LCD Desire DIY Repair - Desire General

Helllo..
This is an older post, I did this about 4-6 months ago.
The screen broke in a tight pocket during a car trip.
So, I of course first contacted the local general electronics store where I bought it from. So, after 2 weeks or so I was contacted, they had for some reason shipped it to another city, and also told me that they'd charge 270 € for the repair. No way, I could almost buy a new one with that price.
So, being the slight DIY guy that I am, I placed an order for a new LCD screen and a torx M5 screwdriver kit from mytrendyphone.com, where I also ordered the new case shown in the pics.
I used this as a guide (Printed it out)
Blog: HTC Desire tear-down and re-assembly TJworld
The process took 30 minutes and my Desire is now in perfect working order.
Here are some pics.
Starting
Here's where the screen was cracked
Everything removed, ready to start
Voided the 'Void' stickers
About to remove main PCB
Removed
And after several steps in which I either forgot or we're unable to take pics (The fingerprints are on the screenprotector, I did not remove the digitizer, only the LCD itself)
So, for anyone wondering, if you have no experience working with electronics whatsoever, it's better to leave it to the pros even if it pays some extra. I had assembled a few custom lightsabers, so I had a bit of an idea what I was doing.
Total cost for the LCD+screwdriver+shipping to Finland = 101,50 €
Quite a save

Thanks for this. A mate usually fixes the screens but this will be helpful.

Price: $4.08 free shipping
I just ordered 2 This renders the protection screens useless.
Cheers!
Cool, just have to find out if it is really genuine! You never know, its DX.. If it actually is, bye bye irritating screen protectors.
I will post photos when I receive it. I'm eager to remove the thick plastic cover I use to protect the screen - the touch sensitivity is definitely affected by its thickness.
I doubt this is a genuine part - what's important is to work as such.
DX is slow during christmas and new year season, so you might have to wait a long time for it. Also the hong kong post is slow now
But i am waiting eagerly for the photos!
Hope it will perform well.
i just orderd this one..
http://cnn.cn/shop/sonyericsson-xperia-digitizer-p-6916.html
its working 100% and its oem. only 5$ for shipping. also its really hard taking off the original digitizer/glass. its glued on so make sure you take your time when your doing it because you can break your lcd. also the one i purchased was pre-glued with plastic on it so it was easy to put on.
I doubt there is a difference between these two, considering the price.
OMG, I just buy a piece from eBay for $7 + $3 shipping fee. poor me....mad:

I'm still waiting my order ... dealextreme free shipping, you know
hi.. i am working on a new project with touchscreen..
can any one provide me links where i could buy this module...
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.32335
Here u go. The same link is in the first post.
I've just recived mine, here are some photos. How it works i will be able to tell next week, i think, because I don't think i am able to change it myself.
I'm afraid the cargo camel that brings the goods from hongkong probably has a flat tyre somewhere in the desert... so my digitizer is still on the way.
For anyone that had experience replacing the digitizer, does it involve soldering??
I don't think it needs soldering. I fitted one to my Orbit 2 and that had a similar ribbon like the X1 digitizer. It just has connector that the ribbon pushes into.
This is an excellent screen protector to protect your new digitizer: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.23639
They do not need soldering. Just got done replacing mine with this a few weeks back. Took me about 3 hours. I also purchased this set of tools as well: dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.29544
They are invaluable, if I didn't have them I would have never got past the first couple steps.
I used this tutorial mostly (along with a couple others) to guide my way thru: formymobile.co.uk/xperiadisassembly.php
There are also many other ones if you google X1 disassembly. The only part I F-ed up on was during the removal of the metal trim ring that is glued to the old broken digitizer module. This is very thin. I bent mine in a couple of spots. Use a heat gun to warm it and it will slide right off.
Reassembly went OK. If I remember right something fell out and I couldn't figure out where it went but after looking at multiple guides I figured it out.
Mine works 100%, already ordered another one. I see they also have the actual LCD screen now too at Dealextreme.
Thanks for the info. I think I got some water leak in the digitizer. A little bit of the upper right corner area was not working last week. But the whole touch panel is not working today (already flash stock rom back to make sure it's not software issue). I think I will just buy the LCD+Digitizer in ebay (about $40) and let's see how it goes....
Just want to report back. My touchscreen is back to working with the new LCD+Digitzer. $29 form here: http://www.ezelektronix.com/index.php?target=products&product_id=1872&current_cat_id=276 which is relatively cheap. Takes 2 weeks for me to receive the package.
Hi all
So I finally got my parcel from AX
Can someone tell how to replace it
Thanks in advance
i changed the Digitizer only.
with help of a heatgun and a sharp knife.
Hi guys,
I remember I also bought a digitizer once for a HTC prophet and the quality was noticeably lower than the original. I lost contrast on screen and had other issues. Is this one exactly the same quality as the original touch screen ?

