Galaxy nexus beat windows phone - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

World demands justice for Galaxy Nexus owner who 'beat' Windows Phone
I knew we had a fast phone and this proves it.

Huh?
Sent from the future.

Thread of the decade.

http://www.talkandroid.com/102027-galaxy-nexus-owner-beats-windows-phone-in-windows-phone-challenge/

I use both and eash OS has it's strengths and weaknesses. I actually prefer WP to Android except for my dirty little shame: Every Nexus I get turns into a portable torrent box. And since I don't have a computer this is my all in one. And they did a fantastic job with Android Chrome, I must admit.
But this pissing contest **** has got to stop.
Why can't people except that in some areas on different OS's will always be better. Some hardware specs will always be better. That's life. Personally? I root for a three horse race. Each OS, Android, iOS, and WP all pushing and pulling to stay ahead.
The end result? The consumer wins.

Bravo sir.. bravo

I am a Windows developer and I don't like metro stuff at all. Guess we are going to get stuck with it but I absolutely hat eto be forced into any UI...

I LOVE MY GNEX!

Does anyone actually by Windows Phones?
I think Microsoft really dropped the ball. They were one of the few in the mobile smartphone game with their windows mobile platform. It was a true multitasking device that was capable of doing almost anything.
Then the iPhone came out and basically did less then WM phones just made things prettier. Know instead of Microsoft stepping up their game with their age looking UI they just hung back for a while.
Then came Android, which almost feels like it would have been the natural succession for Microsoft except they just waited. So all of us WM phone users started to jump over to Android. Now we are so happy there, why would we want to even try a Windows phone.

So, how many Windows Shell replacements have you done? Because you're basically forced into the current Windows look.
I agree, I hate metro, too, but you've been 'forced into a UI' for a long time.

im going to try this, any tips to which rom to use?

Yep. At any given time I tend to have three or so and swap back and forth. Right now? Main EDC is a stock GN with a back up 4s. The 900 is my next and I'm considering a SGS3. If the SGS3 has TW puked onto it, that's out. I sell the 4s and move into the 5. If I find a Titan 2 cheap I may grab one to play with it. (Forgot to mention I'm still looking for a Finny.)
I love Mobiles.

I had an interesting 'battle' with a windows rep today. I beat her hands down loading a webpage. She wasn't very happy.
But she did beat me updating a Facebook status.

Going from android to windows 7

Hi everyone
I am thinking about picking up the 900 coming from a galaxy nexus. Now my problem is I am a heavy google user especially google voice. Does that work with win 7 and would I have a tough time transitioning to win 7 and the 900?
Thanks for any help

do not assume anything google will work. Just like nothing windows will work on android. Best bet is check with voice, they will know if it works or not.
I made the transition from android to winphone. I didn't made and didn't look for backs all the time, so transition was easy. Android does alot of good things. So does winphone. But they are different. It is a different experience. How well you like it will be up to you.

I think the resolution is only an issue if you plan on heavy usage of the phone such as watching movies etc... I don't "live" on my phone so its never been an issue. Considering the ability to view it nicely in sunlight and the RICH color experience compared to HTC and iPhone I don't think you will be disapointed.
From all the pictures I've seen of it, to me, the colors look dull. I just got the galaxy note and I am extremely happy with it. I was just thinking about picking up the 900 since the price is so good. Screen clarity is huge for me. A friend of mine had the original Samsung Focus and wp7 looked really good on that phone but I don't know about the Lumia 900. It might not be the phone for me.

One of the things to remember, the default setting for brightness is automatic. This dulls down the screen brightness alot, even on the samsung. I switch mine from automatic and set it to medium. Screen looks amazing....of the 900 devices I've got to play with, its screen looked fine.
the colors and the screen itself look fantastic, its just the resolution on the bigger screen. at least its not as big as the titans lol. qHD would have been perfect on this or at least the resolution of the n9. im either going to upgrade to this or the n9, kind of hard to pick. definitely getting rid of my amaze though

I compared the lumia to the focus and they are the same at the store where I pre-ordered. The colors on the amoleds look FAR superior to something like the Titan. In fact I passed on it because of that, the HTC colors were just white washed BADLY by comparison.
So I have had just about every android device worth having, I am currently using an iphone 4s, switched from the Galaxy Nexus to use it for a while, it is a nice device, but I just prefer android better.
I have never tried wp7, don't really care for the look of the OS, but I like the looks of the Nokia phone and I have been wanting to try it out. I am open minded to the idea, like I said I love android, I think ios is great too, just like android better.
I am really hoping to like wp7, I like to be able to switch back in forth to different operating systems.
That is what I am going to do. I will just switch back and forth between phones. Gotta love gsm.

