Personally I would cancel your order and get something from this company: http://adonit.net/product/jot-flip/
That's an accurate stylus that will go with you to other devices, (tablet, new phone, etc)

-----------

Your opinion
Hello guys, I have never used this kind of pen on any device. Is it good to take notes, for example, on Evernote during a training or reunion? Or is it better to just type with the fingers?

-----------

Does the pen from the GNote work?
I too would cancel the order purely because Expansys are not worth the hassle...worst reputation for customer service.

--------------

How does c pen work? This is bothering me for some time. Its not compatible with capacitive nor with note. screen is not registering anything touching the screen but the cpen & capacitive.

--------------

What is also bothersome is, why Samsung decided to put so many incompatible techs on it
MHL doesn't work nor s pen

Using phone to unlock doors?

I am wondering if it is possible to use my HTC One X to unlock a door. I have looked on instructables.com and seen some how to's using rfid and arduino but they all had a key fob to unlock the door and I want to minimize what I have to carry not increase it. Does the android phone send out a signal that could be used to unlock a door or does it only receive?

You need a special lock that is currently only for hotels
There is an ongoing discussion about getting the phone in emulation mode (so it can act as a card). When this is done it will be easy.
The locks are not exclusive to hotels, but are used mostly simply because its easy, cheaper, and gives them the ability to track if customers are in rooms or not.
A quick google found this code.google.com/p/nfcdoorlock/
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
My company is currently beta testing the use of NFC to unlock doors at several college campuses. Our test bed has been a group of students using iPhones with a special case containing the NFC chip. It looks very promising since a student is less likely to forget a cell phone than an id card.
Hmm. Well either the poster above me wrote that article I read over a year ago or relayed it. Yes you would need the lock to be able to interface with your nfc device.

you can with the lockitron door lock. works good, just don't let the batteries die in your lockitron.
the future is going to be so cool..
I like the idea
It sounds like a good idea, but it doesn't sound too secure to me. Somebody could hack their ID and get into any room.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I wouldn't do this if anything because I fear the one day I don't have my mobile on me, I'm done for. It's pretty hard to lose a key anyway, to me.
This lock can easily use RFID Tag
And is cheap and adpatable to any door.
Only problem, I don't find a way to use the phone NFC as a myfare card (which is the protocol of the lock)
you can find this lock on "bt security" french website.
Actually on kickstarter right now there's a project for basically very cheap Home automation and you can buy or make cheap addon devices. There using a mesh network interface from their base station and will be incorporating nfc by launch. The promo video of their product shows your phone alarm going off to wake you in the morning, then the blinds roll up and your coffee machine turns on. Just like issuing a Tasker command, except for the addon devices that for example your interface with the coffee machine is built into an outlet plug into the wall and your device interfaces directly with it via an arduino style product.

It's gonna take a lot of money, but there are some devices that you use at the door that can do it.

I t will be great when you can buy off the shelf NFC enabled door locks (with a mechanical backup of a key of course) along with car doors. IDK much about the tech yet as I don't live in a SUPER metro area but with good enough security It will be great to have more and more NFC devices. I would like to be able to buy a coffee from a dispenser just by flashing my phone. So although my phone has NFC I have yet to use it thous :crying:
I don't really think this should be as cost prohibitive as people make it seem. I was thinking of building a door lock that uses NFC powered by an arduino. It would require a custom app on the phone, but using encryption and one time passwords, I think it would relatively easy to create a secure door lock.
The biggest hold up with electronic door locks is the need for a fail-safe backup, usually a key. Keys are easily picked in mere seconds. Electronic locks that have key fail-safes only act as a convenience not a level of added security. I'm envisioning a lock without that problem, but I won't go into too much detail because I really want to build one myself.
Samsung already have such lock for sale:

Samsung has sold 30,000,000 SIII so far!

Samsung seems to be on a roll with their flagship Galaxy devices. Earlier today they announced that the Note II passed over the 3 million in sales. Now, according to a post on Facebook, plus a picture of proof, the Samsung Galaxy S III has surpassed 30 million in sales.

