KeviKev Case Video Review - Xoom Accessories

Hey guys --
I just posted a video review of the KeviKevCase. I purchased it last week. I am not a reviewer, just grabbed my camera and decided to shoot a video about the case. Please forgive the quality, I just tossed something together for users who are still unsure.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRysHWqaLgc

Thanks, but with that black pad you have in the background, it's hard to see anything of the case. You need better lighting.

I stay in a bat cave. I tried to lighten it up the best I could. Maybe i'll reshoot at work.

I bought this case and there are few funny things. Like as you mentioned in your review the devise is upside down
And this can cause some problems when you are watching a movie or playing a game and the screen software does not use the function of screen rotation you will found your self holding your xoom in odd way to play the game.
In addition, if you need to plug your xoom to the charger you can't close the case because the devise is upside down.
Otherwise, if these things does not really matter to you, an ok case.

Yeah kinda stinks, however I just flatten it out.
Overall for protection purposes the case is a keeper to me!

I just ordered this, anyone see them in person?

That would be the fault of the software not using auto rotation not the case if the xoom went in the other way when you had it in landscape the camera would be at the bottom facing your belly not your face.correct?

I am sorry but that is just damn unacceptable .... they made the case to Carry the device upside down....that's bull sh*t...

I may look for a new case solution if I cannot find something for this...
This is starting to make me angry....

Lol um those of you saying its upside down.... turn it over. The small part where the case bends is the bottom. If you look at the other eBay auctions for this case you will see that you are actually holding it upside down. The back panel that folds into the notch is the back when you fold it around and not the bottom. This makes it where the device is almost standing up when it's opened.
I have the Motorola case that is sold at the Verizon and best buy stores and it opens the same way with the charging ports facing the inside of the fold.
This is how it should look when opened.

Umm then we flip it over and the cut outs on the back for the important things like SOUND, the front and back CAMERA are covered up now and the POWER button.

This is true. However, not all apps support the rotations and sad thing most of the games and video apps usually does not support it. though I understand your point the other possible options propaly will cover the camera ..
What about power cut !! you can't even charge your xoom if the case is closed !!

The more I use the case the more I'm getting annoying. I need to open my case and lay it face down to charge my phone at night.... Now, I have to flatten out the case to play a game.. it's starting to making me a bit mad. Hopefully he comes out with a different version and allow us to exchange if we are not happy. Something needs to be rethought out or something.

If you use it like the op who posted the video did (upside down) then yeah, the cameras would be at the bottom, the speakers would be facing the surface you have it set on, and the power button would facing down.
If you stand it like it's shown in the product pictures (right side up) the cameras are on top and when you turn it around everything is up top like it's supposed to be.

That appears to be a work around. Do you really think it suppose to be this way? If so, its not stable at all.

Bad back cover quality?

I just notice of mine and two of me friends' TP2 ,
the back cover is designed so badly....
it is easily snapped off, even when i just tried to push the power button, me hand pushed the back cover in a way it would open
the snap part of the phone, that is, in the middle of each side, when the back cover snapped, it blows the size in such a way i was afraid it will break, and leave an empty spot. not so sure if this is a defect coz it also there on 2 of me friends'
so, is this a design flaw? or we were just getting bad units?

look carefully at the dented back cover and a small gap between backcover and the unit
Hi!
i have the same problem!
my back cover "automatically" open when i do a little pressure on it, and when i close it the upper border-plastic is not at the level of the phone....mmmm
BAD HTC!!!
i wondered if it was only my problem...but probably not!
sorry for bad english, tryed to explain at my best
Hmm very strange. Mine is actually very tight, i had to apply quite a lot of force to make it go off the phone. The photo looks to me as if some of the internal holding clamps are not shifted into place when you closed the phone.

i second that, it should be holding firm but so far i saw other 2 with exactly same problem, now 3
i had exactly the same problem...
the cover went off really easy anche the 2 sides were not in place..
the problem is in the small tooth in the lower side of the rear cover, near the usb port...
it's too tight and prevent the cover from sittin in place..
i just cut away an half millimeter from that small pieceand now the cover is in place firmly

u cut it off? oh man, am i really that brave enough for this expensive phone?
how do you know its because of that small tooth anyway? is it because when you press the bottom part of the back cover it makes a squakey sound?

