General Discussion-Bootloader petition and donations - Acer Iconia Tab A100

Figured I'd start a general discussion thread about the petition to Acer and also about raising the bounty to interest more devs.
We can discuss these things in here rather than polluting other threads

Will be donating what I can the beginning of Feb.

willing to donate as well

Awesome! Thanks guys!
I don't expect we'll get thousands but anything will help. If we can even raise enough for one device to get it to a dev, that would be awesome!
On another note, we seem to be doing well with the petition so far! Tell your friends, share on Facebook, make sure you "like" it which makes it go viral in other people's feeds etc!

I signed the petition already, but I don't know how much a dev can do to specifically unlocking a bootloader. I understand the bootloader is encrypted, which means that unless we have they key we won't be able to boot our own custom roms flashed through recovery. Although I have been following on my Droid3 forums about how devs have created some workaround solutions for using the stock bootloader and somehow getting around it, although I believe it is more complicated than that. The user Hashcode knows a lot about that sort of stuff on the motorola droid platforms. I'm not sure how much he can help but it might be a good starting point?

I gotta get in front of a real computer so I can donate a few bucks.
Can somebody reach out to Hashcode, he might be willing to help out.

[Must read] broken forum

Devs, n00bs, seniors, everyone. Please calm down.
N00bs..read before you post. This is a big cause to recent drama. I read a thread today and the same question was asked and answered on like3 straight pages... this is not called for.
Devs please consider the level of readiness before posting a Rom. My fav developer makes his Rom as close to bug free by having about 10 guys test the Rom before he releases it. Doing this would cut back on n00b questions and stupid posts. I love all you work this is just an idea.
Everyone else please don't fight and make things worse. Help the n00bs with links to forum rules and such.
I make all these mistakes too. But we need to fix it. We are losing our community.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda premium
I'll add to this a bit if you don't mind. Any noobs feel free to pm me whatever the question may be and I will try to help. There is no sense starting a new thread because 99%of the time the question has been answered and i honestly I like to help. I don't have time to develop so this is my attempt to give back to a community I got a lot out of. I may not have your answer but will most likely be able to send you in the right direction and knipp is extremely helpful and knowledgeable as well. I personally don't care but don't post a thread like help plz I bricked my phone in the dev section unless you have a pair of flame retardant pants. Look bottom line is I'm here to help if anyone needs it
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
Also knipp what do you think about starting a kind of all in one place thread similar to what's stickied in the dev section only a little more recent and updated with an faq? I don't know how many times I posted the gingerbread ruu for people recently. If you don't have the time I can do it or certainly help at the very least. Just wanted to get your opinion on this matter

This. It's extremely refreshing when a dev spends good time creating a ROM for a phone. It's nice to be handed a ROM that has been tested and is essentially bug free. I praise the guys that do that, and the guys that stick to their work. Doing it for fun rather than for money.
Of course I'm not expecting a good ROM to fall into our laps, I do like to follow projects from start to finish just as long as the dev(s) are working solely on that project - Like Cyanogen.
I agree about posting ROMs that are fully tested.. but then only 10 or so get to enjoy the ROM until it's stable. It's nice having everyone give feedback because 100 testers is better than 10. But I 100% agree with you, we need to get this community back on track, and we as users can help indefinitely.
We need to remember, not too long ago we we n00bs. I didn't even know what an .apk was. Now I know how to edit and decompile .apks.
Let's help to make this a fun and sharing community again.

Donation thread for possible continued development

first off. no, i dont want to make the donations myself, i just thought that if we get a donations thread rolling it will be easier to dum up all of it for when or if we can get some development rolling.
to start off the donations im willing to pledge 100$.
if users/mods think this isnt appropriate to post here just let me know and ill ask it be removed.
thanks in advance
100 views and no replies, I'll get in on this myself if we're making a pledge thread, I'll pledge $50 if we get solid working CWM etc, or if we make the goal the cost of an unlocked device I'll chip in the same amount. If one of the mods or interested devs wanted to start a chipin.com pledge, we could actually start collecting the money.
This thread confuses me.

It was moved from the Glide sub forum to the general one. This thread is for the Captivate Glide which is a relatively new phone with not much development going on for it yet and Team Hacksung has expressed interest in porting CM9 to it if we can get them a device.
OP, lilbucky,
You may want to clarify the title of this thread to avoid confusion and to help others with the Glide to easily find this thread.
I guess that's what happens when two completly different phones get shoved together for no reason.

All current 989 Devs, PLEASE READ!

I've been a "watcher" too long in this community. It's time to contribute back what I can.
I have a server doing nothing, and I'd love to waste as much bandwidth as I can.
If you're a developer for a ROM, and you'd like to have PHP, FTP, perl, sql, etc support, please reply to this thread or message me directly, and I'd be more than happy to get things set up for you ASAP. This is a new device, with a fantastic development community, and I think every developer deserves a chance for success. An email address, along with a website will help accomplish this for determined individuals. I don't plan on ever letting go of the domain names, or the server that I have.
Cheers you guys.
P.S. > Also, if someone wouldn't mind helping keep this thread active by posting articles or links to publishers with books available to teach me how to develop, that would be fantastic. I know this fits a little closer with "General", but its important, I think, that developers get involved in this, because of the huge possibility of misinformation.

