APK method
Prerequisites
You need:
(NOT in the US only) A rooted device
(NOT in the US only) Market Enabler
A device running Android 4.0.2+
com.google.android.apps.walletnfcrel.apk saved on your device
General Instructions
Pull down the notification bar and hit the settings icon next to the date. Then choose "About phone" at the bottom. If "Android version" is NOT listed as "4.0.2", "4.0.3" or "4.0.4", you need to update to a new version. Do that before continuing.
Now, what needs to happen next depends on where you are:
I'm not in the US!
If you're NOT in the US, you'll need to be rooted. Grab Market Enabler from the Android Market and install it.
Run Market Enabler and set yourself as "US T-Mobile".
Now follow the US instructions.
I'm in the US!
Open the Wallet APK on your phone e.g. using ASTRO/File Expert/Root Explorer/the download manager.
Now just open Wallet, and it should correctly authorise.
Troubleshooting
Help! Google Wallet says "Unsupported Device!"
This means that you're on a rooted device, and is perfectly normal. Transactions will still work - it's just Google's way of letting you know that you may be less secure than you would be normally, as rooted apps will be able to access Google Wallet internal files. Be vigilant when approving root access!
Secure Element not responding!
If you have a Nandroid backup of a version of Wallet that worked, try restoring to that. Otherwise, you're screwed unless you get a new device. The Secure Element in your phone has now locked you out.
EDIT: research seems to show that Android is not actually enabling NFC-EE, which might be why it can't communicate with the SE. This needs further research.
To try to avoid this, before flashing a new ROM please, please, PLEASE: open Google Wallet. Open the Wallet Settings menu. Select "Reset Google Wallet" from within the app. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS SELECTING "CLEAR DATA" FROM WITHIN MANAGE APPS!
The Google Wallet reset system will disable it's background services, reset the secure element by deleting the Google Wallet applet (which is what you want!), clear the database, ping C2DM that it is now deprovisioning, clear the shared preferences, clear files and cache, and finally shut itself down. Clearing data from Manage Apps will only delete the database and shared preferences: it will not deprovision, disable background services, and most importantly will not remove the Wallet applet from the secure element.
Insufficient Privileges. Insufficient secure element privileges for this system image (release-keys)
Err, what? This should only occur if you previously used the ZIP method. If so, you'll need to manually restore the old versions of the files.
This can be achieved by either restoring a Nandroid backup from before you flashed OR by following instructions in this post.
I have something not answered here!
Post in this topic and it'll probably get answered pretty quickly.
I restored a backup and Wallet isn't working
Try uninstalling then reinstalling the APK. This should get the SE back in sync with the Wallet status.

Rewrote OP from scratch.

Haha, you packaged and released it

Lukegb,
Does this zip include the Wallet (1).apk you had me flash in the other thread? With that I was able to successfully add my Citi card where as before it continued to force close.

It should do.

I restored to my stock backup, did a wipe and confirmed it working on stock ROM (I was originally only getting success in MoDaCo ROM.)

Adding Funds
I flashed the zip you posted in the original Google Wallet forum earlier today after wiping cache/formatting etc and this worked fine on the stock rom, I now have my $10 pre paid card all set up.
Have any of you worked out a way to add funds to this card or is the Citi card the only way to use this more often?
Thanks for all your work

To add funds to your Google Prepaid card:
1) On your device, open Wallet app.
2) Choose Payment Cards.
3) Tap the Google paypass card.
4) Choose Add Funds

I am in the UK and the add funds section has the country locked to the US with no option to change it

Did any of you use Wallet on a Nexus S?
I had been using it, and I had added $25 of my own funds back then, bought something, and I had like $23 left in my wallet.
I did successfully get this Wallet working on my Galaxy Nexus (thank you!!!) but when I added the Google pre-paid, it gave me a new card (the last 4 digits are different than what I had prior) and I just have the $10 for signing up.
I'm guessing it's also tied somehow to hardware?

I need to look into this, because Google has been giving me a new user ID every time I've reinstalled the app...

This was the first time installing it on my Galaxy Nexus. I "installed" it numerous times on my Nexus S though and every time I had to sign back into it, it always gave me the same user ID/correct funds.

Could someone tell me how to flash this thing? I have clockwork mode but the ""flash zip from sd card" shows me some weird layout of folders..

Sorry, I've managed to get it working now, it's all fine.

