How do I program/format tags? - NFC Hacking

So my 10 pack of NFC tags came in today and I am ready for fun!
I've been reading about some people "locking" cards and I'm a bit worried that if I program a tag to do something I can't "unprogram" it or whatever.
What do I do first, do I format it into a certain thing? Which app does that?
Sorry usually there are some stickies in forums that I read so I don't have to ask questions like this, but these are some expensive stickers and I don't want to ruin them.

I just went ahead and used nfc tasker and wrote some ****, pretty sure I can re-write.
this thing is awesome.

Just make sure you never select the "Make Tag Read-Only" checkbox
Most tags are preformatted. I've used NFC Task Launcher & tags from two vendors & never had to format.

Yeah that's what I've been doing all day yesterday and it seems to work fine.

Uh yeah, the guy who said to make them read only has basically screwed you. You can no longer edit your tags after you've programmed them.

Well it's a good thing that I have spent years honing my inborn ability to detect humor and did not actually take what he said seriously due to the obvious fact that my caution at locking tags would have raised several red flags at making them "read only"
Honestly if someone was stupid enough to think making them "read only" would not lock the tags he shouldn't even be using Android...

LOL. I've not dared try out the read only one. I mean I KNOW it will make them read only, but I thought PERHAPS it would still allow the device that wrote to it to modify it... otherwise what's the point?

[Q] Anyone else using NFC tags?

So I got the 10 pack + keychain kit from tagsfordroids.com. So far, the only real uses I have found were one for work and one for home. When I get my Bluetooth carkit thing from Dice Electronics this weekend, I may go ahead and program the keychain as well so the phone will connect to the car and such once I am in it. I am using NFC Task Launcher to program to tags.
I was wondering if anyone else uses NFC tags and for what uses?
I just got a few and do the same. I have one where I come home it turns on certain features, I have one in the car that turns on bluetooth, and one on my keychain that turns off WiFi, BT and a bunch of other stuff to save battery while I'm out. It would be even easier if someone would hack our nfc.apk so the setttings would apply at the lock screen or while screen off.
I use AnyTAG (free market app). It doesn't actually write the NFC tag, just reads the ID number from it (so you can still reuse "locked" tags). Would highly recommend it if you're the only person using your tags.

This was one of the first things I noticed immediately. Yeah, we know it's not much more to unlock the phone first, but would be soooo convenient.
I am moving this from General to Q&A because well, its a question. But I am very interested in how to use these better. It is a function out there for these phone that I think is not tapped enough. Maybe this thread will generate more information on the subject.
Thanks for the move. I struggled with whether is belonged in Q&A or not.
You have to unlock the phone to use them?? From a security standpoint I guess that's good but for convenience it almost makes them pointless.

I wouldn't say pointless. They can be programmed like a batch file, performing multiple tasks, not just a single function, but I agree that being able to do them with the phone locked would be nice.
I suppose though from a security standpoint, it does make more sense, didn't think of potentially harmful NFC uses.
For me its not worth buying tags for something I can just take a couple seconds to do or automate with tasker.

Others have said this, and I simply say "6 in one, half dozen in the other"... really just a preference at this point. In the meantime, I would like to keep this thread going as a discussion of uses for it, not reason to not get them.

...? Where did you see that? And can it be done on a stock SG3 (not rooted or anything...)?
FWIW, here is a small 8 min video I just saw when I was looking for something else about some of the functions of NFC. He is using the same NFC launcher app that you are using as well. But also talks about how some Samsung NFC tags won't work with Nexus 4 but do obviously with GNex.
It is from Gigaom, off the Reuters news site.
http://www.reuters.com/video/2012/1...-phone-an?videoId=239430247&videoChannel=3400
Can't watch it while at work so I will check it later, but I have heard of some tags having weird incompatibilities and such. Every now and then, when formatting a tag or programming, I will get the weird error about the tag's memory being too small. Not sure if thats what the video is getting at, but I will check it when I get home.

I could have sworn i read somewhere that AT&T had a "limited" number of them that they'd be shipping with pre-orders. Looks like you may be an AT&T subscriber? Not sure how you're doing the purchase but just figured I'd throw that out there.

