Wireless Tether/Mobile Hotspot - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Has anyone gotten a free wireless tether app working?
Wireless Tether for Root users isn't working

I googled the same thing this morning and the way it sounds, no, they haven't. But a lot of people are working on it.

I assume you must be talking about the gsm version? My vzw nexus worked out of the box. Not rooted yet though.

wireless tether for root users is being fixed to work with the BCM 4330 chip. Use PDAnet with usb tethering in the meantime.

Using it out of the box the built in app on Verizon you have to pay $20 / month for the service.

GSM version works the same as what Rhyno said above....not sure if OP knew where to look
Edit: see post below..nailed it.

If you're on the GSM version, just use the built-in version. You can tether USB, Bluetooth, or WiFi Hotspot via settings menu.
If you're on the VZW version, you have to either run a custom ROM that doesn't have Verizon's tracking software on it, or wait for people to figure out what apps need to be tweaked/removed in the stock ROM to make sure you can use 3rd party apps effectively without being "caught" by VZW.

Not up to speed on the gn, I guess. Coming from an aosp rommed thunderbolt.
Could vzw actually charge me 20/ month for something built in without notifying me first? Or just put me on some sort of watch list?

Actually the way it works is a VZW popup comes up when you try to feather and requires that you sign up for a plan before it will connect.

Is everyone else on verizon having this problem? Trying to find the differentiating factors here...
I'm grandfathered in for unlimited data, and have used stock/app tethering on all my Android phones.
The vzw rep at the store couldn't activate my gn in store (using wife's upgrade from separate acct) so I had to activate on the web.
I was never given the message described above, it was just the same old stock tethering menus...
Different software revs possibly? Not sure... I updated to 4.02 yesterday, but I can't remember if I set up wifi tether before that or not.

I imagine this is the same as everyone's, but just in case.

Just check your account. If you're already paying then it won't pop up... I highly doubt they're letting you slide through. There's some kinda explanation as to why you're not getting the notification of the service.

I'll check my acct and confirm again. I've never used the Verizon hotspot (or at least since my 2 free months after buying the tbolt, anyways). Weird.
---------- Post added at 04:39 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:26 AM ----------
Checked account, same as it has been since forever. Anyways, if I can help at all, or if anyone needs file info, a backup, etc.. just PM me. Otherwise I'll reply back to this thread if I ever do get any notification or charge on my account.

That is weird. I picked up my Galaxy Nexus yesterday from VZW. According to the salesman at the corporate store I picked it up from, VZW has not yet enabled the built in tethering on their side. He claims they are currently reimbursing customers that have tethering plans and have upgraded to the GN. It sounds as though, if you're paying for tethering it won't work.
He also said there is much confusion within the company's sales staff regarding the GN. At the time I picked up mine, he said they hadn't really received training on the device yet; or for that matter much info at all. So, this could all be wrong.

Just to clarify I was talking about the LTE Verizon Galaxy Nexus with a free tethering plan as an alternative to the one from Verizon for anyone who was wondering

Doesn't sound like a definitive answer. I would talk to someone else. There is always a reason why.
Did u buy a GSM or CDMA phone. U need to make sure it was the sprint version not the Verizon or the GSM version.

A sprint store should be able to figure it out. If it's a brand new phone I don't see why not.
What plan do you have?
Can't activate on Verizon either
I'm having the same problem-- but with Verizon. Bought it from ebay, in great communication with the seller who is trying to help.
Phone isn't stolen/lost; no outstanding balances on the phone or my plan.
Factory data reset didn't help one bit. Can't activate fully-- just get internet (no calls/texts).

Did you get a new 4g sim card with your new phone? Or a sim replacement? You need to activate the sim card, but as long as its already activated, any device should work.