Is there any chance an APK will be released that will be installed on a stock ROM? I really don't want to root just to do this since it'll wipe my phone and I'll have to start over also want to keep the phone stock for a bit.

I think you will need to wait for google with out root

The only way I see that working is if Google release it.
You need to either flash this after doing a wipe or by modifying.
The only was I can see you managing to do this is if you unlock the bootloader (which will wipe your phone anyway), then boot into CWM (not flash) and then install the zip.
Then when you reboot your phone, CWM will be gone and you should get a stock ROM with Wallet installed.
No idea if that would work though

flashed zip after flashing Ir3 and all seems well. $10 free cash available. unable to "add funds" though.

Is GWallet safe yet?

I've been fretting about this for far too long and I want my question laid to rest for once and for all.
I am running stock 4.0.2 rooted and boot loader unlocked. I want to install the google wallet apk without worrying about it messing up and giving me the secure element error. Can someone please aid a fellow ever-worrying flasher?
And yes, I have a backup to rely on.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
There's no guarantees. Essentially to be absolutely safe you need to wait until Google releases something official.
The error occurs after installing another rom with a wipe or after a factory reset. The theory is to make sure to press reset within Google Wallet so that it deletes the info off the Secure Element's memory. This is still just a theory, no guarantee..
You should watch the main thread for the most up to date info http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365360
To add to Royal2000H:
Even if you reset Google Wallet from within the app, it will still re-initialise the secure element. There's an ADB shell command that will reset it properly.

You need to download and install the Android SDK (software development kit). The ADB (Android device bridge) drivers and software are included with it. Sorry I don't have a link handy for you, maybe in the morning if someone else hasn't posted one.

perhaps make a backup then of your working ROM. cause i believe if you wipe or switch ROMs something happens that resets the NFC hardware and you may lose ability to use it again. i'm not totally sure of the details exactly though.
I have another experience to add to this thread.
Today my phone got stuck on the boot animation so I reloaded my current 4.03 ROM. When the device booted up after flashing the gapps.zip I tried using my NFC for a tag but it wouldn't work. Additionally, trying to access the "more..." settings menu froze the settings program.
At this point I tried multiple ROMS etc and had no luck getting my NFC to work until I restored my nandroid backup from long before wallet, the first day I got the phone.
I then flashed back to my 4.03 ROM and everything works fine until the Gapps.zip adds wallet which breaks the NFC again. Removing wallet from the .zip makes everything ok but there is apparently no way for me to get wallet working again. I tried the ADB command and everything, but whenever I reinstall wallet wallet itself just opens to a black screen that is frozen and it destroys my NFC(plus the settings freeze)
Is there anything else I can try? Is my secure element bricked forever(meaning I should exchange)? Or should I hold on until google releases an official .apk?
Thanks for posing the question
I actually, using a link from here, installed Google Wallet and It is working just fine for me but my phone is stock rom and unrooted (LTE Edition), So I'll be paying close attention to this thread because I might decide to root this phone in the future.

[SPRINT] Google Wallet - Error adding card - Google Prepaid [Resolution]

So if your like me you got your Sprint Galaxy Nexus, opened up Wallet and activated it to get your $10 and waiting for that $40 to come through. Well after you unlock your bootloader it wipes your phone out. Well some time between then and the initial activation your account becomes stuck.
You reboot and you go to activate Google Wallet again and you see "Unauthorized Device" which doesn't really mean anything but after you try to add the prepaid Google card again it says "Error adding card".
The only solutions I have found thus far to avoid/fix this is:
1) Unlock the bootloader BEFORE you activate wallet, this will work fine for you and you won't have this issue.
2) Go into Google Wallet Settings > Reset Google Wallet Account then unlock the bootloader
3) Call up google wallet, have them connect you with Money Network and request that your account be reset. They will ask if you are rooted or not and ask for your MEID and will submit a ticket to have someone look at it and determine if it should be reset.
Money Network Direct Number - 855-896-0693
I am currently waiting to have mine reset but just a PITA so if you have already activated your google wallet you can probably expect this to happen.
If anyone else has found any other solutions please respond. Other than creating a new account I do not see another way to fix this. I have cleared data etc and reset google wallet account via app, none of that works.
[EDIT] I even relocked the bootloader and removed root, still couldn't get my card to add. I think some poeple's accounts are getting stuck and some aren't.
Screenshot:
http://db.tt/qm0kx7aK
*EDIT* After getting on the phone with Money Network and having them put in a ticket for the account reset my Wallet is fixed. This means your account is stuck in an infinite loop of adding the card.