TBH, I love how I'm seeing more and more Android (looking at things, S3 seems to be much more dominant) in the public... I feel like we're having an actual individualization rising from the ashes... I mean, way back, the dumbphones had so much selections and features aren't all that important people choose to get the phone that expresses themselves...
Then the iPhone came... and all of that was lost, until they started making cases of different designs... Then, if you think about it... people want the same features, but all along people also want to express their individuality... And the rise of androids are bringing back the actual individuality we had back when we had dumbphones... We don't need cases to show off who we are, let our phones do the talking! haha
And still no jelly bean

Now they can use the revenue to develop the next galaxy device that will surpass that 30 million sales mark!
Hope they get rid of the physical/capacitive buttons and adopt the on screen buttons or develop something new.
I am actually quite a fan of how the S3 buttons are laid out. They are very intuitive in my opinion. Though it will undoubtedly be interesting to see where they go with it.

I like the fact we have capacitive buttons on our phones. Is it just me?
Maybe I'm the odd one out that doesn't like the physical/capacitive buttons.
The S3 is my first touchscreen smartphone and I found that without a case I would accidentally hit the back key with my palm.
The fact that on screen buttons are raised from the button of the phone and on the screen, it would prevent that situation from happening.
In addition you are able to customize the buttons to your preference and would have a sleeker appearance than having the big physical home button.
Had the nexus 4 been built differently, I would be all over that.
With so many s3 owners, Samsung really doesn't have an excuse to leave us in the dark with regards to updates.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
I agree on the update part. As for the buttons, i like the physical home button. The only thing i don't like about the phone is the slightly concave screen. Makes screen protector fitting very annoying.
I also agree on the individuality aspect. I think that's a major contributor in Android's surge in popularity over "other os's". And we have a standardized charging plug.

Maybe this is because I'm coming from the S2 family, but the physical home button is a no no for me.
Customization wise: the S3 does have a fair share of festive cases. Maybe not as many as iPhone, but I guarantee you'll find something. If you're not a case person we have something that not many other phones on the market can get - custom back covers. Besides in durability, we've got the iPhone pretty much beat!
Stock ICS on my S3
30 million is a lie! Samsung isn't cool enough to sell as many phones as Apple!

[Q] S PEN functions different on Sprint and Verizon?

Hello. I bought both a Sprint and Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Amoung the many differences is the S PEN. The Sprint one does not have tne non-touch of the stylus to perform funtions on the phone.
For example, I can swipe pages or select a function without ever touching the screen with Verizon' stylus. And both sylus' are compatible with ea h phone. Tne manuals are correct for version.
My question: Has any body else experieced this. Is there a way to tell which stylus model you have? Would buying one off from Samsung products page help? Thanks!
My guess is what you are experiencing as non-touch S-Pen activities are actually the result of a mis-calibrated S-Pen. The S-Pen can actually be calibrated by carefully removing the button and turning the potentiometer nearest the tip clockwise with a tiny screwdriver. ( Clockwise decreases sensitivity )
I did this myself, and it solved the problem of Air-View activating touch elements. My service is with Sprint, by the way.
Are you finding other differences?

There are no differences between the two. As mentioned in your other thread (Verizon GNII section), my roommate has the Verizon flavor and each stylus works the same with both of our phones.

I guess my point is...which is correct? Should you be able to use it without touching the screen like Verizon manual shows, or do you have to use the hover feature with the light beam like the Sprint manual tutorial shows? Each is different. Thdy both work as it is stated for each carrier. ThT is what got me to finally post to see if anyone else who might have both to do a side by side comparison. Thanks!

your Sprint one is correct the thing you are experiencing on the Verizon one is a bug that had also been reported (and fixed) on the Sprint version... although if you like it better there is nothing wrong with "uncalibrating" your Sprint stylus so that air view touches on your Sprint one too... it's more of a matter of personal preference