Not sure, just thought I'd share. Does seem like they're including with at least the initial pre-orders, though. Maybe a CSR could tell you? The people in upgrades/sales will probably be misery knowledgeable. May be worth waiting to see and then tracking one if needed?

I can confirm Skip will be given as a free bonus with all motomaker orders for a "limited time," I just don't know how long (first few days? weeks?).
Thanks. I imagine it probably just depends on how the phone sells? Google/Moto is probably providing at&t with some stock to get Skip visible in the public and get people interested in using it. Just a thought.
How do you guys see it being useful? I don't mean that in a snide way, just curious. Maybe I don't know enough about it but seems to just replace swiping to open? I have group administrative policies through work so I'd probably not be able to benefit much from it since we are forced to use a pin or password unlock. Kinda kills all the lock screen options out there. Damn government work. Anyway, seems like there could potentially be some cool Dev to expand the Skip functionality in the future? Call waiting/music and volume controls/etc. Not sure if any of that is compatible though.

It's kind of hard to understand exactly how useful it is until I actually get it later this week and test it out myself. Not even the press has given a review on it despite getting their motomaker phones yesterday, which I find it somewhat annoying because I'm curious exactly how useful it is. The basic usage is meant to work with a moto app that will allow your screen to disable the security lock pin/pattern if you had it enabled and it requires you to tap the phone to the clip on your clothing/belt or one of the "dots" that you can put in your car, desk, or other safe zone you want. Beyond that, the details are limited. Just have to wait at this point.
any word on if this can be used with other devices? I'd like this for my work phone that i cant root/tasker. Any info would be greatly appreciated

I don't think nfc tags inside it are propriety, so it should work any app that can control nfc. But that's the catch, you still need an app to control the actions and recognize the tags, which may still probably require root to do so depending on what app you use. You could try installing the moto skip app if you can find the apk and then see if it works. No guarantee though.

I have to use a password as well for work, and it looks like if you get the tags and the skip you can just leave the phone on them and just turn on the screen to unlock it and then you can use the voice controls.

Well, it looks like the Moto Skip functionality doesn't work with any run-of-the-mill NFC tags. I installed their app, but I think it only listens for NFCs with a particular data header.
Anyone with a Skip tag willing to post an NFC dump?

According to Motorola's own support pages:
Can Moto X support the use of other NFC tags, or only Motorola Skip?
Once you have setup Motorola Skip, consumers can buy alternative aftermarket NFC tags (supported by the NXP chipset) and link it to Moto X for use alongside Motorola Skip.
Not bad.

I saw that, but they're leaving something out. I tried a half-dozen different tags that work perfectly with other NFC programs on my Moto X, but none of them trigger Motorola Skip setup. There's no way to manually run the Skip setup, so it must listen for some kind of preprogrammed code on the official Skip NFC tags.
EDIT: Just got off the phone with Motorola (thought I'd give it a shot). The support rep I talked with said Motorola Skip was only compatible with the official Skip clip and stickers. I mentioned the support page online saying it'd work with other tags, and she said that conflicted with her documentation. Boo.

Do you have an original Skip tag? I thought you needed to set up a real Moto tag first. Then you can setup 3rd party tags - at least that's how I read it.

Received my T-Mobile Moto X today. (Ordered it yesterday, they apparently decided to ship Priority Overnight, Saturday Delivery). It came with an official Motorola Skip. Configured it and the dots without an issue. Then went to Security > Manage NFC Unlock and tried to associate an NFC-based loyalty card I happened to have around. (Five Stars card, fwiw). It recognized the tag and indicated it needed to make additional room on it. I was prompted to "erase the data" on the card. Given that I really didn't want to render the card useless, I passed. But it sure seemed to me as if I had a blank tag of some kind that I could have written to it and started using it.

Good. This is consistent with what's in the online documentation.
BTW does anyone know if original Skip tags can be purchased at retail stores, or is it only orderable from Motorola?
The skip was a horrible idea. I received mine 2 days ago after waiting the full 10 days. Then yesterday I went to the mall wearing it on my cargo pocket for my shorts and lost it somewhere..... Big ass waste of $20.

