[Idea. Not a real product] PS Vita style case - Galaxy S III Accessories

Hi everyone,
A few minutes ago I had an idea. A case that gives you game controls and looks like a ps vita. Before I try to design and build this. First I would just like to know if anyone would even want to buy this, next I would appreciate any and all help if I get some interest. If not enough interest, then I would probs just make an instructable. Here is a quick sketch that I made:

Just to be clear, I very well might have to give up on this at some point so it is not a definate that I will make it.

Patent it before Apple does!

how much would you plan it to cost?
you can buy a PS vita looking android 4.0 gaming rig for under 90 bucks on ebay.

I'd buy it depending on the price

Th price really depends on costs and I have no idea what it will cost. This is still just a drawing so the final product is a very long way off.

I'd be very interested in it. Looks really cool. Would be great for games with on screen controls n emulators

sounds cool but I'd rather have a universal one since I'm swapping phones very often. Maybe you can change the device "holder" to an expansive type?
something like this BUT, of course less bulky looking something more slim to go along the line of the new devices.

well, then what fabrication abilities do you have? this would involve circuitboards, and at minimum vacuum formed, if not castings of plastic...
what programming do you have? can you set up a USB controller?
make a prototype, and then see how much that cost... and by prototype, I mean essentially a sellable product, not some random duct-taped pile of bits that only was inexpensive due to using used parts.
or is this just a drawing of an idea from a person that has no ability to make it?

You can also try Kickstarter to try to get funds to get this working n maybe get more people interested once you have a workable demo going

i was trying to come up with this for my gs3 with the two sides clamping onto tho phone via the usb dock and headphone jack so i can run an extender for usb and audio out. got a 360 pad hacked but having problems with hacking the usb to micro usb on the phone. gotten a little messy with the mod too.

At this moment I have very little ability to make it, however, I am a quick learner. I feel like there is about a 50% chance that this will be completed. Right now I am working on a rough 3d model of the plastic shell on computer. I was thinking about getting that 3d printed once it is done. I dont know how to set up a usb controller and I can program some basic java.

I really like this, but if you really wanted something like this you can use gameclip and ps3 controller, but the reason that my idea, IMO, is better is because you could fit the whole thing in your pocket.

Very rough "sketch" 3d model. Gets my point across that it will be 2 parts and they will attach to each other and plug into the phone.

It looks like an endangered insect, lol.

looks good. keep it coming

Hi guys,
I have realized that this could never come to the market, at least if it was made by me. If it was made by me then costs would just be too high because of my inability to mass produce all of the parts needed to create this. I just cant afford it and I really cant design it and market it and assemble it all while going to high school and doing homework and studying. However, once this is done, I will make an instructable for all of you to see and make this yourselves and perhaps one of you would be able to perfect it and produce it on a large scale. If that happens, I ask for nothing in return ecxept for credit where credit is due, but I doubt that this will happen...

Flygrip

Hey guys, I was browsing through some threads and stumbled upon this curious contraption called Flygrip. It's like a brace that you slip your finger through that you put on the back of the phone. It improves more stability and allows easier access to the screen because you don't have to fully grip the phone. This is probably useful especially with the Nexus because it has a rather large screen.
Anyone have any experience on this? I'm thinking of buying one and trying it out because it looks really handy.

I dunno. I think it would make it more awkward with one hand and 2 handed isn't needed.
I like the direction their going though. Creative thinking.
Galaxy Nexus - 4.0.3 CM9
Asus Transformer - 3.2 Revolver
A creative product, but ultimately more hassle than it's worth. A phone case will protect it from falls; this product reduces the likelihood of drops but does nothing for you if you do.
And you have to remember to carry around your phone and this Flygrip. And you'll constantly be answering the question, "what's that?"
maybe everyone has small hands but i dont seem to have a problem only using 1 hand

What if you stick it on to your phone case?
I guess you could, but that seems cumbersome... You'd have a bulge in your pocket for sure, and then you'd be dealing with a whole new set of questions...
I wish there was a vote up button.. I just thank people that I think are witty
In terms of the product.. I do agree it would bring a slew of questions and I'm not sure how much help it would actually be.. guess I should try it before I say anything negative though.
A perfect example of a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.
Can't wait for the follow up product that allows you to strap a phone to your face so you don't miss that important message.

