[Q] Should i buy the Xperia Play? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So im thinking about getting it for christmas, would anyone recommend it? it's only €169.99 which is less than $200 and thats not on contract so i think its good? anyone have anything negative to say?
P.S i'm coming from xperia X8

If you like to play yourself through good old gameboy + nintendo and some playstation stuff and many new game apps and you don't want to miss nice features of a smartphone (phone, sms, mp3, navigation, internet, camera), then go for it.
I don't see any reason for me actually to buy a new smartphone. There are SOO many games playable thanks to all the emulators, but only the Xperia Play seems to be the only one so far who can be used out of the box to play (nearly) them all. The playstation keys are so great imo, I don't want to miss them. I'm currently stuck at a "Pokemon" game and my list of games I want to play when I'm on the go is SO HUGE that my Xperia Play will follow me until the buttons break out of it's case!
All other components of a smartphone are included too. ofc the processor could be faster, the camera could have a better resolution and the battery could hold a bit longer, but imo it's a very nice device.
... and the current price is a true Xmas present.
Best regards
AltFFear

The gamepad makes it the best phone for gamers. If no smartphone comes out in the next 5 years with a gamepad, then the play will still be the best phone for gamers 5 years from now.
Only non gamers would argue that fact.

and seriously?! Sony Ericsson announced support of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Xperia Play. That's awesome! With my HTC Desire I had to wait SOOO long just to hear that they aren't able to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3, I mean wtf?! Sony Ericsson made so much right here. Even the stock ROM of SE works nice and all updates are usefull. And you get so much accessory in the box, man!

I think it's smart to go to the forum where people know the device best and can highlight its real virtues.

i get what you mean but for example if someone says something like the..... the wifi drops a lot...... then i would reconsider buying cos its important to me i just wanted to make sure all the features that are important to me work well

Dont mind sour grapes there, he bought a porche but wanted a lamborghini.
Long story short, if you want a phone that is the best for playing games get this because of the gamepad makes a ridiculous difference.
If you just want a great phone that does everything perfect then keep researching other phones.
This one is for playing games, thats what it does best.
P.s.
If you get a different phone, please play some multiplayer games as us play owners will enjoy eating you for breakfast.

only problem with xperia play is your stuck mostly with emulators which are fun but after a while they get tiresome and only certain games work with them and gameloft keeps subtracting its xperia play optimised games from the market

YES
'nuff said

I'm a 5-month user.
I would say most games out there are not optimized for Xperia play, and those that are can actually be played with the touchscreen anyway (maybe not as well)
I mainly play emulators, and I see great success when playing more fast paced platformers (impossible on the touchscreen) like Megaman, and RPGs that makes use of the shoulder buttons a lot.
If these are not your type, I think there are better phones out there.
(Other issues: my play came with a lackluster battery.)

how about space? I heard the internal memory was like 400 mb? Shouldn't it going to be like few gb?
EDIT : I was planning to get Xperia Play to, currently at X8. I wanted to play games more, I saw there're a lot of games like fps. I would love to play those games. especially like Modern Combat 3.

yep its one of the cons but there's always a workaround like Link2Sd for ext partitions

Gameloft dosent sell any of its play games on the market, the ones on the market are not play optimised. You have to buy games from the gameloft wapstore.

Hi AndroHero, you seem to have a good setup - could you help me with the below please.
How big is your second partion and format do you use. I did 1gb in ext2 to achive the below

But I wonder if there is something I could do differently to have even more internal memory free like increasing the partition. Or having apps moved to sd instead of linking first and then only linking dex and lib but not apk if possible but I haven't managed to achieve that. Also having link2sd seems to make booting quite a bit slower. Maybe ext2 format is not recommended.

im looking at buying a play at the moment, however im not to certain on the actual power of the phone and how well it will handle games that are MMORPG like order and chaos.
theirs more powerful phones on the market then the play, will these play the games better then the play or is their some kind of magic that happens in the play?
I love the fact theirs a physical controller but im also not to worried on being stuck with just a touch screen controller if ive got a more powerful mobile.
someone help me make up my mind
once i get it the phone will be most likely jam packed with apps, and i love gaming.
not to worried about the PlayStation certified as most of the games ill play are on the android market