i didn't cut off all the tooth...just a slice...to make is thinner...
i tought about that for a week and finally trying and retrying i took the cutter and did it...
i noticed that if i put in place the rear cover not sliding it, but pushing it in place from the corners, it fited right, but the bottom part could not snap in place because of that piece of plastic...
slicing it down really carefully did allowed the back cover to snap in place
the sides of the cover now are almost in place....the bump is still there but is really not noticeable now...

i gained the bravery lookin at htc online shop....30 euro for a spare back cover.....i decided to try...the worst thing it coul happen is that the cover is loose and i need a spare one....not a big amount of money...
Same problem with my phone.. (Poland) but I am not so brave to cut something that I bought for over 500 euros. I gave it back and waiting for the HTC replay.
Does anybody know if they are concerning it as a product failure and replacing it?
I guess as always it depends 2/3 on your negotiation skills if the manufacturer will consider whatever issue you have as a product failure. So if all you did was opening the cover for inserting a battery and sim and then closing it and it's not closing very well, you shouldn't have any trouble getting a replacement.
I don't have this problem, Mine is very tight....
Likewise, mine is nice cool too.

My cover was very tight (almost too tight...was kinda hard to get off) for the first month, but since yesterday it hasn't been fitting properly.
Kinda hard to tell what is wrong, but might have a look at the 'skimming' suggestion in the thread, although taking a knife to my phone...
Mine is tight too... I was suprised to read in the manual that you have to take the stylus out to remove the cover. No matter i was having issues at first.
Maybe it's time to start reading the damn things.
Mine was fine up until 2 days ago. Now I'm having the loose back cover issue. I cant believe I paid this much for a device and I have to consider modifying the back cover to fit properly.
After examining the inside of the battery cover (where the stylus inserts). I really don't see how not taking out the stylus would damage or bend the back cover when taking it off. Unless, you all see something I don't.

Thank you.
I pulled out my Drimmel tool and just barely cut a tad bit off that piece, I mean just a little bitty bit. Not too much. Now it fits a lot better than it did and it sits flush with the top of the phone like its suppose to. Don't get me wrong it could be tighter, but its not popping loose trying to get it out of its case.
Could you post a photo, maybe in good quality? I want to do same, but I am a little bit affraid... thx

Armbands for vibrant?

Anybody have a recommendation? Right now I go for a run with my ipod shuffle (the one with a clip) and a stopwatch and when I'm done I check my distance on google maps. I don't want to spend the money on a fancy gps watch so I'd love to use my phone to take the place of the three things I use now.
I would like one that is going to give the phone some protection from sweat and the elements and preferably be able to use the screen while the phone is in the band.
Edit 9/24/10: Got my armband from here http://cgi.ebay.com/C6-Sports-Armba...178137?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item1c152a4d59 yesterday in the mail and ran with it today for the first time. For $7 it's not bad. I can press the power button through the material and use the screen though it's awkward to do so on my arm. I can't really get the volume buttons to work very well though. Biggest problem was the GPS, mine works fine if I'm in a car moving quickly but at running speeds it drifts around pretty bad. I ran 5.5 miles and My Tracks says I did 6.8 and gained 19k feet of elevation, lol. I'm going to try something meant for running and see if works any better.
Anyway the band itself is pretty much awesome for what I paid but if I saw one made for the vibrant that I could use the buttons through easier I'd probably get one.
maybe something like this
http://www.iarmbands.com/Arm-Band-for-Samsung-Galaxy-S-captivate-vibrant-fascinate-LAB-002.htm
Offtopic: what part of the 801 are you from?
Pretty much. You used that? I'd love to know if someone had tried one before I buy but if not I'll get one and report back.
I live near trolley square.
Edit: where is k town? Kaysville? Kearns?
no i havent used it....that was one of the better ones that i could find that you described.
Yeah I live by Jordan Landing on the Kearns side.
Yeah from what I've seen that looks pretty good. If I don't get any recommendations I'll probably pick that up tomorrow.

Tried this..... not bad but not great.
I have a generic one and the biggest problem I have is unlocking the phone to do anything with it. My G1 was super easy since it was on the front, but since its on the hard its rather hard to push and use.
I have the belkin armband for my ipod touch. Check it out, if its something your interested in I'll run out to my truck and grab it and see how it fits and let you know.

