Mango new features currently available in the Emulator - Windows Phone 7 Software Development

A short delve into the emulator in the developer tools reveals things like navigation that still hasn't officially been confirmed!
Here's what I've found so far:
Zune:
-There's a smart-dj feature
-You can create and save playlists
-There's a "related artists" and bio under the artist tab, great for discovering music
-Podcasts work well
-You can't "heart" songs (at least in the emulator)
-There's still no scrub controls
Bing & Maps
-Bing maps has voice-guided directions as expected
-You can show traffic on maps
-Still no landscape maps
-It's now possible to scroll the mini-map while the text directions are on-screen
-Bing music recognizes music like Shazam and clicking on the result will take you to zune marketplace
-You can now unlock the phone using the search button, apparently
-If you search for something on Bing that has an application equivalent; it will show you a link to the application within Bing.
Keyboard
-Keyboard prediction has been improved a lot:
It previously didn't correct misspellings of many short words like ar -> at, fir-> for and br-> be), now it does
It also now corrects it if you press a letter instead of space between two words e.g. it will suggest "I'm about" if you type imnabout or imnaboit, and will suggest "How are you" if you type "hownarebyou"
The keyboard also corrects common misspellings like Profesional -> Professional
-Keyboard tries to predict next word (as shown at 24th May event), e.g. If you type I, then "tr", it will suggest "tried", whereas in WP7 it will suggest nothing. This seems to work pretty well
IE
- Websites seem to render more accurately
- Websites can use GPS data for location
- Bing suggestions now appear when typing a search in IE as well
- Text still looks garbled when really zoomed out
- Tab animation has changed very subtly
General OS:
- Same colour themes as last time
- It appears you can't "press and hold" the back button in the emulator, meaning possibly we can't do multitasking, even in an unlocked emulator.
Camera
- No changes in general layout. There seems to be a software camera button in the camera app
Can't wait for an unlocked emulator!
Update: If you search for something on Bing that has an application equivalent; it will show you a link to the application within Bing. Picture at the end.
Update 2: Additions to the keyboard section about prediction
Update 3: There seems to be a software camera button in the camera app
Update 4: It appears you can't "press and hold" the back button in the emulator, meaning possibly we can't do multitasking, even in an unlocked emulator.
Update 5: The "my location" icon now has the same colour as the OS theme

fantastic write up

Thanks. Updated with one more thing If anyone else has things to add, I will update the list

Thank you for the infos you provided! I was wondering if there's any chance to explain a bit how does the "smart DJ" option in Zune, work?
Can you move songs around freely and then create the playlist or not? How does it work?
Thank you for your time!

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work on the emulator. I'll let you know if I can get it working.
EDIT: To expand on that, it says "WE don't have enough info about this artist to generate a Smart DJ playlist"

"Bing music recognizes music like Shazam"
> Shazam inb4 out of business in wp7 lol.

Yeah especially as Shazam now costs money for unlimited tagging!

Who knows what "smart dj" option really is...
Anyway, thanks for your time and efforts!

On the zune player, the smart dj takes the song you are listening to, and creates a playlist of 25 or so songs that are similar to that song.

its kinda like Pandora, auto creates a playlist based on your taste with songs from your library and also marketplace if u have a Zune pass. The Zune desktop software has it and so did the Zune HD I m guessing.
And yeah Bing music looks awesome, maybe thats why Shazam decided to remove their app from the marketplace

Awesome work so far Robin.B! We're writing an article about this post right now.

From the 7.1 Beta Release notes:
"The task-switching user interface that accessed on physical devices by pressing and holding the back button, is not supported on the emulator."
I was looking forward to checking that out, too

One of the main Mango's features: IE now supports HTML5! And with hardware rendering and acceleration! This benchmark http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/performance/fishietank/ gives me about 25-26 fps in emulator. Wow, MS! Real device will render at least 50-60 fps
P.S. Still no Silverlight support in browser :-(

@ jmerrey and cbebop7
Ah, that is the thing I was hoping not to get as an answer... I hope you agree with me, that that is kinda useless.
It would be much better if one could rearange the songs in wished order, and then save that as an playlist (of course, with a possibility of editing that playlist).