i just relocked the bootloader, still retained root somehow, mightev been because i flashed it through cwm recovery.
and bam, wallet works again. i tested it yesterday by adding those 10 bux to my radioshack gift card at work on our pos system, and it worked.
I locked my bootloader again and removed root and I still couldn't add my prepaid card.
I have a question to see if anyone else has done this. After I activated my phone but did not setup up any Google account info, I went ahead and unlocked the bootloader but did flash CWM or root. With the bootloader unlocked I activated my Google account and the Google wallet. Everything has worked so far, even adding a prepaid card. My question is if I flash su/root from CWM now will I lose my Google Wallet? I do not have to unlock the bootloader as I did that first but have yet to flash root. Anyone have any ideas. I may just wait till I can use the $50 then flash root to be on the safe side.

No you won't if all you are doing is rooting. On the other hand anytime you do something like what the OP did and it involves resetting your device, you need to go into the wallet app and select "Remove card" for any cards you have added. If you don't you run the risk of having the problem the OP has or worse the dreaded secure element error which at this point is currently unfixable.

Yes you should be fine. Hopefully people will see this and not do as I did, mine is still not fixed. I will have to keep calling Money Network and hope they do something about it. I will keep this thread updated if they do fix it and how I did it. I need my $50
Good luck on getting this fixed. I hope that Google comes up with a better way of running Google Wallet
because there are a lot of users that will root their device and still want to keep using G Wallet.
Sure it might be a security risk but it is one the the user should have to face on his on.
Root isn't to blame, you can use while rooted. It's the fact that not removing the card or account from your phone before resetting after unlock just messes up the account. I guess it thinks it's still active so you can't add a card that is already active. So money network has to reset it.

So you are saying that it is the Factory reset of the device during the unlocking of the bootloader that is causing the problem.
Just having su is installed/flashed does not cause any problem.
If I understand you correctly if you deactivate you card/account before the unlock the bootloader
then you might be ok, as you would have to create a new account when you start back up.
The problem isn't the unlocking or rooting of your phone. The problem is that when you flash another rom or wipe/reset the device you are supposed to use the reset option in Google wallet in order for you to be able to reactivate the card after you have flashed. Using the search tool in xda will show you that there are a bunch of threads where people have this same problem and the only way to avoid it is to back up the app+data and/or make a nandroid and try restoring that way(if you are running into errors). But for future references always use the reset button. I myself reset and activate without issue. The error is in no way a flaw in their system. What you're doing can be basically compared to having a regular debit card. Activating it and then trying to activate it again. Obviously problems will arise.

Exactly. This was confirmed by Money Network that it was stuck in an infinite loop trying to add the card.
So now it is fixed!

Yes, when you activate Google Wallet on your GNex they MEID is recorded and then that is what Sprint will go by to deposit the $40 onto your Prepaid Google Card

this 100%....... verizon/sprint/gsm it doesnt matter. I dont care if you are flashing a rom, unlocking your device or rooting it. please for the love of god reset the damn app before doing anything at all otherwise risk murdering your wallet as the thing is prone to die from breathing on it too heavily from the pure enjoyment you have from seeing cashiers freak out
I won't have my replacement/new GN till later this afternoon, so I can't check this myself. My GW/nfc is so corrupted/destroyed that I can't even go into Settings>More Options because it will not open. The screen turns black, freezes and force closes.
So with all that said, when people say you have to reset the GW app, do the app itself have a reset feature or do you mean go into setting>apps>GW> and wipe data/cache?
Reset it from within wallet. There's an option.

I know it wont fix the issue it prevents it. Supposed to do it before wiping /resetting roms. Some asked which way you're supposed to reset it. Via the app - not clearing data in app manager.

After seeing people struggle and research, this appears to still block Google Wallet from completely setting up and initializing. The regular SIM cards do not do it, but the ISIS or NFC appears to be doing the damage. I am not sure if it is possible to switch to a non NFC SIM, but you are more than likely OUT OF LUCK with this SIM Card...Remember this does not guarantee success, but if you hit a wall and just can't get any luck it is a last ditch effort and probable cause to your issues