Actually, I think this is pretty cool. While it certainly isn't necessary, it looks actually pretty useful. I just ordered one for myself. I have smaller hands and the gNex has been a bit of a challenge lately since I can't text or browse one handed anymore. It comes with a free case (they're getting a batch of gNex cases in next week) so I'm going to attach it to the case or maybe just put it on one of the other cases I ordered. Oh and if you wan't free shipping, use the code "IDIOT".
I can't tell if your post was one long setup to a snarky punchline, or if "idiot" is an actual discount code.
The world may never know.

lol, sorry for sounding snarky. I totally didn't mean it to come out that way although that's definitely how it reads. "IDIOT" actually is the discount code. I found it by googling it (http://sideshownetwork.tv/category/shows/iotw).
I really did order this so as silly as it may appear to be, I don't mind being a guinea pig. I'll post my thoughts on it and the gnex case when it arrives hopefully next week sometime.
it does look interesting, altho useless.
apple brand it, and they've got themselves a winner.
I just wanted to bump this thread. I just put in an order for one after being on the fence for a while and will let you guys know how it is!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKNUkB9N1Yg
That review kinda pushed me over the edge and with that "IDIOT" code (it gave me option to choose Next-Day shipping...for free), I was down to check it out.
Looks ghetto as hell but seems pretty functional since I always have problems reaching around the screen with one hand. I wouldn't mind getting one to try but getting it internationally shipped would probably add even more to the already steep price...

You had me interested until I saw the price. $30 is way too much for what it does.
i picked one up out of curiosity... i like it. it's nice to be able to reach everywhere with your thumb and not have to reposition or oddly balance your phone. gimmicky ? yeah, kinda. will it become a must have on my phone ? i dunno, still getting use to the feel and i need to adjust the position of it a bit. there isn't a way to temporarily fit it in order to know exactly where you need to mount it so it's kinda trial and error for what's most comfortable. i ordered a couple spare mounting pads so i can dial it in then see how i like it.
they should cut down on the bells and whistles packaging and sell it for 8 bucks, that's what i see the retail value of something like this. i think they'd easily sell 5x the amount for 1/3 the price.

Very cool product. My main hesitation of using something like this, is the fact that it's a "permanent" fixture on your phone - unless you sacrifice a case and adhere the fly grip to it.
My second problem is the price. $30?? I would have thought no more than $5...

I wouldn't recommend the dock as a stand-in dock, where you plug it in on the go, or quickly. The phone is only supported by the actual USB plug! So I'd be REALLY worried about the port getting loose over time, so I'd skip that. I had that happen to my SGSII. But on the other hand, you can lay it down and it was made for this, too! So there is no need to worry about the usb plug getting loose. I really like it for this. Just look at the last 2 pictures.
I hope you like it! It's a decent dock, I guess. It's more of a stand now. Haha.

Am tempted by this dock... but don't understand what you're saying here. I mean... in the images it looks like there's a rear-support for the phone to lean against. Do you have to faff with this or something, or does it remain up, so you can just drop the phone on and have it lean?
Alternatively, does anybody have suggestions for docks that work with cases? I got the iGadgitz case (link), which I'm totally pleased with... it doesn't turn your pockets inside-out when pulling it out.

Tap it to the right or to the left, and it'll put some kind of strain on the phone's port. That's what I don't like. I have a dock that DOES support the sides, and still ended up busting the port. I don't use the inbuilt charging feature. I just put it in the landscape orientation and use a normal microusb, and that also allows me to grab my phone while I'm waking up in the morning and unplug it correctly.

Ah, gotya. Yeah, my Streak sits in landscape, with a fat connector, so never realised the difference with the Note and a tiny connection.
And bugger... your port has already been wrecked? So it's a real issue. Bah.
Mmm... not exactly swamped with options that allow for cases though, but don't think I can risk it since I've gotta stick with this baby for 23.75 months yet
That said, this thing does last an entire day, unlike my Streak... so maybe I'll just get a spider-holder or something without charge/usb.
I use the dock daily. I just don't use the built in charger. I turn it on its side and use the regular charger. I think the angle's great.
But this does make me miss the blackberry dock. Blackberry's have metal connectors ONLY for docks that will never mess with any ports . Fantastic idea in my opinion. Oh well. This is a monster of a phone! hehe. Sold my 9900 for it
Awesome.
Thanks for the info, I've gone a head and ordered one.
I guess it'll be safe on my desk, as the odds on knocking it are near zero. As an alarm clock though, I totally get you... I'd wreck it in a single day.
Ah, charging all day at work... I'll probably save a million* in electric bills.
*Ok, maybe $0.01 per month, lol.

