[Q] AT&T Development - Lack of ROMs and other questions. - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Just bought a North American Galaxy S3 with LTE and the AT&T section has basically nothing in terms of ROMs. The International forum has many, many more. Why is that?
Is there something developers are waiting for so they can start making ROMs?
Also, wouldn't it be smarter to rename the AT&T Development forum to "AT&T and Rogers Development"? It was quite confusing for me when I was first looking for the forum.
One last question. If I were to flash the kyanROM or the Ultimatun ROM, would it display "4G" instead of "LTE"? The stock Rogers ROM displays LTE. I just upgraded from the HTC One XL and they had the same setup, always the same as the AT&T model but all the ROMs had the 4G symbol instead of LTE.
Thanks for reading, and thank you in advanced for your answers.

I do believe its because alot of the dev's are waiting on their phones to arrive. The phone just got released by mail,(not in stores yet). So I think as they start to get their phones we will see more roms popping up. I am rooted but I have yet to flash a rom. I am still running stock.. I am waiting for a bigger selection.

yea you are going to have to wait i would say about 1/8 of the people who want the phone have one. I got lucky when getting mine.

So basically the developers are waiting for their phones to arrive so they can start work on building custom ROMs?
That makes sense, thanks for the reply. Can't wait until I can unleash the potential of this beast.

yes, you gotta think the international version has been out for a min. now, and didnt have to deal with nearly as many shortages due to supply and demand kinda of deal. Here we have shortages all across just about every carrier. Some people got their phones, others are waiting until their pre orders come, some are waiting until they are sold in stores, I give it a few more weeks, maybe even a month and we will all get our fix of ROMS, im definitely excited on how they will get them to work across the major carriers here.

The default behavior for the icons on AT&T is as follows:
E = Edge
3G = 3G area, should be almost nowhere in the states anyway
4G = HSPA+, or 3.5G or whatever you want to call it.
4Glte = LTE network
Of course any custom ROM can change those, and you'll need to make sure you have the proper APN settings for your carrier.
Hope that helps,

Excited for some custom ROMs to start showing up in the coming weeks! Running CM9 on my I9000 right how and can't stand touchwiz!

I'm not a touchwiz fan either, but when I use a 3rd party launcher (e.g. Nova Prime, Apex, Go Launcher) it removes most of the annoying things imho.

I am working on a rom myself, though it is more difficult since none of the windows based tools function well at all for ICS 4.0.4 TW based stuff. I could install a VM of Linux but I don't have the time for that right now. I will get around to it.

Don't worry you guys will get tons of ROM's soon. Same thing happened with the I777 .GS2, started really slow then they blew up.

Most people just started receiving there phones and working on custom roms. If you itching to flash try working on your own rom i did and its very unstable but I'm getting there. It require more time then i thought. We should be good on roms in a few weeks.

CDMA Desire

Is there any possible way to get a forum for the CDMA Desire? I just switched from Verizon to US Cellular and this its driving me insane. The Mesmerize has it's own forum and that's not as important as this. At least the Fascinate and Mesmerize are both CDMA. Please I'd even be willing to do the work to help make it. And before anybody here decides to say something stupid like just get a Mesmerize, if that's what I wanted I would have. Keep those comments to yourself. I had a Fascinate, I wanted to go back to HTC.

looks like you beat me to the thread. it would be nice to have a seperate forum for the cdma desire. its disappointing seeing all these threads for new roms that only work on the gsm desire. It's almost impossible to find a rom for the cdma desire. is CM6 the only thing out there? i switched from a nexus one to a desire only because i cant get 3G with the nexus one on the network here in alaska
I'm running a stock deodexed rom with A2SD. I'll post the link tomorrow. At work right now. There's not a lot but I hear CM is very stable on this. I might try it. Hopefully the mods notice this thread. It's hard for me, I had the Incredible, DX, and Fascinate so I'm used to everything being right there.

yeah man tell me about it. Now its like 98% percent of whats out there wont work with the bravoC. makes me want to go back to my N1 but im liking my 3G . id be happy with a non rooted sense 2.2 rom. one can only wish
I would LOVE to have a cdma Desire forum. For many ACG carriers the Desire is the flagship phone, really sad to see it not getting much love on XDA.
The following Roms are available for BravoC: They are all AOSP because there is no sense froyo rom to use as a base; personally I hate sense and much prefer AOSP.