Actually, I'm just a noob. I don't really know how to set link2sd, and I heard some people saying about using adb? to set install location.

it does lack in power. but it is a pretty awesome phone trust me its a once in a life time phone.. lol you will not regret it

I would probably get an xperia play (used). if you really want a play 2 you can sell your used xperia play for roughly the same amount you bought it for (i got mine for $150 usd). Honestly i won't know what a play 2 will have to offer. Cause xperia play 1 can already emulate PS1 and n64. I highly doubt we'll ever get ps2 emulation anytime soon since PC has trouble emulating that... So yeah you'll just be able to play some 3rd party android apps a little bit faster.

Agreed. I'm gonna stick with my Xperia Play cause there's some awesome games that have been released for it.
King Of Fighters FTW !
And I read that they won't release a Play2, it only makes sense for Sony since they would 'lose' money from the emulators. So I bought the Play anyway despite I coud have saved the money for the Galaxy S III.

Nice move
IF (and its a big IF) a Play 2 is coming its at least a year away. Sony has already said they are NOT working on it yet. So I would not base my decision on that thing showing up. They may never even make one.
Every time i adhere more to TLRTheory's... Well, theory: the Xperia Play is a growing gaming platform on its own, so we shouldn't only consider it as an emulator + phone, or an Onlive controller + phone, but it has a good catalog of Android games optimized for it as well.
Sony would have to release Xperia Play 2 at some point cuase games size and quality are just getting better and wont work on the Single Core CPU plus the lack of memory..
i think every1 are willing to wait for XPeria Play 2 with good specs and larger screen

actually im not waiting for an xplay 2 im perfectly happy with it currently.
i also would not buy it if it had a larger screen as it ruins the point of it being an xperia play you might as well carry a vita if the screen was any bigger.
also specs dont bother me really i know you need them to run more demanding games but its working perfectly at the moment isnt it. dont fix it if it aint broken and we have a good year left of it not being broken

WHY DO PEOPLE THINK THIS?
The original PS2 had a 294MHz CPU but worked well because the software was designed around the hardware properly. Computers 100x as powerful will still struggle to emulate a PS2 game because they are not optimized for specific hardware or designed by the original manufacturers of the software (Sony) meaning they have to create drivers for basic things to work and then optimize them over time and also emulate the architecture of the systems CPU.
The new smartphone CPU's are powerful but the software is not optimized for them so performance can be slow.
The reason the PS1 emulator works for our phones is because optimized for the CPU/GPU combo, a PS2 emulator could do exactly the same thing on our phone now, if sony made an optimized emulator

That's not true, I remember seeing an interview with one of the heads of Sony Ericsson before they got bought over talking about what is going to happen after the buyout and one of the questions was will you release an xperia play 2 and he said, if my memory severs me right, that we are happy with sales and are working towards a 2nd.

We've been over this before. The hardware of the PS2 is much more complicated than megahertz and megabytes. It has a very complex architecture that is very difficult to emulate. What takes the PS2 1 clock tick to do takes a cpu/gpu 10 ticks. There is also concurrent processing going on inside PS2 that rely on specific timing that makes emulation even more difficult.
Long story short, a PS2 emulator will never happen for this phone. It just isn't going to happen. It has nothing to do with "optimizing" the emulator, and everything to do with the ps2 hardware being emulated.

What we are forgetting is that even the PS3 doesn't have flawless PS2 emulation. I am a late adopter to the PS3 but I have read around about people sayin only some PS2 games work on a PS3.
Now if Sony with all their money, resources and patents are struggling to produce emulation (to the point they stopped it) for the PS2 it means probably that it's a real ***** to emulate even with certified Sony hardware/software.
PSX games though work fine apparently but I am yet to try out Tekken and tell you.

Seriously! That's BS though, how will be able to play any DVD or Blu-ray discs if Sony have discontinued the optical slot. That's atrocious!
And no wonder why stores like GAME and Gamestation which survived only on tangible media are failing because many of us have diversified to Steam and the PS store.

