[Q] The most recommended and useful... - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I am new in Android and in HTC, could anybody experienced with Android make some list of the most useful applications such as to fully handle with office files, file manager, PDF reading and other ones ?
I would appreciate it a lot.
Thank you.

Quickoffice
ASTRO
Andy-83 (Ti-83 on your phone, awesome if your in college)
Bluetooth File Transfer
Dropbox (VERY handy for transferring files from pc to phone without a usb cable)
Extended Controls
GPS Status
Handcent
LauncherPro (my #1 MUST HAVE)
LED me know
ROM Manager *root*
Root Explorer *root*
Screen Off and Lock (pairs awesomely with dock swipe gestures in LauncherPro)
SetCPU *root*
SMS Backup & Restore (useful when flashing between ROMs, let's you repopulate your phones saved texts)
SMS2PC (best app EVER to let you text from a PC in a conversation window)
Speed Test
SwiftKey (best alternate keyboard in my opinion; though, I prefer the stock gingerbread keyboard)
Terminal Emulator
Titanium Backup *root*
Type Fresh *root* (to change system fonts)
Wireless ADB *root*
Long winded, I know - just went down my list for the useful apps I use all the time

Nice list, thanks a lot

As this is a question I've moved it to Q&A
Also, a few more apps for ya on top of list above:
XDA app (Premium version better)
ChompSMS (sms app)
Dolphin HD browser
aTAKEphone (dialler)
Beautiful widgets
Documents to Go
Plume (Twitter app)
PowerAmp (music app)
Timeriffic (Manage times for mute, volume on etc etc)
Sanity

Office Apps + PDF reading:
Documents To Go
QuickOffice
(either/or... I now prefer DTG because of gdocs support)
File Manager:
Root Explorer
AndroZip
Astro
All good but the first two handle archives and use file manager.

Ok, thanks I am trying them out

try also swype.

I couldn't think of a better list than what everyone else has used. If you're ever worried about losing your phone, download lookout mobile. Its got a virus scanner as well as a phone locator.

I use screenshot for screenshots, battery usage I use the built in Android process, I have no idea what total manager is, wyse pocketcloud for VNC, and quadrant and linpack for benchmarking.
Also, adfree is awesome. It's like adblock for your phone.

Battery Monitor Widget (free)= gives you up to the minute updates on how much power your phone is using (or getting, if you're charging). The widget tells you your battery life and clicking on it gives you several options on viewing exactly how fast your battery is draining.
Subsonic (one time donation of ~$10) = my favorite app ever, it sets up your computer as a server your phone can access so that you can play EVERY song you own without having to load it to your phone. I sold my iPod after getting this because, hey, I don't need it anymore. My 32GB iPod Touch is nothing compared to streaming all 300+GB of music I own. Audio Galaxy has a free version but if you haven't been keeping up with your id3 tags, you're screwed.
If you don't like the sense news widget you can get feedr. Not sure how much it costs though, it's a nice alternative and works very well. They do basically the same thing except feedr gives you more options and it's easier to find the rss feeds you want to subscribe to.
Other than that, I just use sense widgets. Hope this helps.

Not all of these are FREE, but look into them anyways.
Customization
Launcher Pro/ADW Launcher - These replace your launcher, or homescreen. They allow you to change a lot of the way the phone looks.
Widget Locker - This replaces your lockscreen, allowing you to change that like a homescreen. You can use custom unlock bars and even add widgets to your lockscreen.
Widgets
SwitchPro - This is my most used widget, its a transparent bar that allows you to turn on/off system settings. I use it for my 3G/4G Radios, Wifi, Bluetooth, and a quick button to turn my phone on vibrate and mute my media.
System Info Widget - If you look at screen-shots around here, you'll run into this widget. It monitors your Battery, Temperature, RAM, Disk Space, and free space on your SD card. Its a handy tool to check how much space you really have.
SMS Unread - This gives you an icon for Email, Messages and Phone that has a little bubble to show if you have new Email/Text/Calls. I keep it on my lockscreen, since my notification bar is hidden.
Applications
APK Installer - Install APK's downloaded from the internet. As you spend more time on XDA you'll find a ton of custom APK's, free programs, and beta releases.
Titanium Backup - This is the MUST have APP if your going to be trying new ROMS, it backs up your apps and data so you don't have to go through the tedious task of reinstalling them all.
AdFree - Removes Ad's from your phone. First thing I install personally.
Lookout - Mobile security, find your phone if lost through GPS, Wipe your phone remotely, backup all your data, and scans for malicious APK's.
Apps are a funny thing though, It's half about functionality, and half about what suits you personally. So I'd recommend you dig into the market and check out XDA to find the apps that you can't live without.
Thx for the subsonic..... trying it out shortly

Check the link in my sig, it has a big list of apps that I use.
I haven't used it in a while but I preferred Mecanto over Subsonic because it is free and actually loads your music onto their servers so you dont have to leave your computer on to listen to your tunes.
MIQLive - Cloud management app (http://miqlive.com/tour)
Dropbox - Cloud Storage
Handcent SMS - A great SMS application