i bought the TMobile one on day one so i was out of luck. I prefer not to be on ATT. I have cable, internet, wireless from the same company so i get a discount. plus with this company theres no cap on my wireless data usage or no bandwidth cap on my home internet, which is a plus
edit: just saw you're from anchorage, i have gci
if you have GCI you DO have a data cap on your cable modem. Those assholes got rid of unlimited traffic cable modems in august.

i've had unlimited since march 08 and it's still unlimited. i believe thats only for new customers, just like ATT did with their monthly cap. It doesn't affect you if you had it before, at least from what i was told from a buddy of mine using ATT
Bump. Come on people great device with lots of support so how about some CDMA love.

I am not being rude but, why not try sending a pm to one of the forum admins with this request? May be more productive than just talking about it
I agree with what has been said... the forum would be less cluttered and as a result, it would avoid a lot of confusion on this matter.

If there's a forum for each of the samsung galaxy S phones, those are the same phones just on different networks right? correct me if im wrong. That being the case, im sure there can be a BravoC forum. Everyday it feels like im looking at a forum for a phone i don't own. Which is half true.

Was it a bad idea to get US version?/Also T-Mobile?

I keep seeing all these Roms pop up for the i9300 International version.. and now they are ALREADY starting work on Jelly bean for it...
And yet we (US versions) (especially T-Mobile) don't really have anything.. i'm kind of regretting going US- Anyone else feeling the same?
it would be nice if we could use the same Roms as the international versions.
i'm a past Galaxy note user, and i might go back to that for the time being because the Rom i had for that "Stratosphere" was freaking AMAZING...
(Sorry realize I should have posted this in general )
Banned!!! Lol jk. No development is going to explode soon. Devs are just figuring out how to make devices carrier compatible and they are also just getting the devices. Alot of carriers have limited supply of the phone.

Yes you're right, this should be moved to the general section. The main problem with the international version for t mobile is you'll only get edge network speeds. You are right though typically the international versions get more Rom attention at the local versions do. I need my 4G so I'm happy with the t mobile version version

chill... this phone will have everything the international one has and more. keep in mind, its only been out since the 21st, supply was limited. nothing we can do about that. we have some great things to come especially since the different carriers all have pretty much the same hardware so there will be A LOT of roms. this phone will be epic. so sit down and shut up and watch the show!

I would agree that it should have as much development but the international one will more than likely get quicker updates. So all in all I wouldn't really say its gonna have more. Both phones have their pluses and minuses. Even though all the US variants share common hardware combined they are still aimed at a smaller target market than the International model. Less people owning it = less development usually. I'm on T-Mobile myself but would rather have edge and the Int model than 4G and the s4 processor. Either way you win with this phone, its amazing in any variation.

I don't see how anyone could want an international version on edge speeds with t-mobile over the U.S. dual-core with 4g speeds lol. I mean it's cool to tell people that your phone is quad-core, but c'mon. And I get as much satisfaction telling people my phone has 2gb's of RAM lol
And obviously it's early but development is going to be crazy on this phone. Dev's push other Dev's to work harder so it's almost like exponential growth when it really gets going (look at the Galaxy Nexus forums). Plus as it looks like the Galaxy Nexus has been banned in the U.S. you can bet we'll get even more dev's jumping on here
Thats what im saying .... Like people that use iphones on TMobile or Simple Mobile and they still paying for 4G data .... SMh....

T-Mobile is refarming their 1900mhz spectrum for 3/4G data so some people can already use the Int version on T-Mobile 3/4G. The want for a quad core phone isn't for **** sizing contest as you suggest here at least not for me. A perfectly fluid UI and gaming/browser performance are my main motivations. I live in MN and barely get anything above edge on my galaxy nexus anyway so having only edge really doesn't affect me, that's what WiFi is for. If I used my mobile plan for my data needs I'd get throttled in a day. My mother had a HTC one s with the s4 processor while speedy it still couldn't keep up with an qHD resolution. Again I think both devices are top notch and both have advantages over one another so I think I boils down to preference.

