[Q] anybody else notice the notch... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

in the top of the battery cover in pictures? is that a hole for a second mic for noise cancellation? i can't find any mention of it anywhere nor speculation. what do you guys think?

That's what I thought when I saw it. Should be the other mic.

can you post the pic here?

Its hard to see in this pic but its about an inch to the left of the fingernail slot in this pic. Most pics it hard to see but once you know where its you will notice it and wonder what it is about.

I voided my warranty and your mum.

That's very hard to tell

Look around at other pics and videos. Its there. Once you see it youll see it everywhere.
I voided my warranty and your mum.

That's the back-cover release indent...?

No. Thats is an indented slot. On the actual battery cover about ¾ inch away from that slot is a notch.
I voided my warranty and your mum.

I see what you mean, second mic for noise cancellation would be a good bet, its in the right kinda place to pickup background or wind noise to cancel out.

Thats what we are trying t o figure out. No mention of second mic from google. And i believe the nexus s didnt have a second mic. Noise cancellation is a great feature for a phone these days. You really miss it, actually the people you talk to, after youve had a phone that has it.

Considering that the sgs2 has noise cancelling, i would imagine that the nexus has it.
It wouldn't supprise me
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

Not necessarily, but it would be dumb to leave it out again. That was one of the biggest selling features google pushed from the nexus one days.
I voided my warranty and your mum.

Probably the second mic dedicated to Audience Noise Cancellation like the GSII.

It could also be the mic for the camera.

It might also be for the speaker. Isn't that where it is for the SGS2?
That little hole between the headphone jack and microUSB should be the primary mic, right?

Maybe is for the barometer!

its the noice cancel mic. its standards isue sins nexus S.
the recording of voice will be done trough the normal mic.and probably both mics for video recording.
the barometer on the other hand, does not need an output hole or w/e

Do our Epics have 2 mics?
People cannot hear me on a call unless I'm in speakerphone. It seems as though they can hear me blowing into the mic during a regular call if I blow into the hole on the bottom right (plz hold the 6th grade jokes).

I don't think we have two mics. I believe that the sensitivity of the mic is increased when in speakerphone mode.
Interesting, perhaps I have something stuck deep inside.
Or I have a setting snafoo, though I doubt it, since I have clean wipe flashed 4 roms in the past 24 hours.

Anyway to up the sensitivity manually until I can figure it out?

I had a similar (actually opposite issue) as the OP. When I was on speakerphone, no one could hear me. But when I held and spoke on the phone the traditional away (in other words phone up to my ear and not on speakerphone), then people could hear me. Tried reflashing EC05 then OTA to EI22 and that did not fix the issue. Determined it was a hardware issue. Ended up going to Sprint and having phone replaced (I had TEP).
I read recently, maybe today, that our phones have two mics. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I read that, so I can't back it up with a source! Based on the description of both of your problems, it seems logical that the phone has and uses two different mics depending on whether the user is in speakerphone mode or not.
This phone indeed does have two mics. The second microphone is used only for speaker phone, and is located in the right hand portion of the earpiece grille.
What's unfortunate is that although that mic is part of an array that includes the front camera and keyboard and is easily replaceable, the main microphone is on the board and requires the phone to be swapped.

This is actually a pretty common symptom of bad mics that come in to our store: no one can hear you talk or even yell, but for some reason, the mic will pick you up blowing in to it. I suspect its because your simply putting more physical pressure on the mic, but I've never been able to come to a good conclusion.

partly correct- it's on the board with the keyboard, but not the camera, and doesn't require a phone swap. the circuit board can be replaced; i watched the tech replace mine, in store, in about 15 minutes. i was impressed they had the part in stock.

[Q] Does your GNII wobble/rock when it's laying on a flat surface?

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a GNII. Since it's pretty big, I'll probably be using it while laying it on a flat surface.
Watching this review, I got a bit worried:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=VdsMwGWvhO4#t=205s
Doe anyone else's GNII behave like that? if so, is it very noticeable/annoying?
Thanks.
Yes, they all do it if they are bare. The speaker grill has a raised hump on it so that is not touching the desk so the sound on speaker phone isn't muted.
It's a design feature not a fault.
The video reviewer is a fud if he didn't realise that.

Thanks for that info.
So the more import question is, is it noticeable or annoying? Will I be able to live with it?
With a nice dual layer case, it sits flat and has no wobbles.
-----
I would love to help you, but help yourself first: ask a better question
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
I have mine in one case or another so don't notice it but I could see if could be annoying if you had your phone flat on a table and you are typing on it.
Realistically though would it not be in a case? Even the thinist of cases would hide it.
But then you won't hear the speaker as well
Sent from my Samsung Note II.
Yeah, I guess you're right. I think I'll also be getting a case when I get my GNII.
Thanks guy

Slight rattle noise

Does anyone else have a slight rattle noise coming from the camera area/back corner? You cant really hear it unless you tap on the back of the tablet lightly. My old(2012) nexus doesnt make this sound and not sure if this is normal on the new 1s or not.
i hear a tapping noise when i tap on it.
come on man, do you buy products to find problems? do not make this into the screen lifting issue with the first nexus 7. noone needs you exchanging yours a hundred times taking away possible purchases from other people.
Pretty sure it's normal. Same noise on my Nexus 4.
please dont start star the "screen lift" saga of 2012 with the 2013 model some people look for things wrong.. if you have buyers remorse take it back.
its the camera. you will notice that on a lot of devices with cameras. my Gnex does this, my wifes Droid Razr HD does this as well. my thunderbolt did it too. pretty sure it is something inside the camera housings.
dont tap there. its nothing to worry about.
i swear, the only time i find stuff wrong with my electronics is when OTHER people point them out.

