[Q] if i install new update on my vzw xplay will i lose root - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi i just rooted and installed a custom theme from uot theme kitchen and noticed there was an update (current installed version is 2.3.2) and was wondering if i accepted it, would i lose root, and more importantly would i mess up my phone because i have a custom theme?

Last time I checked the 2.3.3 Update is not available for VZW, unless you are talking about a different update. Please keep me posted as well.

well acording to my phone there is an update available (could be a new kernel) but shortly after recieving the notification for the 10th time i bought titanium backup pro (best 7 bucks ever spent on my phone by the way) i put "updateinstaller" in a bloat freezer and it hasn't bugged me since

so any idea if it'll mess up my phone?

If you update to 2.3.3 and your are rooted it will brick your phone for sure happened to me a couple days ago. If you want the update you would need to unroot and then get update and re root but I'm not worried about updating I'm a fan of my phone now so I won't be doing it any time soon maybe once ICS is out and there's a root method out.

unrooting or relocking

In what I have experienced, the phone bricks after unrooting and installing the update. I was wondering do I need to relock the bootloader. Unrooting alone still produces a paper weight.
Update: Locking the BL and updating worked. 2.3.3 working well unrooted. Seems the problem was with the flashtool.

I just updated and all I had to do was relock bootloader, it will wipe root by itself and when the update is done just unlock and reroot with same methods

What happens if you get the Froyo 2.2 update?

If one of us happens to get the update, and want to keep root....what do you want us to do with the update?
Don't install it. I'm not sure how to do that with an Android device.
However if it does get installed you will lose root. It could also cause some problems if it gets pushed to your phone.
The devs will have a rooted version of the rom before they will have a root method for the rom.
I think it is safe to say, if you want to keep Root, ignore the update prompt, and wait for the developers here to make rooted versions of the ROM.
The original firmware was rooted before the phone came out. (I don't know how long it took developers to actually Root the phone, since I don't know how long they had the developers release in their hands).
When the 1.47 OTA came out, it broke root, and became a mad scramble to try to re-root the phone. If I remember right, it took a couple weeks to find the workaround that would allow root.
It is a good bet that the new release WILL break root again, and there is no telling how long it will be before it can be rooted again, if ever.
is this a serious question? most updates will remove all hacked/homebrew stuff been hapning since the begining of time.......(i.e. PSP, Nintendo Wii, iPhone/touch......)just dont update...take this stuff to yahoo answers.

Update lose root. Period. Just wait.
ohh geez, be prepared for all of the topics like "just updated to sprints official froyo update and lost root can i root it back?" my gawd its gonna get annoying
i guess this is a noob question, but how long does it take to get a rooted stock rome of this 2.2? i would assume not too long correct?
usually same day.. its all about patience which there is little of.. i can guarantee you will have a stock rooted rom by this weeks end

[Q] will a sys update mess up a stock rooted phone(2.2 froy or cause it to lose root?

saw on a friends phone that a system software update to phone is available...He canceled and wanted to know if updating would cause loss of root or any other effect..
bump. i've actually been wondering about this myself. any help would be greatly appreciated!
yes, installing an OTA update will almost assuredly wipe out your root.
I'm rooted, tried to update ota and it goes through the motions like it's gonna work, then just stops and gives me the exclamation point! I think you have to unroot first. I just installed latest RUU and now I'm updated and rooted.
wouldnt the best security feature for sprint be to build the update in a way that wont update your phone if your rooted? is this already the case?

Which root method should I use

Hi guys I have another question and I am thinking I may be able to acheieve re-root by using unrevoked, but I am unsure.
My system:
Version -2.15
PRI -2.15
Software version 5053-651-1
System - 2.3.3
Kernel version - 2.6.35.10-g13578ee
The above is the current information on my phone which has an update available but I haven't performed that task yet. My question I know there is a new root for those which have upgraded to the new gingerbread, but if am correct I don't thing my replace phone has been upgraded yet with the above information listed. Since I knew I was getting a replacement phone i assumed the software info would show it as ver 2.16 which requires the new rooting method? Am I correct in this assumpstion? Also since my system hasn't been updated yet can I still use UNrevoked3 to re-root? I know it seems lenghtly but I was attempting to be clear as possible to get the best answer before I proceeded with either the rooting method or the update.
Only way is for you to root is to use revolutionary.io only way for gingerbread
Should I update my phone before I root then?
Hey,
Yeah you will need to use revolutionary, but dont worry just google it you will get youtube videos walking you how to do it.
No do not update your phone, updates can always patch things and make rooting impossible (Sadface), just jump right in follow the instructions and you will be rooted and flashing roms in no time! just one piece of advice when you are rooted NEVER EVER accept an OTA update otherwise you might just kill your root, or worse D:!
Goodluck my friend! if you need anything just pm me!

You could root then just flash the latest stock rooted rom. Its up to you really I would just root now instead of updating
Yes I too learned that you must root first, a few months ago i accepted the Gingerbread update - mistake. Oh well, now im rooted using revolutionary.io
It was so easy, literally a few settings in the phone, install the driver, start rev.io, plug in your phone, type in your license key, done. reboot and ROM that *****
Happy ROMming

Will I still be able to upgrade to ICS if I root my phone?

Hi, I'm really tired of all the custom software installed on my xplay that I don't use and would like to root my phone so I can get rid of it. My only fear is that I will have trouble updating to ICS once it is released.
I know I would be able to flash the ROM manually once it's posted here but I don't like relying on that, I'd prefer to do it the "official" way.
Is there a way to unroot your phone so you can use the vendor provided update method? If not, can someone explain to me the process of applying an official update to a rooted phone?
Thanks
Rooting the phone only adds a few files to the phone giving it root permissions.
I got my phone as 2.3.3 from rogers, rooted it. Then I updated it the official way to 2.3.4. It removed the root permissions, but it updated fine, then I just rooted it again.
You shouldn't have a problem.
And if all else fails, reflash back to the stock rom, then update.

[Q] Will the new Tmobile software update affect my rooted SGH-T989

Yesterday I received a message from Tmobile that there is a new software update for my phone. I was at work and did not want to bother with it so I tried to say not to the update and the only option is to postpone for a maximum of 1 day. To get out of the message I selected the home key. I keep getting the reminder every 4 hours and the message will not go away from notifications drop down screen.
Tmobile seems very eager to push this update out, I rooted my phone about a month ago so I could use the tethering feature when I'm on call without the extra expense, also used Titanium to freeze the bloatware apps as well. Will this software update affect or undo my root access? Does anyone know if the update is good or bad?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Yes you will lose root but it can be rooted easily using the same method. This question has been answered over and over try searching a bit.

Thank you for the information I did see threads on the subject but they were on older software updates.I did not run across one that talked about this latest update, I did not know if there was something different or if the the new update made it difficult to re-root. Some updates may only be beneficial to Tmobile and not the end user. Does anyone have the specifics on the update? Pros and Cons?
I'd like to know if the update is worth it as well.
My phone is currently rooted but I was not the one who did it so I'm afraid to lose root because I wouldn't know how to re-root it.
Is there a way to update without losing root?
I went ahead and updated my phone and it did not undo root. It is a software update that will allow u to upgrade to ICS.

You sure about that? If updating to the UVLDE 2.3.6 GB via OTA, I am pretty sure you lost root. You probably still have the super user app installed, but that in and of itself does not ensure root. Try using a app that requires root access such as Titanium Backup.