You gotta remember the international version has been out for a month, the TMO source code only released a few days ago, and the stock ROM like 2 days ago. International development has had a month headstart on us. We'll catch up. Not regretting my purchase at all. We'll be fine.
Heck no bro tmobile sgs2 has some of the best developers I've ever seen mainly roman, whitehawk and tdj. Tdj is amazing and I'm sure someone will get him a s3 in due time. If you want 4g then you gotta stick with us carriers, int does not have right radio for tmobile and no lte.
Tmobile is the only 4g in my area and it rocks. No idea when lte is ever going to come so its tm for me.

[Q] Any Help on Straight Talk SGH-S959G

I recently brought the Galaxy S2 from Straight Talk. And, I thought that it was on ICS already. But, its still running GB. I've been flashing, and testing roms on the sly for a while for my previous phones. HTC Droid Eris, HTC Evo 4G Design, Motorola Defy. And, I know there are different models of certain phones. I hadn't realized until I purchased the phone, and looked at the model number that it was different from the mainstream S2 models. I figured that it wouldn't be a factor since in my mind. Just about all S2 no matter the model number are the same. I was wrong.
In my search for anything about this model. I have came to many consumers who brought this phone that was looking for custom roms. That there aren't any custom roms for it, or CWM Recovery. And, we're stuck with this great phone, and crap stock. I know myself, and many people who own this phone either is just sticking with stock, or on the hunt.
So as the topic of this forum thread indicates. Is any devs going to port over CWM or some Roms for this model? If there is can anyone steer me to it.
After all the reading, poking, prodding (and praying) that I've done, I don't think it's going to happen and if it does, not any time soon. There's no incentive. Straight Talk isn't going to sell many of these phones - it's expensive, which means it's not targeted toward the people who use their service the most - and with the incredibly small install base, there's just no reason for anybody to spend the time and the effort preparing a stock ROM.
There's no stock firmware for ANY Straight Talk device as far as I can tell. SamMobile has stock firmware for every Samsung device EXCEPT for Straight Talk/TracFone's devices.
I'm still holding out hope because like you I think it's retarded that this device shipped with Gingerbread when the physically identical AT&T model shipped with Ice Cream Sandwich.
Att galaxy s2 shipped with gb as well. Maybe now they are updated.

I've read that Samsung and Straight Talk don't plan on updating this phone to ICS or JB. Its one of those as is phones. Which sucks because it can do so much better than what Straight Talk is allowing it to do. This model doesn't even sync with Kies. Straight Talk locked this phone DOWN majorly. And, that sucks cause Boost Mobile has a version too, and it has custom ROMs out for it, and everything.

Google Edition, i9505, and Tmo-Variant Question.

Hello fellas. I have a question.
Gave away My n4 to my girl and got a free S4 from T-mobile about a day or two ago.. Yay. Rooted and flashed CM 10.2 and loving the phone but i do have a question;
Now i know Google sells the GE Edition S4 But i don't see a difference in our version and theirs besides obviously running Stock and has easy root. But once our device is rooted, essentially don't we have a GE S4? I mean running the GE Roms should be pretty easy since its the same device? Also, i've been reading around and noticed that alot of people from our forum have been flashing roms meant for the unlocked (i9505) S4. We can run any rom from that forum? i know our devices are different processor wise (exynos) but can we just flash their roms willy nilly, and change the APNs to run our LTE and we are good to go? Excited to essentially know that i can Run 4.4 kitkat when it arrives in a few months if this is the case. Got jealous when i saw a glimpse of the N5 and 4.4

There are quite a few threads here both asking and explaining that yes, we can flawlessly run ROMs for other variants. Meaning yes; if you want to run a ROM from the i9505 section, go right ahead. If you like the way an AT&T ROM looks, flash it. When you mention the Exynos CPU, please note that the Exynos is the i9500 and flashing any ROM from that section will brick. i9505 = safe. i9500 = NO NO. The best thing to remember when flashing other variant's ROMs is to use a kernel for your device. Don't worry if you forget to flash your kernel, you're not gonna do any damage, you just won't be able to boot; just wipe, re-flash, and remember your kernel this time.
And before the question gets asked, no you can't do a full GPe conversion. You CAN use the CWM-flashable ROMs, but as far as totally converting, using the pit, GPe stock recovery, and receiving OTA updates... the answer is no.
Not trying to sound like a douche nozzle here, so if I came off that way, I apologize. It's just that this info has already been covered in depth.

Not trying to sound like a douche nozzle here, so if I came off that way, I apologize. It's just that this info has already been covered in depth.

