IT'S OVER!!! Nokia Lumia 900 TV Commercial #1 - Nokia Lumia 900

1. It's over!!!

ENJOY!!!! They are pretty good.

The first one made me chuckle, we will see how nokia lives up to the hype

I get it, but...
Cute, I guess.
Seriously, though, they gotta do better than this! Doesn't say anything about the phone.

It'll be good to finally see them on TV as well as follow up commercials for my new hero phone.

I like the "death grip example" (mock scenario) they posted.
They need to show what the phone can do. Okay to poke a little fun between goliath companies, but consumers need to know what they are buying into. I bought one of the first "Windows Phone" back in 2010, and liked that it was different and I could swap batteries. Seems I can't with this model. I'll hold onto my Lumia 710 for a bit before jumping up to the 900.It has same features, just not the big screen.

Getting better. I'm ok if some of the commercials just give a sneak peak and some give a few more details like this one.

I think its actually pretty smart. A commercials job is to get people to think, ask and talk about a product. If it gets people in to a store to ask how it is different or to get more info etc... then it did its job.
In the US we LOVE to root for the underdog. eg.. "Firefox, take back the web.... "
We had a local restaurant thats gone statewide after their "Save the bird eat a xxxx" add campaign.
The only thing they could have done better in those commercials would have been to hook in to an underdog theme.

And now no tethering?

So, then, why would anyone buy this?
I can't tether. I can't automatically record all phone calls. I can't file explore.
Maybe Sharepoint, XBox live, and the Zune stuff that these Commercials highlight so well.

I like the ads. They're pretty good as an introduction to the platform.
Remember, most people have no clue that WP7 exists and is coming out soon. For us, this stuff is old news but you have to spoon feed consumers. If you jump straight to specific features and hardware, people will miss the point that this is a whole new platform. Once these sorts of basic ads are out and consumers are aware of the new Windows Phone's existence, you build on that and show off features and hardware.
I can already see an ad where the person is flipping through the interface, typing on the screen, and then in the last few seconds, flips out a physical keyboard and types something snarky.
Then some other ones showing off XBL gaming, Zune, etc. So much opportunity here for some pretty awesome ads. The more detailed ads will come in due time. They're just getting their feet wet. Google and Apple have a lot to be afraid of.
You make a good point, and I know this is the early stages as more will come. BUT, I have to be a jack ass and point out this great commercial.

I'd also like to point out how they're branding it. Notice... they're not saying "Windows Phone 7". I have been critical of the naming but I figured a while back that this is how they would brand it and I'm glad to see that they are. Noone cares about the number really. Many people will think it's 1.0. So instead of telling your buddy that you've got a "Windows Phone 7 phone" or something awkward like that the convention will just be to say "I've got a Windows Phone". If they actually know that WM6 existed (many people don't) they may ask "the old one or the new one" and you'd respond "windows phone 7". It's the same as someone saying "I've got an iPhone". They wouldn't say "I've got an iPhone4 phone". Or "I've got an Android 2.2 phone". It's just "Android" or more likely "I have a Droid". Man does Google have their branding all mixed up. I'm surprised this hasn't caused more of a problem than it seems to be. People just call every Android device a "Droid". Just imagine if Verizon didn't launch that ad campaign. Advertising matters, a lot.
Right again, WP7 the name has nothing to do with WM. Windows Phone is brand new, I forgot what the 7 actually means.
Most people I've seen with Androids don't know or just don't care what version they have.

Video chatting has been around for years. I felt like a douche doing it then. People looked like douches doing it then. And nothing has changed.
I'd love to stick with Microsoft products for mobile devices, but I have requirements since finding out what I can truly do with my Touch Pro 2. Imagine recording every single phone call in and out of this phone. Android doesn't even do that. It's been such a treat to have all that data.
So hopefully by the time I'm ready for a new device, WP7 will be ready to meet the standards.

tbh I don't think that Apple made it look more amazing than years ago, when Video calling was new.
I also haven't seen someone acctually using it more than, let's say once a year. It's really uncommon and not a point worth advertising. Even if WP7 doesn't support it (idk if it does), noones gonna miss it and point it out, except maybe Apple fanboys that think that "FaceTime" is totally awesome just because it's Apples idea