TROUBLESHOOTING
1) Insufficient Secure Element Privileges for system image (release-keys).
If you've been trying to run Google Wallet on your USA variant Note II you've probably ran into some problems. like this one..
"Insufficient secure element privileges for this system image (release-keys)."
why is this happening? check HERE for more detail.
But for the sake of keeping everything together in this thread..
2) Google Wallet controller applet version says "not present"
1. Open Google Wallet
2. Hot Menu Soft Key
3. Find About
It should not say Not Present
If It says "Not Present"
You need to do a nand restore of the ROM you had Google Wallet running on and hit reset Google Wallet. Then You can restore or flash a new ROM and restart the process. If you Do not have a Nand Backup where Google Wallet was working, you may never be able to use Wallet again
3) Device Not Ready. Wallet is unable to proceed until this device is fully initialized. Make sure the device has network access and try rebooting if the problem persists.
I have just gone through the whole set up process trying to use the Galaxy Sprint Note II build.prop and the above error message occurred. I could not even reset Google Wallet on my phone unless I changed my build.prop to the Galaxy Nexus which is the one in this OP. If you are having issues, Only use the Galaxy Nexus build.prop if you are not already doing that
Step 1. Change your build.prop to the settings in the Primary Method (Do not reboot after you finished)
Galaxy Nexus
ro.product.device=maguro
ro.product.model=Galaxy Nexus
ro.product.name=yakju
Step 2. Download Titanium Backup
Step 3. Use Titanium Backup to wipe Google Wallet App Data and Cache or the built in Application Manager
Step 4. Reboot to Recovery
Step 5. Wipe Cache / Dalvick Cache 3x
Step 6. Reboot
Step 7. Set Up Google Wallet until 100% completion with card added
Step 8. Revert to original build.prop
AT&T Note II
ro.product.model=SAMSUNG-SGH-I317
ro.product.name=t0lteatt
product.device= t0lteatt
Step 9. Reboot
Should be Good to Go. I just completed the whole process
FIX: DO NOT USE ANY OTHER BUILD.PROP CONFIGS. ONLY USE WHAT IS IN THIS OP.
4) "Device Setup Failed"
Once your stuck at 'Device setup failed' you need to reset your wallet from the web. Then change your build.prop to Nexus. Reboot, retry wallet and it should register correctly, after that you can change back your build.prop.
1. Go to Google Wallet Online

Just to assess my 2¢. I flash another Rom. Wipe my phone completely out no trace of wallet. Then start the set up. Kept getting device not set up, wouldn't add my card. That was my only problem. After I changed the actual GW apk. Works on what ever I try to set up on. I even reset it, wipe the device clean again just to see if it would work. Bam good to go!!
Here's what I did too get mine to work. And yes I do have the xposed installer installed!!

Well you can download the Google Wallet App straight from the market once you change your build.prop, but you need to have xposed and the wallet module already installed and running and once you install xposed you then need to hit install again so it actually works all the way. Good job getting it working

What ROM are you running, You flashed NFC Libs as well. Also, does it get past the setting up for 5 mins, you pick your gmail account, enter password, enter pin number or set up then get to the point to add a card? What happens at that point, you try doing it on LTE? Need some more info to try and help

Working Tap and Pay In Google Wallet

Ok so I can now confirm that Tap and Pay in google Wallet can work.
Just used it and am Drinking Redbull Purchased from 7-Eleven 10 mins ago.
I used the attached modified APK ( done by Loserskater) from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45710314&postcount=3276
Quick step by step
I am using EclipticOne Rom
1 Go to Manage apps and delete all data for installed wallet app
2 Used Titanium to uninstall app since it is a system app.
3 Reboot to recovery and wipe Dalvik Cache (and as safety measure I also wiped Cache not sure it's ness)
4 Used ES file explorer (root explorer will do the job as well) And Moved modded apk to system/app and changed permissions to rw- r-- r--
5 reboot phone
6 open wallet let it do its thing And when finished top box on screen said setup Tap and Pay so i did so. ( should mention I already have wallet acct and used on S3 previously so did not need to add or pick a card)
7 app said setting up tap and pay this will take several minutes. Closed app set phone down did other things for about 10mins. Came back opened app said tap and pay is setup !!!!
8 went to settings>about and saw Device is ready for tap and pay purchases under the Tap And Pay heading.
9 closed app and updated via play store since current version is 14 not 9 like modded apk
10 reboot Profit !!! Ran to store got redbull for busy night ahead
Again this MOD is not mine it was done by Loserskater
I should mention I have a the NFC sim from Verizon. Not sure if it is required would need input from those without it. I suspect it is as it supposedly has a secure element of its own.
P.S. Do not Log out of Wallet after update it will likely stop working if you do
Wow its actually says it works... Will update when I actually try it out. Thanks man. Oh and I'm also using EclipticONE.

