I'd like to connect my EVO to my desktop LCD monitor to watch video on bigger screen. Has anyone tried it yet? Anyone know of a micro HDMI (type D) to DVI cable or an adapter? thanks.

you might be able to make your own... just get an DVI to HDMI cable and splice on a type D end to it, not sure if it will go backwards though...
thanks, but I am interested in making sure I am going about the right way. I want make sure all the HDMI 1.4 features are supported in this solution and its fully compatible. Has anyone tried it yet?
Not really sure what HDMI 1.4 features you expect to get when your end connector is a DVI port. If you cant find a cable that goes from the Evo to DVI then you should be able to just go to HDMI then use an adapter to go to DVI. I used have my computer hooked up to my Home Theater via a DVI <> HDMI cable. Worked great, Full HD and all.
thanks. I read there a bunch of new features in hdmi 1.4 and wanted to make sure I go with an optimal option. Seems like an hdmi cable and a DVI adapter is the way to go. This way I can connect to hdtv and lcd monitor.
Yes, its true that HDMI 1.4 is great and has a lot of new things, including 3D support. But keep in mind, this is a phone. It doesn't even output 1080p video, so you'll be fine with the adapter.
Yeah, it can only to 720p output to a monitor/TV.
Something else to consider, HDMI integrates video and audio over 1 connection. If you use a DVI converter, you will lose the audio. I don't know if the EVO will allow you to output the audio out via the headphone jack at the same time or not, but I very much doubt it. So in other words, by converting the signal, you're going to lose all the audio and kinda makes it useless.

Sure, you can get an HDMI to DVI With Audio converter..but then again, you might as well buy a new monitor with DVI inputs for the price..

When I had my G2x with micro HDMI out, I bought all kines of cables to plug it into the TV from the comfort of my bed, and I really only used once or twice.
Maybe in the future I'll buy it but I think it will end up in my cable's cabinet.

I think people who travel or game more will use it. I hook my phone up to hotel rooms to watch Netflix and my dish network programming/dvr. Gamers may want a bigger screen.

How does this play out with USB host mode in Android?
Do I need another adapter for host mode? Or can I use this one while I also have HDMI out?

Using the HDMI adapter and playing games with a controller can only be done with a bluetooth controller? Is there any way I can use HDMI and a USB PS3/360 controller?
(using the PS3 wireless is not a option for me i cannot get the app and phone to work together)

works wonders. i am 4.0.2 stock.
it uses full hdmi. 1$ on ebay.
it has a charging port, but it shows plugged in as usb charger even when plugged into the wall. it only draws enough power to power keep the charge constant, that is your battery does not go down, nor does it go up. and no, you cannot connect usb host when watching in mhl mode. would have been cool, but doesnt work.
One more thing, apparently THE PHONE HAS TO BE PLUGGED IN FOR THE MHL ADAPTER TO WORK. So, unless you plug in the charger, the mhl adater wont give output.

Wow. So emulator+wifi+bluetooth+mhl= dead phone. 500ma is not enough to keep the GN floating.
Seems like a huge oversight on Google's part or perhaps it's just a MHL limitation. I know data does not work, which is why people have to use BT. But 500ma, what a joke.

Does the MHL to HDMI work with Android Movies? I know on my stock Transformer TF101 HDMI out is blocked in Movies. ...worked fine for Netflix and others though.
As far as battery is concerned. Would it be possible to program the screen to turn off when viewing in HDMI and still view it on the TV? seems like this would cut battery consumption dramatically. If not you could set the screen brightness to as low as possible.

So it looks like the only option is to use some sort of dual charging situation where one charges the MHL adapter and the other charges the phone via pogo.
Perhaps the native HDMI doc allows AC charging? I guess we will have to wait and see.
I have a normal tv with video in/out ports. Is it possible to connect SGS2 to a normal tv (not a HD one) using the MHL cable? I have seen a video on YouTube where someone has connected the Galaxy S with a cable in 3.5 mm audio port of the mobile to a tv set for a video output. Will this be possible with SG2?

