[Q]Why is there no OSS solution for unlocking branded Plays? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm just pointing out what feels like the elephant in the room here. Excuse me if I'm out of line.
I bought a Play coming from the HTC Eris (CDMA Hero), and the Eris is an amazing phone. I still lurk on the forums (and really sad it got shuffled, but out with the old, in with the new.) The community there really extended its life far beyond what Verizon gave it (it officially died with 2.1, but right now mine is running CM7 2.3.7.) Overall it was a great community to get introduced to Android with, and I'm very appreciative of all the devs that worked hard to make the Eris experience much, much more amazing.
So, I purchased my R800x in October, and I was excited. New phone, new community; I was really pumped to see what everyone here was cooking up. But we seem to be stuck in a holding pattern of some sort. I can definitely see there are a lot of talented people very eager to dev and cook up roms, but I'm finding the same loop everywhere: "Can we unlock bootloaders yet" maybe "CM7?" no.
Now, I don't expect anyone to do anything simply because this is here. That's not the point of the question. The question is (twofold): Why is there no open source boot loader unlock for all Xperia Plays? I went through the dev forum archives and can't really find anything concrete as to why phones like the R800x don't have one. And if there is an issue (or even if there is not), how can I help? I want to get involved. I don't have much experience with unlocking bootloaders, but I have gone through the Android source, and feel I'm moderately familiar with how Android works.

Same here, i was introduced brilliantly into the community when i bought my galaxy s, the development page was packed everyday of different stuff, with the play no ones trying.... but some people are. You can unlock your boot loader but it does cost a small amount of money, check the development section. Im 14 & don't really have a paypal account so i can't unlock mine either lol. We can't really help, were just 2 people out of 7,000,000,000 :L

People, the fact that the Play has few devs behind it is simple: sales. The Play has been a big flop. That is the mere reason why we're left with little support in comparison to other phones. Forget locked or unlocked bootloaders, open or closed operative systems or whatever, it's not relevant: if a phone/tablet/whatever sells well, it will be tinkered with. Commercial developers want money, amateurs are glory hounds eager to be like Darky or Geohot, and some just want to help selflessly, but the motivations of the three have sales as the common point.

Well its the best thing that ever happened in mobile gaming, compared to n gage anyway lol

I came from an Eris as well, handed it down to my niece, she is still using with 2.3.7.
I got my play back in June. In early August a dev named ashergray did figure out how to unlock the bootloader. Mine was one of the first 5-10 that they did. Lucky for me, it was free.
I am not sure if the devs involved were contacted by verizon, i think i read that somewhere, but they stopped doing it.
Right now theres a guy doing it for like 20 bucks. Kinda sucks but whatever.
Your not missing all that much yet, right now I am running Doom Kernel with the UK generic firmware. Its better then stock verizon, but not by leaps and bounds.
I think the noted difference between this community and the Eris community, is that the Eris was one of the first driod phones and it was dirt F'n cheap! Now that verizon has this going for 50 bucks, maybe we will get an increase in our community and dev population.
Oh and in general, gamers are arrogant assholes. You will see alot of that in here too.

Who would I contact about unlocking the bootloader on my R800x? I am willing to Donate to get it done. Thanks.

