Not the same hardware?? - Samsung Captivate Glide

I keep seeing everyone claim that the hardware is the same between the att and rogers version, yet my att glide only has 724mb ram... am I the only one that noticed we have less ram, or did I get screwed???

Oh, interesting... on my AT&T Glide MemTotal in meminfo is only 739988KB. What's going on here...
Let's get a survey on this. Everyone, tell me what ROM you're using and which model you have (AT&T or Rogers), what ROM you're running, and what /proc/meminfo reports your MemTotal to be.

Omg! Mine says 723 mb! At&t ripped me off, I'm supposed to get 724 mb according to darkendvoid88. /sarcasm.
The phones are mass produced and they have the same hardware. If you don't believe this, get a tmobile sim card and put it in your phone. It's the same one, regardless of carrier

Came here to say this

Well I mean when I check the system stats on other hardware in our store I see the actual advertised ram, so either AT&T is lying or the SIII on sprint comes with extra ram to accommodate the system. When run the LMK through the task manager on stock rom it still averages 2-300 use so I assumed that was the system reserved. Absolute stock rom 2.3.6.

I believe some is VRAM and some for ROM.

I have a rodgers and it also says 724mb ram

im on rogers when i got my s3 i just opened drop box and selected i already have an account , sighned in and within 25 min my space was upsated.
There are a couple techniques listed here: http://www.cincygeek.com/2012/07/how-to-get-50-gb-dropbox-on-your-new-samsung-galaxy-s3/
You might lose your IMEI though, so flash at your own risk...

Same thing here, it was part of the process when first running the phone. However, you did have to do 5 different things to unlock the full 50gb, but it doesn't take much time.
As long as you're rooted, the instrcutions I sent you via PM will work.
YOU DO NOT NEED TO FLASH ANY ROMS to get it.
that's all I will say about it but please don't risk softbricking your phone to get this. it's way simpler than that but you'll have to search for the method yourself.
I got it on my Captivate

Is the 50GB lifetime or just for a year (limited). If it is lifetime i can see it being with the trouble to get.
Thanks
It's only for two years. That goes for any galaxy s3 on any network. AT&T didn't make the agreement with dropbox so no temporary 50 gb for us

Like a few folks above me have said, it's very easy to get the free storage space. All you need is root access, no special rom required. Fwiw, I did it on a Rogers rom.

It expires 7/15/2014, by which time 50GB or greater will be the basic free standard anyway.
Also, some people have reported that Dropbox took back the 50GB and reverted their account to the original 2GB (minus other referral bonuses, etc) after they got caught, so only cheat the system if you really need the extra space and have other backups.
(DropBox also caught on to the HTX OneX cheaters, and fixed that)
I accidentally "cheated" the system. I flashed a t-mobile rom when I got my SGS3 when it came out because thats all their was, and it was compatible. Turns out it had the dropbox.apk. I logged in and noticed it gave me 50GB free.
I still have it.
I've still got my space too.

Galaxy SII Plus

I just read about this thing, and I know we have leaks and such, but it worries me that we won't see JB. Why would they update ours and have a new one come out, and the new one is the same thing accept 8GB internal and runs JB out of the box. Anyone else at least confused on Samsung's thought process here?

Same as s3 mini a smaller budget friendly version of a popular device. The plus will probably fall to the low mid range devices similar to the level of the transform or moment or galaxy rival etc.

I'm not sure why but it's probably because they got left over parts they never put to use so they probably just slap them together into a mid range phone and make whatever they can out of the parts they wouldn't be able to get rid of anyways. Just my thought... if you can scrap older parts or left overs into a device you can use to sell via a carrier on a contract for 50 to 100$ maybe even free, why not?
Maybe looking to corner the market on pre-paid carriers with the left-over parts as mentioned before. Also, with apple rumors on a lower cost iphone for overseas markets, maybe this will be marketed as the H2H competitor.
We got Jelly already anyway so who cares? I mean if FL16 isn't good enough for a daily I don't know what is.

So why is this called Plus? Seems the same as the SII but with less storage? Same screen size, same camera's, both are dual core. Why would you go with this over a a SII?
I guess the positives of it rocking nearly the same hardware is that if the older S2 models don't get 4.2.x updates... the S2 + will be a sign of hope.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Looks like the price will be around $450usd (if its priced similarly to other countries by exchange rate) so itll be a lower mid range device on par with s3 mini slightly higher price than s3 and lower than prevail. So on contract it should come in between $99 and free(if it goes to us carriers that arent prepaid)

Who the hell knows. Probably size constraints cdma devices have alot more crap inside them than gsm does. International phones have one gsm hspa+ 21 or 42 antenna vs cdma has a 1x/3g plus wimax or 1x separate 3g and wimax. Then theres all the other parts in there wifi antenna bluetooth SoC RAM etc nfc chips are actually quite big. The s3 has it built into the battery because of that and the note 2 has it built into the battery cover with connectors that press against leads on the back housing
Edit: it also has a very limited range like maybe 2" MAX so it cant be embedded in the device it needs to be almost at the surface to prevent interference from the other hardware. Its range is so limited it wont eve work thru some phone cases

[Q] RAM Question

I just received my Tmo S3. I'm running CM10.1 (latest nightly) and I noticed that it is showing me that I only have 1.5GB (1591MB to be exact) of RAM. Why is it not showing up with all 2GB? Thanks!
Because that's not how computers work.
I know how computers work, it should be telling me somewhere in the neighborhood of ~1900 mb.