MAN tell me about it. So how are you liking your S4? I love this thing so far. Just need to find a case on amazon, was honestly looking for maybe a bumper case but I haven't found one yet. Boy I can't wait for that Samsung galaxy gear watch to come out, would be perfect with this phone. Hopefully I won't have to go back to touchwiz though :victory:. Impatiently waiting for kitkat and the reveal of the N5, which if is in the same price point of the n4, I will be getting as well.

Thanks to the OP and others who have responded. After playing with my sister's S4 a few days ago, I've been debating ditching my Nexus 4 and going the CM/GPe S4 route.

I would wait, with the unveil of Kitkat and the N5 relatively soon, that may blow this phone out the water.

The truth? It's only my 2nd Android phone, so I can't really speak from very much Android experience, but so far it's a beast. I got an Otterbox Defender the day I got the phone and it's spent maybe 10 minutes out of the case... it adds a little more bulk, but I also cracked my old phone's screen twice while going caseless; I can live with a little more bulk.
On TouchWiz; it's really astounded me. My previous phone, I used everything BUT stock; something about the S4 though, I can't stay away from TouchWiz. The same can be said for the other ROMs as well though. My ROM folder on my SD card is over 10GB and I constantly swap between them.

Cant a Dev Mod a Kitkat Port to Allow Wifi Calling?

Many S3 users are complaining that tmobile hasnt released kitkat for the S3 while all the other carriers have. I'm one of those complainers. But why cant a dev just take a Sprint kitkat rom and mod it to allow wifi calling for the tmobile S3? Shouldnt that be easy to do?
If it was easy it would've been done already

no, WiFi calling has NEVER been ported. So the only ROMs that will have WiFi calling on them are ROMs based on a T-Mobile OS that included WiFi calling. Since every KK ROM on TMO is a port, the OS it NEEDS to be based on technically doesn't exist.

there is already a bounty for a port in the thousands... to give you an idea of the simplicity

Hi 52brandon. Thanks for letting me kbow. By chance, have you heard of StockMOD Rom? It includes wifi calling but is based on 4.3. If youve heard of it what do you think of it?

I have not. I don't have TMO (yet. Got grandfathered data on VZW which is nice. But TMO is cheaper, has perfect coverage in my area, and 3x LTE speeds. So probably gonna switch and sell my grandfathered plan AoL. First gonna try to get my number. I heard there's a way to do it with Google Voice, but that's a different topic. I just follow the VoIP developments to see how it goes. IMO every carrier should offer it. I'd love to see some ROM team geniuses get it figured out

Yeah I agree. This is the reason why I'm thinking of getting a Note 3 and selling my S3. Its just weird that tmobile wont release kitkat for the S3. Good luck with selling that grandpa plan. I know how its like being grandfathered into a plan. I was there too.
Just so you guys know, other carriers may soon get the hint and follow T-Mobiles lead on wifi calling. Sprint apparently is just now beginning to introduce it on their networks. From what I hear, its very restricted though, and is nowhere near as good as T-Mobile, but its a start!
Don't hold your breath for finding a way to port it into non Tmobile roms though. The work involved in modding many different parts of the o/s is probably much greater than anyone realizes, and without the full source code is next to impossible. It would require modding of system apps, frameworks, libs, drivers and modules, as well as the base firmware itself, most notably, the modem.

Really? Its good to hear that Sprint is including wifi calling. But I feel that the S3 wont get it in future releases based on what I read that kitkat is the last Android version for it. If by chance its included in a future release, it'll be months before it comes out. By then I'd have sold my S3.
Regarding the hard work that goes into modding a rom, I'm glad you explained it in detail. That opens up my eyes about how hard it is for a dev to invest his time and energy in modding a rom just right. I didnt know before how difficult it was. Many times we end users take devs for granted not knowing the sheer sacrifice you guys make to make us all happy. We look at you guys as wizards instead of human beings and expect you to give us what we want at the drop of a hat as if by magic, not appreciating your hard labor. For that I thank you Doc. Talk to you again.
Glad I could help!
Unless im mistaken, Sprint will be introducing their wifi calling with the S5/Note4. Not sure if the S4 will see it, bit you're right about kk being the last update for the S3.
As I understand it, they've still got a ways to go to make it as good as T-Mobiles offering, but it'll be better than not having it all!