........which is why this one is being sold as a Vibrant case. If you look at the pic it shows an iphone in the case. It's cheap though so that is a bonus.
Ok no problem, I'm going to run out and burn one and grab it and see how it fits. Will bum someone elses phone to snap some pics for you so keep an eye out.
I got one from KMART. cheap....effective. It is made for the IPOD but I have run with it a lot using the sweetest training app out there....Endomondo and I have never had any problems with it even slipping loose at all.
Well it didn't go so well. While outside I put my vibrant into the armband case and it fit, although I did have to stretch the silicon case a bit as the size difference was greater then I had thought it would be. But it did fit. So I brought it inside and removed it to take photos. Then put it back in and the case ripped. Now I think this may or may not be a belkin case, I can not remember, but I did get it at walmart. Its worth looking into but be aware that constant removing and reinstalling will shorten the life. I have had this thing for a couple years and it has seen alot of abuse at the gym, while running, and while doing yard work so I'm sure it was already near the end of its life anyways. The pic is crappy cause I was taking it with the forward facing camera on a android tablet I'm playing with.

Lol. It's ordered so it should be here in a few days and I'll let you know what I think.
How are you guys addressing the fact that the lock button is on the side of the phone? Meaning how are you accessing it to start, stop and pause your work outs if the screen is off?
Well on the ipod one I jacked up, the volume rocker and power could be activated through the stretched silicon sides. Too bad it didn't work out.

UPDATE: PICTURES ADDED Slim Magnetic (Trifold) Cover Case

UPDATE: PICTURE ADDED!
There are a total of 6 magnets on the case (as you can see in pic 1 and 2). most of you might have concerns of how the magnet will affect the tablet. i can tell you from my experience that IT DOES NOT AFFECT MY S PEN capabilities. They use the 6 magnets so that when folding the cover, it will stay together. And because of the magnet when its folded its VERY strong, not flimsy.
S Pen is also accessible shown in pic 7
Charger is accessible shown in pic 8.
Top isnt cover well, the volume and power button visible as you can see in pic 9
Overall the case is very thin, about 1.3 cm?? But it does feel like it added some weight onto the tablet.
ALSO: this case comes with a screen protector (the one that i have on, i did screw up a few times)
Lemme know if you have any questions

ya, when i get it imma post up some pics. but the main reason why i got it was for the magnetic clip, which can be tucked/fold in when its trifolded (<=not sure if its a word)

Well they can't hurt the memory unlike if you have a hard drive in there, but my concern is that I bought a poetic case which has two magnets on each corner of the case near the speakers. At least they aren't anywhere close to the pen.
yea thats what i was somewhat worry about. there are a total of 4 magnets (as seen from vid) and when closed all 4 are pretty much around the camera area, which is also where the mobo is located as well i think...

dont worry, we have tried it , no interference with the magnets
I have one. I think it's great, especially at that price. There's a little give in it when typing with it propped up in landscape (at a small angle, with the tablet "upside down") but it's very stable otherwise. Only other problem is that it doesn't close if anything's plugged in to the headphone jack.
My first thought was why did they not cover fully the back of the note, it looks like they have little wings sticking out the back on the sides. If they made a cover with the back completely covered with the same material I would definitely buy one.

Yeah it looks like they didnt cover the part that secured the tablet in place.
This is the case I have:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088I9AX4/ref=oh_details_o03_s01_i00
and I enjoy it. It covers the tablet nicely, easy access to the pen, in landscape on a table, the top is elevated about half and inch or so to give a nice little angle on the device. Also it can easily be set to sit up with 3 different angles in the landscape mode. Slim and sturdy construction as well with decent padding.

How do you feel about the case after having it for a few days? And how is the fit? Does the Note snap in tightly? I have a $7 poetic trifold, but don't like that the bezel is covered. I really like the looks of this case, but would like to hear a bit more about it.