Check in the Development section

The way we got our early unlock was through a workaround in Sony Ericsson's standard unlock web interface. R800i gets a free bootloader unlock from Sony themselves. All you need is your IMEI number, go to their website, and type it in. It give you an unlock code and instructions on how to use it.
R800x doesn't have an IMEI, it has an MEID. The website wouldn't accept numbers with a letter in it (imei are all numbers). However, it was only the form on the website that filtered the input. Ashergrey found a way to feed the MEID directly to the unlocking program, and he was able to produce unlock codes. Sony eventually caught wind of this exploit and patched their website so now there's no free workaround to unlock.
The guy who you have to pay to unlock is allejandrissimo. You only have to pay to unlock because he has to buy credits for a sony ericsson program to do the unlocks. He is charging for the amount of the credits. This is currently the only way to do a bootloader unlock.
And honestly, this phone isn't selling well because it really isn't that great a phone. The controller is brilliant, don't get me wrong, but its a single core device with 384 meg of ram and maybe 512 of internal storage that came out at the same time as the droid x2 and similar devices, with 16 GIG of internal storage and 512 to 1GIG of ram, plus dual core to boot. And it came out at the same pricepoint. Seriously, my wife has a droid2 global, and its has 2 GIG of internal storage.
If xperia play had come out 6 months earlier, it would have been a big hit. Sony botched this one because, like most of their corporate marketing, they believe that the gamer portion of their population is stupid and will buy anything with the "playstation" name attached to it. Need I remind you of the initial PS3 marketing strategies? I almost didn't buy this phone because of the bad rep Sony had with me, related to how they treated their PS3 customers. Ultimately, my inner gamer won out.
Here's to hoping for an xperia play 2 that's got a decent screen, decent internal memory, and decent ram.

You have a point with the ram and Internal Storage, but Single core devices aren't really needed yet, Look at Dead space, GTA and other high graphic games, Off course it would be nice to have a Dual core but imo the xperia play could have been better if they put more into it (HDMI, Better screen...)

I agree that in reality it isn't a big deal. But with consumer products, perception drives reality. The phone was seen as being "lesser", and thus doesn't sell well.

Dual core or not , it's still among the best , but remember no games or even softwares are near being made for dual core devices anyways . All made the same some optimum (HD) for certain ones i.e Xperia play among others. And so far as the HDMI it's believed it's built-in , just not user friendly with current update .

But all in all, I love this post because even I said the same, the xperia is the only android todate that's a pain in the rear about everything , simple things are gigntic with it. I remember the G1 could even install recovery from it's own terminal emulator , seriously , even the G1 could do such a basic function , but you turn left or right , it's the same excuses everywhere it seems no one really knowing anything

Lolwat? You think the xplay is complicated? It's really not that bad, in comparison to some others.

I've compiled a whole thread about the whole resources at your disposal about rooting, unlocking, flashing stuff, and so on; I've asked mods to make it a sticky thread without an answer of any kind; and now recently I've been reading more and more comments about how "nobody knows anything concrete" or "there are no threads about this stuff".
I give up. It's just pointless.
*edit* it seems that my query to the mood never went to them. I'm quite puzzled about the why.

Agree with ya logseman big time
I also agree this phone is a good gamer phone.
but I also agree that the community or lack of one is really disappointing since I came from droid X community. there was so much going on there and compared to this its like comparing night to day.

Still , it's pathetic , because other phones even with a huge marketing profits weren't as hard nor complicated as the Zeus, I.E G1 , though it was a commercial success it still wasn't a pain to do anything , fact of the matter is , with or without development , the Zeus is still "roadblocked" compared to other androids which a newbie could easily.tweak.

I haven't linked ease of modding and sales in any way. I'm just saying that if a phone is successful in the market, it will be modded. The big name Galaxies are ROM whores that you can Sim unlock for free and they have lots of roms, tweaks and stuff... But then the iThings are very hard to mod yet they have huge quantities of stuff for jailbroken units.
Maemo phones were really easy to mod, webOS devices were seemingly hard to break, and both have little content in comparison to the former two.
It boils down to sales: we as users gamble on the popularity of a device: Galaxies and iThings have millions and millions of users, while maemo and webOS have only thousands.

I bought an Iphone... Never a section 4 it?

I changed my HTC device with an Apple Iphone..the major thing I miss is the XDA developers forum ... In the future can we (about 5000k people..) at least hope to have one ? cheers....
probably not, this forum is for ms pda's (mainly htc), notice not much talk of palm devices either you'll probably have to find other forums that discuss the iphone cuz ive noticed not many people on this forum even like the word iphone unless its getting bashed. so good luck but i wouldnt look forward to it
I heard Apple is releasing the dev kit for the iPhone...so people can start writing their own apps for the phone. Also heard something about being able to run webapps offline.
I'm sure the iPhone forums will take off as soon as people start developing for the iPhone.
yeah it's true. tomorrow for the devkit !
If it's not made by HTC you won't get it through the door. There'll be sites-a-pleanty once a devkit is out but probably none as good as this. I wonder if Apple will set about having them shut down? You can't have people using their own property for anything they want you know.....
another issue is that apple use objectC rather then c++ or c# or even old c or poorly VB
and objectC is a world apart from the other languages