HTC Desire Screen Replacement

Right so long story cut short, my beloved Desire has decided to stop working after being dropped from a small height by a friend, the glass has cracked, the LCD is bleeding, while the digitiser seems to work fine still. Is there anywhere recommended that will replace it for me? Or any decent site selling OEM parts?
Cheers
i have also had an accident with mine. the lcd screen seems to be ok but the glass cover cracked in a million placed. took it to a few repair places and are all pretty confident it can be fixed. only problem is the parts for the phone are not out yet as its so new. have been told it could be up 2 a month. contacted htc but they cant give me a quote, i have to send it to them first.
bump, might take a few pictures of it for your entertainment
Sounds like your friends owes you a new Desire!
Cracked Screen... ME TOO!
I too have had the unfortunate displeasure of seeing my brand new desire drop to the ground on my tiled floor bathroom and land in just the right position fo the screen to crack. Have insurance but as I had just that day switched to a new phone and contract with orange hadn't switched the IEMI number over with my insurer. Long story but didn't realise I had to switch as I have never claimed AS THE INSURANCE COMES WITH MY BANK ACCOUNT NEEDLESS TO SAY INSURANCE DOESNT COVER IT FOR 15 DAYS AFTER YOU REGISTER THE EMEI NUMBER OF THE NEW PHONE... so beware folks honest isn't always the best policy and sometimes having insurance with your phone provider can be a better option!..
No new screens available from any UK repAIRER YET SO WILL HAVE TO WAIT IT OUT WITH A HALf visible (but still working) screen.
I just joined your club.
I dropped my desire just 15 minutes ago onto some concrete stuff.
The glass screen is totally obliterated.....but the phone still works.
So 2 questions.
- Can I but just the glass part and replace it ? the underneath screen is ok
- How much can it cost ? ( if it's possible in europe...if not in canada or usa)
Both display and digitizer can be currently found on the internet, they're not cheap though...
http://www.dealsniper.com/en/home/2563-htc-desire-glass-touch-screen-digitizer-replacement-7.html
http://www.iphone-spares.com/htc-parts/desire-lcd-screen-google-g7
They say LCD, I'd say it's a mistake, not sure though.
Are you kidding?
If it's just 60$ then it's very very cheap......
I will try to buy it.
Ps:
read this : http://tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-tear-down
it's a photo tear-down and re-assembly guide on how to replace the broken glass digitiser
howzit guys
i see on the net that theres a new desire coming out and its got a lcd screen coz of the bad visibility in sunlight of our amoled screens
where can we get these lcd screens - mayb its better to fit a lcd onetime instead of amoled again
I also have a broken display.
And last week I ordered a new one on ebay. I got it today, but when I installed it, it wasn't working. Only a faded green light on the right side of the screen.
The phone booted ok (vibration at the beginning and the sound when it's booted - pin request).
Then I took the new screen out and began an close inspection. I was amazed that I found a freaking hole in the display (the original does not have one, obviously).

shrani.si/f/1X/35/FLeujkL/p3300159.jpg
(there is an tireless w810i behind the screen with led on, u can clearly see the light shining through the display)
I'm going to send the pictures to the seller, and see what he says about it..
Anyone had similar experience? Or any explanation about the holes? (there actually two, second one is right on the edge, can't take a photo of that one..)

HTC Desire screen broken

I dropped my HTC Desire and i have no display, i can see crack on the LCD. Can anyone help me how to get replacement LCD or get it repaired.
Get in touch with htc support. They will collect it from you free of charge and tell you how much the repair cost would be.
If youre in the uk I can give you the number, otherwise do an email contact on the website. They respond fast.

I emailed HTC and surprisingly they answered very quickly and they asked me to book it for repair on Monday and I'll update you how much it costs.
This would be useful information, I dropped my Magic quite a number of times and it survived, but with the much larger screen on the Desire... I am really afraid to drop it.

Ohh maan! This morning my Desire was on a bedside cabinet and in some kind of mood I swiped it off and it hit the floor and the screen came out and cracked the glass and the case!!! I desperately tried putting it together but ended up pulling more of it apart and as the device got bigger the wires inside snapped and the glass shattered
Then I woke up

dropped mine a few weeks ago and the screen cracked, have been trying the local repair shops but the part isnt available yet. contacted htc and they arranged for a courier to collect it this morning. they werent able to give me a quote over the phone but would get back in touch within 5 days with a cost for repair. really hope its not overly expensive but i have a bad feeling
They gonna collect my phone tomorrow and cost of repair around £150 approx.
got quoted £119. not sure how its broken down though, i have 2 different levels of repait one at £45 and one at £28. not sure why when there is only one thing wrong and thats the glass. i have contacted them again though.
apparently if i want it back without them repairing it it will be £15 they kept that bit quiet.
on another topic, does anyone know when the local mobile phone repair shops will have the parts for the desire
My screen cracked this morning.
Called them and the lady quoted me £65.37 for the repair,
£11 for UPS then VAT on top so roughly £90.
Declined, thinking the local stores would be cheaper
but none of them have the part in stock.
Looks like I've no choice but to call back HTC and
hope they return the phone is asap.
Next time I'll buy a case for the phone since
the "screen" protector didn't protect the damn screen!
Okay finally got the actual quote screen costs £45 and £28 for some repair and £28 labour plus VAT so final cost £119.
I'm getting mine back tomorrow from repair also, cost me £120ish which was a bummer, but to be honest I was expecting more, with iPhone screens and digitisers costing up to £100 on their own
spare part
Hi,
I repair HTC Desire cracked screen myself, it's not so hard as it looks. If somebody is interested, I have two HTC Desire digitizer for £40 at my location in Czech republic and I can send it anywhere.
Just contact me at [email protected]
I cracked my Desire's screen last tuesday, in friday i sent my cell to the service and they did not tell me what will be the price of repairing my htc.
I am not such an expert with repairing phones so I will have to pay for the service. Will update with the price.
Got my phone back yesterday, and a case came today. Same phone as before, and all in great condition and working well, other than some dust now stuck under the screen which I might try to get some money knocked off for