I actually like it ALOT. when its in trifold mode, especially laying down for typing its very sturdy, it DOESNT wiggle or move at all.
and YES its a good fit for the tablet, as long as you dun hold it by the cover and wiggle it vigorously. As you know there are only 3 corners supporting the tablet, since we need the opening for s pen, but from my experience if you simply push the s pen corner (the corner that isnt cover) it can easily pop up.
lemme know if you have any other questions.
ALSO the magnets DOES NOT affect the screen for me.

WATERPROOF Obex case review

There is nothing to hide when I say lifeproof was my favorite case for the iphone and let me wondering ..when the heck are we gonna get some love??
Seidio did it with the OBEX . Its awesome to be able to put your phone under water!!! I cant get over it haha
enjoy

Looks good. Good review. I think I'll wait for life proof to decide if I want this or that.

the 1meter limit kills it. lifeproof will be 2 meters.
I want a case even if larger designed to be opened often with NO PORTS so it can go deeper. I would like 30ft. thats deep enough you can dive down a little snorkeling and if you drop it in shallows its not likely to go deep enough to crush.
It is actually a 2.3 meter submerge for 30 minutes but contstant 1 meter down.
ahh thats not so bad then. not like typical user will stay under that long anyway

He he exactly. The way I see it even if u are in a pool floating and chilling the phone will most likely be in your pocket and that will def be less than 2 meters

true true. but the issue is what happens when it falls out of your pocket
does it float?

Unfortunately, it doesn't float....I let my daughter play with it in the tub, sank to the bottom.
So I finally got my review finished and thought I'd share my opinions on it.
No doubt this is a beast of a case but its not perfect by any means. I've dropped it twice from about 4 feet in height with no visible damage as well as done a few underwater trials one of which was letting my one and half year old daughter play with it while she took a bath. Held up like a champ and build quality is top notch. The case is bulky but not unusable by any means, takes a few seconds getting used to it and after that you're home free. It pockets very nicely in my jeans but I can see it being a problem for people with skinny jeans.
The screen sensitivity goes down with the screen guard and tends to jerk every once in a while so I had to disable pattern unlock and stop using the swype-like feature in the keyboard I use but I'm still able to scroll through webpages and pinch to zoom in pictures pretty well. Call quality seemed great on the receiving end but on my end it was a bit muffled. Same thing happened when listening to music but something that helped was making sure the speaker volume wasn't at full 100%. It can't be completely avoided considering the sound has to travel through a water tight chamber so in my eyes its a decent trade off.
The latch that exposes the power port stopper could be a little less hard to open imo and I definitely put my nails through a bit of pain and bruising after opening it time and time again. Hard buttons worked flawlessly but the capacitive buttons took some getting used to with the lip at the bottom of the case. Overall I would recommend you add it to your arsenal and even if its not your daily driver its good to have for those family outings or outdoor adventures.

Mine was delivered yesterday. I like the case a lot however, as noted, there is room for improvement.
My biggest complaint is that the main body of the case slides easily on hard surfaces since it's is made of hard plastic. It doesn't grip to the surface if placed face up and can easily slide off an end table or night stand if bumped. The face section of the case is lightly rubberized so the phone won't slide as easily if placed face down.
My Seidio Extended case for my Thunderbolt had a rubber exterior with a skeletonized hard plastic cover. Enough of the rubber exterior was exposed to provide some slip resistance. IMO, the Obex could benefit from some exposed rubber areas on the back portion of the case to provide some anti-slip properties.
The positive aspect of the hard cover is that it does slip into my pants pocket easily.

No floating at all

Agreed o how slippery it is..If the material was a little more rugged or maybe have some indentations it would be different.
Also, I dont understand a little why is it that big. Between the phone and the case there is room. They could ve made it maybe smaller and keep the phone tighter but on the other hand we are already working with a large device
How does the mic and speakers portion work? Do you have to uncover flaps or something?
Some additional observations.....
The protective screen cover really affects the sensitivity of the touch screen. Using the phone is starting to frustrate me.
The screen 'jumps' a lot and registers touches when I don't intend to touch. Additionally, getting the back button to register is hit and miss.
I guess for $80 I'm stuck with dealing with this, however, the water & drop protection are more important to me, at least for now with winter weather approaching.
Consider if the reduced screen sensitivity is worth it to you before you spend the $$$ on this case.

nope. those are protector by a membrane. So sound goes out but nothing goes in.
the ports u need to open are charging and head phones
And a little more to add....
I just got a phone call from Seidio! The rep was gathering feedback on the Obex case. I relayed the observations I made in my previous two posts and he said that he would pass it on to his product development team.
I've never experienced this from a company before! I would suspect that other early adopters will get a call for product feedback as well.
It's nice to see a company reach out to its customers.

