3g/4g Drop calls - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I have had my nexus for about 2 or 3 weeks, bought it from Google Play unlocked gsm for tmobile. When I am on the phone it will randomly switch from 4g to 3g and then proceeds to drop my call. Does anyone know a fix? Thanks
Also I am stock rooted on 4.1.1 and my baseband is UGLC1

Try a new radio..

I have tried all the radios listed in this thread and still I have the same problem with all of them.

Bump. Any help guys?

I have the Verizon and have been having the same exact problem. The signal will randomly fully cut out on my phone for a short period of time and it's ridiculously obnoxious. Does no one else have this problem?

I contacted samsung and they don't want to replace my phone.. this really aggravates me!

Have you tried calling Google Nexus support directly? Since you just bought it, they should be able to help. When I had an issue with my phone, I called Google and they transferred me to Samsung for a warranty claim. Samsung reps did not speak English very well and basically told me to call Google back to troubleshoot. I called Google back and explained to them what Samsung said and the Google rep was adamant Samsung would have to honor my warranty. He offered to 3-way call with Samsung and explain to them the issue and why they should do a warranty claim for me. In the end, Samsung ended up agreeing to fix my phone, but I had to send it out to their Texas factory, which took about 4 weeks total to get it back. So, I would try calling Google and see what they have to say and maybe they can help talk to Samsung about repairing your Nexus.

Yes I contacted Google and they said the same thing.. I can't send this phone in because I don't have another phone I can use.. I put a new sim card in my phone, I'll post whether it works or not soon.

It's a device issue. I have the verizon one and it was suffering the same problem I had to send it to get another one and now its working phone with no data drops(knock on wood)

Still having data problems. No 3g/4g!!

This is really becoming frustrating. I switched to Verizon a week ago and had 3g/4g service for a couple days and now NOTHING. I called support (12/23/11) and after an hour on the phone, visited the store. Then after 2 hours at the store where they switched over the SIM card, gave me a brand new phone, and still having problems with the phone. So I had to open a trouble ticket to look in to my problems with my data connection on my Galaxy Nexus. According to the store, support said I am the first to call about the problem.
Store rep was on a 4g HTC phone...his data was fine. My mom is on a LG 3g phone, her data is fine. All in the same areas of town as well. Why isnt mine? Tried CDMA only and nothing as well. For about 10 minutes, I had a 1x data connection that was slow but it worked. No nothing, again.
If I got a new phone, new SIM....then the problem is with Verizon somewhere and needs to be fixed. I am paying money for something I do not have and its a waste. I understand there will be problems from time to time, but don't release comments saying the problems are fixed when there are clearly still issues.
Anyone else still experiencing data issues specifically with the Galaxy Nexus?

Was a nationwide outtage Verizon said was resolved a couple days ago. Was working fine on Monday/Tuesday. This isnt related to the fix to resolve the reception problems. I can text and make calls just fine.
Try disabing vzw backup amd google +. Stopped my phone from doing exactly what you describe.
I've been having the issue where the hand-off from wireless to 3g tends to cause me to have no data connection at all (wifi shows up, but can't 'do' anything like browse to a website and such, and 3g never makes a 'connection', but I know I'm in an area where I should have plenty). A simple restart of the phone fixed the problem, but in the long term, I shouldn't need to do this in order to get a data connection. Just my experience.

I had the exact same problems. I returned it & reactivated my Thunderbolt. I hope Verizon actually fixes the radio instead of just changing the number of bars that get displayed. My lack of faith in this is why I returned it before my 14 days ended. I hope they will actually fix it & I'l try again in a few weeks. You might consider the same strategy.
Also, I had bad data & signal before Google+ was even on my phone.

Everyone isn't having problems. Verizon's fix is just going to change how the bars are shown.
If you are having this many problems, just exchange the device until you get a new one.

I kinda doubt they are going to keep swapping out my phone over and over again until I find a working one. My original phone worked fine fora few days and probably is still messed up from the recent nation wide outages they had. They were hesitant on replacing my phone the first time.
Going to call support in a little while and follow up on my trouble ticket I logged yesterday. They better have a solution for me.
You paid $XXX for this device and you're afraid they aren't going to give you a new one because this one is defective? This issue may seem widespread because of all the complaints on this forum, but trust me, not everyone is having issues. Check my other thread.
Verizon already came out and said there isn't a performance issue with the device and their patch is just going to change the bars. So it's now or never.

Are people having slower 3G speeds on their CDMA devices? This is my issue as well. My sister's iPhone is consistently getting 1mbps> whereas I'm only getting ~100kbps down. Upload is worse at 47kbps.

