[Q] i317 missing features - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

On a hardware level, what options are missing on the i317? Wikipedia, AT&T's Site, and other searches all say different things. I'm considering this as my next phone, though I'm wondering if it will have the FM tuner, or NFC.
Also, I am coming from an atrix 4g. It has a hardware bootloader, and the only way to unlock the bootloader was to burn a fuse on the motherboard of the phone, (or so that is how it has been described to me) what is the bootloader like for the note2?
and finally are there any good custom roms for the note2? I really like my cyanogenmod.
My second choice for my next phone would probably the S3. Any thoughts from other owners?

The note has nfc, but no fm radio. The battery is amazing. The bootloader is unlocked takes about 3 min to root install cwm and flash a custom rom. There is a wip cyanogen mod, but you will loose all the special features like the s-pen. There are some custom roms that are nice and speedy and based off touchwiz so you can keep all the custom features.

I just made the switch about a week ago and I love the phone! I also made the switch from the Atrix 4G the only thing I'm aware of that is missing is the Multi-Window feature. Although I've rooted my phone I haven't found the courage to load a rom, because the stock seems pretty flawless and none of the roms seem stable enough to load onto this beast of a phone!

As already stated, the phone comes with NFC, but no FM tuner.
I've been using Samsung phones ever since the Captivate, and all I can say is flashing and modding these phones are extremely easy.
Lastly, if you are considering the S3, make sure you get the international version (N7100 or N7105).

FMRadio from n7100 or spiritfm?

Has anyone tried to get the FM Radio working via the spiritFM app or simply by copying the proper files from an N7100 firmware?
I've attached the FMRadio.apk from my own deodex'd n7100. It might need other files.. if so, let me know. (You could also just pop over the to international NoteII dev forum and download one of the many CWM installable firmware posts there and pull whichever files needed from the .zip archive.
(The same might even be possible for the multi-view stuff)
Take care
Gary
When I go to install it, it starts to try but then fails and says application not installed.
I do have the setting ticked to allow applications from non-market sources to be installed. I just installed the Amazon app store so I know it's letting me install downloaded apks.
Check the following thread for a free download of spiritFM. Try to configure it as an i9300 (read the related parts of the OP, etc) to get it going.
The idea here is just to see if everything hardware-wise is working for the FM radio. If so, it shouldn't be TOO difficult to get the software parts going.

Anyone making any progress here? I'm eager to know if the hardware is present on the device. I'm not hopeful though since it wasn't on the GSIII.

Well, the US variants of the SGS3 were actually a completely different phone than the international variants. With the Note2, the US variants are supposedly identical in hardware to the international N7105. (international Note2 with LTE)
What I don't understand is... why hasn't anyone actually tried spiritFM and posted back their results?

while the differences are much less than the gs3, I don't think they are the same phone. The main difference is in the radios. we won't know for sure until we start seeing teardowns of the us versions. That said, i totally agree. why hasn't anyone tried this?!?!?! whoever has a T-Mobile note, please do this!!!!!
When i flashed N7100 Rom into my T889 phone, i remember i tried the FM radio App and it didn't work. i open the FmRadio app it asked me to plug my headphones to use it as an antenna and when i plugged in my headphone and try to turn it on it didn't do anything...
so i guess there is hardware difference between N7100 and T899.
You're going to need the lib.so files that drive the apk.
I think that may be all, but it's been so long since I had a phone with a fm radio that wasn't utilized by the stock rom that I can't even remember which phone or was though it may have been the Nexus One. I remember for sure that the original Motorola cliq was able to get the fm radio functional but that wasn't an xda forum. I Reckon if anyone has the extra time that a little searching here at xda would shed light on whether more is needed than the apk and the libs.
I know for sure we need a driver though ; p
still no one giving this a try?
I'll definitely try this when my T-Mobile Note II comes in since I would love to have FM radio. I agree that SGS III shouldn't be proof that this won't work since the hardware this time around in our variants is much closer to the international version. It's very possible the hardware is there and the software is disabling it or not accessing it at all. Would these methods require root access? I'm ok with sideloading apps and dumping library files where they need to go. I'd prefer not to root since that would prevent other things from working like ISIS (I'm from Austin) and getting official updates.
I wanted to bump this and ask if anyone has had any luck with this. I had tried the suggested stuff the thread was started on to no avail.
According to samsung the firmware and hardware are present on the phone. However I believe we are missing the library files for accessing it. If anyone has an international note they can extract them from they should work in theory.
Sent from my SGH-T889
I thought the FM Radio not present on the SGH-T889. Or am I missing something?
There's no FM radio hardware AFAIK, and certainly no software from Samsung for it in all the LTE Note 2 variants. The N7100 has a completely different radio chip than its LTE brethren; Intel vs Qualcomm.
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_Note_II#Communication_processor
Works
Since no one has posted a straight forward answer, yes, I've tried and Spirit FM (free) works on the international version (N7100).