AS far as i know this is not Possibile in Galaxy S2.
U can connect ur HD TV with HDMI Cable, but not standard TV with 3.5mm Jack.
i Dont know why SAMSUNG hasnt given this feature on GS2, it would be great if that feature was there.

MHL outputs a digital signal.
Standard TVs that do not have HDMI, with RCA jacks, take in an analog signal.
Something needs to convert the signal, so you need a Digital to Analog Converter, or DAC.

Probably because it would take more hardware to do so. Which increases production costs, and would have made the phone larger. There is a ton of stuff crammed into the phone as it is. It is basically a pocket sized computer.
If you can afford this phone, how can you not afford a TV that has an HDMI input?
I connected the MHL cable to a VISIO 720p television and it didn't work, I suppose that MHL sends 1080i/p signals only and your television must, at least, be able to handle this resolution and rescale it.

Not true. Any tv with an HDMI input will work. Doesn't have to be 1080i/p. Did you plug in a power source?

Yes, I just got a complete greenish screen. On the other hand all FullHD capable televisions I tested worked perfectly.

Huh. That's very weird. There shouldn't be an issue with plugging it into a 720p. In fact, I don't think the video output will even be 720p, let alone 1080i/p, unless the output is a video that is that resolution.

I think either the GS2 or the MHL adapter will upscale the image to 1080 regardless the resolution supported by the TV. But it's in fact weird because HD ready should support at least 1080i.
I have seen mini-USB to composite output cable (audio -left and right seperated- and S-Video output cables) for SGS2 on a shopping site but couldn't remember which one now. So it must be possible.

That could be. I can't test, as it works on I everything own... I don't own a TV or monitor that is less than 1080p.

I have my doubts about this - at least, the part that it was for an SGS2. MHL is a digital signal. S-Video is analog. So either the cable was REALLY expensive, or maybe they were trying to pass off a micro-USB to S-Video cable that it (falsely) works for the SGS2? Or it was actually for an SGS1?
The green screen on MHL/HDMI output happens, because of non HDCP compliant TV. All content that we get out of the USB to HDMI adapter is copy protected (HDCP).
I noticed this while I wanted to connect it to as HDMI to SDI converter. Also no capture card will accept this signal. Only HDCP TV and monitor will work.
I'm trying to figure out now how I can get 1080p desktop and gallery output.

I read HDMI on "normal" TV (not HD) works if you use VGA adaptator.
A person on the forum i saw, gives a links to buy one and it was 40$ (For MHL adaptator + VGA adaptor that you need to input in the MHL)

My point above, is that the standard MHL adapter is only like $15. So it would be an additional cost to get ANOTHER adapter to plug that into a TV without an HDMI input. So $40 for that whole get-up would be more expensive. Less expensive than I thought it would be, but still more.
And based on what erzyk says in post 17, there is no guarantee this would work due to standard TVs not being HDCP compliant. But I'm just speculating.
Someone could buy this $40 mystery cable and test it out, I guess. It's just not gonna be me.

So I don't have an hdtv (*gasp*) and I'd like to connect my SIII via cradle to the TV for streaming netflix. Whats the best option for me? I can s-vid or standard composite into the tv but no hdmi/hdtv.
I did a bit of googling and it doesn't look like converting from an hdtv cable to either s-vid or composite is all that convenient.
Are there any options for me?
I'd like to be charging while connected to the tv as well so if there's a cradle that'll work for that, that'd be sweet.