This is really an HTC only forum.
Sorry to plug, but forums.macrumors.com has a pretty good iPhone/iPhone Hacking Community.
Hey!
A little Definion about "XDA":
"The [O2] Xda brand is a range of O2-branded Windows Mobile PDA phones, produced by multiple manufacturers (mainly HTC, Quanta and Erima). The first model was released in June 2002. The "X" represents convergence of voice and information/data within one product; the "da" stands for "digital assistant", as in PDA."
I think this forum should be specified in Windows Mobile. The iPhone isn't a productively device on the market! And the people who buy this expensive "Fun-Gadget" doesn't use it to develop something on it.
"The iPhone is a dust-bin: It can look beautiful, but the contents are rubbish."

What part of the contents are rubbish? Just wondering becuase I just got a good deal on a 16gb and I cant find flaws. BTW, I purchased it to resell it becuase it was way too cheap. Not to mention, it would give me a chance to see what all the hype was about. Let me tell you...I know why so many devs on xda are trying to emulate some of the features and charecteristics of the iphone. Bcuase it is the best phone/handheld device that I have ever played with.
In my idea, not to go into all of the greatness of the iphone in my opinion, but if I can buy a 16gb for $400 (unlocked to use with any gsm carrier), $5.99 T-ZOne hack and many other cool things like SNES, NES with each having about 100 or so games etc. and the abilty to add 12 movies and over 700 songs and still have over 7gb to play with and still running like lightning.......my mind is made up.
DOnt let me forget about the accelorometer and the games that are available that utilize the accelorometer.
Please tell me where the rubbish is.
Oh and BTW, I am locked in my Verizon contract for another couple of months on my 6700 so I cant %100 test the calling capabilities yet as I have not hooked this one up.

Lets tell HTC how we feel about them locking our phones down

I'm kind of angry that HTC chooses to do this I mean after all we all purchased this phone therefor we should have the right to do as we please with it, correct?Sure its not really getting anything done on the rooting scene but the least we can do is tell them we're dissatisfied with their closed approach to Android.

I assume its due to new apps such as: netflix, hulu, move rentals and other apps that require a lockdown. I don't think HTC would like to see their hard work (HTC Sense) on other devices lowering the need for upgrades: example, the two Incredibles if you install sense 2.0 or skyraider 4.0 the need for Incredible 2 lowers quite a bit. I plan on jumping on Incredible 2 just because of its design. It is exactly what I wanted in the first Incredible. I'm all up more for unlocked HTC phones
I sent them an email and got the following response...
Thank you for your feedback regarding the Incredible 2. Unfortunately I do not have information about whether the bootloader is locked or how it can be customized to allow you to install a custom ROM. Because we focus on supporting the software included on the device and assisting users with free technical support we are only able to support the aspects of the device as they are developed by ourselves and your carrier, in this case Verizon.
That said, however, we do value your feedback. You will see an invitation to provide our company with recorded, documented feedback in the signature of my email to you. The ratings at the top are your opportunity to rate my response to you and then there is a comment section that allows you to make your opinions known to HTC itself, rather than to simply the representative who corresponds with you. I would encourage you to submit your opinion there as well, even if you just copy and paste most of your initial email to us.
We track this feedback and it does make a difference in our product decisions. If it turns out the bootloader is locked down with a secure key or other method, your feedback using the survey system may convince the powers that be to change this in a future update.
In regard to your inquiry regarding an API for the Sense interface, any application or widget targeted for Android should work in HTC Sense, so you should be able to use the Android APIs for your development purposes and this will also allow your application to work on phones that do not run HTC Sense, such as competitor phones or even some of our devices like the G2. That said, there are additional resources where you can get information about developing on HTC and Android devices:
http://www.htcmobilitynow.com/ This is a site that allows you to request to partner with us for application development or suggest a business opportunity, if you would like.
http://developer.htc.com/ This URL contains kernel and GPL-covered source code for our devices. Source is generally published within 90 days of a product release but it normally does not take that long.