If they can't activate it has to be GSM or verizon

Are you sure it's a Sprint Galaxy Nexus? Take some pictures of the phone. What does the backcover contain?
Yep, this is the third new SIM (LTE) card. Been to both the store and on the phone with Verizon tech reps.
Tech reps say activation is "stuck at the switch" (this is day 3... btw)
should I unroot it? I've already done 2 factory data resets.... Or should I just wait it out?

A lot of custom roms do not have all the required proprietaries needed for such things like sim activation. Or they include them, but do not sign them correctly.

I don't suggest asking them to put it in a display device to activate....i don't think they normally do that and will probably look at you like you have spiders crawling out your nose lol
Just put it on a stock ROM
When i got my nexus it came with liquid on it unlockedrooted
i just flashed the 4.04 stock ROM build that bird man compiled found over at rootzwiki and it got activated
At this point you have the option of putting the official stock 4.04 vzw build on it tho which i would recommend, preferably one without any tweaks, rooted should be fine tho
To the OP, try putting your self on a stock ROM for sprint and you should be gravy
Good luck!

Regular Sim or Micro Sim

Im guessing our phone uses the regular sized sim? The reason I ask is because Im thinking of switching to straight talk as tmobil just cut off my tethering.

Yesterday I couldnt access any websites. There was no anti-tethering tmobile software included on my device, and each site I tried to access would redirect to a tmobile webpage.
I've been tethering since i got the device with no issues and Im also on a prepaid contract.

Same here....are you using Google chrome by any chance? I know chrome has some fancy stuff that keeps it from accessing other sites. I simply used safari and it worked fine after that. Sucks that I can no longer use chrome but its whatevs really. I actually called T-Mobile about it since I have the 5GB data plan and tethering should be free with that, well it now turns out that tethering is 5 bucks extra on top of the 30.

Remember that services like straight talk say that you get unlimited data but shut it off if you go above 2gb a month sometimes less. If you want some sources I can dig up some from howardforums links to show you.

Well if I cant tether on tmobile, then ill never use up all 5 gigs i pay for. It would make sense for me to have a plan that costs less and gives me less data.
If im stuck with 2gigs thats fine, since the bill will go from 70 to 45 per month... and ill pry only use about 2 gigs if tethering isnt an option.

Sprint getting ready to remove unlimited?

I upgraded my line to the SGS3 yesterday and now I'm noticing that my usage says certain usage out of 4 GB. Not sure what's going on but it appears like Sprint may be removing the unlimited data feature soon? They've been changing a lot of things on their website lately.

Very interesting. Can you hop on their support chat and ask why you're showing a 4GB data limit? Mine is still showing unlimited, but I have not made any account changes or upgrades since 9/2011.
Unlimited Data is practically the only thing keeping me on Sprint. Hell, even T-Mobile is better...
Just noticed that's my screenshot lol.
I'll chat with them and see but I don't really see myself getting an accurate answer from Sprint reps.

Maybe it's just a 4GB limit per day.
It might have been a bug with the 1 second Leap Second that happened at the end of last month. Just a guess since the billing cycle for the 4GB above is from 4/1 to 4/1.
For more information on it, click here:

It's a website bug, I've had customers come in before showing the same thing.

a packet is a packet, doesn't matter if it comes from a phone, a computer, or a leap frog toy that your 2 year old son wiped his boogers on. anyone with a clue would know you can torrent on your phone too. did you also forget that some people have done away with cable and simply stream netflix and hulu via HDMI from their phones to their TVs? what about some of the new games that require hundreds of MB of additional data to be downloaded to your sdcard before you can even play it? should they get charged tethering fees for not tethering even though they're using the same amount of data as someone who is?

If you're going to stream Netflix or Hulu to your TV from your PHONE connection, then yes, I think you should get charged for that.

[Q] Switching from ATT Galaxy S III to T-Mobile Galaxy S III (DC Metro)

ATT is screwing me by refusing to carry forward my unlimited data plan to LTE and has repeatedly tried to force me onto a capped plan.
I saw a newspaper ad today (archaic - I know!) saying T-Mo has an unlimited everything plan for this phone for $90 and it's tempting. I'm hoping to sell or swap my existing GS3.
Is there anything I should be aware of?
Also, what is T-mo's take on this plan if I try to tether?
Thanks.
I'm pretty sure you can just swap sims? Tethering has been beaten to death on these forums. I'd take a few minutes to search and ask your questions in those threads if they haven't been covered yet.