Task Switching is accessed by pressing and holding F1 on your keyboard.

I'm running the emulator and was looking forward to trying a few things, but my PC keyboard doesn't work in the emulator. Is this normal?

UDATED 07/03/2009: Media Center for Windows Mobile

Hi all!
We created a cool new app and hope you will enjoy it too.
The app's name is "Mobile Media Center".
You can use it to listen to music, watch pictures, play videos and keep up with RSS feeds/podcasts/vodcasts, all on your Windows Mobile device.
It can be controlled by the touch of your finger. Actually is was created because we missed a good looking media player that can be used while driving a car.
To get an impression of Mobile Media Center, please take a look at the screenshots below.
More information can be found here: http://mobilemediacenter.oabsoftware.nl
The Start page:

The Pictures page:
The video player page:
Oh, did I mention it's available for free?!
Update 07/03/2009:
Today we released version 1.0.2.
It appeared we made an error in the setup package: a file, that is required for bluetooth control of the player (AVRCP support), was not included in the setup...
This error was repaired in version 1.0.2.
Update 07/01/2009:
Today we released version 1.0.1, which includes most of the remarks made so far:
On the RSS page a button "Read all" was added. When this button is pressed, all items in the RSS feed will be marked as "read".
When changing the settings, the keyboard (input panel) will now appear whenever you have to enter text.
The Videos page will now show 3GP and 3G2 files as well.
congrats on your release!
Thanks for this will test when i have the new ROM.
I have only one Question, what file format the Video player play ?
Waseb
Mobile Media Center can play all formats that Windows Media Player can play (it actually uses Windows Media Player for the playback)
it looks and works fantastic! i had to right click on the download. left click did not work. thanks for the app!!!
Does not show .3g2 videos taken by the camera on my Omnia i910. WMP does play these videos.
Some other issues I see.
Small graphics glitch where the timer is. Landscape album cover needs to be moved.
Feature request:
Allow people to create new skins in an easy manner.
great soft
You're not far from perfection
Keep going !
Impressive! Thanks!
great software..
but I think that you should use bigger buttons....IMHO they are too small and too near each other to call this application really finger frindly....
Perhaps you could introduce an option to set a bigger button look ...
On My Omnia (WQVGA) They are too small ... at least They shoul be twice to be used while driving a car
Its definitely a great app, its just the buttons are a little small as stated above and also its a bit choppy.. but regardless, Good Work! keep it up xD
Feed Back
Just installed on my Omnia.
I like it but:
The 2 buttons are a little small.
When trying to add RSS feed, the soft keyboard doesn't pop. Impossible to add anything.
It needs a option to load a OPML file.
Also needs a way to mark a feed as read. I have the same problem with Kinoma. There is no way to mark a whole feed as read so next time you come back, you have no way of knowing if there are new posts. As far as I know that makes it useless as a RSS reader.
My music library is stored in an 'Artist' folder then subfolders for 'Album'. There is a folder.jpg in the album folder but not in the 'Artist' folder. So the main 'My Music' page doesn't show any images until I open the 'Artist' folder and then I can see each albums and their covers. Other players just ignore the 'Artist' folder and show the 'Albums'.
It's a great start for a first release though.
Don't take too long before you release a fix for those problems though. We have short attention spans here.
Jeannette
How do you go about installing the app? I went to the site. http://mobilemediacenter.oabsoftware.nl/
when I click the download link, I get a frame loading with a bunch of code. Am I supposed to save the frame as something.cab?
Wow! Nice work!
The idea is great and the realization is good too!
Of course it need some new implementation and improvements...
I think it's important have more compatibilities with video's standard and more fluidity when scrolling pages (for example album page!), bigger buttons it's a good idea too!
Also I'm sure everybody here are happy for this relase, my compliments
Please so, relase new versions often!
Thanks!

iPhone 4.0 will have multitasking? WP7, you better have that as well

Just came:
http://www.appleinsider.com/article...software_to_deliver_multitasking_support.html
Still not sure though ... but quite interesting.
If that is true, WP7 better to have it as well!
It's already been hinted that WP7S has multitasking. When you click back on the phone it's goes back to the last application or menu you were using.
Let's say you open Pictures, then you Open the Web Browser. If you click the back button then it will go back to pictures.
Yes, I know that, WP7 will have some sort of multitasking capability.
I just want to post news from other platform competitor (iPhone) so we can see that they are working on something ...
This year would be interesting on mobile world (WP7, iPhone 4, iPad?, HP Slate?).