Pretty much just seems like a regular copy paste brush off response.
HTC has some very good reasons for locking devices down, and I don't blame them at all. Their setup is very nice for the average consumer.
I support OEMs locking their hardware in general, however I also support (and am active in) unlocking them. What they really need to do is find a workable solution, like enabling oem unlock.

I have seen a lot of boilerplate brush-offs in my life, and while that HTC rep wasn't able to help get anything done in some concrete form, the letter was not based on a template. Sure they were 2 or 3 paragraphs that sounded stock, but I am guessing (and was very surprised considering what I have seen from HTC on other occasions) that the letter took a longer than average amount of time to write... I do not think it would not be considered a brush off.
And it makes sense... If there is any industry right now which is being carefully watched because of the world's acknowledged impact of it on an individual's daily life, both professional and personal, it is mobile communication and the development thereof. There is an extraordinary amount of money to be made and lost here. HTC is a newcomer through good fortune and I doubt anyone expected them to be sitting next to motorola, samsung, LG, etc. 3 years ago. In this age of social media where 4000 people complaining on a Facebook page can change a corporate policy, HTC is not ignoring any group. And not one with the power we have.
Look at T-Mobile, while I still think their customer device is mediocre, as third place carrier, I have noticed a distinct catering to the "enthusiast" segment of android. Now this doesn't mean they are going to have every phone released sporting a wide open OS like the G1, but their phones are relatively easy to root (wake up Motorola!), and the caliber of their phones (design, cutting edge technology like dual core) is far and away better than the other carriers out there.
I am starting to ramble, but my point is this is a crucial time in an area that we happen to be a big part of. If you don't think the manufacturers or the carriers are keeping a close eye on this board's membership, or the number of people served by CM7, your wrong.. We have the power to turn the carriers and the manufacturers future business plans on their ear. (With early attempts at a "kitchen"... man, that had to make them tremble a bit.) And this enthusiast market is only going to snowball, even if not for true enthusiasts, then for all the people that just want someone to root and re-theme their phone. Trust me, they care.
EDIT: Bottom line, the OP is making a smart suggestion.

I certainly expected them to be sitting were they are 3 years ago. 5 years ago, no. Hadn't heard of them yet.
Also that was not a stock brush off. Everytime I've contacted HTC I've been happily surprised with their answers. She told you what we need to do to change it so let's do it!

I agree with jcase that manufacturers and service providers have legitimate reasons for the locking of their respective devices.
One being the protection of their oem software as stated. Another is fraudulent device returns for devices bricked or otherwise rendered inoperable by something done at root level. Lastly the hot topic of rooted tethering and wifi hot spot which are paid services.
So that being said set aside your anger and look at it from their point of view.
I am a rooted user who takes full advantage of my devices potential. I hope that there is a solution in the not too distant future that will both protect the manufacturers and providers interests yet give us the option to modify our devices as we see fit.

Why not just do what computer manufacturers have done for years? Have a recovery procedure. Or what the nook color did and always boot first off the sd card. Half of the reason that bricking occurs is as a result of circumventing the security. If there was a way to always boot off an sd card people could always restore it. No more bricked phones.. and everyone is happy.

Are you guys serious? HTC has been around for ages (1997) theyre one of the pioneers in pda/smartphone and touchscreen technology. First windows pda, first windows based phone, first 3g cdma smartphone, first android smartphone and first 4g smartphone. They've been innovative when LG and Moto thought the razr and shine were bleeding edge lol. I had NO doubt they would have a seat upon high. ;-)

HTC already does this, but many of us are dicking with the bootloader, which handles this. Once you mess with the bootloader, the possibility of bricking is very real.
Locking down the bootloader was Verizon's idea. Not HTC's. They would rather sell them unlocked. Only the carrier wants them locked. Just think about it and you will see why the manufacturers are forced to do so. There is no point contacting HTC. Please send such emails to Verizon. Please do bug HTC to sell unlocked boot loader devices on the net.