They probably have but many games which were amazing on the PS2 have yet to see HD branding including the GTA collection (III,VC,SA), the Tony Hawk collection (THUG,THUG2,THAW) and the James Bond collection (Agent under Fire, NightFire, Everything or Nothing).
To summarise both I would say Sony aren't going the best way with this, at least Microsoft made the Xbox somewhat compatible. Anyway I have enough thread derailing for now, back onto the Xperia Play 2 which could be really awesome if Sony play their cards right!

I agree optimisation is definitely key and with smartphone specifications getting increasingly better we could see some really demanding and powerful games running on the Xperia Play at a decent framerate (the thread in the PCSX2 forum showed Grand Turismo 4 as a very demanding game and apparently never ran at full speed even on the console it was designed for).
Hold on! How do you emulate PlayStation games on an Xperia Play with the lack of L1, R2? And how will we be able to emulate PlayStation 2 games with a lack of L1, R2, L3 and R3?
I also hope that Sony are smart with specs and throw in Tegra 3 and 2GB RAM to keep everything silky smooth. All though they probably won't because of concerns over battery life <sigh>.

I use the L button for L1, the R button for R1, the left volume key for L2, the right volume key for R2, the Back button for L3 and the Search button for R3, and it works quite nicely

[Q] T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 Gaming Performance???

Hey guys I'm a loyal T-Mobile USA user and decided to purchase the international version of the GS3 instead of our very own S4 edition due to the powerful Mali GPU. Since gaming is very important to me, I was wondering how the Adreno 225 performed when running games like Nova 3, Real Soccer 2012, Modern Combat 3, Mass Effect, etc.... Can anyone tell me if they notice any lag at all? What about 1080p flash content in the browser, YouTube? Let me know guys thanks!!!

I might also add that I tried the above games:
On Stock ROM PRE-Root
On Stock ROM Rooted
On Stock ROM Rooted with Bloat removed
All give the same results, I thought it was possibly due to either the root or bloat, but doesnt appear to be the case
Also, noticed that when I restored my nandroid, while the checksum matched, and the restore completed
A LOT of my settings were lost and some apps refused to run at all...so not sure what happened there....even tried clearing cache / dalvik and fixing perms

You know, for someone whose been a member since 2010 you're kinda acting like an ass right now. I figure after 168 post you would have learned to not disrespect people in their own threads and to not be a ****. Not everyone buys their "Top of the line" "High End" "Smartphone" to just make phone calls and send text messages. Why even own a "Smartphone" if that's all you do?
While it seems that he is indeed phishing, he asks a good question. Gaming is a big concern to a lot of the people(especially the younger members)on these boards. It's a legitimate question and if you don't think he's asking it in good faith(i.e. asking just to gloat) prove him wrong. Post videos of the US SGS III running these games with no lag. Post replies with your take on how the device handles games from your own experience. Don't just come in and start talking **** on someone.
These games and applications are out for our "High End" mobile devices to be played lag free while pushing the devices GPU to the limit. If our 600$+ High End Smartphone can't keep up with what's currently available now, what's it going to be like 6 months to a year from now?
It's unacceptable that people always push that same old mantra of "Buy a gaming PC, or a PS Vita, Or a Nintendo DS, or an Xbox 360, or a PS3 if you want to play games". That's total and utter BS. I'm sorry if some of the other members on these boards expect more out of their 600$+ Smartphone (Or just any Expensive High End device in general) than you do.
Awesome, good talk. I feel like we made a lot of progress there, and I'm very proud of you!
P.S. And remember to always have fun!
P.P.S Sorry for calling you a ****, it was mean and I feel bad now.

The reason why I was curious about the T-Mobile version of the galaxy S3 was because I was thinking of selling my international version since I'm stuck on Edge.......... Would rather just get TMobile a version with Hspa+ if the performance is largely the same.