Finally an answer. Thank you! I will be trying the "uncalibrating" method as it is really cool. Have a great day.
I guess I am going to have to actually go into the Verizon and Sprint stores to look at their models as even after "calibrating" both, they still function the same. Like I said before, the Verizon S Pen not actually having to touch the screen is totally cool. If you want to swipe to a different page it does it in the air. If you want to select a function or App, you just "tap" it without touching the screen. It has no round circle indicator that shows up like the Sprint model. I can't believe that I am the only one to have this working like this.
I tried the hard tap calibrating and also where you take the actual button cover off and calibrate to try to make them the same but they both still do their thing. And both S Pens function the same way if I use them on either phone. Trust me, if you could get this to work you would love it. I just wish I could figure out how to get the Sprint S Pen to do the same as it seems like it is missing something after using the one from Verizon.
Solved thanks to XDA-member!

That's also the reason why you don't get the air view functionality on the Verizon because it always thinks it is touching the screen. Hope this helps.

Yea! You are totally right. I wasn't sure at first what you meant by the pinky thing, but once I put my pinky on the tip of the S Pen and tried to swipe or whatever, it works. Samsung challenge coming to a college near you!

Figured I would share this story with you guys.
So today I went to class and as I passed the breezeway that's located in the center of my university ( University of miami), I saw a Samsung kiosk being set up. After I got out of class I walked over and saw they were showing off the Galaxy s4 in the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.
Along with displaying these products they were doing a Samsung challenge, in which you could take out whatever smart phone you owned at the moment and challenge it against the Galaxy s4. If your phone was able to beat the Galaxy s4 in a random challenge you would win cash, electronics towards your non profit organization, gift cards to our universities bookstore and also a Galaxy Tab 2.
So of course there was a massive line of students stepping up to challenge the s4. I saw people pulling out Iphones, droid razr maxs, S3's, S2's, HTC ONE's and DNA's, oppo 5's,evo lte's ....and losing horribly lol.
The challenges included turning your phone on without touching it, send a picture to another persons phone ( representatives s4) the fastest, have two apps on the same screen at once, highlight an item on the screen without actually touching the screen, swipe through pictures without touching the screen and a couple other random challenges that the application on the s4 would randomly pick. The more challenges you won, the more prizes/ bigger the prizes you get. Almost everyone lost in the first round.
So of course I signed up for the challenge not telling them that I have a galaxy note 2 ( had to sign up on a tab 2 and specify what phone you had, so told them I had a note....lol see what I did ). Whenever you begin the challenge one of the representatives takes a picture with the new samsung camera ( also being displayed) of the Challenger and the s4.
As soon as it was my turn I took out my galaxy note 2, and every rep looked me and said "....f***!" . As you can guess I ended up winning the challenge 3 times ( turn phone on without touching, sbeam photo and airview with the stylus) so ended up winning a galaxy tab 2, flips covers, " next big thing " tshirts, cash, 15000 dollars in samsung electronics to my umiami non profit organizations and a ton of 10 dollar gift cards.
Thank you samsung for an unexpected awesome day. They are apparently visiting a bunch of colleges around the country for the release so check with your University to see if they will be near you!

plus I got a $5 GC to the student store and a free titanium flip cover for my note 2 after giving them my IMEI (just so you don't double dip I guess)

I initially wanted to try out all the challenges on my phone, but it was clearly rooted and themed. I liked the consolation prizes anyways. Even if you don't win, you still get a t shirt, speakers, flip cover, and lip balm. So I was happy either way.

What features are you going to miss, love or are concerned with when buying the Fold?