HTC first did this on a non carrier branded phone first. The whole "it is Verizon" argument is silly, it is a reaction to the industry and carriers as a whole.

Actually the difficulties with rooting has not been carrier specific. In fact, the troubles started with the myTouch Slide on T-Mobile then the G2 on T-Mobile and now the Incredible 2 on Verizon, the Evo Shift on Sprint, and the Thunderbolt on Verizon.
Seems like this is more HTC than the specific carrier to me.
This is good news. HTC is reviewing their bootloader policy:

Hopefully they'll let us unlock the bootloaders of phones they already released, like the Inc S and Inc 2.

Hopefully they'll let us unlock the bootloaders of phones they already released, like the Inc S and Inc 2.

Found this on the HTC Facebook page..
"There has been overwhelmingly customer feedback that people want access to open bootloaders on HTC phones. I want you to know that we've listened. Today, I'm confirming we will no longer be locking the bootloaders on our devices. Thanks for your passion, support and patience," Peter Chou, CEO of HTC
Hell yea I was just about to post that as well! I hope this means they will provide means to unlock currently locked phones.

XDA Phone

Hello,
I think XDA is the biggest Smartphone Community in the whole world,so why we don't make
a XDA Phone?
Designed and developed by XDA
We can make our "dream phone",our Rom,our parts!
I don't have so much ideas for the design, maybe someone has one^^.
Some parts
Rockchip
I know what sounds a bit crazy, but I think we have enough really good Developers and Engineers.
No offence , but your username makes me suspect the credibility of this thread .
Herpderp Backflip.
I actually had a quite wild thought about such thing too. I hope this will workout
Sadly I dont think we have the man power to get an actual phone going. We would be better off just asking an OEM to design a phone with such and such specs and design software around it.
Phone + XDA Sticker = Profit??
Sticker+Phone,not the best^^
Then the Chinese can make phones,we can do it,too!
Maybe we can contact a chinese Factory and ask them,so we produce cheap.
And maybe we don't have enough man power, but if we all work together as one person we will make it happen!
Design=easy
Parts=difficult
I think we have to make the design first, when we know which parts we can put in.
Big Phone=good parts
Small Phone= tiny=worse parts!
I'm not really good with product design (don't wonder I only make lines xD),but I think we can make it just like the Xiaomi M1 or Meizu MX 4
and we also have to see what the produce fair!
No child work, save working, getting enough paid (for me one of the most important things)!
this will never happen.

Such a long shot.
really? how much % of the world smartphone users population care or even know about XDA forum?
In Germany 80-90%,but we can make adds on some websites, just like Huawei do it in XDA
And I contacted Rockchip:
They want for the RK2918 150€=193$ per 10.000 mobile phones.
And I know what is a crazy plan, but think how it would be if we have our one phone:
Always updates, rooted and all that stuff,no one has to tell us the rules, beacuse we make them!
P.S.:I'm really happy that high ranked members are interseted for this!
Thanks!
I'd really love this idea. Have had it in my mind for quite a while.
If it would happen (God bless that) I would really love it to have a big NAND and the possibility to have multiple OSes installed in NAND Like WP7, Android and WinMo haha Just thoughts thou, but a better version of the HD2 is like the mother of all mobile hardware as long as it keeps the possibilities
Yes we can!
You know what .... this is such a freaking sick idea!!
You know what else? any one who says it cant be done should dif!!
Can I do this? No. I suck. Also time factor being a slave etc.
BUT you are going to tell me as a community we cant come together and make this happen? THIS.... THIS I would donate for.
IF A SINGLE LOWLY NOBODY can bild a freaking ipad....
WE CAN build an xda phone! WOW ! imagine what a revolution!
INstant gratifacation? doubtfull! But... imagine....building a phone that outperforms, outsells and out does everyphone....
A phone based on a community not on some GREEDY corporation.
YES it may cost A LOT. maybe even like 800$. or more.
BUT you could garuantee it not being obsolete for at least 5 years?
10,12 16 mp camera? quad core? How bout a phone based on pc design meaning, the phone is a shell, mother board, chips, internal memory can all be updated? even screen can be swapped for an updated version?
OMG the possibilities are endles!
MacGyver hardware phone!!! hells yeah!
Imagine... the demise of the iphony by the sword of xda!
I say bs to anyone who says this cant be done?
You cant telll me there are no members here who dont have lucrative funds to back this development
Jeez reverse engineer all the best phones and make it a super phone!
SEE? See? See, god, I told you should let me win the lottery! Now how am I gonna fund this superfantubulastical idea!! Well guesse i gotta sell my soul now....HEY! Satan! can I talk to you for a sec....
This will not and should not ever happen.
Not feasible.
Not needed.
XDA is a development forum not a brand.