Well we knew that much... The whole initial question was whether it worked on the T-Mobile USA version. Since it doesn't have it embedded in the chip... It doesn't work. No biggie for me since FM blows anyways. I guess it could come in handy in a no data area or emergency...

[Q] Non-carrier firmware vs carrier firmware

Hello all,
I'm just wondering, do you guys notice or know of any real difference b/t the unlocked/non-carrier firmware that's out there and the carrier-specific firmware from T-Mobile for the M8? Is one considered better than the other?
Please share your thoughts with us!
Thank You,

I know my experience with the M7 (yes i know its an M8 forum but still somewhat relevant) is Yes, the carrier firmware was better.
I had a Stock TMO branded M7. I did the full conversion to make it a GPe unit. It was nice but i had some signal issues. It was better with the TMO radios but ultimately i put it back to stock TMO and for me i got the best results like that.

No I think the M7 experience is definitely still relevant!
Ok, you're the first one so far here to say that. So the radios change based on the firmware? Why is that? I mean, why would the radios be affected by the firmware? Seems to me it'd be better to leave the radios alone and let them remain how they came.
My previous OTA was from T-Mobile, but in order to get updated ViperOne M8, I had to get the firmware for 2.22 and T-Mo wasn't deploying it. They apparently just approved it on the 18th, but as u prob read above, I'm not even sure if they've deployed it, and what it contains. I seem to have as much signal quality as before. I just wish they'd have VoLTE deployed for the M8s. That would be great.
RockStar2005
I have been with T-Mobile less then 2 years. Prior to that i was with sprint over 10 years. I got most of my "radio" experience flashing different radios for the Samsung GS2.
That device was super finikey when it came to radios. I also found at the time that 3 different network vendors set up most of the CDMA network in the USA for Sprint. So for me having a specific radio work well meant that same one might not work so well up north. Samsung was also known to not have very good hardware / antennas (when i say radios i am referring to the firmware for the specific device.) So while my devices hardware stayed the same Samsung was making software tweaks during each revision of software.
But to keep it simple, Yes, different versions of radios can work differently in each device. Thats even with stock radios. Then if you add stuff like a GPe radio to a stock unit, or what i had with my M7 using a GPe ROM with a TMO radio. It always pains me to see people who post about using carrier A phone unlocked with carrier B network. Those people will never get the most out of their hardware network wise because carrier B has worked with the manufacturer to make sure their device is created to be specific to their network. Sure an unlocked will work but not at 100% efficiency. It could be a hardware limitation, could be some software that is baked into the ROM to make it work better, or even as simple as TMO baking in WiFi calling with their network.
I mean look what happened to the Note 3 for TMO. Originally it shipped with LTE not even enabled. The hardware was there then BAM, with an OTA LTE was enabled. Flash forward to the last few months, 2 separate updates for VoLTE. Those are radios updates that are specific to the hardware in the Note 3.
Hopefully someone else can chime in as well. Id hate to think im the only one.
Six,
No you explained that rather well! My cousin has the Note 3 so I know what u said about the last part (on VoLTE) is def true. I wish HTC would hurry the F up and give us M8 ppl VoLTE. Would be nice. And make it available everywhere, not just major cities (it's avail in Chicago, but I live 25-30 min away).
I have a buddy who works for U.S. Cellular corporate, and he said the same thing. Unlocked phones, esp ones sold by one carrier but used on another's network, don't work AS well as when the phone is made for your carrier's network. International phones at least I believe work fine if released OFFICIALLY in the U.S. (i.e., Sony's Xperia Z2, which is ONLY avail that way in the U.S.), because they've been tested on ALL carrier networks/bands, but that's diff than using say a Sprint phone on T-Mobile's network, I believe. (Or using a phone that wasn't approved for all the major U.S. carriers.)
So far you're the only who seems pro-carrier firmware/OTAs, but that's ok. That's why I started this thread, so I can get all sides of the story. But if you read the previous posts, the other posters make a compelling argument that's pro-noncarrier. It sounds like in my situation I'm fine, b/c I'm pretty sure the int't M8 was tested on T-Mo's bands already. The firmware would just go along with that same data, so I don't think I'm having any loss of quality. Now if I carrier-unlocked my phone and tried it on Sprint or Verizon, or even AT&T......... then I would expect a loss of quality at some level.
Thanks,