A lot of good Droid commercials don't show any real phone features either. Unless changing your arm into a robot arm is a feature of a droid, or having circular lines shoot out of your phone .
They just show cool futuristic themes and graphics.
But the commercials do show a "feature" of the phone. They're trying to build an angle for their marketing. The angle/feature being that they want to advertise that you can consume content faster on wp7 and you're not a slave to your phone...whether it's true is irrelevant, but that's the advertising campaign they're pursuing.
Robot arms were for the new keyboard. Lines shooting out of the phone was showing the wifi hotspot capability.

no it wasn't, there is no kb on the droid x...it was a vessel for that phone to come out of (I'm talking about the droid commercial they show in theatres). The commercial had nothing to do with droid other than it appearing at the end. It's just something futuristic and mysterious.
There are lots of droid commercials that don't sell a feature. They just sell the image of droid being advanced, being "scifi".
^oh, I haven't seen one at a theater. My bad.
The one that didn't make sense to me was the Stealth Fighters one. Airplanes dropping boxes on the ground, with Droids in them didn't make sense to me

I'm just saying, the point of a commercial is to introduce something memorable and to tie that recognition to a product. It's not an infomercial where you always sell features. It's a 30s effort to make something stick in someone's mind.
Take coca cola commercials...they don't always tell you how good it tastes. They have a lavish commercial and give you the impression that coke brightens your bad day.
Look at Geico...they have 25s of random nonsense with a gecko...then just say the line, "saved money on car insurance".
MS is going for a similar approach...they don't try to prove that wp7 "makes your day easier" they just say it does and try to imply that it is less of a hassle.

This is a very sad state of affairs tech industry is in. There are so many great technologies out there that disappear without a trace simply because companies can't present them properly to general public. You have to wait for Apple to take the idea, distort it by putting in a walled garden "ecosystem" and make a simple interface that an average Joe can get without getting scared by options, settings and multiple ways of achieving the results.
I can only pray that Apple TV doesn't take off to kill development of DLNA.

CES 2011 A Bust For Windows Phone 7?

I decided to share this commentary here from my WP7 fansite http://www.L337ware.com because I wanted to see how you all felt about the subject and honestly my site doesn't get alot of traffic being a homegrown effort.
"First off I have to admit I may be a victim of my own self imposed hype. Now that I got that out of the way I can’t help being a little bit dissapointed at the Windows Phone 7 news coming out of CES 2011. For example where is the promise of new blockbuster applications such as Pandora, Skype, Hulu, and many more key fixtures available of other platforms? How bout some cool new phones to compete with the flood of amazing Android powered hardware on the way? Maybe some new XBox live features like voice support? Instead we get the somewhat creepy rantings from the queen of the butterfly cult and a lackluster list of future game titles. I don’t really need it to justify my purchase but while Microsoft was all over Kinect sales numbers they seem to shy away from talking about the market performance of their now heavily discounted Windows Phones. Honestly most people are well aware of the features of the more immediate update but talking more about the plans for the later half of the year would have giving early adopters quite a bit of comfort. I’m a pretty avid fan of Microsoft and their products but even I can’t help feeling slightly underwhelmed. While I know Microsoft is in this for the long haul and have seen many times how quickly they can refocus a brand to please it’s users I have to say that CES 2011 is not really get me excited for Windows Phone 7."

sad but true they need to pick up the pace and satisfy us, their community and costumers. Both the iOS and Android, their competitors, are growing really fast, adding a lot more for our beloved WP7 to catch up with
heh
now that I've cooled down from the shock I can say that most of us put too much of expectation into yesterday announcement, and when it not satisfy our needs most of us (like me) felt like being cheated or thrown out
as for the new models, I just really don't think that it would make difference, since what we want is the change in software, not a 4.5" with Tigra and half-day battery to go along with it

Says who ??? Out of all the specs of ALL the WP7 phones, nothing is like WOW. Really, everything on every model has been done already by another maker or platform. I don't think anyone wants a 4.5" display, unless it's a tablet, it does not fit in the pocket too well. MS needs a show stopper, a really HOT WP7 phones, they don't have one. There is nice phones don't get me wrong but, no WOW phones.
I can honestly say CES had some Android phones that were faster and nicer displays, still not WOW but, a very strong Hmmmm. If they were WP7 models, I might get a happy about them.
Still dreaming for a Verizon WP7 phone...and not the Trophy
Agreed. Wp7 still doesn't have a superphone that can compete with you-know-iWho.
i am not sure what ppl were hoping from the CES and microsoft, WP7 was just launched in Oct 2010 and we are still waiting for the first update... adding on new things to the OS before the update will be not a wise thing to do...
come on guys this is CES not Mobile world Forum, and i hope some of you were not hoping for more hardware to be launched 3 months after the initial launch of the OS and 6 devices..
i was only hoping for the update date or week only... any way MS was tight liped with the WP7 and i think they will be tight liped for the update as well...