My GNex doesnt make this particular sound, it makes a sound from the cover not being flush with the back tho.
Either way not a big deal, was just wondering if it was normal or not.
ridiculous mentality from some people here. A LOT of users, me included, go to forums like XDA to learn about potential build flaws because some of us actually care about getting quality controlled devices for our money. I actually didn't buy the Nexus 10 because of all the reports, both from forums and in reviews, about the bleeding, and I'm grateful for all those reports.
Just because you'd happily pay for a product with obvious defects and then defend the manufacturer to the bone like it was your employer doesn't mean everyone have that attitude. In the year 2012 gluing a screen to a bezel shouldn't have been a problem.
I'm not saying the OP has discovered a flaw here but any report of potential flaws is appreciated by someone like me and your overly defensive mentality is sad to see. Don't decide for others what a flaw is cause it is highly subjective.

i agree with that. its just some times (like the N7 screen lift saga) the defect isn't even noticeable until someone points it out to you.

my volume rocker is solid, definitely seems like its coming from the camera.
Its the camera lenses. Perfectly normal. All cameras do this to some extent.
My galaxy nexus doesn't.... But remember it having a 0 shutter lag. Maybe it has a unique camera or something. Most other cameras click when tapped.

does anyone else have it as bad as me?
I hear it even if i put if I put it down lightly.
example: flat on table with something soft under, pick up top area around 1cm and give it a little force pushing it down.
my first 1 was definitely louder than the replacement, i could hear it through the box. my replacement still does it when i place it on my lap or table, but its not as bad.
im pretty sure all of them do it. so if you dont have any of the other issues(dead pixel/QI not working etc) people are mentioning i would just keep it.

Hey,buddy.
I am confused about this , i mean , my nexus 7 has the identical issue even it is a very very slight tap...
Is it similar to yours?
not only the camera area but also the upper part of back cover...
it seems to be a normal to make the noise from the camera lens. i wouldnt worry about it too much.
I am still confused why some others have said they dont have the sound tho.

if you purchased the device from Verizon you can def get a refurb warranty replacement, I highly recommended dealing with customer service rather than go to the store, (they can give u a new phone anyway unless within 14 days so it's a wasted trip)
1-800-922-0204, just press 0 until it asks for ur billing password and it'll bring you to a rep.
Will be no issues getting refurb with blown speakers.
If wasn't bought from Verizon then I'd call HTC see if they fix for free. I've never sent to HTC, only gotten refurbs from VZW, so no idea how HTC handles these things.
Best of luck!

I have had two different Ones blow speakers so far. I work in a metal fab/welding shop and the top speaker collects ferrous dust very quick. But, Verizon has sent me two refurb units with no problems. I ended up cutting a screen protector up to cover the speaker grilles and have had good luck since.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I've had the speaker issue. I believe that mine was also due to metallic dust exposure. Oddly enough, I haven't had a phone with that problem since the original Droid Incredible days. My Thunderbolt, Rezound, and DNA all seemed immune to any speaker distortion issues.
I bought my ONE through Best Buy, so I went through them instead of Verizon or HTC for a replacement/warranty. What a pain in the butt, they replaced it for free, but the replacement phone was refurbished and the screen is not level with the speaker grills. I am not thrilled with the build quality of the replacement, but at least everything works as it should.
I'm telling you, the screen protector with a few tiny holes poked in it is the trick! It does muffle the sound slightly, but the amount of metal that it keeps out is amazing. Just the amount of dust that finds it's way into my pocket is crazy.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Fix it with a magnet...
I've had this happen on multiple phones from my Inc 1 and up to my HTC One.
I take a magnet I've removed from an old hard drive, and then crank the music while moving the magnet around by the speaker openings. I always pull out some really tiny particles, and have fixed multiple speakers using this method.
Those that have gotten a refurbished device did you relock and return to stock before sending back. I'm having the same issue with my speaker and my headphone jack not working properly. Thanks.
I returned my phone's to the stock ROM, recovery and locked the bootloader but left them s-off when I returned them.

I think it's an extremely strange design choice to not have front facing speakers on any phone (not just the Pixel). If I need to use the phone speaker(s), I really can't think of any situation where I would want the sound pointed away from me. I don't have any of my home stereo or TV speakers facing the wall or floor, and I wouldn't want the same in a phone when I'm trying to consume content. It seems similar to having speakers in your car installed on the outside facing away from you. If I'm having a conversation with someone, I don't talk to the floor or turn around and talk away from the person. I don't understand what benefit the bottom or rear facing speakers give anyone.
Also, I'm sure it's not this simple for the designers and engineers, but on the Pixel, if the speakers are already at the bottom of the phone, wouldn't it seem simple to just have them pointing towards you, instead of down? They could be installed in literally the same place, just with a different orientation.
I'm hoping when they single firing that they mean it's just a single firing into the space into the bottom part of the phone and comes out both speakers. It's mono sound but at least it comes out both slits instead of just one. Wishful thinking though. I feel like they had a spec wishlist that they created back in 2014 or something.

Hmmm, now that I think of it, it could be for the microphone. Here's the video where I noticed it... He even plays some music.

There is only one speaker....I think the bottom right....but there are two holes just like the iPhone....it is there for symmetry. Just like the top bezel is the size it needs to be to accommodate headphone jack and other stuff....so for symmetry they made the bottom bezel the same size. I wish it was unsymmetrical for the bezel and had a smaller bezel...hence lager screen size with the same phone dimensions.