Anyway, I want to know, will these awesome games run smoothly without any smell of lag if I overclock cpu at 1.5 GHz ?
They will run better.
Personally, no games lag for me at all. I use Ram Manager from the market amd select less intense hard gaming option. You should try it

what setup are you using on your play ?
Im on fully stock with root
Just use ram manager when playing the 'big' games like MC3 etc
or if youve unlocked your bootloader and have a custom kernal, then you should overclock your cpu. I use An-tu-tu cpu manager when playing 3d games (such as gangstar rio, gta3, fifa 12 etc). I put it the min on ~800MHz-~1.4GHz. If i need more, then I just increase the max frequency, It really does help.
your on stock firmware and kernel and no games lag at all !!!!!

Yeah, they lag if i dont use Ram manager.
But if i do they are completely fine
I am using ram manager and v6 supercharger and my games still lag a bit but I am using 2.3.2 firmware what firmware are you using
2.3.4
Personally, v6 was horrible for me
ok thanks for quick reply I will try it without v6

Ram manager states that it will not work effectively with another ram script working at the same time
So maybe that was affecting it
same problem
I have the exact same problem. I experience lags when I play games on my Play, especially the ones with great graphic like Gameloft's (Dark Knight Rises, Gangstar Rio, even Asphalt 6). I felt very angry at times my Play lag when I was playing Asphalt 6. I always crashed my car when I took a sharp turn with Adrenaline on, and the game lagggg !!! They said the games will run on 59.4 fps.
Gangstar Rio even worse. At first it lag, and after a minute or two, the game crashed.
I read the post you guys posted earlier, and it seems modification is needed. The things u guys said about rooting, I dont think I dare to try for now. Maybe later, because I dont want to void my warranty.
Is there any connection between micro SD card and the game performance? I use Class 10 32 GB Kingston card. What card is the most suitable for Xperia Play?
What methods do u guys used other than rooting, and how effective it will be on my Play ?
Thanks.in advance. My first post in this forum.
Warranty ? Pls. i unlocked my XP first day i bought it.
U can easly get the warranty for screen or tape between screen and game pad.
I think u dont need any warranty for OS. And only thing u can break by urself is the cpu if u OC to much.
Even with unlocked BL and rooted phone u still have limited warranty, i called sony about that.
If my slider broke etc etc i still get warranty because this things are not software related xD
u just have to tell about it when u going to send ur phone on warranty.
If u r looking for stable gaming envoriment i will advice u to use
Lupus Kernel (364-1,4) and bfq sheduler, Dixperia2 Rom.
Other wise just remowe all bloatware from phone (google and facebook aps) and free as much ram as u can
Atm im playing GTA 3 at max detail + shadows + 100% resolution + 40% draw distance and im more than happy. It gets 50+ fps sometimes it is slowwering down but only when rain starts or night when lights are turrning on but its only for a sec it looks like some new data going to ram.
(Sry for bad english)

The class 10 micro SD card is the problem. I had one and it made everything lag horribly. You should better stick to class 2 or 4 for gaming.

Will try to root and unlock later (although i know nothing about it). First I need to study how to root and unlock. When I have extra money, will change my sd card. There are a lot of people experience lags when changing to class 10. Someone in the forum said, class 10 is not for gaming, because its random access speed is low. Besides silver shadow, a lot of people complaining about lags when changing to class 10.
Its a shame we need to experience all of this, because Xperia Play is a gaming phone, and should be lag free. They should make a phone with double analog stick (not analog touchpad) and 100 percent 60 fps!!! Its a good thing that the android games is very cheap. I pay for 2 gameloft games for just RM 6 (or USD 2 dollars).
Thanks guys for the help.

Lag free...
Look at PSX spec, or even PS2. And look at new phones hardware. This is not the phone problem, the problem is bad optimisation. If, for exapmple Gameloft (the worst team I ever know) focus on opptimization, you will have good quality games even on low-end phones. But not - buy new phone every six months, then you should'nt problem with lag
So this is not problem with our Xplays, we live in an ages, were profit matters, not users experience

class 10 is indeed not that good in random access speed, i think class 4/6 is the best all round use...
All of this talk about class 10 cards having bad random access speeds was valid a year ago, not any more. Times change and with it so does technology. A decent class 10 card nowadays doesn't have these problems. Whoever recommended a class 2 card, lmao.