and this is a simplified prototype to test fitment and other things.
it fits the GSM and LTE Nexus with a case on it. the touchstone goodies are inbetween the case and the phone itself. opening the phone was unnecessary.
right now the phone is a bit of a tight fit. need to get that sorted out and try again in a few days. also need to verify the touchstone will work with the gap i gave it. (.050ish)
look forward to hearing any comments you guys have.

are u charging via pogo pins or micro usb?
Only issue I see with this is that the placement off the touchstone would have to line up exactly with where you place the coil.
From what I see it wouldn't work on mine since my coil is much higher to avoid interference with NFC...looks very promising though!

i tried it and there weren't problems with nfc and the coil using beam and an id
and also IF there were problems it wouldn't matter because it's a car dock pretty much sure he's not using nfc in that case
Pretty limiting in that you've blocked off the phone's speaker and the headphone jack. Sure, some people use bluetooth for everything - but some don't. Just some food for thought.
Looks cool. Any way you can share a cad file of this. I drew a few up myself and I'd like to compare dimensions.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Impressive.
Does the thickness of the material interfere with the cam at all? IIRC it has a pretty wide view. That said, dude, it has a hole for the camera, good stuff
Let's start from the top
Charging through the pogo pins. charging rate appears to be around 750Ma, or around 40% an hour. It was good enough to keep my phone charged while tethered streaming a movie. So its good enough for me.
I realize I didn't leave any provisions for the internal mics or speakers to do their thing. Much less room for the headphone and USB port. I'm only making a few of these for me and some friends willing to conform to my apple-esque control over how their phone is setup.
The NFC works fine, planning on using an NFC tag to launch the car dock.
Not sure about the camera, I should check that...
T-Keith, PM me your email and I'll try and send you some files when I get it to a point where I'm happy (it fits kinda tight right now)
Thanks for all the kind words, I'll get some nicer photos up soon.
Thats just good stuff - would love to see this extended to a home landscape dock.
I'm confused about how/what is holding the phone in the dock.
looks awesome. You could start a Kickstarter to get funding. I want one!
Definitely looks promising. Great inspiration, I might see what I can come up with if I have some free time. This is just begging for some rapid prototyping fun.
I'd also love to take a look at your files. Great work.

Agreed! If you post up the cad files when you're done I can probably whip one up in my company's makerbot. I can try and figure out the cost and go from there. This is an AWESOME project!
Question.
If you've modded your case so you can charge using a Touchstone, haven't you already got magnets in there to hold the handset in place when using the Touchstone?
If so, then what does the plastic bit achieve?
I'm not trying to criticise, I'm just confused is all.
Did you ever make more progress on this? I use a touchstone in my car now but something to keep the phone a bit more secure would be awesome!

Most people are afraid to use JUST a touchstone in their car because if you hit a big bump then your phone could go flying. This is EXACTLY what I was looking to do, integrate a touchstone into a regular car dock so that you can just drop it in for wireless charge and not worry about your phone launching across the car when you make a quick turn. I think I'm going to try to modify an already made dock to fit the touchstone as the back plate, as I don't have access to a CNC machine or a 3D printer =(
EDIT: Sorry if it's a bit off topic, but I found a dock that looks like it'd be perfect to cut out the back and integrate a touchstone. What do you guys think?

The GameKlip™

The new GameKlip™ is here! I started a new thread to keep things organized. Check it out here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027611
Hello again everyone! I just launched an accessory for the Galaxy SIII (and other android phones) that you guys might be interested in! I've always loved playing games on my smartphones, but on screen controls were always frustrating. When I discovered the Sixaxis App, and native usb host and controller compatibility with the SIII, I had to figure out a good way to attach my phone to the controller. I came up with the GameKlip™.
I am a university student, and long time xda member. I've been tinkering with this project in my spare time and am now ready to produce them. I hope you guys like it! Let me know what you think!
More information and ordering info available here: http://thegameklip.com/ Starts at $15!!
Update: I shot another quick video showing how strong the GameKlip™ is. Take a look!
Update2: I have replaced the photos of the Galaxy S3 GameKlip™ with a cleaner, more accurate, representation of the final GameKlip™ (still hand cut). Its actually the same one I used in the video above! I have no issues pressing the buttons. The final version has the tabs moved up a little as well to accommodate for the bottom curve on most phones
Update3: I added a lot more information to my website. Check it out!
Update4: I just took some new photos of the production model! Notice the smooth cuts and plenty of room to press all the buttons. I have also updated the first image above.