I already got one new phone replacement yesterday. Going to call support yet again here in an hour or so and see if they have an update on my trouble ticket. But I would think it if was a defect in the phone, that this issue would be well known by now and posted everywhere on the internet. I understand what you are saying....just hope they get it fixed.
I'm having this problem too. I'll be on wifi at home, both wifi and cell bars will be blue. Everything is dandy. Then when I leave and turn off wifi the 3G icon appears and I have a few bars, but they are grey and websites don't work. I thought blue/grey just meant you are/are not logged in to google services, not whether or not you have data connected in general. A restart solves the problem, but it shouldn't come to that. This was a problem before the outage as when they were setting up the phone on release day in the store it took awhile to connect to 3G. Is this also why when I switch in to airplane mode I can't come out of it without a restart?

Can't send or receive texts with new SIM?

Hey all,
I broke my old iPhone 4, accidentally sold it with my old SIM, bought a 4S, took it back, and yesterday got a new SIM card for my new Galaxy Nexus. Everything worked fine after I activated the SIM over the phone, but I noticed I didn't get any texts.
I didn't think much of it, just other people having busy lives. The next day though, I didn't get anything back from my mother, which she surely would have text back by now. I gave her a call, and she told me that she never got anything from me, and I never received anything from her.
Investigating further, most people online said it was that I never assigned my phone an SMSC number. I put in the AT&T one and still no dice. I called AT&T, they re-added messaging, and still nothing. AT&T contacted Samsung, told me to do the SMSC change again and see nothing. I was able to get all the trial texts from AT&T, but couldn't send or receive anything from my friends or family.
Frustrated, I went down to Best Buy and bought an AT&T dumbphone to use so I could send back the Nexus, as well as finally be able to text. Still couldn't send or receive messages. Changed the SMSC on both the phone and SIM card, and got no errors, but texts still never got the recipient and I couldn't receive any.
Needless to say, I'm extremely frustrated. Anyone have any advise?

I agree. I went to the AT&T store today, and they opened a claim and said they'll have a solution by Tuesday, but I have a feeling that they'll come up blank.
I'm hoping maybe it's as simple as getting a new SIM, getting it going on an ATT phone, and then popping it into my Nexus.
Turns out it was account related, so I got it working on my dumb phone. Stuck the SIM into my Nexus and still nothing.
Never had any sort of trouble with iOS with this, or dumb phones. Maybe the Lumia is more my speed.

Issue with 4.0.4 or phone?

I just got a refurb replacement for my GN from Verizon because my first GN had no recovery image on it which prevented me from doing factory resets and doing the 4.0.4 update. I just got the new one in the mail and after setting it up and installing 4.0.4 there are terrible data connection issues. If I have 4G turned on and begin using the internet in anyway, browser, facebook, etc.. it only hold the connection for 30 seconds max and it loses all network entirely preventing me from using the web or making calls until it reestablishes connection which takes like 30 seconds. Now when i'm not using 4G and just on standard network, I can make calls and send txts without a problem and it holds the connection just fine. Is there a fix to this issue? Is it a faulty device or is this a known issue for 4.0.4? Im going to go back to VZW for another replacement unless I get an answer here. Rooting is not an option because I want to keep my warranty because there are so many damn issues with this phone. Thanks

gfropr, did VZW actually tell you the SGSIII was an option? I finally went in and they told me I could swap mine out for either the Bionic or the Razr and I asked about the SIII and they really weren't sure if it was an option because it's not out yet. I'm going to be very mad if they make me swap for anything Motorola and I'm for sure not going to get the iPhone.

My signal suddenly disconnected????

OK, so I was gonna go to this place, and then I realized that my GNex had no signal! No whatsoever. It did spike up to full for like 30 seconds and got no signal again... Why does it do that? I did drop my phone before I noticed it, but when I dropped it, it still had full service, so I don't think that's it. I also flashed from yakjuux to takju (including radio and bootloader) but I did that few days ago and had no problem until today.
Since, it is still disconnected, I went to settings-mobile networks-available networks and then clicked Koodo (My carrier), then the message popped up saying "Cannot connect to this network right now. Please try again later." and now, I have this notification saying "Selected network (Koodo) is unavailable"
Does this mean that my carrier's sevice is off right now? Or does this mean that my phone is broken? Or does this mean that my SIM card is broken? I need answer ASAP!

