soft keys with game emulators? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm going to get a Gnex soon, and one of the main things I will want to do play my old games. I heard the soft keys are not on screen when not used, so what do you do to bring up the soft keys? And if they were always there that would kind of ruin the experience for games and movies, wouldn't it? I plan to use bt and on screen controllers so if the keys were always on screen that could cause problems. Thanks for helping a noob.

The soft keys turn into a dot, it will still be there.
The API for it is for videos, where you won't be touching your screen. Once you touch your screen, the button,s will pop back out, so the API won't work for games.

Thanks for the info. What does API mean? I Googled it but I couldn't figure it out. So on an emulator, the d-pad may be right next to the softkeys and possible to hit at any given time? Also, when outputting with HDMI to a TV, are the keys or dots on the tv? Thanks again.

Nah, i did not hit the softkeys on accident while playing pokemon
Outputting on HDMI is basically mirroring your phone's display, so the softkeys will still be a dot.

Cool thanks. Sounds good. I'm hoping for a price drop on Monday, and I'm still deciding about the gnex or an unlocked gs2 skyrocket. I'm a big fan of the gs2 aesthetically having used an epic 4g touch extensively.

the benifit of on-screen buttons is when your finger slides from the display area to the navbar, it knows and doesn't do anything (unless you lift your finger before pressing it)
so in games like osu it's so helpful (i have accidentally pressed the back button on my razr while playing)

You can always use a custom ROM that allows you to disable the buttons in the power menu. I know AOKP has it and it works flawlessly.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Cool thats good information thanks for helping a noob

Detailed HTC Touch Pro2 review

Hi guys,
Here's a detailed review about the HTC Touch Pro2.
It's in Dutch, but even if you can't read it (or perhaps use Google Translator) you'll enjoy looking at the pics.
There are three demo videos showing the interface and multimedia, and the proof that the AC T110 TV out cable will work (the original Touch Pro cable).
Link to the review.
Awesome! Thanks for the tip!
heres the link for the englis translation via google

Thanks great review!
pretty good review. Handles almost 90% of the things I wan't to know about the phone
informative review...keep them coming!
hey, check out this video in case you want to see the sprint mogul vs the TP2:

1280x720 @ 60fps! make sure you can handle the playback!
now w/ Youtube HD link! (only 30fps though)

There is no info about the FM radio??? It seems missing in the TP2

Radio or not, man, I want this phone and I will go buy it if it's available tomorrow. So fast and smooth. Sounds great too! I can do without the radio.
2 questions....
1. In that review, it said it comes with ultra clear screen protector. do you really think it will come with one or will i have to buy one separately?
2. Question about the accelerometer. when you pull the keyboard out the screen switches to landscape mode. Do you think if you just turn the phone sideways that the screen will turn to landscape mode (with the keyboard closed)????

1. Yes for sure. All my HTC phones came with screen protectors.
2. No, you will need a tweak to switch the home screen to landscape mode by turning the phone. Some software will work by turning the phone but not the home screen.
That's stupid that they advertise it has a accelerometer since you have to open the keyboard to switch to landscape mode. i bought the htc tilt when it first came out for at&t and I'm pretty sure that it didn't come with a screen protector. You said all your htc phones did? Did you buy the tilt?

Huh? what do you mean? In what way would landscape mode be USEFUL with the keyboard not open? I don't understand. In the browser, with the keyboard closed, you should be able to rotate the phone and the screen will rotate...also with photos, and anything else you need to do in landscape...but a landscape switch for TouchFlo3D without the keyboard out is kinda pointless, no?
I don't mean to start a massive fight about it, but I don't want my phone rotating touch flo like crazy just because I am holding the phone a certain way. What if I am gesturing towards something with the TouchPro2 in my hand and when I bring my hand back, everything is all landscape and I have to wait for it to rotate back?
I don't think this is dumb, and I feel it can easily be fixed with just a software tweak. Shouldn't be hard at all...although I do not understand what you would need it for.

No...Your idea is more stupid. like NeoDMD said, I dont want my home screen rotating everytime I move. It is useful for certain applications but definitely not the home screen.!
hopefully the transition between home screen and landscape mode is very fast, hopefully no load time
so like some applications will take you into landscape mode even if you have the keyboard closed like it you played a video or went into camera mode right or even internet browser?

Nope. I don't have the TILT, but my P3600i and HD came with one. I know the TD2, Cruise and Cruise 2 also comes with one. So I presume most of them will. Maybe they didn't give it to you or it was stolen from your box
BTW, I saw the video on the TV-Out part and there was some flickering near the end of the movie where they were using coreplayer. Does anyone know what he is talking about and why it is flickering like mad?
Many thanks!

I believe the point would be to be able read it comfortably while holding it in landscape. Why would I need the keyboard open to use TF3d? And why wouldn't I want to use TF3D in landscape mode? I'm going to be reading, watching vids, and browsing in landscape mode. Do I have to rotate back to portrait every single time I go back into TF3D?

Isn't that still a problem for other apps? Like the browser etc. If you're willing to accept the problem there, what's so crazy about someone else being willing to risk it everywhere?