Xperia Play Nexus (Concept On The successor to the Xperia Play) :D

Xda Hello friends here I bring a concept XPERIA PLAY NEXUS for next 2013
The idea of the design is the same but the characteristics of hardware and software is a concept my hope that you comment if you'd like and that someday (God hears) can reach the ears of Sony ..
Well here is the idea:
Xperia Play Nexus:

Screen: OLED of 5 inch (Full HD) (1920×1080) (440ppi or later recommended)
Processor: (Quad-Core 2,3 Ghz) (Snapdragon 800) (or later recommended)
GPU: Adreno 330 (or later recommended)
Ram: 2 Gb
Internal Memory: 64 Gb
Micro SD Card: Expandable up to 64 GB
Battery: 3600 mah
Platform: Android 4.3 (or last, 2013)
Rear Camera: 13 megapixel (Full HD 1080P) (dual LED flash) or (Xenon flash & Exmor RS)
Front camera: 2 megapixel (720p HD)
Connectivity: 3G - 4G & Wi-Fi
Bluetooth: 4.0
HDMI-Output
Playstation Certification: (of course)
Support For Games In The Cloud: (Gaikai & Onlive)
The excuse for not launching a successor to the Xperia Play now , because if they would not lose sales of the PS Vita (no sense)
Since they are two totally different things A Smartphone with android. And a game console (with games made specifically for her)
If you think about it (Our Xperia Play has a much higher range of games optimized)
1) Games in the cloud with the system (OnLive) games up to PS3
2) optimized Especialmene Games (Gameloft - Electronic Arts - Rockstars & many more)
3) Emulators (Sega Genesis, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Gameboy, PS1, MAME, N64 - and future emulators NDS, PSP, Sega Saturn & Dreamcast)
Apart from all that.
The idea would be to take out a Xplay Nexus Play, compatible with all games optimized for current and Xplay.
And to bring the factory, a mapping system such as the ARCHOS GAMEPAD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgsJ7gUK1cA
In my opinion, our Xplay game in question, is better than the PS Vita (Only that is outdated and poor, Software & Hardware)
All we're asking is that Sony lanze a Successor (With Best Hardware - Better battery & Software Upgradeable) and to give long life and success to the next successor to the Xperia Play. :victory:
And the idea that it would also be expected to come out the new version of Android (Key Lime Pie - Supposedly) in order to integrate it. :good:
And finally
PRICE: (which they would like to discuss it you whatsoever. Speaking at reasonable prices obviously)
Well if I'm missing something I ask that comment to know that good ideas come to mind for this great concept: (Dreaming does not cost anything)
Greetings friends.

friends we .. not be so negative .. to come sony taking midrange models does not mean that by 2013 can not get to it ..
If they see the work they are doing Samsung & LG with high-end models like (Samsung Galaxy Note 2 & LG Optimus G) already for 2013 will surely be left behind. supposedly because Sony said that by 2013 would remove 4-core smartphones. I could not get to make such a model?

so is. on whether the idea is good because sometimes you only want to use the arrows. (in my case to surf the internet or between menu and that)
That itself would have a thickness manterner not say very thin. But from my point of view they could do with that design and maintain the current width of the Xperia Play
The design of this concept would be not likely. This looks like the slider would be taken from the PS Vita, and if it had double sliders on the sides, it would make it bulky and difficult to hold. But it's just a concept, and we don't know even if there will be an Xperia Play 2.
I honestly think that the current design, based of the PSP Go, would still be the best. In place of the Slide Pads, they should add actual analog sticks. All in my opinion, so, don't judge