I'm looking at the pictures of this device and I don't see how it is secure? it is just molded hard plastic in the general width of the phone. The plastic touching the phone is smooth. There is no tensioning device to squeeze the sides. i imagine if i put my phone in it and tipped it past level the phone would fall right out. Thats probably why that phone and hand that is "holding it upside down" is cut and pasted out of its original surroundings. I would imagine that it didn't get picked up by Kickstarter because they know it will be the cause of many a broken phone. Sorry to be a downer.

The phone isn't cut and pasted in the balcony picture. I held the phone with one hand and took the picture with the other I used a fill flash to light the controller, which may be throwing you off.
The material itself has a little spring to it and is molded to be just a hair thinner than the phone. The tabs hold it very securely. I can hold mine upside down with my S3 and shake it without anything coming lose or falling off.
I was looking all around for a clip with no success. Even tried to talk a Gamestop worker to give me their display clip! Found this the other day but seems so un elegant. http://imgur.com/a/sRiLs Thought about epoxying a case to the controller, but glad I found the GameKlip before I went that route.

Thank you! I put 2 to 3 weeks on my website to be safe, but hopefully I'll be able to ship much sooner! And thank you for helping spread the word! I tried posting something over at AndroidCentral and got perma-banned for it. Oh well, xda is better anyway

Ha ha, I just posted it over there in the Accessory section.
Why did kickstarter reject you?
And it looks like it works even with a case on right
Would you be able to make one for the xbox controller?
I just hate using the ps3 controller.

Gameklip PS3 platorm adapter to hold your phone:mini review video

I got this yesterday and I really like it.
Makes me want to game more on my phone now!
Its a quick video but I hope you like it!
Regards
I don't like the GameKlip because of:
-The connection between the clip to the controller isn't tight enough
-The piece is not universal
-The device sticks a little too high, should be angled more carefully
-(and finally) its a stolen idea (can't help myself)
Check out the Andraxis Project:
-Its original
(we had the idea to make a connector between phone and PS3 controller to use SIXAXIS App)
-Its universal
-Clip to controller is stronger connected
-Developer is honest, but broke, but active with the project

I just wished I had a few weeks and $10,000 to blow. We could get a better design with an adjustable arm (like your car-phone holders) and we could get it from a Plastics Company in China. That way its much more durable (than Andraxis or GameKlip) and costs cheaper too ($5 each). Actually sounds like a perfect thing for Kickstarter!
Im really sorry for you that they stole your idea. I saw it on some Android news website and thought to myself and wondered if you just changed the name from Andraxis to Gameklip. I didnt even think about it that someone would actually steal such an idea... Thats just a shame.

I don't mind.
Afterall, I did make the .stl (that's the 3D model) publicly available.
I just wished if someone did pick up this project (I'm working fulltime, parttime study, and got to do normal chores/left home) however that they would improve it.
His implementation isn't the type of quality I had in mind, I want to ensure maximum connection between your expensive device and the controller. I also want it to be universal because lets face it, Android devices come in all shapes and sizes.
Anyways, I'll leave you guys with a picture of the fun times we had:

This is a very serious issue and I am not going to go into this since it is really not my business and I can surely understand your frustration with this but as the review I have to disagree with some points you mentioned.

I disagree...my Note is very tight in there. I mean I am not going use it to skydive.

No problem for me...feels really good and looks fine when gaming...it just made me realize how heavy the note is lol
Sorry about the other issues but I just wanted to give my impressions.

No you're alright.
What I mean is that, the bottom clip doesn't cover enough surface area of the top.
That's my honest opinion. This leaves it vulnerable to "pop out" if its bumped, like lets say on a train.
The angle is fine, and he's dedicated a lot of space your the shoulder buttons. However, I think its a little "too much" space. He should've pushed it backwards a little to make it easier to access the /_\ button and keeping the unit more compact.
My biggest gripe is that it isn't universal. Why he chose to go with that, beats me.
And he's encouraging people to buy it for non-compatible devices and just apply Scoth Tape... what if doesn't work, the customer would be unhappy, and he's unwilling to refund them.
Yeah I wish it was for multiple phones or adjustable so I could use it with my case for sure.