Just verified that this method does NOT work on the stock rom. I'm probably going to hold out for a Venom release but just wanted to verify that this does not work on stock.
I was under the impression that the secure element in the SIM card could not be used for Wallet but if you have it running successfully, that's awesome.

On first use of ES you need to go to tools root explorer and set it to mount system as rw (read and write ) not RO (read only )
then should be able to do it with no problem
But ES is not required Root explorer does same thing i just prefer ES
Confirmed to work on stock rom. Just used it at 7-eleven.

Looks like it's not the app but Google has finally updated the app itself. Just downloaded from the market and everything is working when tap and pay.
I'm having a problem now. I installed it on Vanir, worked perfectly.. Installed a nightly build which had force close problems so I reinstalled my ROM, which in turn uninstalled wallet, tried the exact same method as before, yet tap to pay is gone. Any ideas?

This is not true for verizon users, unless you change your prop.build manually prior to downloading from market. Essentially telling the app its a different phone

You will probably need to go to wallet on your pc and deactivate your device. Then retry making sure to wipe data from the app prior to uninstalling it. Do a full reboot then continue
I have been able to install the modfied app by flashing it right after flashing a rom (before reboot)
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
For those of you having trouble copying the app. Either open a terminal emulator or connect to your computer (preferred) and run adb shell.
Enter following command to mount system read/write and allow copy:
"mount -o remount,rw /system"
Copy the file either via shell or es file explorer.
Reboot or type: "mount -o remount,ro /system" to make sure system is read only again.
After reboot, run wallet and follow OP instructions.
I've got my phone set up and tap and pay activated. Works like a charm. I DO NOT have a NFC sim. I have my original SIM from my Thunderbolt cut down.

Was having issues with it working properly. It would copy for me, and install the app w Reboot, but 'Tap and Pay' wasn't working (even though devices showed it as a GNex).
In order to get rid of everything (I had previously tried to install it) I had to:
Install the app from the play store
THEN clear the cache/data
THEN uninstall it (I did NOT use Ti for this, I deleted it from system/apps and data/apps using Root Explorer)
I also cleared the device from Google Wallet online (Disable > Remove)
I think the prior version I tried to install had some lingering data that was bad? Who knows. Didnt really want to deal with a factory reset though..
I did NOT use the APK from this thread, I used the one from here: Method 3 - AOSP. I dont think that matters.
Worked fine after that by copying the APK then reboot. (did not wipe dalvik/cache! Though Im not sure that really matters either.)
I havent tested it in a store yet, but I cant imagine Ill run into any issues.
Running:
S-Off, Root, Cyanogenmod 10.2
Stock HTC One SIM (So, not a "secure" VZW SIM if I understand correctly)
Hope this clears things up for anyone still having issues

Thanks!! This worked perfectly on VanirAOSP. Going to try to buy a drink at the vending machine and I will report back.
EDIT: Did not work on the vending machine. I have an NFC capable credit card and that worked fine so there is nothing wrong with the machine. Disappointing!

What's weird is that nothing happens when I tap to pay. The machine doesn't recognize any contact. On the previous Google Wallet mod a month or two ago, it would register the contact but the payment would fail.
What ROM are you using?

FoxMod HTC Desire 612 First Custom ROM

EDIT
I have moved this here

How to install:
1: unzip folder to TWRP backup folder

i did not see if after donig a factory reset myself so im unsure whats causing it did you install that GSM patch? it might not get along with HTC sense or something verizon has in there i havent found yet
@fennectech,
I applied the GSM patch but im still not getting a signal although I have USSD codes.
I have restarted, factory reset and all but i'm still getting the error. I have reinstalled the ROM and am getting the same results
Please note I got the errors before I applied the GSM patch.
Something else, the camera is gone, not working
Can I request something from you, Please back up one stock ROM of a 612 and share it with me, I'd rather go back to stoc.k. My backup is messy Thank you for your noble work
I am trying to install it as well. I have TWRP installed with a 2.8.7 recovery image and when I try to peform a backup, it only brings me back to the fastboot menu. Never does an actual backup. So, therefore, there is no TWRP/backups folder to put the files in. I have tried doing a restore as well using the image but not luck. It tells me it's going to reboot but same thing, it just reboots to the fastboot menu. It is rooted and S-Off already using Sunshine
Any suggestions?