I was really, really hoping this thread wasnt going to be moved to general, because now it is probably never going to be read by the developers. If by any chance you know someone who is developing roms for the sgsii, or how to get ahold of people who are, i would love to spearhead this project and get their hosting up asap. I would love to have a website for your rom, a central hub for tools, resources, and links, but i dont have any of the web development knowledge or background to even know what cms software would work best. Ive installed hundreds of vbulletin boards back in the day (when pirating vbulletin and ipb was fun). I know how to use cpanel very well, how to modify apache and php settings, and how to setup mysql, but i guess ive been out of the loop too long. Help me out guys. Lets get a website going for these awesome developers.

you might have not noticed, but the DEVs do read the General forum as well
in fact we keep asking people to keep the comments on General, unless they are of development value, then they should reply back to the DEV topic
but as usual newbies never listen

Calling all custom rom users..........

Hello everyone,
We as a community have taken advantage of the work of our rom/theme devs. Each rom i use i donate $30. If the dev releases an update i throw them another $30. Android survives on its development and the devs are the ones to thank for making our phones awesome. Im not saying you are a **** for not donating but we all need to.
Keeping this short. Thankyou for reading.
Now go support xda so we all can keep enjoying wonderful mods/hacks.

While this is a great thought, not everybody can afford to donate to every dev on XDA. Although it's a nice gesture to make donations to the devs, people shouldn't be made to feel like they have to.

Sorry for my bad english
Developers here due it for the love of it. If they wanted to make money they can use the market.
While it is nice in no way is it ever required or even asked for. It is just that. A donation. Given freely and anonymously.
Right. Just trying to promote it

Market can be fun lol tho I like doing roms for the fun of things donation are nice if folks love it and if they want to also thanks are welcomed. Keeps the coffee pot full so you can stay awake at night . Tweaking the rom and having fun with things.
I still offer the same great stuff and help even if I don't get a thanks or a donation for all the effort cause I like to keep folks happy and on track

A donation is cool, but i'm fine with a "Thank you" every now and then.
I agree these devs are incredible and do deserve it
Like a few other posts say its not something everyone can do especially when flashing multiple roms
When I use something of a devs and cannot donate I make sure I contribute in someway..of course I say thanks but there are other ways
If i use a Rom and a friend asked what should I try say hey I used this devs he's great. And he says to his friend and on it goes that dev gets more users more input on bugs more people to donate etc

What ever the form of thanks, just be sure to give it!
Times are tough right now, and every understands having tight wallets.
When you're able to throw some thank$, maybe you'll remember the help you've gotten in the past.
...just my two cents
I agree
Yes I really agree and think that we should donate. Donations make devs keep up the good work. and improve the rom even more. Those devs really make our devices better. For example my device LG optimus GT-540 sucks. but with devs such as Mur4ik or Mikegapinski we are up to date with the android OS

same here, money is tight (im in england so we english people use £'s) so i can only afford what i need in reality not the internet, just a simple thanks from me. sorry guys but not all of us can throw away money in these rough times in england ;(
BUT, when i get some money, and things here where i live have cleared up then i can donate
I am setting up paypal now, if people wanna donate to me or anyone, then go ahead, once i get some money, then i will donate to people,
I donate to the dev's when I use something they have created/developed, and so far without fail, they have all been grateful and send a thank you email. It's cool to see a community function well. Thank you to all the devs.
Using custom rom on my MB200, but not much I can do with the bad processor.
most Devs appreciate either donations or thanks ( or both ) , so we can all do our part as best we can
I agree with all of you. It is important to show the devs our appreciation, both using the "Thank you" button and donating as well. When my situation with the money becomes better, i will donate to some. Got my Samsung Galaxy S since 2010 & I have tested a lot of roms. The effort that the devs are giving into development is incredible!
I'm a developer, and personally, a Thanks is enough
A donation is like gold

Sent from my One V using xda app-developers app
there's no "groups or teams" we BUILD CM10\AOKP\PA all from source i work on Base rom's which is CM9\CM10\AOSP when the CM* rom's get stable enough i pass them to maxwen and he finishes them off, which gives me free time to de-stress and spend time with girlfriend and work on other projects.
for CDMA JMZtaylor builds the Base rom's which are CM9\CM10
we work together......seeing threads like this drives me up the wall

Dude,
XDA is NOT a support site of any kind.
It is a forum for developers, yes it has grown massivley over the years, but in general most folks on here are at least kinda techie, geeky, or both. There are also many users who just want to download cool stuff. There is nothing wrong with that but devs get annoyed when "users" don't want to take the time to learn forum rules, read, or do a bit of research.
Every dev on here is a volunteer, they do what they do because they enjoy it, and like being involved in a community of like minded folk who know the devices we spend our cold hard cash on are usually capable of much more than manufacturers like to release. Yes, there are "teams" large and small but they do not get paid for this, work under deadlines, or are expected to provide any support.
I don't mean to sound too cold, but with a little reading and research you could have found out all you needed to know about the CM team, AOKP, etc AND read in Lior's dev thread that his build is UNOFFICIAL meaning not an officially supported device by the actual aokp team. Even if it were an officially supported device that would not mean timetables, support, or warranty. Seriously, do a little research.
And understand, when you joined in August what number were you? Did you watch the "you are a noob" video, I made my son watch that when he joined. There are LOTS of new people here who demand, are rude etc. I am not saying that you are necasarily one of them, but when each device can count the number of devs on two hands or less, compared to the number of registered XDA users and you can see how a dev like Lior could get upset at your lack of wanting to read.
In the future, until you have contributed to this forum please refrain from even using sarcasm with a respected dev. Read, learn, and I hope you enjoy XDA, but remeber it is a developer forum, not a noob support site.
Regards.
Edit: ahhhh, just realized I kept typing Lior, and not Lloir, my apologies Dude.