I can't get it in canada.
I'll do an NFC dump if I can get my hands on one.
At first I thought it was ridiculous to pay $20 for a simple NFC tag, but I can't get anything to activate the motorola skip software on my moto x.
I can unlock my screen with tasker if I could just get an NFC tag to be read with screen off or locked, but I cant get the motorola to read any of my NFC tags with my screen off or locked.... Anyone know how to do this? I know its possible because the skip is detected when the screen is off

[Q] Import NFC tag

My bus ticket is using NFC technology. I tried to import data from card to NFC tag, than stick that tag to back of my phone, so I don't have to carry that card always with me, just the phone.
But problem is that I can't import data because NFC bus ticked is protected by serial key. Any way to crack that key?
Thank you

Someone has asked this question before. Not sure if it was you but I'll return to same answer someone else gave to the same question. The protection is installed to stop people replicating it and creating their own 'amended' data. Probably with new dates of validity.
What you are requesting is
a) Illegal
b) Against XDA rules.
I think I can say this with confidence. This site won't give you the answer.

Well, thank you for your answer. Seems illegal but I just wanted to 'upgrade' the technology which bus company is using. They probably won't do it since 2020...
Bah humbug. There's nothing illegal about taking a bus pass which you own and making something else produce the same NFC signal. That's like saying that I can scan my frequent buyers cards into an app and then use them all on my phone.
The key is probably easily cracked, but I know of no available way to crack it, short of writing your own script to brute-force it.

The key is in the language used.
Quote - "But problem is that I can't import data because NFC bus ticked is protected by serial key. Any way to crack that key?"
You're right, there is nothing illegal with your scanning frequent buyers cards. I hadn't realised they had protection on. (I never use them anyway so wouldn't know)
The owners of the software/data have put a serial key on it. To protect against it being hacked. It isn't open source. You only purchase to use said ticket for one day/week/month, however long you bought the ticket for. Once it's hacked what next? (We both know the possibilities that exist once it's hacked)
I have a suggestion, why waste time using brute force? If it isn't illegal why not phone the travel company who issued the ticket and ask them for the key.
Surely if it isn't illegal they will only be too happy to supply.
Problem solved.

If you knew something about that travel company, you would also try to do everything on your own, believe me. I bet that 90% of them don't know what NFC is, especially Mifare and protection key etc. It would be hard to contact a person in that company who know what am I talking about, probably impossible.

I'm going to leave it here.
However, I want to leave you with a thought.
Five years from now you have developed an incredible app for android that expectations say will make you a millionaire.
Yet a month later you only have a 1,000 downloads at a dollar apiece. A thousand bucks! WTF!
This took you two years to assemble and market.
Then you think back and remember this post and wonder. So you search online for "insert your app name here" and the word crack and key.
Lol - thousands of entries, after all your app is popular.
thing is... no one wants to pay for it.
but the thing is... they only wanted to try it before they paid....
But no ones paying.
I'm outta here.
Companies try to lock down all kinds of things unnecessarily. It doesn't mean that you have to respect their misguided wishes.
He's not trying to steal from the bus company, he just wants to increase his convenience. There is nothing malicious about that.
There's no reason to be a negative Nelly and try to stifle his urge to innovate. There are enough entrenched market leaders trying to protect their little artificial fiefdoms without you sucking up and trying to do their work for them.

Any cobtribution is a good one but I am not familiar with the legality either but dont see it matter unless you are posting saying thieves can use it on a stolen device.
In all honesty, ppl legitamitely forget their passwords and lock themselves out I am sure all the time and at times if you purchase the phone from a third party theres really no way to remove or bypass it without proof of purchase or replacing the device which some might not have because of how it was purchased.

I have successfully bypassed the FRP Reset Protection no matter how much security is on the phone, passcode, pattern, fingerprint. All are bypassed for a full clean factory reset.
So short answer, yes. Also there is a high likelihood that this method works on ALL variants.

If what your saying is true do the right thing and contact the manufacturer and carriers with it I'm sure that they would like to know. The fact that you haven't already isn't right.

I am in full agreement with this statement. However I have no idea where to start. Again this was basically proof of concept until it because a reality. Tested it at least 20 times and every time I've been able to bypass FRP 100%. Even gave it to my director and had him lock it down with fingerprint and google account and 10 minutes later he was speechless.