Converting Digital to Analog is possible but expensive for units that do it right.
You're better off looking into a new TV purchase for the cost and headache of the converters. You can get a outstanding 37" Tv for under $400 these days, that cheaper than the cost of your phone off contract. Heck I got my parents a 55" for $700 just this winter.
do i have to convert? meaning do i have to run a micro-usb to hdmi and then convert from there? is it not possible to pull non-digital audio and vid from the phone via the same micro-usb port but in analog format from the get-go?
I have used my DInc to transmit video to my in-car entertainment system so my kid could watch shows on NetFlix during our hour drives in the morning and evening. I just got the SIII and would like to do the same. It seems like no one makes a small 12V screen that has HDMI, they all have composite video so upgrading the screen in my SUV won't work.
I figured I have 4 options;
1. Buy the MHL to HDMI adapter and a HDMI to Composite video adapter and cross my fingers and hope it works
2. Get something like the AllShare Cast Dongle but convert it to Composite or hope they make a version that has composite out
3. Buy another device like a cheap tablet and hand that to him sharing my data over wifi or hook up a roku to the existing screens
4. Setup my old phone as a WiFi only device to continue streaming the same as I have been but sharing my data
Since I heard the MHL to HDMI adapters are touchy about what they hook up to and the AllShare dongle is not yet on the market, I have purchased a $100 tablet of DX.com. Figured adapters were going to cost me at least $80, why not spend $20 more and have a tablet he can also play games and read books on. Plus his LeapPad I bought last year was $100 and it sucks. I have not hooked that up yet but I did tether my Galaxy Tab 10.1 today and it worked pretty well.
I don't think my solution will work for you but if your end game is streaming netflix or hulu, you might consider getting a Roku for $50-$100(depending on model), root your phone and tether the data. If you are doing something a Roku doesn't, then you will need to buy a HDMI to Composite adapter because everything right now seems to only have HDMI out, even the AllShare Dongle

Is there any way I can directly output from the Nexus 7 to composite? Or do I have to go Nexus 7 > HDMI > HDMI to Composite Converter > TV? I'm just searching around for the cheapest possible solution, thanks!

That's a mess lol, so many adaptors, anyway for getting hdmi signal from the nexus 7 you would use a Slimport Adaptor like this, or you can use the official Slimport brand adaptor for 15 bucks more, the

Yeah i know what are you trying to do, but actually the only way to get wired audio/video signal is to use the slimport adaptor. (With wireless you would use Miracast but this isn't your case) So in your case you must use the slimport, the hdmi to composite adaptor and i think you should be good.

It would work fine with every device that support Slimport, newer devices do like LG G2, G Pad 8.3, Nexus 5 and so on. But you should check on the specifications of your devices. Before Slimport productors used to support MHL, which is almost the same but it keeps busy the USB port and on display that doesn't support MHL you should even buy an adapter which even needs external power supply.. if you can see on the Analogix Slimport adaptor you got a microUSB and the HDMI, the first is just for using it as the device one and HDMI for streaming. I was reading that Slimport has some limitations about the length of the HDMI cable, something like that it needs to be not longer than 50 centimeters otherwise you'd encounter problems..
Anyway i think that the Slimport adapter that costs just 15 bucks will be great.

Alright, looks like the SlimPort isn't going to work with the Samsung devices. Is there a cheap alternative so I can switch between Nexus 7 and the other devices? Specifically the S3 and S2 (Epic 4G Touch)

I think the only way is to use Wi-Fi Direct/DLNA. If you're gonna cast your screen just for viewing youtube, netflix and stuff like that, you could use the Chromecast, which does that particular job. It can't cast the entire screen but movies, audio (and other DLNA stuff) and compatible apps (you need to see on its webpage) can right now. To cast the entire screen you would need the Miracast technology but i don't know if there are any good dongles on the market that permit to do that as chromecast does. I hope you know what I mean, i'm not a native english speaker
You should take a look at the Chromecast if that can do what you need, or you can see Miracast dongles like this but i can't suggest anything
OK, I'm trying to do the same. I bought a slimport adapter and a HDMI to composite adapter. My N7 works just fine from slimport to HDMI to the TV, but doesn't work when I add the HDMI to composite adapter. However, if I hook my cable box through HDMI to the composite adapter, all works well. So its something from that slimport out of the tablet to the other adapter. What I'm trying to do is get the display mirrored in my van for the kids and the van only has composite inputs. I'm at a loss.