I think I already made it clear I anticipated getting a new S3. I know that they aren't fully compatible for 3/4G/LTE.
Re: Tethering. I though this was a new plan - it appears to be as much in the advert.
They block tethering on unlimited data plans but rooted tethering might work. I haven't tried it yet.

They are trying to kill teather with updates. I tried T-Mobile with still having my main line on att. Speeds were either really fast or dead slow. I'd rather just stick with att because it's decently fast wherever I go.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I just recently re-upped with T-Mobile. They have two types of plans out right now. They have what they call the classic plan and I can't remember what their new plans are called.
Anyway, with the classic plan you get the phone subsidized, but the plan itself is pretty expensive. On the other hand if you get their newer plan, you pay full price for the phone, but the plan itself is dirt cheap (cheapest I can find among the major carriers). While $600 for a phone might seem like a lot, they only require a $200 down payment and since you're starting a new contract you'll probably get $100 or so knocked off. The rest of the price of the phone is spread throughout the first 20 months of your contract.
Applying a little basic finance and assuming you have a decent stock portfolio, I estimated my cost of my Galaxy S3 at around $350 and my monthly fees went down from $230-250 to its current $140-150.
Don't know much about T-Mobile signal in your area, but if you can manage a consistent 3G I'd say it's worth the cost savings.
I would tell you that you will be very happy with t-mobile vs att, I did the switch my self and I couldn't be any happier, my data is very fast and yes it is faster than att and I get 4g 95% of the time in my area, my brother still have att with the s3 and my phone is way faster than his, on a speed test mine gets between 17000-22000 kbs consent vs his the highest he gets is about 5000-8000

Sprint isn't really unlimited

I just got a call from sprint customer service warning me that they were going to cut me off if I didn't stop tethering.... I did it once to allow my dad to use his laptop to take care of his bills while he is recovering from a triple bypass.. once in 6 months and I get called and warned.. talk about tight! Gimme a break sprint! What a joke! I was deciding between sprint and AT&T when I got my s3 so I may just go that route anyway if Sprint are going to be that ridiculous about it... just a fair warning. ... I was using foxfi with a Bluetooth tether to do it. Whatever you do... don't tether like that or Sprint will call and threaten you...

Sprint offers unlimited data, texts, and calls. Tethering requires a different plan and its limited. If you're tethering for free, you don't have anything to complain about.

What this guy said. The official tether option is considered a add-on, not included in your unlimited data.
Unlimited data only covers the data going to phone not to another device.
I guess you didn't read your tos agreement.

I have been with sprint for 2 years with my evo4g rooted and using WiFi tether, I connect everything to it and download music, videos, streaming movies and games and never got any call.

Might be something with that certain program or bluetooth. I've tethered to the Nexus 7 for 300+MB games, and even whole movie downloads prior with the wifi tether options listed here on xda and never had any issues. What the other say is correct though, the plan does only cover unlimited data to the phone.
Fun times either way, thanks for the heads up !
Sprint is Unlimited if you follow the TOS you agreed to.

While Sprint CEO Dan Hesse appeared at Citi’s Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications conference Thursday to talk up Sprint’s new LTE plans, he let slip a change in Sprint’s data policies that could have a big impact on iPhone and other smartphone customers lured in by Sprint’s unlimited plans. Hesse acknowledged that Sprint has been throttling back speeds to the 1 percent heaviest consumers of smartphone data. While technically, the service is still unlimited, the admission leaves egg on Hesse’s face since he’s criticized the competition for adopting similar data restrictions in the past.
Felt I had to out this out their as a reply to the last thread about this >=]