From my point of view if you would be comfortable to hold as it might sustain from the space to open
(not if you see what I mean)
Look at the attached image. so it would look from behind
(That's a picture of what would be a psp with the same design)
imagine how it would look from behind the Xplay 2 Following the concept of the previous images.
That is if we are serious comparisons equally comfortable that the PSVita but with less thickness. I would say that could be done to maintain the same thickness of the Xperia Play today .. and with the new design would be easier to get to the screen with your fingers for games that are not fully optimized.
still... MEH..
Hear XDA friends.
Remember that this is only a concept.
I opened this thread for people who likes the idea of an Xperia Play 2 express their views in a good way. :good:
I say this with good intentions without offending or bothering anyone.
Thanks for your answers anyway.

if. the design is very similar. because it is with reference to several news announced that Sony would work only in this smartphone in 2013.
http://www.xatakamovil.com/sony/sony-se-queda-en-el-doble-nucleo-hasta-2013
But the resemblance is only in the design competition could not do with the PSVita because each one has its unique characteristics.
Good concept! Like it!!!!

cool design
I saw this pic in cnet asia. Its the concept for psvita before its launched when nobody know what it looks like. It would be cool, if our xperia play is as cool as this, or maybe the next xperia play 2, if sony possibly make it.
This console has 2 analog stics that look very comfortable to use !!! It is stylish too!!! Just put android phone buttons, and it set to go !!! Maybe the position of analog sticks and 4 main buttons/d-pad can be rearranged. Pause, select and playstation button also need to put at other side.
Anyhow, this concept cool !!! Credits to its owner, which I dont know who (but I copy the url from cnet asia).

The xperia play is a great phone and ghe best for gaming but its pretty outdated specs wise.if you don't care about specs and just want a good gaming phone than go for it. But if you want want a newer phone with good specs then get something newer like an s3 or something more affordable. But if you like gaming and don't care about old hardware and outdated software ( its stuck on gb unless you wanna flash a custom rom) then go for it

Who cares about specs this phone runs better and is more stable then most phones on the, market lol plus you can overclovk the crap out of it

its the only phone in the market that has a real life playstation touchpad yes it may have lower specs than the one thats out there, but the feel of having android phone + a playstation certified gaming gadget can never be traded by anything else out there. this phone will be my best and will forever be cherished by a gamer like me
i was worried about the ram its only 512 ive hardly had a phone with 512mb my current other phone is atrix dual core and 1 gb ram i also have an iphone which i dont want
This phone might have low ram and bad specs, but games still go much faster on the xperia play then on other devices with better specs.
And if games start to lag, unlock your bootloader, then flash a kernel and overclock.
Still lag, debloat your phone.
Still lag, flash tweaks eg AdrenoBooster
I am a proud play owner.but get galaxy 3 or HTC one and you will be happy.the play I will give it half a year and it will be dead.I am play owner from the start my first android phone.I hate Sony for what they do to this phone and not releasing xplay 2!!

I believe the Xperia z would be an awesome phone choice for someone with gigantism or something 5 inch display like come on thats ridiculous. You cant even hold it in your hand comfortably. Maybe soon they will come out with phone backpacks cause unless you have ganster pants that monster is not going to fit in your pocket.

Playing games on a touch screen device is good but not the same as playing on xperia play
Its not worth getting xperia play. A few weeks ago I thought it is worth to have an xperia play for gaming, phone, bluetooth, etc all in one little device... With all those I listed above is what I use on my xperia play it became a burden because it drains the CPU resources to do certain for instance gaming, and because it lacks ram, internal memory. I felt it was wasnt worth it a long run. Get a ps3 controller with a stand and be done with it.
well, its almost 2016 and I don't give a crap about specs on my phone, maybe on my pc for heavy gaming like shadows of mordor. But if you really love games F... all others. sure you can be gay and get a moga controller or other, but then you need a stand for your phone(unless it has one) then you have to carry a controller around like a putz! why do I really need to walkaround like a gay batman with a fanny pack in lieu of my utility belt? and ram? who cares root it unlock the boot loader and use sd card ext give your self whatever size you want good god! oh the X-play successfully use the 64 gb sd( I know cause its in mine 4 years now) is that the only defense new phones have that and speed? So what you had a 90 ghzx 32 gb phone SO??? IT DOES NOT HAVE A BUILT IN DUAL TOUCHPAD CONTROLLER. like one guy said ramp up the speed a little to alleviate sluggish response. I run mine a 1300 MHz (don't want to burn up the processor) and its almost 2016 , but with a controller, I get to play DS games (almost all of them ) all snes, genesis, Gba , and now PSP games and N64 games (quite a few) run (most of them) and all of the PSX library too then all the other games out there for android and the small handful of x-play exclusives. dead space dungeon hunter 2 3 and 4 shadowgun GTA 3 AVP minecraft PE all angry birds rainbow 6 HD ,backstab, Aidens crons man the list goes on.
So if you are agamer, don't get anything else period because it has a controller and the massive list of highly functioning emulators to go with it. ( seven consoles in one plus android games). if you just want a really powerful phone get a Z or i phone 6 or some Shiite because you know that you need that raw power for your texting and twatting. LMFAO but you already know what youre going to do , so just do it and stop asking questions.