The indecision on the Skydrive stuff is beginning to p*ss me off.
Well I have to say, that it's probably better off to wait for the MWC in February for phone news, I will wait for that to see whether I should wait for some decent spec'd wp7 devices, or just jump on the android ship.
WP7 is impressive OS but there is no killer WP7 device on the market. Dell Venur pro is one worth buying but I don't like its portrait keyboard. I'll wait for Nokia WP7 phone later this year.

What do your Friends Think of Your WP7 Device?

What do your friends think of your device?
I told my friend what device I planned on getting for my upgrade, he had immediate disgust, being a Apple loyalist. He told me I was better off going to Android because its open, he doesn't have reason why open is good. When I finally got my HD7 in the mail he was there to see me unbox it. And it amazed him, which surprised me. Then I was playing with it around a few other friends and they loved it....Especially my girlfriend, she loved how easy it was yo navigate the OS compared to my last device, Cliq with Android.
when introducing my friends to phones, i try and be as neutral as possible. as a result, one of my friends is getting a htc 7 trophy this week.
in the end, those that know the name first think about the old windows mobile, and hence give that response. the best way to get them past that is to have yours at hand, unlock it, and let them play with it.
let the phone do the talking. then end of story.
Coming from WM 6.5
My experience has been similar. My friends and family are used to me with my FUZE and WM 6.5.5 custom ROM. I just hand them my Focus and let them try it, answer any questions, and they are off and running and don't want to give it back to me LOL. Android, Apple, WM users, doesn't matter. The UI grabs them, especially the ease of navigation. When they use the MSN Movies app and watch the trailers, they are blown away.
Same experience here. This girl i know saw me using my focus and asked if she could see it. I hand her the phone and she just fell in love with it. I show her all the different hubs and all she could say was "this is sick..when is verizon getting one" lol. Like JamesAllen said.....the UI really grabs them.
Experience
My most memorable experience was walking into a larger Radio Shack store in NJ and asking for a pouch for the Focus and pulling out the phone. The sales clerk was a girl about 20 years old who grabbed the phone from me, asked what it was (they only sell the LG WP7 phone and that was a model) and immediately began playing with it. She was very technical and moved through the tiles and apps with ease, logged into Marketplace etc. and forgot all about my pouch. It was funny to see a young, technical person latch onto the phone with amazement.

When you young people say something is "sick" does that mean it is unwell?
3 people have bought wp7 phones after seeing mine, everyone else who has seen it was impressed but at the wrong point in their contract to change phones, although they will now seriously consider wp7 when they renew.
I am such a fan of the WP7 OS that I make a point of telling everyone I know about it. Anyone who sees me use it is impressed. I don't know if I have facilitated any actual WP7 purchases but I have definately opened it up for possibility with people who probably would have remained Android or iPhone fanboys for the near future.
I even make a point of walking into T-Mobile stores to talk about WP7 and to give feedback to them. The reason is because I have asked reps what other people think about WP7 and they usually just say, "I haven't heard much about it." At least it'll plant he seed with the reps to talk up WP7. I feel like an infantry unit for MS haha.
I also get favorable responses when I show the phone. A few fell head over heels for it. The one comment I don't like and should scare Microsoft is the one where the person says, "This is a fantastic phone but...I got my iTunes and Ipod and want everything organized together." I know every platform has hooks to make it difficult for the user to leave. It can be from an electronic device to a bank. Just that Apple has big hooks.

iTunes is the hell on earth. That's why i sync my really old iPod only every 2 or 3 months.
First my friends where like"uhh that's just another Iphone clon (because they are used to everything that has a touchscreen is apple stuff)" then i would say "why is it a clon of apples iphone, tell me one thing that makes it a clon" and they can't answer. This just tells is how "stupid" some people are sometimes.
But as times go my friends are falling in love whit the smooth interface with live tiles, and actually one of my friends are going to buy one because of that.
This comes from a former Iphone and Ipad owner, noe on Omnia 7 and love it <3