The same thing happened to me yesterday around 17:30. I have a GSM Galaxy Nexus. I'm on T-Mobile's monthly 4g prepaid plan, so I thought the coverage was just spotty. When I got home the next day I noticed it was still like it. I called T-mobile to ask if there was a service disruption, and the rep informed me that there was not, but to bring it in. Indeed the rep himself was using a GSM Galaxy Nexus, and he had 4 bars. He even changed my sim and it still wouldn't pick up a signal. It's either the 4.1 update, which he had also, or we have bad radios.

Should use another phone to call your carrier and see whatsup.
How have you modified your phone? If you're stock, then its not your software. There's nothing in the 4.1 update or any of that that's known to be a bug with network connections.
Also, have you tried completely doing a factory reset and/or some airplane mode toggles or reboots?

Highly doubt that a radio flash can fix this. Sounds like a tower/network issue or something you changed in your phone's settings. Sporadic network outages DO happen.

I can guarantee you that it's not tower problem cuz my dad's Nexus S handles Koodo SIM just fine. If you are saying the truth... I am officially screwed since I got no receipt for the GNEX. I did email the seller of this GNEX if he can help me, but he didn't reply yet. Of course, that was few minutes ago and he probably didn't even check his email. I didn't change anything that can disrupt my cell connection. Also I am running stock and I did factory reset and the problem still occurs... Do you think this is because I dropped my phone?

Very likely could be the issue. Surely the seller isn't going to help you out if you dropped your phone... I'd make sure all of the pins in the SIM tray are working etc and its not damaged. That's easy to see at least.
Unless you can confirm your SIM is working fine in another phone, I'd still call to see if that SIM's account is all in order and active.

Just look at the tray and see if the pins are damaged or bent.
If somethings "broken", its likely something broken internal from when you dropped it.
Did you take the SIM out and use it in another phone to confirm 100% that your account/SIM is working properly? This is just part of troubleshooting... super easy and quick way to eliminate one potential problem.

Depends on the damage. It might be easy as bending some prongs, might be as much work as replacing the SIM tray. Unless it dropped at a really weird angle though, I doubt the SIM tray got damaged... the reason I recommend it is its the easiest thing to check without disassembling the phone. Everything else inside is much much harder to diagnose.
Like I've said over and over, if you've done a factory reset (and are on stock firmware) / reboots and the problem persists, its not a firmware/software issue. Also, if your SIM works fine, then likely you severely damaged something inside the device when you dropped it.

Like I've said over and over, if you've done a factory reset (and are on stock firmware) / reboots and the problem persists, its not a firmware/software issue. Also, if your SIM works fine, then likely you severely damaged something inside the device when you dropped it.

OK thanks in advance... I'll make sure to check that out as soon as I can. One last question... Do you know any place near Niagara Falls (Canada) that does phone repairs? I know this is a weird question, but just in case you know somewhere and just in case I need a backup plan...

Dammit.... I heard that fixing hardware related stuff is very expensive... Hopefully it's only some part of the phone that you can replace that is damaged, not something that I need to replace motherboard for... Thank you so much for your efforts... I guess if it's not sim tray problem, I am officially screwed and probably have to put down over 100bucks...

[Q] 4G LTE Issue (Described inside)

Hello everyone,
I have a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 and have been through hell the past month trying to get my phone working again. I have posted a detail of what I have been going through on the Sprint forums, which you can find by googling 4G LTE Antenna Issues on Galaxy S3, but will go ahead and give a quick summary.
Towards the end of May, my phone became extremely hot and I had to send the phone in to Samsung. They replaced the PBA board and sent the phone back to me. Upon receiving the phone, I noticed that i was not getting 4G LTE anymore (I compared it with the other phones on my account, along with going to places which I know I received great LTE coverage). I sent the phone in to Samsung again. Upon receiving it, I noticed that I still did not have LTE. After going back and forth with Sprint and Samsung, I sent the phone in to Samsung again for a third time. The phone came back 2 days ago, and what do you know, no LTE. The one change I did notice is that Samsung updated the ICCID to run on 4G (per their description from the repair tracking website). The ICCID is the one number that is different from when I originally got the phone (DEX, HEX and IMEI are the same). After talking to both companies again yesterday, I was pretty much told by each company that it was the other companies responsibility for the LTE to be working. Sprint did try to reprogram and had me do an activation using SCRTN, while Samsung says that as long as I receive 3G then the 4G LTE issue is on the carrier's end.
As you can imagine, i am extremely frustrated. I have navigated these message boards along with others looking for solutions, but have been unable to come across any. I have not rooted my phone, but do consider myself pretty knowledgable with the phone.
If anyone can give me any advice on what to do, I would greatly appreciate it. It is important to add that I do not have insurance, but that I did purchase the phone at the end of January and it is under Warranty.
Thank you
Well, have to ask, is the phone up to date, with software and including your modem and prl?

