Your Must have apps!? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hop from rom to rom, and always need to move my apps around ty TB. That said I like to know some apps you guys use on your evos.

XDA, swiftkey, boot manager, root explorer, xiialive (streaming audio), poweramp, sheet to go (for spreadsheets from work), adobe reader, dropbox, gosms, k9 mail... The list is actually pretty long since my phone basically mirrors the functionality of my laptop when I am not at home.

Funny you mentioned this topic, I don't use Titanium backup. Instead I backup my app on gmail through attachments, and when I install a new rom I log into my gmail account and download the apk's I need. Kinda ghetto, but it works.
The apps I find myself using are:
System Tuner Pro, terminal emulator, chainfire3D, realcalc, bluez ime, hacker's keyboard, maxthon browser, quicpic, root explorer, script manager, supersu, snes9x ex, n64oid

If I had to to live with one app for the rest of my life ... one word .. Netflix.

Since I'm using CM9 that doesn't have a built in fm it's Spirit FM radio.

Setcpu, root explorer, TB, phonemypc, go sms pro, dropbox, speedtest, tapatalk/xda

I hear ya! If only my internet speed was faster. I've never heard of xiialive, is it more of like vlc?
Gosms have not tried. And k9mail is alright when I tried it last. Thank you for the response.

Haha yeah that seems tedious. How do you export the backup?
Realcalc is my calculator
I've seen n64oid but how do the graphic handle?

Phonemypc
This doesn't seem that bad, if there is a trial I wouldn't mind using it but I do not use window that often.
When I do need to connect to my laptop I use splashtop.

Terminal emulator, script manager, setCPU

I really like astro as an alternate file manager

I use Go Launcher exclusively regardless of ROM as no ROM has a Launcher I like better.
I have 4 app folders in Go Launcher that follow me from ROM to ROM.
Games - Contents vary as I get bored with games easily. Only staple is Words With Friends since my wife loves playing.
Web - Gmail, Email (stock), Chrome, Facebook, Amazon.com, Google Maps
Media - BeyondPod, Gallery (stock), Amazon MP3, Amazon Kindle, YouTube
Tools - Play Store (stock), Amazon Appstore, Google Drive, YouVersion Bible, File Explorer (currently stock MIUI), Titanium Backup, TeamViewer
Other essential apps include Beautiful Widgets, Go Calendar, Go Contacts, ROM Manager, and SwiftKey

I use
ROM tool box
System tuner
Gummy power

Must-Have List of applications

Dear owner of eLocity A7, we need you...
It's must-have list of applications which we can use to improve usability, ergonomics and enjoyment with tablet. There are recommendations, not orders
-----------------------------------------------------
Rules and template:
app -> reason
1. Don't add games
2. Music and video players, readers, news, social network apps are undesirable, but in extra case they can be added. This isn't contest of best app for twitter.
3. You can add alternative apps even app with same functionality exists in list already (alternative launcher for example)
-----------------------------------------------------
General
Quick Boot -> Use shortcuts 'Reboot' and 'Power Off' instead of hardware-button
CalenGoo -> [PAID] Great calendar app (thx to MagentaJoe)
Bluetooth GPS Provider -> Use a bluetooth GPS receiver with apps like Maps and many others
BlueGPS4Droid -> Use a bluetooth GPS receiver with apps like Maps and many others
QuickPic -> Great substitute for existing gallery apps that come w/ devices. its about 200k, no overly fancy 3d, and is great to use as a wallpaper picker. (thx to bestialbub)
Any Cut -> Allows you to create Home shortcuts to anything. (thx to bestialbub)
Launchers
Launcher Pro -> Replacement of standart home-launcher (standart is sluggish)
Zeam -> Replacement of standart home-launcher (thx to bestialbub)
ADW Launcher -> Replacement of standart home-launcher
Performance
Root Uninstaller -> [FREE] Uninstalls any unneeded default apps easily (thx to TheZedo)
Autostarts -> [PAID] Root users can disable unwanted autostarts and speed up their phone boot.
Screen
Screenshot ER -> [XDA Free / Market PAID] Screen capture app for all rooted devices
Button Savior -> Makes virtual buttons (Simulates 'Home' 'Back' 'Search' 'Back' 'Recent Task' 'Screen Off')
BackLightKiller -> Turning off the back light also puts the device on standby. This app gets round this by setting the back light to 0.01 and forcing the machine not to switch off.
Screen Filter -> Reduce the brightness of your screen for night-time viewing
Files
Root Explorer -> [PAID] Filebrowser (requires root) - easy, light and high-functional
Ghost Commander -> File manager for the Android platform with two panels (famous Norton|Midnight|Total Commander style)
AndRootFile -> [Free] - root access file manager for read, write, delete capability (thx to cbotd)
Keyboards
Keyboard from Android 2.3 -> Gingerbread keyboard (thx to netstat_EVO)
Thumb keyboard -> [PAID] Thumb Keyboard introduces a comfortable keyboard for thumb-typing on the Phone ánd Tablet (thx to dmaryland)
SwiftKey -> [Trial/PAID Amazon & Android Market] Easy keyboard that comes with auto-correct and predictive text typing (thx to cbotd)

You are an idiot. His info lists that he is from Russia... I REEEEAAALLLLYYY doubt that english is his first language. Compared to most americans, he's got it down pretty good too.
I ball bust on here, but at least my posts contribute.