An AT&T Short Story Experience

So, I went to my local AT&T to see if screen protectors were in yet for the Samsung Focus S and also asked if they had the Titan to which the rep replied "No and No." Now, keep in mind that the AT&T wp7 lineup was in the cut of the store hidden within a mass of other Androids. So, being the WP7 hype man I tend to be, I had to have a chat. Below is the convo:
"I really wish you all promoted your WP7 phones more BC they are amazing."
"Yeah, well I HATE the wp7 devices and couldn't wait to get rid of the focus I had," she replied.
"How could u hate it? I had the focus and it was a really great phone. I mean, you can't tell me the features it has aren't pretty freakin cool," I replied while clicking on my wife's tile to show her the immediate options it had.
"Yeah, I know what they do. I just didn't and don't like it. I feel like wp7 is just trying too hard to be like Android. I mean, it doesn't even have close to any of the popular apps that the Android has," she said
"Actually, they have a great selection of many of the most popular apps."
"You're serious? Come on, I mean, they don't even have the most popular app in the world, Angry Birds," she said followed by a smug-filled laugh.
"Uhhh, sorry to be the one to break this to you, but the windows phone got Angry Birds back in June"
"Well, it wasn't there when I had it. Either way, the windows phone will aways be playing catch-up to the iPhone and Android. That's just my opinion."
"It's cool to think whatever you want, but dont you think you should be a little less bias to a particular device when you are supposed to be selling/promoting multiple brands?"
"I'm not bias, sir. I tell every customer about all our phones."
"But, you didnt even know Angry Birds was on wp7, which has been available for almost 1/2 a year. If I were looking to buy my 1st smartphone and told you I liked the Samsung Focus S, but that I would only buy it if it had Angry Birds, you would have diverted me elsewhere based off inaccurate information."
"That's untrue"
"OK...thanks anyways"

Right now, the advertising budget, the blitz, I see it in Europe and very strong. But in America, it's dryer than...well a dry hump. It's rather bad
Though when you think of it, android had the same thing against iPhone, and in the end popularity won it favor.

Why don't you apply for a job at AT&T Wireless?
You can kill a few birds at the same time, and set an example here - then many of your fellow wp7 fans would follow...
Obviously, *****ing and moaning about it in the forums has little effect, the situation is as dire as it was exactly one year ago when wp7 hit the market.

Nice snipe pal, you really are a keyboard warrior.
One question though, are the droid forums really that boring that you have to come here to take pointless pot shots at others? i mean the guy was only trying to make a point about the marketing of a product.................. Mother would be proud.
This type of thing happens all the time, and will continue to until MS, or OEMs start marketing the phone properly. The more people see these commercials and ads the more they will ask in stores about the phones, forcing lazy reps like that one to actually do their homework. At this point, she barely ever has to answers questions about the phone so she has no need to do her job right.
XDA Developer members would make the best Sales reps
At this point, its more than a marketing problem.

I didn't realize I was *****ing and moaning. But, yeah, great idea. In fact, how about this, I'll drop out of medical school to join AT&T. And, then I'll work hard so that I'm promoted into corporate and then CEO, at which point I'll make sure that whatever new device you personally buy is discontinued just so you can continue to be as angry at the world as you already are at this present moment in your unfortunate existence.

And, folks, that's why Microsoft has had so mucn trouble selling their OS. Too many talented (insert sarcasm) wireless reps giving bad info

Thanks...this is almost the exact same experience I had. Funny that both were girls, because I thought that they'd appreciate the UI even more than most guys (of the six WP7 users that I've converted, 4 of them have been women).
Anyway, mine was over the summer, and she had the Focus and said "I can't wait to get rid of this thing." A particularly weird comment to make to me, a customer who had just walked in and asked to buy a Focus for my wife, no questions asked, because I loved mine so much.
She went on and on about how much Facebook sucked on the Focus, but couldn't even tell me if she was talking about the Facebook integration or the app itself.
I was getting too irritated, and was close to asking for another salesperson (the one who sold me my Focus wasn't there, but he was stoked about WP7 and was excited to buy the Surround for himself), so I didn't pursue questioning her further about why she hated her WP7 so much.
On a side note, my 18 year old stepsister is one of those people I converted, and she hated her WP7 at first too, because it didn't do all the things her friends were doing on Android—custom ringtones, swype, video MMS, etc. etc. Fast forward almost a year, and she absolutely LOVES her Focus and totally stunts it in front of her friends.

they should be airing that fan made wp7 commercial..
The thing was freaking brilliant
They've been marketing for a year straight, free xboxes, discounted phones, constant ads, tons of sponsorships. What more do you want?