I used Subsonic for sometime the only that really got to me was the fact that you had to keep your computer on all the time if you wanted access to your music library.
I recently discover Mecanto, it's free and it stores all of your music on their servers, meaning you can pull it up anytime anywhere without your computer having to be on. It's truly amazing! Many people havent heard about it but they are doing a great job. I'm not sure how long it is going to last free, so if I were you I would get it ASAP. It doesnt have all the tweaks as subsonic but the music is streamed in CD quality and it's fine.
As far as other must have apps...
Handscent
Wireless Tether
Pulse - Amazing news reader and very easily customizable
AdFree - blocks ads...lots of debate about this one...
Dolphin Browser
Dropbox - Probably the God of all other apps
Epistle - Takes notes on your phones and automatically syncs with your dropbox! I use this all the time!
Folder Organizer - If you use folders this is the app to have!
Sportacular - to keep up with sports, sends you realtime updates
Music Junk - stream and download music for free!
TV Show Stream - Watch tv shows free on your phone
Where's My Droid - God this comes in handy all the time
Zedge - download millions of ringtones and wallpapers
Wordfeud - it's scrabble, play with friends or
The best app in my opinion that streams music from your pc is audiogalaxy alot better then subsonic and its free.
Yes but audiogalaxy has a 3GB limit. Oh and your computer needs to be on as well.

These are the apps on my phone:
Google Voice - Love this app. First thing I install and set up.
LauncherPro Plus - Launcher replacement.
AndroZip Pro - For all your archive needs.
BeamReader - Best PDF viewer out there.
Better Terminal Emulator - If you're a nerd like me, the terminal is a must.
Chrome to Phone - Look things up on the computer and send links to the phone.
Digital Clock - I like being able to customize my nightstand clock.
Documents to Go - Office software.
Key Ring - For all those store club cards my girlfriend insists I use.
Pandora - For the music I don't own.
Root Explorer - Best file manager out there.
Barcode Scanner/Shopper/Shop Savvy - Really pisses off retail workers.
SME Storage - Why limit yourself to Dropbox? Use all of them, including Google!
Square - Accept payments for services using your phone.
VPlayer - Best movie player I've found so far.
WinAmp - For the music I own.
Wireless Tether - Phone as a wireless modem.
I need to check out some of these apps people have posted now...
another option for music is Musikcube. your pc does need to be on but it is also free and no size limit.
just giving options.
IPCam viewer lets you look at traffic cams in your area (if you have any). Quite nice for watching traffic or weather.

Must-Have List of applications

Dear owner of eLocity A7, we need you...
It's must-have list of applications which we can use to improve usability, ergonomics and enjoyment with tablet. There are recommendations, not orders
-----------------------------------------------------
Rules and template:
app -> reason
1. Don't add games
2. Music and video players, readers, news, social network apps are undesirable, but in extra case they can be added. This isn't contest of best app for twitter.
3. You can add alternative apps even app with same functionality exists in list already (alternative launcher for example)
-----------------------------------------------------
General
Quick Boot -> Use shortcuts 'Reboot' and 'Power Off' instead of hardware-button
CalenGoo -> [PAID] Great calendar app (thx to MagentaJoe)
Bluetooth GPS Provider -> Use a bluetooth GPS receiver with apps like Maps and many others
BlueGPS4Droid -> Use a bluetooth GPS receiver with apps like Maps and many others
QuickPic -> Great substitute for existing gallery apps that come w/ devices. its about 200k, no overly fancy 3d, and is great to use as a wallpaper picker. (thx to bestialbub)
Any Cut -> Allows you to create Home shortcuts to anything. (thx to bestialbub)
Launchers
Launcher Pro -> Replacement of standart home-launcher (standart is sluggish)
Zeam -> Replacement of standart home-launcher (thx to bestialbub)

Button Savior -> Makes virtual buttons (Simulates 'Home' 'Back' 'Search' 'Back' 'Recent Task' 'Screen Off')
BackLightKiller -> Turning off the back light also puts the device on standby. This app gets round this by setting the back light to 0.01 and forcing the machine not to switch off.
Screen Filter -> Reduce the brightness of your screen for night-time viewing
Files
Root Explorer -> [PAID] Filebrowser (requires root) - easy, light and high-functional
Ghost Commander -> File manager for the Android platform with two panels (famous Norton|Midnight|Total Commander style)

I didn't see any misspelled words in his post. Get your whining right next time. Also, yes, you are an idiot.
My contribution to the list would be CalenGoo. It's a great calendar app.
I'm curious of what others are using too. I learned about button savior on another post and it is a convenient app to have. Watching this thread with interest of the other hidden goodies I don't know about.
Another one to add to the list...
Gingerbread Keyboard.
I think it's. "Keyboard from 2.3 +" in the market. One of the best dollars I have ever spent.
There is a free one too without the plus sign, but what the hell, it's only a buck.
Awesome auto spell check too.

Not sure why people don't talk about this app...
Thumb Keyboard -> This is the best keyboard app for the Elocity in my opinion. I wrote half of my Law term paper using it.
app 2 sd
Does this app work on the A7? I tried looking up any references in the forums but couldn't find anything. I know there is a problem on the A7 with sd cards and have tried this app but cannot get it to save apps to the sd card. Even though file manager apps do see the sd card and allow access to it.
Thanks.
App 2 sd
I have this app downloaded but all I can do is clear cache or delete apps. I've never been able to move apps to the SD card either.