I didn't see any misspelled words in his post. Get your whining right next time. Also, yes, you are an idiot.
My contribution to the list would be CalenGoo. It's a great calendar app.
I'm curious of what others are using too. I learned about button savior on another post and it is a convenient app to have. Watching this thread with interest of the other hidden goodies I don't know about.
Another one to add to the list...
Gingerbread Keyboard.
I think it's. "Keyboard from 2.3 +" in the market. One of the best dollars I have ever spent.
There is a free one too without the plus sign, but what the hell, it's only a buck.
Awesome auto spell check too.
Sent from my Elocity A7 using Tapatalk
Not sure why people don't talk about this app...
Thumb Keyboard -> This is the best keyboard app for the Elocity in my opinion. I wrote half of my Law term paper using it.
app 2 sd
Does this app work on the A7? I tried looking up any references in the forums but couldn't find anything. I know there is a problem on the A7 with sd cards and have tried this app but cannot get it to save apps to the sd card. Even though file manager apps do see the sd card and allow access to it.
Thanks.
App 2 sd
I have this app downloaded but all I can do is clear cache or delete apps. I've never been able to move apps to the SD card either.

Does the app let you set a path for the SD card? Or automatically assume /mnt/sdcard?
It automatically does it.

Well that's just inconvenient.
Screenshot ER -> screen capture app for all rooted devices
Free at XDA
Paid at market
Great thread, wish I had seen it earlier, autostarts a paid app now
Root Uninstaller - [FREE] Android Market - uninstalls any unneeded default apps easily.
Free Root File Manager
AndRootFile [Free] Amazon Appstore - root access file manager for read, write, delete capability
Found this at Amazon AppStore. See's SD card and any mounted device in DexMod v1.2 and gives the real space free and spaced used for my 16gig SDCard. Read, write, move, delete and everything else. Very nice GUI too.
Did not find it on Google Market.
SwiftKey
SwiftKey [Paid] Amazon and Android Market - easy keyboard that comes with auto-correct and predictive text typing.
Got this as the free app of the day on Amazon, but well worth the $1.99 it costs. It has made typing on my A7 much easier and much more enjoyable.

I currently do not have root explorer. I have used it only twice on a previous device. So far the two seem very comparable based on my limited use and recollection of Root Explorer.

[Q] The most recommended and useful...

Hi, I am new in Android and in HTC, could anybody experienced with Android make some list of the most useful applications such as to fully handle with office files, file manager, PDF reading and other ones ?
I would appreciate it a lot.

Handcent
LauncherPro (my #1 MUST HAVE)
LED me know
ROM Manager *root*
Root Explorer *root*
Screen Off and Lock (pairs awesomely with dock swipe gestures in LauncherPro)

Titanium Backup *root*
Type Fresh *root* (to change system fonts)
Wireless ADB *root*
Long winded, I know - just went down my list for the useful apps I use all the time

I use screenshot for screenshots, battery usage I use the built in Android process, I have no idea what total manager is, wyse pocketcloud for VNC, and quadrant and linpack for benchmarking.
Also, adfree is awesome. It's like adblock for your phone.

[Q] What would be the best set of apps to install at first ?

Hi,
Coming from symbian/winmo phones, the S2 will be my first android phone, what would the best apps to install right away -input, launcher, navigation, etc. (I don't care about games, and I don't mind paying for my apps).
Thanks in advance for your help.
Pulse is the best news app.
Google Maps is the best nav app.
Launcher Pro is my favorite home replacement.
Google Goggles
Opera Mini
Callmeter NG (data count calls sms..)
Astro (file manager)
Barcode Scanner
Bit useless question to me, although understand that your asking for it, Ill try to give an impression what apps are needed for me and why
adfree: no more adds, even in paid games etc.
astro: mentioned before, best file manager
chrome to phone: send stuff from your chrome browser directly to your phone (note: works with both chrome and firefox!)
dropbox: send files directly from your pc to your phone
google maps: navigation etc etc
msn talk pro: best msn client
root explorer: file manager with root acces, nice if your a bit more comfortable with your phone and you want to place stuff in system folders
simi folder: nice free folder manager (very customizable)
launcher pro plus: best home replacement/launcher
skype: not the best app, but hey, skype on your phone.
soundhound: best music recognition app (similar to shazam, but a bit better)
google talk: nice messenger app from google, will soon work with video calling
thinkfree office: nice office package (also reads pdf)
titanium backup: best backup app for me
google translate: handy if your abroad all the time (like me)
whatsapp: free message app, similar to ping! or blackberry messenger
widgetsoid: (all in one widget creater, place nice toggles and shortcuts easily, very customizable)
Games:
ashpalt 6: good racing game