Speaking of Tables, did you know that LG is supposedly making a WP7S tablet. I don't really care about that, but there are leaked videos of MS Courier which is the hottest thing I've ever seen. Also MS has some touch based OS called MS Locus. It's seens to be Webos, Android, and Iphone OS combined. Here's a pic

Please explain to me what multitasking is. It's a mobile device, what are you expecting multiple windows like you for A Full Blown Desktop OS? You can only view one app at a time. What kind of multitasking do you want? When you switch to another app, the app you were previously using pauses. If it was a IM, Web Browsing, Email or any other web based App it will continue to send information. It's the same if not similar multitasking that you see in Android.
Multitasking means that applications are actually running in the background.
On WP7S, they just save their sate and close or pause. That means they're not running = no multitasking.
(I might be wrong and maybe they are actually running, but everything currently hints that this is not the case and there's indeed no multitasking).
On Android, applications keep running. They just save their sate in case something goes wrong and they have to be closed (e.g. if the device runs out of RAM).
Yes, but is that a big difference? What does keeping an App open in the background benefit your anyway as long as it's readily available? It's not like that app is completely closes, it's just pauses to reduce it's footprint. When you go back it's immdiately available without any loading. Not like you see on the other fruity platform.
multi-tasking might not be really important from a normal user view---> i might be wrong....
however on a enterprise point of view, it is important. running ipblue at the background waiting for call or using office communicator at the background while checking out the email.
This has been discussed ad nauseum already. In many cases you need the application to actually run in background. MS and Apple do it for their own apps such as the music player. The whole question is whether we'll be able to use third-party apps that need it as well.

true, believe in the near future, we will have more prominent answer.
This: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0rd3TD9g_Y
+ WP7 design and MS services
= perfect
(notice how elegantly it multitasks and how it also has tiles? It just looks ugly)
That's probably the only OS that actually has that type of multitasking besides the Pre.

who gives a **** about the iphone ??? if uve handled a snapdragon phone , and after u get an iphone in ur hand , ur wipe ur ass with it and its ugly low res screen
its history , stop riding it
WP7 will be king
Iam very confident in windows phone7 and its ability to handle Xbox games and tasks. So confident that for WVGA devices like touchpro2 I made a demo of what it would be like and I put it here.
My best guess is that WP7 still uses windows CE as its code base and inherits multitasking support. Seems like multitasking is not a big deal though as WP7 moves away from the multiple application concept.
Although we have heard rumors that WP7S will have preemptive multitasking, if you think about it, the live tiles really defeat the purpose of multitasking.
Say you have a (multi-platform) twitter app.
In Android, you can leave this open and come back to it anytime and it will be up-to-date, but you don't receive any notification.
When using live tiles in WP7S, you can run your twitter app and then switch over to another app, and, although your twitter app will close, while your doing other things your app's live tile can be checking for updates periodically and even display the most recent tweet directed towards you on the homesreen. That way, when you go back to the homesreen, you can see that there's a new tweet, and launch the now-updated app.

Guitar Hero

Is there any (good) Guitar Hero (or sort of) for X1?
I don't think, that any guitar hero style game would work properly on the X1, because X1 doen't support multi touch. I tried a sort of guitar hero game and it was hardly playable.

Planned features for FUTURE versions
There is going to be a music editor for PC (at least) so you can create levels. The process won't be automatic, though, because we cannot make a program that guesses where the guitar is in the music by itself. So you are going to place the notes where you feel is right.
Note animations when you tap them.