1) Create a company to recycle used phones in a "green" way, for a fee.
2) Use the money to buy XDA stickers to put on phone, pocket the rest.
3) ???????
4) Profit
forget the phone, I just want a t-shirt...
I think that would be realy cool. It would be realy nice if we could get an Android phone that comes with root and an open bootloader right out of the factory. I actualy think there would be a market for that.
Would probably be hard, but it would be possible. You cant make it on your own but you could surly find a company in china that woul make the hardware. And xda could make the software.
I think the problem is that we would need quiet some money to get started.

i would only buy it if it had a serious SoC, like exynos or tegra 3, i wouldn't use snapdragon because the adreno GPU is a joke and the rocketchip looks cheap but i woud be in favor of a large NAND from multiple OS's but WinMo and WP7 wouldn't work as it's illegal to put them on anything that dosen't come with it but we could possibly put meego or the teizen, bada love child as long as it's open-sourced
Quite a brilliant idea actually, like those limited edition phones with maximized specs. Perhaps to use as a development phone perhaps? )
I'm doubting there'll be someone who wants to lead this project..
Hoping for it tho

Xperia Ion due in June for AT&T!?

So I have been checking the web constantly for the Ion release date. Though I have yet to find something concrete, something caught my eye yesterday. I did a google search for Xperia Ion and when the description came up for Sony's website, it said "Coming in June only from AT&T." Well I did the same search this morning so I could take a screen shot of what I saw and now the description says, "Coming Soon only from AT&T." I bet what I saw was accidentally put in the meta description then taken down. Hope this is correct. I'm due for upgrade in June and I really want the Ion. The One X is my second choice, but I really want that HDMI out!
Hope someone here has some inside information.
I figured out if you continuously hit refresh, the ad description updates. Here's the screenshot.

[EDIT] Also Pocketnow, ubergizmo, TechGeer and others
S3 CPU and Gingerbread? No thanks. Sony should at least have had an.S4 to appeal better vs phones like the One X and SGS3. Average consumer will prolly be swayed my the mp count but still, it should have been better overall

I disagree, partially. I really wished Sony would learn from previous experience and wouldn't be late to the quadcore party or at least come up with a 2012 SoC during 2012, but in the other hand some people will prefer the design and camera over other ubiquitous phones by other manufacturers.
Glad to see someone out there cares about this phone. I honestly expect the 4.0 update to be ready within a month of the release of the phone. I can't stand touchwiz or sense. I'm using a captivate atm. I immediately flashed a rom to get rid of touchwiz. I however have my x10 running wolf breaks tweaked stock 2.3 rom because I actually like the Sony UI. Besides, no phone on the market will have a camera comparable to the ion. 1.5ghz dual core seems like plenty of fire power for me. My captivate is smooth with ICS and a single core, don't see how the Sony won't do just as well, especially after the ICS update. The One X is my backup plan, but I really want that ION!

I wouldn't recommend HTC, their build quality and service are not comparable to Samsung, Apple or Sony.
Sammy always has the hottest hardware but their phones look plasticky and Touchwiz is not my taste. Matter of personal choices.
I'm currently using the Arc with ICS update.
Wow. That phone almost makes me want to go back to AT&T. GBs not that big of a deal, hopefully devs will jump on that phone pretty quickly and get some custom ROMs going...