Free at XDA
Paid at market
Great thread, wish I had seen it earlier, autostarts a paid app now
Root Uninstaller - [FREE] Android Market - uninstalls any unneeded default apps easily.
Free Root File Manager
AndRootFile [Free] Amazon Appstore - root access file manager for read, write, delete capability
Found this at Amazon AppStore. See's SD card and any mounted device in DexMod v1.2 and gives the real space free and spaced used for my 16gig SDCard. Read, write, move, delete and everything else. Very nice GUI too.
Did not find it on Google Market.
SwiftKey
SwiftKey [Paid] Amazon and Android Market - easy keyboard that comes with auto-correct and predictive text typing.
Got this as the free app of the day on Amazon, but well worth the $1.99 it costs. It has made typing on my A7 much easier and much more enjoyable.

Your Must have apps!?

I hop from rom to rom, and always need to move my apps around ty TB. That said I like to know some apps you guys use on your evos.
XDA, swiftkey, boot manager, root explorer, xiialive (streaming audio), poweramp, sheet to go (for spreadsheets from work), adobe reader, dropbox, gosms, k9 mail... The list is actually pretty long since my phone basically mirrors the functionality of my laptop when I am not at home.
Funny you mentioned this topic, I don't use Titanium backup. Instead I backup my app on gmail through attachments, and when I install a new rom I log into my gmail account and download the apk's I need. Kinda ghetto, but it works.
The apps I find myself using are:
System Tuner Pro, terminal emulator, chainfire3D, realcalc, bluez ime, hacker's keyboard, maxthon browser, quicpic, root explorer, script manager, supersu, snes9x ex, n64oid
If I had to to live with one app for the rest of my life ... one word .. Netflix.
Since I'm using CM9 that doesn't have a built in fm it's Spirit FM radio.

I really like astro as an alternate file manager
Titanium backup, dropbox, LBE Privacy Guard, Rom Toolbox
These are some of the best ones out there right now in my opinion... (Some are paid apps but hands down worth the tiny investment )
1) CacheMate for Root Users
2) Battery Calibration
3) adbWireless
4) Gesture Search
5) Kernel Manager
6) Wave Launcher
7) Text Free
8) Wireless Tether
9) Ram Manager
10) App Protector
11) Room Toolbox
12) SD Speed Increase
13) Translate
14) Root Unistaller
15) FTP Server
MY never flash Rom's without 'em list
1) ROM Toolbox Pro
2) ROM Manager Pro
3) Solid Explorer
4) Either Maxthon or Dolphin browser w/ add-ons
5) My favorite market apps where i get the rest of whatever i find before reset and new ROM timem
Titanium backup, Quickpic, SetCPU, root explorer, astro, beautiful widgets, and apw pro widgets.
Sorry for the long list

Gtasks for android und ios
Beautiful widgets
Pure Messenger widget
Pure Kalender

I personally would recommend,
Android pro widgets (widget set with calendar,... highly customizable),
beautiful widgets (widget set with many clock widgets and loads of themes),
tasker (root needed) (make jobs at time, place or any other condition like app starts [turn on wifi,...]),
titanium backup (root needed) (app and data backups),
gta3(^^),
chrome beta (chrome for phone with direct synchronization of bookmarks, open tabs,... to desktop chrome),
ultimate call screen (fullscreen hd callscreen replacement),
ttorrent (torrent client),
solid explorer (pretty nice tabbed file explorer),
swype beta (keyboard where you can draw the words over the keyboard instead of typing them)
and everything from chainfire what is usable for our device (root needed)^^
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9300 mit Tapatalk 2
1. onenote - note taking app.. notes, memos etc.. syncs online and onto your computer. apps are available on the iOS too
2. double twist player (for itunes syncing.. I guess you'd need that if you are coming from an iphone)
3. ES file explorer - just a file explorer but capable of lots of other things once you root your phone
4. Swiftkey - keyboard that predicts your next word when typing.. pretty good and can save you time
Fancy widgets is better IMO than beautiful widgets. Nicer clocks styles.
Simple Calendar widget. Activate 4x2, multi skin to get loads of lines for diary entries, then shrink back to 4x1 to save space.
Pocket
S Baro - free from Samsung on More services
Amazon Kindle
BBC Iplayer.
Shaman, shop savvy
Zite
Google Sky Map
Amazon, amazon mp3
eBay
PayPal
Syrious scramble - great word game
Light Flow, cant stress enough on that one. Fully utilizes SIII's LED for notification.
NOVA 3..
s3 runs it smooth..
(i don't own 1 though) just sayin lolz

It's all very well ripping this post, and he could have phrased it better, but the guy has a point. There are no such thing as "must have" apps. It depends what you like/want and is entirely subjective. So you'd do just as well looking at the list of top apps on the Play Store (where you effectively get the recommendations of millions) as you would reading the opinions of those who post on this thread.