Yeah there's no doubt Seidio customer service is top notch. Glad you got a chance to convey the concerns, who knows maybe some adjustments will be made and they'll send you a replacement. At the very least similar products will improve moving forward

Of course it will be down to the software for how well it works, but it has piqued my interest.
This is pretty damn sweet actually :good:
Very cool.. i was thinking of doing something like that for myself anyways, but it would be nice if it was made for it!
I wonder how well this system will integrate with an aftermarket car stereo. I have a sub woofer, and a backup camera in my car, and they both connect directly to my head unit. If I could use an android phone as my backup camera, I would be incredibly pleased.

I believe it has preamp outs for a sub amp, but no input for a cam.

Well, that's just disappointing. I'm not willing to lose my backup camera, I guess I will not be buying one.

Can't really expect them to support other party cam setups. You could rig up an IP cam back there. There are a number of apps on Play that should be able to receive it.
A little more information here from Android Police

My main concern with a setup like that would be screen burn-in on our AMOLED display. I used my GNex in a powered car dock with the screen always on, and I could clearly see the giant Pandora "P" burned into the middle of the screen from my car-home application.

Why would you need to keep the display on all of the time? Of course, if the clamp doesn't allow access to your power button, then it is a pretty big fail for Android.

If there was an option to dim the display or even go to sleep, with a way to quickly wake it up (Car Home Ultra recently added this feature) then I'd be fine with that. Otherwise, what kind of hoops would you have to jump through to skip/pause/change source/etc with the display turned off, all while avoiding an accident?

Well, I am assuming they thought this out, and ran everything by the lawyers as liability can be a big thing with something like this. Of course, it may be half ass (with no one thinking about sleeping/waking the phone) and just put up a universal disclaimer every time you power it on, much like my Eclipse "user interface from hell" in-dash nav head.
Guess will just have to wait and see.

Yeah, too light on details to know at this point. But I don't think it would really matter as much on non-AMOLED phones. I'm just wondering if this is tailored more for Xperia phones. If I had all the standard playback controls as physical buttons I'd probably be happy with it. It does look like it might have physical volume buttons, but I can't really tell what the others are for in that tiny pic.

The buttons on the front are source, voice, and volume, and maybe dual purpose (long press) as there are other labels printed next to them. It also comes with a remote for when the phone is not docked.
It is tailored for Sony models as it has the magnetic charging port for them in the cradle. I just hope it was not designed for always on screens. That would be a waste.
i will never, ever, ever ,ever EVER buy another sony product again, much less another head unit. i bought one last year that was 1/2 assed at best, and the firmware updates were pathetic. Plus when everyone complained in the forums, they buried the car audio forum in miscellaneous products with all the dead proprietary tech they abandoned. STAY AWAY
this head unit has potential. i've always wanted to do something with my N7, but this is a close second, and portable.

i'm wondering if this thing can be modified to fit a tablet!? at the end of the day, it's just the mounting mechanism that gets in the way.
I have yet to find a tablet that isn't polarized at 90°. That means it is un-viewable in landscape when driving with polarized sunglasses (which I always use).
Thankfully the Moto X is polarized at 45° and viewable in both portrait and landscape.

good point. the 7 is def polarized at 90.
i seemed to have had a similar problem with my old DROID1/2/3/4 lines. once i added an anti-glare screen protector, it seemed to correct the issue. i wonder if the same could be accomplished with a tablet or if its too much real estate.
That's kind of cool that it has a small display behind where the phone sits, that kind of resolves one of my concerns about it being totally useless without a phone, and having to uninstall it later when I sell the car.
Those "shelfs" on the top and bottom look like major dust catchers though, that would drive me nuts. The "release" button makes me wonder if the clamping mechanism is motorized? Would be cool if the magnet was strong enough and polarized correctly to trigger the Car Mode on the Moto X too.
Sorry, just thinking out loud...

you could always tape/glue a magnet to engage it.