Known Issues
I can't access the Options menu!
It's not working yet!
If the application below the game updates the screen, Touch The Music no longer recognizes touches or keystrokes
To be honest, I don't know why this happens but it will have to be fixed. Starting the game from the programs menu or the manilla programs tab minimizes this, as long as the messaging tab is not visible. (experimental fix in version 0.3)
The game does nothing!
This is a problem with some hidden GAPI calls I may be using... Try this fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532200
I have no Sound
If possible, change your ROM. If not, try the latest version and tell me all the eventual error messages.
Multitouch isn't working, my device has got no multitouch support!
Multitouch for Touch the Music is entirely software-based. It should work on any phone without hardware multitouch (yeah I know, mixed roles here).
If it doesn't on yours, try the latest version out and send me your log.txt
How can I make my own track levels?
I recommend using a program like audacity to open the mp3 file. Then, check the timing of the notes and write them in a text file as such:
<note type> <time>
Time can be absolute (i.e. 3000 = 3 seconds since beginning of the song) or relative (i.e. +1000 = 1 second since PREVIOUS NOTE). Please put in an absolute note for reference once in a while.
Note types can be:
L - left
M - middle
R - right
< - L + M
> - M + R
v - L + R
So for example, a simple music could be:
# This is a comment
# Intro of simple music
L 2000
R +200
M +300
R +200
< 5000
> +500
# Chorus. Note the absolute timing for reference
R 7000
L +200
R +200
M +300
etc......
Always remember, higher pitch (acute) notes should be on the right. I can't tell you enough to look at the track1.txt in the tracks folder of the game, to understand what I just said.
When you want to test it, convert your mp3 to aac and save it in the tracks folder as well as the txt with the notes script. Rename them both to track1.aac and track1.txt.
Thank you all for your time and especially the users who are contributing with testing, ideas or just kind words, you are all that makes this project possible.

Javascript Apps

The KIN's browser has javascript... and I've been playing a few javascript games on the phone and they work wonderfully. And it's really nice that you can pin the web pages on the apps screen. Some games require arrow keys that the kin lacks so games like tetris don't work properly. What i'm trying to get at is why don't we try to develop Javascript applications designed for use with this phone? Downside is you have to have a data plan or be on wifi to use the applications. But on the brightside it is a solution to the lack of apps on the phone.
Below are screenshots of some Javascript apps and the app menu.

Personally, two things: no connection needed, saves.
The nvidia part is a monster if used right, and we have a qwerty to map as keys for random emulators (if the OS protection is broken).
And i will use javascript to do some jailbreak or something, like i stated and/or normal website ajax requests....

I see where you're coming from. It's just this phone is so locked down and we haven't been able to get around it... Possibly some time in the future we may. This is just a proposal for one of the possibilities. I also like the idea of jailbreaking through javascript.

as far as i know, KIN's browser doesn't support urls starting with "ftp://" and "file://"
So, i see no way to access files through browser.
JavaScript App Development in Browser
I've experimented with developing hosted applications to run in the web browser (data connection required). Unfortunately, the double-tap delay introduces an irritating latency into the browser's response, making it seem slow. It waits for a second tap for zooming in, then responds to a single tap if the second tap doesn't occur within the wait period.
My experiment was to clone the Calculator application, adding scientific functions below the first step of buttons. When the phone is held horizontally, you have a basic calculator. Turning it vertically reveals the extended functions. Anyway, this latency causes the application's response to lag behind your input.
www .gregsearle.com/kin/scicalc.html (work in progress, somewhat flaky, you'll need to reassemble this link).
This is great, thanks for posting up this website. Does anyone know of other places to access these types of games?
The scientific calculator is finished as a proof-of-concept test, but the browser's tap lag makes it difficult to use. If there was a way to eliminate this lag, browser-based apps may be an effective solution.
I know this sounds noob-ish, but if this thing is based on WP7, then we can
a) get the Windows Phone 7 people to help us create a virus/something to crack the system.
b) Use the Chevron WP7 unlocker to hack the KIN. http://www.chevronwp7.com/
c) Connect an external harddrive/USB to this and see if we can get a connection. If we do, we can load up some sort of program like CWM to flash ROMS, edit the system, etc.
I know my ideas might be stupid, but doesn't hurt to try.