Without ever seeing the Fold in person and actually handling it I going to miss a few features based on the Specs I've read and videos I've watched. Here's my list.
Features I might miss:
1. Larger front facing screen...my caveat here is if the screen was larger it would probably be way too skinny anyway and would look really weird because of the dimensions..
2. Iris Scanner - love this feature on my N9. I know it's already gone on the S10's but it just works so well.
3. Update :MST for Samsung Pay is Probable for all phones. From what I've read, we're only getting NFC at least on AT&T but their website could be wrong since Samsung says it will have MST & AND NFC. That is always the beauty of Samsung Pay over various other Pay technologies. Worked just about everywhere for me.
4. MicroSD slot. OK, I might not use up the 512GB but do love the MicroSSD option which is great to easily move files and backups around., etc.
5. Waterproofing. I'm guessing that the Hinge is the problem and it would be difficult to waterproof the phone because of it.
6. The Fold would have been perfect if it had an S-Pen...with a selfie camera in the S-Pen (LOL!).
Features I'm not happy with (but I'll still live with):
1. That damn notch with a bezel on the big/inside screen. Almost made me bypass the pre-order. If that screen wasn't so large, I definitely would not have bought the phone. I swore I'd never buy a phone with a notch...Oh well.
2. (I know that this should probably be number one) The Crease! It remains to be seen but every video displays the crease in some manner. I find it funny that any article that I've read where Samsung has replied states that the crease is only seen in these **pre-production** models and the crease will not be seen on the final Fold versions. I'm not holding my breath on this one! So many reviewers stated that looking at the screen straight on and/or with a different wallpaper that the crease is barely visible or not visible at all. Now looking at the screen off to the side, the crease can be seen.
3. The batteries. They should have installed greater mAh capacity batteries. C'mon Samsung! You're using 2 separate batteries, give us more juice. You know we'll be on the 7.3" screen constantly!
4. I'm not really mad that they removed the headphone jack. I love options but 99% of the time I'm using BT headphones anyway.
5. The cameras. OK, we have LOTS of them! But for almost $2000.00 these cameras should have been even better than the S10/S10+'s cams. This Fold phone is Super Special and should have had a little bit more (can you say 10 X optical zoom? Might not have fit though).
6. I am still not fond of the Bixby functionality in comparison to Google Assistant. The Bixby routines are probably the best part of Bixby. I'll probably bypass Bixby.
7. Bixby button also being the fingerprint scanner. I'll lose my mind if I continually activate the Bixby button instead of unlocking my phone. That would make me crazy so I would use other software to disable Bixby altogether.
8. Many early articles on the Fold stated that Samsung would give us a free year of Samsung Premium Care+. I'm hoping that when I receive the Fold, I'll be surprised and find documentation to sign up for our free year. I'm probably dreaming...
9. They should have offered more for Trade-ins. Only up to $300.00 where it was $550.00 for the S10 possible trade-in values. (I'm kind of glad though since I may just need to keep my Note 9 around for awhile).
Unknowns:
1. It remains to be seen if the developers will build apps to work with continuity and sizing, etc. If that isn't done then we might own a $2000.00 boring paperweight. I need my Kustom suite of Apps and if they don't work, the Fold will be almost useless to me).
2. Will the Fold just be too long to easily fit in my pocket. I never put any phones in a back pocket but occasionally put in front pocket. Most of the time it's in a zippered pocket in a jacket or purse or backpack or small waist pack. I'm really not too worried..yet! Hahaha!
3. We definitely need a variety of cases. I'm sure they'll come. The interest in the Fold has seemingly surpassed Samsung's expectations. Samsung kept the final Fold design under wraps so long that I think that's one of the reasons the case makers haven't delivered yet (or they thought that the Fold wouldn't have much interest). I need a super protective Clear Case. I want to show off that Martian green with Gold Hinge!! (and I want to look at it too).
Final observations:
With all of the unknowns and possible negatives, don't get me wrong. I want the Fold!
I love being an early adopter and have saved up for this thing. I've been following Samsung over the years and drooling at all of their foldable prototypes.
With Samsung's track record on gorgeous displays, I know I'll love the tablet screen. I think that the small front screen is not a deal breaker because I liken it to my Lock/AOD screen where I glance at information then move on to the larger screen. It will be just one more step to fully open the Fold. Not inconvenient when you know what's coming! A huge, beautiful screen.
The COOL factor for the Fold is priceless! I am so anxious to get it and I know the feeling will continue as others spot the phone and want to check it out.
If the Fold ends up being a fantastic phone for me, then I'll be selling off a few other Tablets I have as well as my N9.
This is going to be Big! Cannot wait to play!