The great thing about Google Voice on Android is that it's seamlessly baked in to the OS. Since that is not the case on WP7, you will need to use an app. I use Freetalk, which works well for me and can place calls using my GV phone number. For texting you need to do that using Freetalk's SMS app instead of the Microsoft SMS app. However your incoming text messages will show up in both places.
Windows Phone does have connectivity to your Google Contacts, Mail, and Calendar built in. During setup it will ask you for Google, Yahoo, Outlook/Exchange, Twitter, Hotmail, and / or Facebook accounts. It will then integrate all contacts, mail, and calendar items into your Windows Phone.
As for making the transition, it will take some work. Android and IOS work basically the same way so moving from one to the other isn't very hard. Windows Phone, on the other hand, interacts with the user differently. It also has a minimalist design which looks great, but does not give you a lot of clues as to how to do things.
I would suggest getting yourself a good WP7 book and save yourself the frustration of trying to figure things out on your own. Two good ones are:
Windows Phone 7 Companion by Matthew Miller
Windows Phone 7 Secrets by Paul Thurrott
Also Microsoft's online site for Windows Phone is quite good.

To be honest, if you don't like the look of the OS, you may not enjoy using the phone regardless of how nice the hardware is. Since you'll be using the OS all the time, you may cringe everytime you use it.
That being said, I didn't like the look of the OS of WP at first and then it grew on me and I really like it now.

i just got an iphone 4s, and i must say it's pretty dope, and once you jailbreak it, it's even better. I don't see why so many hate on the 4s, it's a well designed device with solid software. I haven't had any problems with getting through a full day on one charge, plus there's TONS of cases and other accessories for it. iOS5 really isn't bad like people been saying on here, i guess it varies from person to person. Yes i still have my Nexus, and don't plan on abandoning it any time soon. Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in on the iphone 4s since i just got it a few days ago(my first iphone ever) and loving it

I don't hate the 4s nor do I hate iOS. I used to have a 3g and a 4, and I still have a 1st-gen iPad. As phones and OSes go, they are a very good introduction to the world of gadgets/mobile computing/mobile technology. They're powerful yet easy to use and understand, which is the main strength of the iphone. Copying, syncing, backing up, etc., can be done with one click of a button. All the complicated stuff happens in the background and the user doesn't have to do much thinking.
However, all this requires iTunes, and, oh boy, do I hate iTunes. It gets even worse if you use Windows. ITunes on Mac is bearable. ITunes on windows is a PITA. Also, iTunes is great if you only have 1 computer and only ever plug into that computer. But if you have 2 laptops, a desktop and an office computer, then you're going to have decide which one will hold iTunes and your media collection. You can have itunes in all of them, but that would require that each computer should have a copy of your entire media collection.
Want to copy some photos from your PC to your phone?
iOS: email it to yourself or use itunes.
android: plug your usb cable, then drag and drop. Or use bluetooth.
Want to transfer 10 photos from one device to another?
iOS: send 10 emails to the other iOS device or download to PC, then multiple attach to an email (or sync with iTunes if that other person doesn't mind your iTunes wiping his device and/or he/she is your husband/wife and syncs on the same PC anyway).
android: multiple attach to an email, then send. Or, add to zip file, then bluetooth. Or, android beam (if hardware allows).
Want to copy a song downloaded/bought/ripped from your office computer?
iOS: Copy it to a usb drive, bring it home and sync with itunes.
android: plug your usb cable, then drag and drop. Or use bluetooth (but might might take a while depending on how many files)
Want to transfer pdfs, docs, spreadsheets, etc. to your phone for viewing on the go?
iOS: use itunes or email to yourself.
android: plug your cable, then drag and drop. Or use bluetooth.
Anyway, you get the picture. But if you like mobile gaming, iOS is currently the platform of choice. As for me, I'm the keyboard and mouse kind of gamer.
EDIT: I should point out that my experience of iTunes on windows was on a winXP desktop. Things may have changed over the past 2 years for iTunes for windows.
No change...iTunes still suxxxxxx ass

Windows Surface Phone.. would you?

If MSFT were to enter the WP8 game with Windows Surface Phone or MSFT Surface Phones range would you buy it?
Just a wild wild dream.. because:
a) The launch of surface range has created a buzz on even iForums and DroidForums.
b) The tech guys generally have liked it
c) It has met the hype
d) It looks sexy and we know it will perform much better than we think
e) Windows branding might be the reason for no traction, Surface branding seems to be taken positively
so.. could Windows Phone 8 be the Microsoft Surface Phones? or just Surface Phones?
PS: I love the Surfaces (will get one on the release day!) and whole heartedly hope the new new new iPad doesn't copy Surface and come up with the same and better pad.
Why do we know it will work better than we think?

Don't get me wrong... I'm thrilled about Surface
I would just prefer a Nokia... I like the aesthetics they design.
I'm definately tempted by the RT version of Surface especially if it gets priced correctly
There is one important difference between "Surface" Devices by Microsoft and "Nexus" Devices by Google. The Nexus devices have the benefit of being updated more regularly and earlier than competitors devices. It is highly unlikely that Microsoft will push update to their devices earlier. For Windows 8 it is a given that those will get Updates the same time everyone else does (second tuesday every month) and WinRT is likely to do it the same way.
And as Microsoft succeeded at least with Mango to push it worldwide around the same time I guess they would not stray from that path with new Windows Phones.
Given the partnership between Microsoft and Nokia I believe they will be relying on Nokia for their lead devices, given that Nokia has an All In Approach to the OS.
So I don't see it happening and if it were it would be a really good question why I would go with the Surface Phone instead of a Nokia (unless they build something that blows a PureView Nokia out of the water).
they gonna charge $600 and $800 for the thing... i think it is a way better deal than an iPad.