What he saying is you never get the full 2gb you ask why? The OS has to run somewhere, can't put it on your sd card. That's how computer works less of a issue there because you have such more space but same thing with hard drives. Just like your phone doesn't come with full the 16 or 32gb as prescribed for system apps. Basic knowledge.

4.1.2 out for Verizon

http://briefmobile.com/samsung-galaxy-s3-update-4-1-2-now-available
Not going to lie... a little disappointed about what the update includes (or lacks) but what can you do. It is unfortunate that there is such a big gap in hardware between the North America model and the international s3.
I did hear that there were rumors that there would be one hardware model with different internal storage amounts for the s4. That right there would be a great reason to upgrade in my option.
Either way it's great to see an update and hopefully we will get a taste of some stock 4.1.2

Seems unlikely that Samsung would have a phone that could support all of the different LTE bands plus WCMDA and EV-DO and that the US carriers will allow Samsung to deliver a phone without crapware. Only Apple has that pull.

The Galaxymod has some optimizations (tweaks) done to it. I don't think the carriers would go this route to be able to make multiwindow run smoothly.

I also have a Galaxy S2 ATT variant and since the international for 4.1.2 with a working multi view it works fine ported over to the i777 ATT SGS2. This is definitely on the carrier. They know if they give up this feature, then we wouldn't have a reason to upgrade so to speak. It's really sad how they try and cripple a top-end device just so that they can make more money. It's like saying our processor was obsolete before it even hit the market. Come on, we here all know that our processor can easily handle multitasking. To state otherwise is completely false.
The point is that 4.1.2 does not come with multiview (for non-international variants).
I don't see the big deal of the 4.1.2 release anymore without the Premium Suite anymore either.
I think there is an agreement between Samsung and the carriers for the release schedule of these features, so we may not get it until 4.2.1 (which may also fix the lock-screen security flaw). Since multiview wasn't in the original AOSP for our variants, your carrier isn't going to cook it with our existing short battery-life (stock).
Sure, the processor can run it, but also dual-core processor has been known to sap more battery life than the quad-core chipset in real world use.

Only 9 gigs free?!

Ummm wtf?? You mean to tell me that the stock software plus bloat equals 7 gigs of space?! that doesnt sound rightt.
I cant wait for debloated roms to hit xda!
It could be a combination of space that is used for the file system to function properly and the actual firmware itself. What phone are you using
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
Yeah that space usage is about on par with the HTC One so it sounds feasible... still its an insane amount of space to waste compared to the GS3 16GB...
In order to reclaim that space that's reserved, we would have to repartition the entire device as well wouldn't we?

From what I understand, the phone doesn't even report the missing storage, correct? If that's the case, I don't think a debloated ROM would do it. I could very well be wrong though, I don't have the phone and I've only loosely been following the at&t version (lost interest after the locked bootloader was confirmed). Tmonews was urging people to buy SD cards though if they are getting the T-Mo version since T-Mo only has announced the 16GB version because of the missing storage space.
http://www.tmonews.com/2013/04/buyi...y-s-4-make-sure-to-get-a-memory-card-with-it/
Generally, the phone will report the full storage if its not reserved/hidden. Have you launched Titanium Backup to see what it reports? I get 12.9GB on my S3 plus an additional 1.54GB for the ROM - so only 1.56GB is fully reserved... TiBu would be a quick way to see what you actually have access to total in the phone. They might have a huge reserve for System ROM, going with the ever-increasing application sizes coming out.
Thankfully tmo isn't locked down..
No I haven't checked tibu.. I will once I root it
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Xparent Skyblue Tapatalk 2
I'm guessing all these extra features they added is what's taking up an ass load of more space.
Sent from my SGH-M919
Yep, my Nexus 7 on 4.2.2 only reserved 5gb for the rom plus recovery. So we're talking about 4gb of bloat or Samsung stuff. Some of the Samsung stuff is good but definitely not all of it. Can't wait for some custom roms to pop up...
Flashed cm nightly and still only have 9gb not sure what hidden partitions are taking up the 7 missing gb its definitely not the stock apps