Hi Orb3000, nice to see you again
You must reconsider your decission because the OP is NOT a question but a statement. The guy found an interesting slip in google advertising system which confirmed a June release date for the aforementioned phone.
Whatsmore, many recognized tech blogs acknowledged his finding and published notes about it, some even linking here to xda-devs as the source of the finding.
Just got my Xperia Ion! Here's a couple of photos next to my Xperia S, along with the Antutu benchmark!
Where did you get it from?
I'm hoping they announce it's release on AT&T very soon!
U got an S and an Ion??? SHOWOFF!!! eb

crazy
It's amazing to me how little AT&T is pushing this phone. You go to the AT&T website and you have to dig to find it (whereas the one x and the sgIII are on the front page). I understand those are higher end devices, but it seems as if AT&T doesn't really care at all about what is a pretty decent phone. Even when I walked into the AT&T store, they looked at me like I was crazy for asking for the ion (maybe they forgot how to sell anything other than iphones....)

The phone is finally visible on the site, I find it interesting..I emailed Sony about that and a few hours later the phone magically appeared!
I ordered my phone online through the website the day it was released (like you said had to dig through the search bar to find it). Unfortunately I was unable to upgrade from my end so I had to call 611.
At&t must not have told many people about its roll out because the rep who helped me had no clue that this phone existed but had no problem searching it himself and ordering it on his end. I emphasize this because he flat out told me he keeps up with all the employee updates and me asking about the phone was the first he ever heard of it.
Long story short he ordered the phone for himself and expressed my order so we both can baste in its awesomeness asap!

[Q] defy desert xmas12/13

Hey guys,
just some thoughts on our beloved device.
Seems this christmas a lot of users are just switching to a newer device. It is a subjecive observation for sure, but as I started following the forums this summer (meaning 2012) and finally gathered enough "self-esteem" to "hack" my defy+ and flash a non-official software I noticed it is getting really silent on the forums right now. There are a lot of good reasons for that. Could be that this device just isn't able to catch up with all the official updates. I mean, everything after 2.3.6 was only possible through the help of voluntary developers. It is a miracle to have the latest versions of Android on this phone. And if you think about it (not aiming to reduse the effort of the community) it was mainly because of the leading (and voluntary) example of Quarx.
It is just how it goes. Now, a lot of users, being driven by their inhabited impulse of jelaousy just switch to a younger device. The media promotes it. The companies pay for it. My question is: why? I bought this device (defy+) in winter 2011 (one year ago). And advertising tells me it is time to get a new one? Are you nuts? I like things that pay out. This must be a joke. It is already a "outdated device"? Only because Motorola itself doesn't want to give an update? I am convinced, that if we the users don't change our attitude, then companies can play with us as if we were puppets until we die. But is the technique really outdated? Why do we need an upgrade? To get faster downloads at the bus stop? To get a faster connection at work (although there are already to pcs, that we could use). What are we practically using these new devices for? Is there such a big need to pay for these upgrades that advertising suggests if we don't really have a use for them?
The main thing, they are usefull for is communication. And do we really need the newest hardware for that? The defy is very capable of dealing with our needs! And for the software there might be an even better choice than sticking to Google's.
With seeing that developement of alternative software for the defy is diminishing, I would like to point to the developers that spend so much effort on this device to just take a break and then go into the developement of the Firefox OS with at least the same or even bigger ambition that you have put to Google's crap (Google still crap btw, we do not really know and can't really expect what they are working for to achieve but humanitarian goals aren't it).
Thanks for your contribution, I owe you a lot.

Oh, man, how much do I agree on this! Very much!
Anyhows... I do agree with you, brother and I both bought DEFY's last winter and I don't see an ACTUAL reason to replace it... Yes, I would love a bigger screen, better camera, faster CPU, more RAM... But the truth is I don't need any of those, as the DEFY does everything I need. Texting, surfing, gaming, multimedia... I'm not going to change it soon. And I do hope developers will stick with it for a little while longer
Cheers, buddy!