I've never used a screen protector in my life and not really a big fan of them.
Good call on buying the case, stands up to a lot more damage than an invisible shield can and also protects the rest of the phone, not just the screen.
here is something rediculous for you, HTC Service Centre charges you around 28 quid to format and restore original firmware its they have to do after repairing the handset.
Just spoke to the HTC repair centre this afternoon and I have to say I'm not happy.
Stupidly dropped the phone last Tuesday and smashed the screen. Called HTC that afternoon and they had it uplifted the following morning.
First thing friday I get a quote, £128 which I promptly (but grudgingly) authorised and then expected the phone back either today or tomorrow as they said it would take no more than 5 days.
However, having heard nothing I called them for an update and was told rather interestlingly that they'd been "overwhelmed by the number of returned Desires with smashed screens" and were now out of stock of the replacement parts!
What's more (yes, it gets worse) their expected arrival is now been held up by (you've guessed it) the current problems being caused by the volcanic ash and it could be another week before I'll get the phone back!

replacing screen glass

Hi All
had a bit of a mishap this morning and dropped my phone off the couch, normally it would of landed on the floor (carpet) but it bounced off my morning cuppa so i now have an Xperia play with a cracked screen
luckily (sort of anyway) the main chip is on the side and the screen only has 4 very clean cracks across it and it is still perfectly smooth and still works fine
ive looked on ebay and it seems you can get the replacement glass for around £20, my main question is it hard to replace as they all come with some tools and a guide, i am very good with fiddly things so i would be happy doing it but i dont want to waste £20 if it ends up not looking right
so any advice please guys
Sorry I can't give you a link but try to.search youtube on how to.dissamble your xplay model. You need to take the whole phone apart to get to the damn screen. A very long looking process

Check with your carrier and ask about repairs outside of warranty. The carrier I'm with, Rogers, pays a subsidy for repairs that warranty doesn't cover. For example, screen costs 50 bucks at a repair centre, they cover it. Main board costs 150, they make me pay part of it.
Just a shot in the dark, but if a greedy company like Rogers will do that, yours might too.

Hi,
unfortunatly my phone contract is for a Samsung Galaxy S as they didnt have the XP in stock at the time so i took it home sold it on ebay and purchased an XP so i dont think they will help
ive seen the vid on youtube and it seems a long and fiddly process to remove the screen so i think i will pass and come payday sell the cracked one and just buy a good condition new one looking on ebay it will end up costing me less then £50 so its not too bad
Dude, i dont know if is the best thing to do but i disassembled my XP and it is not hard, the only problem that i see is the dusty, it enters on screen and you dont realize, after assembled you will see and cry. Now deppending of the time of use and price i m a candidate to buy your cell . By any way if you decide change by your self take a look on the advice of the Hair Cleaner, it softens the glue that hold the screen.
And do not tighten the screw of the mother board too much, this will save your gamepad.

Where to get replacement LCD connector cheap or dead Moto 360 to cannibalize?

After I replaced battery (dead after 2 years) after 3 months the watch just fell apart, tearing in two one of the two thin flexible connector stripes that go from LCD to the main body. Where can I find a replacement part, or maybe someone has a dead Moto 360 for cheap so I can cannibalize it for the replacement? I thought of buying a new watch, but it's disappointing that the prices are high and there is almost no progress in functionality in 2.5 years. And cheap Chinese smartwatches are very bad. The only website that has "Watch LCD Screen and Digitizer Assembly" that I wound has it "out of stock".
Thanks, any advice appreciated.
while I don't have the answer to your question I can tell you why your watch fell apart after the repairs.
There are 4 tiny plastic retaining clips that need to be properly removed during disassembly, and then reinstalled during reassembly. They are very easy to loose if you don't know they are there, and pretty much all guides (including iFixIt) make no mention of the clips. I found the info on them by accident so I've been trying to spread the word on this important step.
+1 on those clips. I thought they were bits broken off as I removed the innards for the battery repair. Ended up with the watch in the same state as midirt; torn cables. As a result, I do now have a G1 360 available for parts (including a new battery, but minus those clips ) and two chargers. (If there is a more proper place to offer these up please accept my apologies and let me know where, I'll get it there).