Agreed. I see merits in both custom roms, stock roms, GPe Roms and Cyanogen.
Back in the GS2 days i was a big fan of using some of those custom ROMS guys would cook up. It fixed a lot of issues with Android.
But for ME, since 4.2.2 and up, i have been happy with stock ROMs.
In fact i almost always ran custom roms on my older devices and only recently started to leave them stock.
The last thing was when TMO gave me 3 GB free tethering, that was the last thing i might have rooted for.
My note 3 is stock, my M8 is still stock. and my back up M7 is stock (after putting GPe on it for a few weeks and testing stuff out).
I for one use my M8 as my daily phone and my Note 3 as my back up / game device.
For example, today at lunch i had local news streaming on my M8 while my Note 3 was tethered to my M8. On my Note 3 i was playing a few games while i waited for my food then answered a few emails and chatted with a friend on Hangouts.
With TMOs recent 4.4.3 update my M8 seems to run better then before and i feel im getting better battery life out of it.
Cant wait for my Note 3 to get 4.4.3 or 4.4.4. Also really looking forward to Android L on both of the units.
The way i look at it is what are YOUR pros and cons. LOL.

My "pros and cons" list involves having all pros and NO cons! lol
I think I'll prob just wait for the T-Mo OTAs from now on, but then again, b/c I have ViperOne, I won't know when they get deployed unless I constantly revert back to stock. Ughh! I guess so far I haven't really noticed a difference in signal and call quality since installing a non-carrier firmware, though it's only been like not even 2 weeks yet since I did it.
That's cool though that you're so happy with it. Perhaps your posts are an indication that T-Mobile has gotten better with their overall quality, and so that's something to look forward to for when I do go back to stock (whenever that is lol).
Thank You,
RockStar2005
Most people make a big deal about carrier OTAs. So you really dont need to revert back to check for them. As long as your active on the boards you will know when a device gets an OTA.
I failed to mention that part of why im happy with stock is because devices are now getting to the point where they are so fast that having bloat ware on them doesnt noticeably slow down the devices like they used to. At least i dont notice it. Pluse with 4.2.2 they allow you to "disable" most apps you dont want to use. So thats another plus.
Back in the day i used to root and do the custom ROM for extra battery life, or tethering, or to make the device snappier.
I honestly would have thought that someone else might have chimed in by now and added their 2 cents.

Six,
Yeah, that's true. Or I can check on T-Mobile's update site, though there may still be some delay b/c of how they deploy OTAs: http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-10366
I've noticed that too, and before I got ViperOne and also Titanium Backup, I was disabling several apps too. Though I prefer to just uninstall them.

Six,
I talked to one of the ppl at Team Venom, and he said he has T-Mobile and recommends just taking T-Mobile's firmware updates for better cell reception. I'll do that from now on. But for now, if anyone is interested, I have here a link to the latest radio image file for the M8 (as of 8/27). Just download and "install flash" in TWRP.
And if you're rooted and want to get rid of the "red splash" screen during boot-up, try flashing the attached mod! :victory:

So... My question now.. I'm one of those buy vzw m8 take over to T-Mobile. I'm running viper 2.3. It runs great. But vzw never updated to newest firmware.so my question I guess is... Can I flash a T-Mobile radio or firmware to my vzw phone? I kinda know the answer, but I'd rather ask. So if I can.. that'll be great!

I know on the M7 that would brick the unit.
The CDMA and GSM units had different hardware and flashing any GSM ROM into a CDMA unit bricked them.
I want to say the same holds for the M8.
Can someone else confirm that for me?