The thing is that as far as we know, its based on Windows CE 6, not WP7 sorry (though I may be mistaken with my facts)
got one
i found a game that is cached on the phone so it can be played without a connection... www.iminesweeper.com. it's as the name implies minesweeper, but it's better than nothing

Correct. The phone was originally planned to be the first WP7 product, but due to time and other issues, they used a very customised build of Windows Mobile 6.
The phone will always attempt to cache the last page loaded so that you can access it offline for a while. However, some pages can't be cached.
Just a thought
Before anyone freaks out on me, know that I haven't done any programming in 10 years (so I'm pretty much useless there), but I can do research for things people have done in the past. I stumbled across a method to cache games called "cache manifest". It seems to have been used by iphone/ipad users a lot (not sure why since they have apps). However, I did add a couple of the games I found that use it to my "apps" page on my KIN and while they can't be played (I guess not a compatible Java), I was able to pull it up 10 hours later without WIFI and see the start screen and some counters and drop down menus. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this and can mention if it may help. If this is useless sorry for wasting every bodies time. I'll give a couple example below.

Question Android TV app weirdness or glitch

Hi everyone.
I'm faced with difficulties when I run Android TV remote control app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote) on my P6Pro. It appeared to behave like an obsolete app abandoned by its developer - it never opens fullscreen.

I really don't care about that and could live with it as the app works like it should until I leave it foreground and turn off the screen. As soon as I turn my screen back on my phone hangs up and there is no possibility to get to home screen or go back. It happens from time to time, not every time I use it. Power button just turns the screen on/off and my only option is to press power+volume up buttons to reboot the phone.
I remember I was able to adjust full screen behavior for my apps in the previous versions of Android somewhere in settings. Now that option has gone in A12.
Any ideas?
I don't have an Android TV, but I just wanted to let you know your link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote doesn't work for me.
checked, the link works for me. Anyway I mean this app

Weird. Google must have it blocked unless you actually own one. On both the phone (Wi-Fi and Mobile Data) and the computer the link doesn't work and I can't find that app listed when I search for it by name.
Anyway, I know it's not relevant (I guess), just weird.

Another glitch? Unfortunately not the last one.
BTW, I just tried to open that link in chrome incognito mode
What's going on, Google? Is the app account-specific? Is it not available for everybody?
I just realized what the problem is. The app is really abandoned and it's obvious from my 2nd screen.

The reason I like it is an ability to enter login/pass details on my Android TV using my phone screen. This is the feature I was envious of iPhone users for its native integration into Apple TV.
Ok, RIP.
My only options are to get used to manual reboots or Force Stop the app after each use.
My understanding is that "Android TV Remote" is actually obsolete, and its functionality has been incorporated into "Google Home": https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chromecast.app
The standalone Android TV Remote app has been decommissioned by Google. The functionality has been moved to the Google Home app and is available as a Quick Settings tile

Ah! That's helpful to know.

Not a glitch. Stop spreading misinformation. This is a perfect example of why half the complaints on this forum are bogus.
It is a frustrating change though in the very least, because who needs all the bloat of "home" when all you want is a remote control?
Anyway, I just ordered a couple of ADT-3's, which is the "developer" version of ccgtv. I'm tired of being locked out, and I don't give a flying f*** about netturds. Years ago I wrote a remote service for nexus player, which shouldn't be too hard to adapt to ADT-3.

Well, from Google's perspective, it is logical to have it as part of the Google Home app. Android TV/Chromecast is part of the Google Home (devices) ecosystem.
That being said, if you don't want to use the Google Home app, there is an alternative
Android TV Remote - Apps on Google Play
Unofficial Android TV / Google TV remote control. Simple, convenient, complete!
play.google.com

Thanks, I know there are several alternatives by other developers but I always do my best to go google Just figured out how to enable Open Remote button in Google Home app at 3 different android tv boxes I own - Shield Pro, Onn TV and Dynalink TV. I had to manually update Android TV Remote Service to v.5.
Now I've got almost the same features, at least I can still enter text remotely on my phone.