Modern Combat 2: nice fps
Speedx 3d: strange reflex game, highly addictive
I have some more stuff, but these are my recommendations!
Thanks tennis11, okorn and stitch !
I understand your point stitch, it is a little bit like if I was asking "what would be the qualities I should be looking in a GF ?" We are all different, and our choices in anything including what we install in our phones directly reflect who we are, what are our personal interests, etc.
Still, if I could avoid going through 3454 web sites and 234 threads to discover what's the best rss reader or nav app, I would be very happy
Therefore merci beaucoup for the time you spent answering me guys !
and on the top of it, you will see a fair share of complete android noobs (like me) who juste made the move because of THIS phone !
Sorry in advance for the large number of basic questions we will ask the seasoned android warriors over here...
i'm one of these noobs too

Pulse news reader has a nice layout. Free aswell

Ulysse Gizmos (level meter, compass etc.)
Ulysse Speedometer (nice app for drive-tracking)

K9 Mail
APG (Gnu PGP encryption for K9 Mail)
Games
Pew Pew
VideoPlayer
mVideoPlayer
AudioPlayer
MIUI player (don't think that this is in the Market, but there is a link for it on this forum)
News and affairs
BuzzBox
Connectivity
ConnectBot (SSH/Telnet)
Torrents
tTorrent (lite). The paid version allows unlimited d/l whilst the free one allows a max 250kB/ps, which is quite adequate.
All these app are available for free on the Market (bar MIUI player, which is freely available). however some have paid versions that offer better features. LauncherPro comes to mind. I bought this.

That was a nice collection. Allow me to add more.
In alphabetical order:
1Mobile Market: As great as the normal Android market, has some additions IMHO.
aMetro: Subway maps for various countries.
App Update Notifier: As the name says. You can also schedule updates check.
AppRemover: Best uninstaller out there.
BatteryCalibration: As the name says.
Cache Cleaner: As the name says.
Dual File Manager: Best file explorer IMHO (Root Explorer is great too if you want to access the system, but this one has a better interface).
FasterFix: A fix for applying fast GPS lock.
HD Wallpapers: As the name says.
JuiceDefender: Best battery saver out there, truly makes a difference.
Maxthon: An excellent browser indeed. As well as xScope.
MoboPlayer: Best flv videos player (Am not sure if SGS2 plays flv by default).
Mp3TaggerPro: Best tags editor for your music tracks.
MultiTasking Pro: Visual task switcher (Something like the good old task manager, back in WinMo days ).
PhoneUsage: Statistical reports for your usage (calls, SMS, and data).
Plume: The very best Twitter app out there.
PowerAMP: The very best music player out there.
SD Speed Increase: As the name says, makes a difference in reading/writing speeds.
Smart Keyboard: Best one IMHO, as well as SwiftKey.
Where's My Droid: Excellent one, if you lost your phone, just SMS it & it will ring.
NoLED is pretty handy - it shows a little sprite on your screen if you have a missed call or unread text etc, and uses very little power because of the SAMOLED+. A bit like the glowing trackball on the Nexus One.
can i download the apps on the pc and then install it on my phone?
If yes how?
and where can i get the apps to download from?
Try market first.
I personally think spark 360 is an excellent app for xbox live costs about a pound but well worth it if u have xbox

I've just arrived at Android, having spent the last 18 months with the HTC HD2 and would like to try to find some similar apps to Winmo ones that I particularly miss (I don't miss the phone though...).
My wish list is for the best Android versions of;
Scilor's groovedownloader - absolutely superb free mp3 downloads
SPB Backup - saved my sanity on many occasions
iGo Primo - Great offline sat nav
That will do for now, if there are any suggestions out there.
I am loving this phone.

What are your must have apps?

Switching over from the iphone 3gs, this is my first android phone. What are some must have apps I should get? Thanks
edit: btw I have searched around, but a lot of lists are from Feb, May, etc., and who knows if something new has come up that replaces the best of yesteryear (I sure don't).

1. onenote - note taking app.. notes, memos etc.. syncs online and onto your computer. apps are available on the iOS too
2. double twist player (for itunes syncing.. I guess you'd need that if you are coming from an iphone)
3. ES file explorer - just a file explorer but capable of lots of other things once you root your phone
4. Swiftkey - keyboard that predicts your next word when typing.. pretty good and can save you time
Fancy widgets is better IMO than beautiful widgets. Nicer clocks styles.
Simple Calendar widget. Activate 4x2, multi skin to get loads of lines for diary entries, then shrink back to 4x1 to save space.

I am using My Phone Explorer and it's a Freeware. You can donate to the developer if you like it.
It's in Google Play and here's the link to the developer site.

It's all very well ripping this post, and he could have phrased it better, but the guy has a point. There are no such thing as "must have" apps. It depends what you like/want and is entirely subjective. So you'd do just as well looking at the list of top apps on the Play Store (where you effectively get the recommendations of millions) as you would reading the opinions of those who post on this thread.