I haven't seen a single commercial or ad.
It is amazing and sad at the same time how many ignorant mobile phone sales reps are out there in these stores.
Its almost as if its a plot to gradually wipe the phone out of existence but I don't think there's any stopping this phone.
I have said before, if you go to most carriers website, WP7 products have the highest ratings. We have hit over 1,000,000 likes on facebook, and with Nokia and Samsung getting on the action more, it MUST succeed!

As I said, there is more crying about the whole thing than actual actions - it's like MSFT turns back on all of their fans - announce $500 million budget on marketing at launch, and make it a no show.

As I said it's the same story as the last year.
You can call me whatever, but I find it pretty hypocritical to not accept outsiders, and not consider their opinion. If you want your platform to succeed you should change the attitude towards outsiders.
A personal revenge, i.e. I'll make sure that whatever new device you personally buy is discontinued just so you can continue to be as angry at the world as you already are at this present moment in your unfortunate existence., will not get your brownie points as a CEO.
In a way I like owning a phone that not everyone and their dog has...
Makes people more impressed when they actually see it, and I don't feel like a sheepie lol

Can someone real quick give me something to shut my iphone friend up!?

Yup we all needed to have "that" thread to make incompetent people sush
My friend keeps nagging me about her iphone 4s and that useless siri. Post pictures or short videos to show that we are superior! I just want to win for argument's sake

See the thing is, iphone users arent even that "technical" and her arguement would be like "so what, mine does more and still better"...lol
Screw Siri,
ask her what she does when her battery craps out? Or when she wants more ROM? Android is so far superior than that iCrap. We are not proprietary like iCrap!
Video, Video, we don't need no stinkin Video's......

ive always tried going technical and stuff but they just never understand! lmfao
Widgets... end of debate...
Swyped with my broken thumb
Ask what happens when your friend is trying to use siri in a room where so many people are talking loudly?
Not having to use iTunes was worth switching to android on its own.
I'm not going to lie to you...from a technology standpoint, Siri is pretty excellent. I do hope Google catches up in regard to setting reminders, calendar events and non-email notes via Voice.
On the other hand, who wants to pay an exorbitant cost on a dated framework, unreliable service and 100% liability device? Anybody...anybody...Bueller?
Didn't think so.
Plus the screen is just so gosh darn teeny. Feh..

All I see is an app drawer when I look at an iphone. I always said there's more to a phone than just apps. Yes widgets, extended batteries, expandable memory, hacking, launchers, keyboards, fonts, themes, live wallpapers, huge screen, not having to use iTunes, endless customizing. Only Borg type people are iphone users. Plus your supporting shady business practice.
The biggest turn off is the tiny screen. Ive also told people I couldnt deal with such a small screen.
Why do we have to argue/debate with people over this? My brother and his gf both have iPhone 4S's, I don't give a ****, that's their choice. I don't get the constant competing with users of cell phone OS's.
I usually don't but once in a while you'll get that smug ifan android basher that has no clue what their talking about. OP just wants a few talking points to shut them up.
Best ones:
IPhone is a smartphone for dumb people.
Tiny screen is unacceptable.
Slave to apples dictatorship on how your phone will look and operate.
Supporting a company that competes through litigation instead of innovation in a free market.
Overpriced handsets with sub par specs and quality. $750 for the 4s? Seriously? My ET4g has 48 gigs of memory.
Apple products are made with Samsung parts and at the same time trying to sue them and ban their products.

Thread is for fun, relax buddy xD. And i just need some counter arguments from a friend who attacked me first! haha
How about about some 100MPH tape over her smug mouth so you don't have to hear it? There is no talking reason with those lemmings who follow the pied piper. The music is all they hear. Agree to disagree.

I'm very relaxed, I just tend to ignore people that are immature enough to attack me over my choice in a cell phone. Just was merely trying to show that its a silly waste of time to debate people over this, when in the end their gonna make their own choices.... which is what I personally love the most about Android, choice.

I've used both platforms extensively and there are definitely strengths and weaknesses to them both. The arguments back and forth can be pretty funny especially on forums like Engadget. The statement that iPhone users are dumb though is one argument that I find ridiculous. Out of all my friends i am definitely the most tech literate. I flash roms, theme my phones, even write some applications. A lot of the people I know that use iPhones are doctors and lawyers, but don't have that much interest or the time for technology so simple is good. To think you are smarter than someone because you can switch out your launcher or overclock your phone is pretty stupid to begin with. Most of this is just effort. You are probably kidding, so not directed at you... this just always comes up in these "discussiond" especially when folks starting getting personal. Cheers.