Pm me the method. I want to try on my phone
I personally would contact MikeChannon (forum admin) at http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=335322 and go from there. I'm all for public disclosure but if you are worried about legal or forum rules I think he'd be more informed.
From the Moderator
The bypass method would not violate any law per se. The only issue that would be in question is if you own the phone or lease it.
Under that specific lease agreement it probably has wording about applying custom software to the phone.

ESN lockout is what makes turning over a lost or stolen phone difficult. And yet there is a huge grey-market trade on ebay and other places. I image they are all going overseas to get the appropriate chips switched out for resale. And if they have an operation set up for that, physically removing the flash chip and reprograming it would be a breeze. IMHO the lockout is more of a money generator for samsung so they can charge you to unlock it if you lock yourself out.
Describing the process is no more illegal than rooting. And if you figured it out, someone else will too. Only they might not share in hopes of selling the service or profiting somehow.

Meaning if I share then I'm opening up a whole new market that will explode as bad as Pokemon Go.....
or meaning someone else will release it anyways in time so whether you release it or not doesnt matter outside of you being "first" lol

Actually it would destroy or prevent a market. Markets only exist for those who know how and can do it. At the moment that is Samsung. You don't share it and Samsung makes a bit more money. Then someone else figures it out and they also don't share.... you start seeing adverts on eBay priced a bit below Samsung for the "get back into your phone!" service (or maybe it's just you trying to make a buck ;P ) If you do release it or someone else figures it out and releases it. Well,... we will still see the adverts on ebay for the techna-challenged but it will be a hell of a lot cheaper because it is a known process thus many people offering thus competition.

Go try it on your Verizon phone with latest security update patch.

You try it. My phone is set up and running the way I want it. I'm not going wipe it for a silly reason like proving myself wrong or right. That's your job.
If it works or not isn't the whole point of posting the video. Clearly it's not illegal to expose how to get around FRP. If it were, RootJunky would have been charged and his videos pulled.

Intercepting device queries with logcat from computer?

Was wondering what I would look for in alogcat or other log readers what the phone responds with and if there was a way to intercept and show something else, like I run a command on pc, app or script intercepts and returns something else? Such as Rom version, size, make, model, I guess technically device spoofing. My G6 won't let me play blades cause the app checks what phone it is and apparently my isn't on the list

Well first off the phone specs don't allow to be played like you could spoof it easily just by even changing the device fingerprint though I can't guarantee doing that alone will work but I'm telling you now it's more than likely gonna be unplayable man. There's a reason the g6 or g6 play doesn't support the blades
Update I tried it on my g6 play and since I'm watching hells kitchen now in the words of Gordon Ramsay "that was an absolute ****ing disgrace, **** me" it's very unplayable my guy
Also I just realized your asking Questions about the g6 and this is the g6 play forum @BIGWORM please move this question to the Moto g6 forum if able
Well it is a G6 play, but I noticed it when I was selling a phone at the ecoatm machine, even though the app for it said I had my phone spoofed to a Google pixel 2 the machine read some other info like oem info and still read it as a Moto device so... Not that I want to use it as a way to cheat and I know that's how some could use it, if the machine can read that info, where is that info stored and if rooted can it be changed

This is like asking how to pass a diamond test at a pawn shop, after you already tried to sell them fake stones. You're explaining how this could be used to commit a slew of felonies and saying - "I totally won't use it for that, even though I already tried." You should give up on quick cash ideas and get a job. It takes like 2 weeks to get a paycheck. Which is about how long it'd take the police to give you a knock if you defraud that machine. We're not helping you commit fraud or grand larceny. There are better places on the internet to get that kind of help. XDA is not one of them.
Hmm well just now seen the reply to this and dude it's straight skep what your asking lol your basically asking if we know how ecoatm checks past your phones device fingerprint and can be done to spoof it which yes we do know the various things it can do and how to "potentially" change it but no we will not be willing to tell you what those methods are. I'm glad you were honest at least about this but we will be keeping an eye out on other forums to make sure no one else is asking similar questions now so I wouldn't expect much luck in asking around on xda