Honestly what'd I like more than accelerometer detection is the ability to fix everything in landscape (although I could stand the phone app being in portrait) permanently. Portrait is next to useless to me. I'm new to winmo, but do you think someone will/has tweak(ed) it that way? Or is there a control panel setting?
I am too a bit disappointed that the homescreen landscape choice isn't there from the factory (without the kb open)
How do we use this phone in the car in a holder while using it also as an GPS device. I would have to use a holder that can hold it kb out or then i'd need a rotating holder to flip it every time i go out of the GPS. Not a big pain, but still.
How about a button (on the screen) to make it flip to landscape (similar to the one that triggers the phone when the kb is open)

Optical Joystick (Trackpad?)

I've see much vids of Desire but none of them reveal the capabilities of the new joystick. What are its functions, is it more close to joystick or a trackpad?
its like the trackball of the other android devices, just optical -> u can slide over it....and if u hold your finger on the optic sensor u can klick with it, somebody said in a video that u'll get hardware feedback when using the optical joy

Yeah I saw that vid. Simple swiping and clicking can be done with touch screen either. A demonstration of more precise operations is needed.

A real joystick or a real trackpad allows much more than swiping and clicking.
For example, you can hold a joystick direction to trigger autorepeat or make really fast movements without taking finger off.
it's an optical trackball, for want of a better term.
In the same way that you get optical mice as opposed to a mouse with a ball in the bottom. The optical trackpad is simply an optical version of the scroll ball... in other words, same functions as the regular scroll ball without the moving parts.

This is what I want too.
Dont want my big thumbs messing up the whole screen.
I look forward to the optical tracking system. I suppose it may be because I don't play action style games. I'm more of a puzzle/cards kind of guy. There are very few times I play phone games any how.
Actually i can't see the optical version making more sense, than the mechanical.
I personally almost never use it.
I believe its main uses would be as a hardware camera-button (that is, for taking the photo), and to scroll in text when typing.
Yep....Useless....I use my trackball about once every couple of days. Touch here and touch there is much faster... Oh wait I use it whenever I install a new ROM.. Just checking the threads trying to find something.

That's why desire is good, no trackball sticking out! Nice and small button with optical tracking ;-)
Can it be used like the N1 trackball for missed calls and sms??
Blinking lights I mean
Just to answer a couple of questions:
1) There is no notification light on the optical trackpad.
2) I've tried this with the Nesoid emulator and while it works, it's pretty terrible to use for directional control, but maybe OK for any games that require 'swiping' motions.

Hi There,
It does support Multitouch, but it is pretty fiddly, I think because the image of the onscreen d-pad and buttons to not line up exactly on the Desire with Nesoid. I have had more luck with the multitouch using Snesoid, which feels very good! (i.e, in Super Mario All-Stars I can run and jump at the same time)

[Q] a virtual touchpad/trackball for evo? for on-screen navigation

is there any on-screen virtual touchpad or trackball that would permanently dock at the bottom of the screen that would move a 'mouse' like pointer or selection area on-screen? with the evo having just a large touch screen, there's no way to 'highlight' things without just pressing it with your finger. Does this make sense?
the touch input htc keyboard has those 4 navigation arrows across the bottom of the keyboard, which i'd love to port to swype too, but the only way to use them is to open the full keyboard, which covers too much of the screen if you aren't typing something.
BTW - did everyone know if you hold down(long press) the menu button, you can toggle the keyboard anywhere you are, not just a text-input box? love it
you should really try searching the forums, there is already a thread on this idea.

that, I believe, is actually not what he's talking about. I believe you are looking for something along the lines of Virtual Trackball, version 1.2 is out
NOTE: i believe it requires ROOT, so make sure you're rooted.

If you go all the way through the thread, it is about Virtual Trackball by the end of it. In the end, they wanted Virtual Trackball to use the touch sensitive area on the search button. The developer never really got back to them.
But the OP seems to want something like the CM6 mouse support without actually needing to use a mouse. Admittedly, this would be kind of cool. Ultimately though, you'd be using a portion of the touch input to control a mouse that is simulating using your finger. It's a little redundant seeming.

Thats what I use, and initially, it felt strange but now its like a normal controller. I used WASZ for the d pad. In GBA, I use JK for a and b, in genesis its HJK and in psx4droid I use IJKM for triangle, square, circle, cross. I also use Q and O for L1/R1 respectively.
Initially, you will keep mispressing buttons, but as you keep playing, it will become second nature.

That was my first thought too.
I too would like something to make my volume buttons a shutter button when the camera is activated. Self pics are a nightmare when you have to try to push the screen when it's turned away from you. I'm rooted running Chogardjr v3.12 on an Evo 4G if it matters.

Not everyone on this board acts like a two year old in the real world.
I actually use the phone to log track sessions on a dashboard mount in my car. The video screen always on can be distracting.
The shutter button is a no brainer. The touch screen button is a PITA to use since you have to hold the camera a certain way to take any picture.
Thanks for your lack of help, Ill search around for some apps.