Yes, all software is up to date. Samsung did it on their end, and I also did it on my end. I actually spoke with Sprint again about 1 hour ago, and they are going to send a tech to one of the towers that I connect to try to see why my phone will not connect to it. The tech rep mentioned that i have done all the required procedures and that there may be a lock on the device. Anyone experience this?
I had a similar issue to this happen. I had a device that would just not connect to the Network. What I ended up doing was the ##72786# on the dial pad. It worked like a charm.

That is a very useful code to use if anyone is ever having network problems. Just be prepared for a few reboots is all!

that's one of the things that the tech rep from sprint had me test on Wednesday. Unfortunately, it did not work for me. Did you do it more than once?
At this point, I have to wait until Tuesday, at which point Sprint is supposed to call me back and let me know how the results of the technician going to the tower ended up. If anyone is familiar, I believe it is called a "CMT Ticket".
Whenever I've had to use the code, it has worked on the first try. It does cause the device to reboot several times. Well keep us posted on what the Tech comes up with.

will do. i have seen a number of people experience the issue I am going through, so hopefully this will solve it so that other users don't have to go through what I have been going through.

I agree. This is probably the 5th I see someone posting saying that their network connectivity vanishes or is impaired after sending their phone into Samsung. Makes you wonder what the heck they exactly do to your phone.
The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Nothing more. Don't defeat the purpose of why it was introduced.

Seen plenty of these posts myself. Seems maybe some techs are damaging the antenna during phone disassembly and re assembly I would presume.??

Just did a search. Seems you are spot on. Quick search yielded way to many people reporting the same issue after sending a device in four repair.

The Samsung tech rep that I spoke to the last time was very confident in telling me that if I was receiving 3G, the fact that I was not receiving 4G LTE was not a phone issue, but a carrier issue. He said that the phone uses the same antenna to connect to both towers, so if you are connecting to one, then the antenna is not the issue.
I also found it interesting that Samsung's warranty DOES NOT cover phone replacements, per the Samsung rep. As he explained to me, they only repair phones and do not do phone swaps - those are done at the carrier level, which I find odd (how does a manufacturer not swap phones?)

And you don't think the samsung rep might be misrepresenting something? If not he would be admitting fault.

Most definitely. That did and still has crossed my mind. I actually asked the tech rep from Samsung where I could find a blue print for the phone, as I was under the impression that they were 2 separate antennas, but he says none is available (obviously if I google it, I will find it).

Wanted to provide an update to anyone following my situation.
I received a call on tuesday from the sprint rep checking to see if there had been any changes to my LTE service. I told her that nothing had changed and I still had no LTE. She informed me that the status on my ticket said "PENDING" and that she would call me back. Unfortunately today came and went and I did not receive a call. I was very busy at work and did not have a chance to call Sprint. I will be calling them tomorrow to ser what the latest is.
I will hopefully have some update tomorrow.

Any more info? A friend of mine had the same issue and had to fight sprint left and right for an actual replacement of the device. When the phone was replaced (swapped) by sprint he had no more issues.

This email will serve as the end of this thread. Unfortunately, I did not get the desired results I achieved.
After not hearing anything from the Sprint rep, I finally got fed up and called Sprint again on Friday. The rep who I spoke to said that he did not see a ticket on my account for the CMTS test. He did inform me that usually with these tickets, a rep will put it in, the technicians will go the tower and look at it, and the ticket will disappear and that they usually don't hear back (I found this extremely strange). After going back and forth, I finally hit my "hell with it" mode and decided to do the phone swap. After speaking with more customer service reps, I was able to get statement credits which would at least offset my $50 cost of replacing the phone.
My phone did come in on Tuesday, and I do now have 4G coverage. I am still extremely disappointed and frustrated with both companies, as I want to know why the phone was not working as opposed to just paying $50 and having it swapped. I am not the first person to have this issue, and sadly will not be the last. I now have a refurbished phone after only 4 months for no fault of my own.
I really like the phone, but I am going to have some serious thoughts when my contract is up in purchasing any future item from Samsung or re-upping with Sprint. I was given the runaround from both companies that left me extremely disappointed.
I wish whoever goes through an issue like this in the future better success. Believe me when I say I did a lot of research and really did everything I could on my end.
Thanks for everyone's input/attention.