Based off of the limited amount of people that will buy and have this device probably not, but I could be wrong ?
I'll miss the spen even though I don't use it that often, but the main thing I'll miss about that functionality is being able to capture video as an animated gif (I don't know if this exists on the S series as I've only used Notes as far as Samsung's go). I'll probably use my old Wacom dumb capacitive stylus that's been sitting a drawer for a few years for the simple diagrams I draw in meetings using One note. It did the trick when I used to use an iPad all of the time.
The small screen might get irritating if I want to tap out a message as I already find it difficult using something as small as an iPhone SE. Although with keyboard customisation maybe bigger keys can make that easier.
The notch doesn't really bother me. A hole punch would be equally as distracting as a notch to me on a regular phone, but in a screen that big I can't see it being a problem.
I'm definitely changing the scaling and fitting more on that display. Apparently that's how you get many apps to use tablet mode rather than a big phone layout, so I'll be really happy if that's actually true. But I'd set my mind on getting one even before I heard about that so I won't mind if it doesn't work on everything.
I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode as it is on the larger Samsung tablets. That would be a killer app for me. I know we can use up to 3 apps, but it's not the same as having a few windows layered and tapping between them, especially if you're copying and pasting between a few documents and you want that bigger layout on each to see text placement properly. Maybe someone will manage to extract and develop an apk that doesn't require root for that.
With regards to the above, I used to have a Toshiba PDA that ran Windows Mobile and with it's 800x600 display you could change the screen scaling and achieve a similar effect. It was pretty great.
The thing I'm mainly looking forward to is reducing my travel kit from a phone, tablet, and kindle to just one device. Ok maybe not just one device, I'll have room for my Switch more often now. Airport security love giving my bags an extra search due to all of the gadgets I end up carrying, and hopefully this will mean I just sail through like most other people.
And while it may be an elitist prick move, I want people to notice it. Most friends and colleagues know I'm a tech geek, but nobody notices the tech anymore, as all of the phones and tablets look so similar. They don't realise it's something new or cool and don't ask. Plus, nowadays all it involves is showing off something a bit faster with more storage and a better camera. Nothing has done anything new for years now. This brings back that wow factor when new phones had something brand new and sparks conversation about the future again.
The US devices will have locked bootloaders just like the other US Samsung devices. Unless I've missed it there is no word on international devices yet. If you're like me and root is a necessity you might want to consider waiting until the situation is sorted out.
Edit... One other thing I ran into today in regards to a potential S-pen is that a reviewer was opining the screen was too soft to support writing. That was a stated opinion not a fact from Samsung. So a guess but not an unreasonable one; It isn't hard to imagine the screen not being able to hold up to a pen.

The specs on Samsung.com for the Fold only show NFC for Samsung Pay. They did the same thing on the Galaxy Watches.

Doubtful on AT&T or T-MO devices... You know it's always that locked bootloader thing in US phones.

I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode

Looks like we'll still be able to create a gif from a video (you could still have done it on the S9's too). Here's a tutorial for the S10's so I'm sure the Fold will be able to make one too:

Also, it is Dex ready/capable.
Great points you've made in your response! Thx!

It has MST, confirmed.

This would be great! I'm wondering if it's for Non US Folds. I'm hoping it's for everyone. I wish I had the eSim/nano sim option but not with my carrier (AT&T).
MST not listed in their specs but hopefully it's just incorrect. Thank you for the clarification.

I'm out of here. I'm a rooter and right now I'm now feeling the love with dropping 2k on this device and then killing the warranty. This isn't a complaint per se, it's just not the right tree to be sniffing around for those like me that will most def flog the thing. I do hope all who buy in enjoy the bejesus out of themselves. Good luck gents.

I was just reading AT&T version of the manual & no mention of MST, only NFC. THAT would be stupid to me & I'd really miss it.
