices in device manager
QHSUSB__BULK
Then I ran miflash it worked fine as per following attached screenshot:

But when I unplug device and turn it on it does not show any thing, just a long (2/3 seconds) vibration and done
So basically I cannot get any thing on my screen, Plz help me to get to recovery mode, as if I get till that point
I would be able to flash a proper stock ROM form SD Card
(I have tried the things after removing SD card as well)
it is fixed now
I resolved it, the Diagnostics 9006 mode problem happened to my device twice due to various reasons
in first attempt I was seeing a lot of read only partitions when I connected phone, it was solve using QPST/QFill
before resolving this problem I was able to go to Stock recovery almost all the times but was unable to flash
any thing from there even with the use of SD card
2nd time the problem was same, but this time I was not seeing any partitions in my Computer
actually both times the real problem was going to proper 9008 mode which I finally got to know how to do it from
following thread
http://www.androidbrick.com/lenovo-zuk-phones-qfil-roms-unbrick-guide/
I feel I shall put the text as well:
If you were on Lollipop : Phone must be completely off. Pressing Volume Up
key plug the USB cable in WITHOUT PRESSING POWER BUTTON ! Port will open.
If you were on Marshmallow : Phone must be completely off. Plug the USB cable in
and immediately press Power On button. Port will open.
Since I bricked from Marshmallow, so I used the Plug in Cable + Power button only to got
to 9008 mode and once there I knew I can make a come back, which yet came after a couple of tries
as one has to click immediately on Download button when Qfil can see 9008.
Actually I bricked my phone a whole lot of times even after my post thats because once I knew that it is just soft bricked and I can get it back somehow, I got the confidence and tried advanced things that bricked my phone again and again
And it was only the recent time (around 3 weeks ago), that I figured the 100% working 9008 method for my phone
actually u have to drain the battery completely out then it will get 9008 mode to do it u shall try turning your phone on again and again so that battery goes off
For example: Press Power button for a few seconds to turn it on.
Or press 3 buttons at same time (VOL+, VOL- and Power), then release only Power button when you get vibration. Then after 2 seconds release both VOL buttons as well (this is for going to recovery mode)
This way you can drain all battery of phone, and you will know when the battery is all gone when you will press the Power button and phone will not show any LED light or screen light, it will just vibrate and will be off
Now you connect ur phone to PC in following way:
If at bricking you you were on Lollipop (Android 5): Pressing VOL+ key and plug the USB cable in WITHOUT PRESSING POWER BUTTON ! 9008 will open use Qfil to flash the ROM u want
OR If at bricking you were on Marshmallow (Android 6): Plug the USB cable in phone, then connect cable to PC and exactly at the same time press power button (some times u dont need to press power button so try with both options). Then if you see 9008 mode in Qfil, then immediately press the Download button in Qfil
If you see Qfil error then repeat the above process to get 9008 mode and use miflash instead of Qfil miflash worked for me better than Qfil from such situation as Qfil often gives error in between
And when you get the flashing 100% then phone will either auto restart or you have to restart it manually Using Qfil it shows u message when it is restarting the phone, and I think using miflash it just says process 100% complete then u have to restart phone yourself
Remember at this point (after restart) connect your phone charger properly in a electricity power socket instead of PC as the battery was already drained so you need to charge the device while it shows the long booting process due to new ROM flashed.
Good luck,