I am looking at Samsung Slate Series also. They had some quite "wow" device at the Windows 8 Release Preview Launch.
keynote
watch the keynote from 13:30 to 14:30.
either the hardware is underperforming or the software is still beta.
neat concept. too bad about the bootloader.
Its still Beta, even the consumer preview has some major quirks.
One big issue is gaming and swiping, swipe anywhere near the top of the screen and you'll bring up the multi tasking window, thus ruining your game.
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk 2
I am looking it in a way what Steve said "Harmony of software with hardware". Can Nokia really know better hardware for MSFT software than MSFT itself? They are only partners after all. Also, am I the only one who thinks Surface devices are going to stand out in the sea of Lumias? However, Nokia do come up with plenty of classy designs from time to time.

Of course, most everyone here is looking to hack or modify their phone in some way, and for that, Windows phones kinda suck.
I wanna try Windows phones again. The last one I had was an old HTC one. I'm worried that I won't like it though.
Stock ICS on my S3
One Word: Microsoft
GF Has samsung focus windows phone 7. I couldn't ever switch to it. But hopefully windows phone 8 will gain in popularity.
Good luck.

HTC One dual boot WP8?

So I didn't see it anywhere on here, but I read an article on my BlinkFeed the other day about Microsoft trying to get HTC to let users pick between android and WP8 or dual booting them on the One. What do you guys think? Not gonna happen? Really cool or really dumb?

Not going to happen on the one and its a stupid idea. 1) I can make my phone look like wp8 on android, cant do the opposite. 2) wp8 is inferior to android for many reasons, including theming limitations.

Well I still use a zune so I looked at windows phones for a bit, but my decision was made because, like you say, it's about as limited as the iJail

I like WP8, but would never use it everyday because of one thing... App ecosystem. Apple and Android have all the apps I use on a daily basis. WP isn't even close. So, until/if they can get that whole thing going, no thanks!
Also, yeah, as far as I know, the customization is non existent on WP. I'll stay with a jailbroken iPhone and my soon to be s-off'd One.

Uggggly. Why would anyone want to run W8... but that is just my opinion. It seems that Micro$oft has approached HTC about the possibility of running W8 on their Android phones. Lets hope that HTC, even in their cash strapped state, does not fall into the same temptation that Nokia did.

You won't get good comparisons about wp8 on here. They hate it as much as the iPhone. I ran the hd7 for about a year and really enjoyed it. It was nice to just use a phone without trying to change every design element just because I could. And zone with zone pass was a much nicer program to deal with than iTunes. You could drag media to your phone via your computer and it would transfer automatically when the phone was idle. I gave it up because it was late to the lte game. At this point I'm so far in with the Android ecosystem it would be tough to switch though the Nokia 1020 is sweet.

I started on WinMo 6.5 with the Dash, Dash 3G and Touch Pro 2 and was a fan. At the time, it was the only choice that included wireless sync (contacts, calendars without plugging in! whoa!) and tethering iirc.
I tried iOS briefly on iPod touches and hated it so got on the Android bandwagon early on. I like Android but it really only works for me if I am rooted and I can heavily customize the device and running something like CM or AOKP. Or at least heavily deSensed/deTouchWiz-ed. A year ago, I tried an HTC 8x and I was surprised that I preferred it to Android. Now, I am heading back to Android because the hardware is so much nicer on something like the HTC One. Heck, even the Samsung Galaxy S4 made me jealous (after I rooted it, lowered the DPI setting and had Xposed clean up the mess of a UI it ships with).
I would love it if my HTC One allowed me to run either Android or WP8 in a dual boot fashion. Knowing me, I'd switch back and forth, probably using WP8 while travelling because it seems to have better power management and Android when I need seemingly basic stuff that WP8 still doesn't support (high speed audio playback for example!!!). I doubt that it'll happen.
If HTC does make more WP devices it'll be because MS is making it a no-lose proposition (they can use the same basic devices and MS pays them a bunch to create variants and pays for the marketing of those variants) and without dual boot support which would just be too much of a nightmare to support officially.
Technically, I am sure it's feasible to do this, even with dual boot (just look at what the HD2 has been made to do -- a WinMo 6.5 device that runs Android, even 4.3, WP7/7.5 and with dual boot support) but it'd be bonkers to support unless they end up with a virtualized setup (probably with WP playing host to Android given MS's expertise with running hypervisors, see e.g. XBox One's virtualization features. Then again, why would MS build that?!).
I'd pay good money to get the flexibility to run either OS on something like the One. WP is a more refined, fluid experience than Android. But it just isn't as feature rich. I'd like the option of running either.