It's funny how android fanboys basically jack off to specs but a single core phone from 2011 still keeps up in gaming lol. You can even install up to jelly bean and have everything working kitkat and lollipop work but the touchpads are still being worked on. If the Xperia play could be modded to have LTE everyone would probably still have it. Yes other phones have bigger screens and are faster but if it is gaming that is your passion the play is THE ONLY WAY TO GO. Like this guy says you can use the sd as ram lol. It will be slower doing some things but gaming with that controller just can't be matched. If Sony made a derivative of the Z that had a gamepad I'd buy it the second it came out lol. Because my plays flex cable went out when I was away I had to get a new phone aka the Ion and now I have a z3 which is nice because it has alot of awesome features but I still have and still use a Xperia play! Gaming on a touchscreen really sucks.
Someone even modded the remote play apk so you theoretically could play your Ps4 on your Xperia play if you have the Sony files on your rom!

Don't get the Xperia Play now.. move on and get a z5 and a PS controller attachd to it or something.. this phone will be dead very soon.. Gaming wise. as a phone its still good. newer games demand more from the phone which Play cant give.

Well for me the Xperia Play has been the best phone ever made, the build quality is amazing the design is perfect, the speakers are great, battery life outstanding, the Camera is still great for today standards and the physical controls just make the difference, no other phone in the market offers all that.
My advice is, get an Xperia play if you mainly care about gaming and only use your phone for basic stuff like moderate messaging, phone calls, whatsapp, listening to music, taking some photos.
If you use a lot of Facebook, email, surfing the web, google app and other heavy apps then I advise to stay away from the Play, the single core and the 512mb of ram are just not enough for multitasking, no matter how much you tweak it, the experience will be annoying. Mainly due to poorly optimized apps from developers, for instance the Facebook app will make the XPlay unusable.
let me add to that many of the apps that I use.. have a min. requirement of 4.0.4+ or ICS+ and if we use Xperia play for real gaming.. we have to stay at GB or 2.3.7 .. so u would have to choose between Apps or Gaming.. so yes
Gaming wise this phone is the best.. that too cant play newer games I believe.. as time will pass newer games will have a min requirement of 4+ too I believe.. so this phone is loosing the battle everyday in that sense.

Why do you have to stay below jelly bean I believe everything works. I'm not sure about kit kat tho. But the majority the VAST majority support down to ICS which our plays do have. You can mod ICS or pick up a rom to make gaming epic. Just trust me on this one.
https://youtu.be/T7uJ_ylow3k my awesome youtube channel so many vids! 237 to be exact
not sure if anyone still visits this thread, I just got an Xperia Play (R800at) today. been playing around a bit with it (I collect unique cell phones still looking for a nice inexpensive LG Thrill (in good shape lol) and I'm done lol)
Anyway, was looking on here to see what mods and such were available. hate the low memory. wanna kill off the FB app as I prolly wont use it there. just wanna load some emu's and a streaming music app (Soma FM) . also, probably a silly question, did the market end for this phone? (the game market I mean. both the playstation app and the xperia play app (the one that starts when you open the controls) wont connect to download)
Also whats the best root method?