I'm on verizon's network, and I was wondering where the roms are for this phone? I have a gs4 (mdk version), and If I buy this phone I will root it. After is rooted, is the bootloader unlocked? This phone has been out for a while, so there should be alot of roms for it. Thanks

hello my friend. this phone as locked bootloader(only t-mobile doesnt),if u root your phone u wont unlock it just root.
about roms they start shownig up as soon someone manage to unlock the bootloader install the custom recovery and so on.
What the poster before me said is true. However, even the T-Mobile ROM section is pretty empty. The ROMS we DO have are all dying as well. As in, scarce or no updates.
If you are buying the phone, just buy it for what it is. I'm not keeping my hopes up that the bootloader would be unlocked and even if it is all or most of the devs would have moved on to other devices. As a stock phone which is just rooted, it is a fine device. big nice screen in a small-ish form factor. I use it easily with one hand and my hands are average size. Battery life is also great for me, I usually get 4-5 hours of on screen time with varying levels of usage. It also comes with some nice software features such as the dual app on a screen thingy . The camera is also good (to me) it really does focus faster than any other phone I have before. On top of all that it is one of the more unique looking devices out there.
It is a great phone. I am running it without any root for one and a half week. Superb camera, great display and satisfying performance. Just someone said above me, use it for what it is.
Thanks for the info. What the hell is up with all the locked bootloaders? I know it has to do with security, but come on. Anyway, thanks again.
I bought the note 3 before I bought this phone I have. It was just to big for my hands. It was a two handed phone for me. I had it for two weeks, then got the gs4. Thanks for the info

[Q] What use is a free HTC 1 M8?

But seriously, I have a year-old review unit here and I don't use Sprint personally. So I can use it to play with Android distros, or as a very small tablet, or make it into a remote-control for my TV. What's the most amusement one can get from an off-the-air M8?
And is the Harmon-Kardon branding just advertising, or does it actually have better sound than other phones?

You can use it as a music player too. It's one of the best Android music phone.
Surely it would be well worth unlocking the phone, where else are you going to get such a top spec device for the small price of an unlock?
I paid a ton of money for this phone 12 months ago and it is still one of the best on the market.
@crazykas
Not s-off yet. I haven't found a method other than sunshine which is $25 and, from what I read, has a spotty reputation. A question: If I got it s-off, instead of that sim unlock (that article is in my list for the m8) should I change the CIM and (DIM?) so it thinks it's an ATT Developer phone? Would that let it use ATT?
EDIT: Now that I re-read this, the $25 isn't that much, and the worst that can happen is that I'm left with a brick that I didn't pay for! But do you know of any self S-off method?

A year later they're just dust-gatherers.
I'm pretty happy with my current Galaxy S4, but it's great having a phone that I can load anything on to and not worry that if I brick it I'll be left without a phone or lose a couple of hundred dollars. For example, installing assorted versions of TWRP on this particular phone makes it hang permanently, power and display on, entering recovery. But it works with Clockwork Mod. Now I'm playing with CyanogenMod for the first time.

If you're using an S4, IMHO, you must upgrade to this phone. It's plenty fast (I bet miles better in performance than S4) for 2015. Only thing you'll miss is the pretty cool camera in your current phone.
Thanks for the links.
Smelly feet! SunShine doesn't work with CyanogenMod; it asks for a stock rom. Fortunately, lots of stocks to choose from. Back to stock, run Sunshine, S-OFF, back to Cyanogen. Here goes...
EDIT: Well, I gave up. I've flashed four different ROMs and had startup hang at four different places. CyanogenMod works fine. Since I can't get back to stock (some idiot forgot to do a backup before flashing Cyanogen, no excuse, I've been in this business for decades) and Sunshine won't run under Cyanogen, no S-off.
If anyone can point me to a back-to-stock or a ROM that I can load with Clockwork or RUU, it would make me happy. I've got the Harmon Kardon Sprint model, which may be a problem. I've tried roms from Bad Seed, the ND8_STOCK_DEODEXED_ROOTED rom, Renovate_5.0, and cm-11-20141112-SNAPSHOT-M12-m8 . I got so frustrated that I didn't keep page links for these, which I know I should put for reference. The only reason I want to go back to stock is that Sunshine seems to require it. I'm awfully glad that, as I've posted before, this is a don't-care device.
EDIT TWO: Anyone sick of my train-of-thought posting process can leave now. I left Renovate in its stuck mode for a while, and half an hour later it was on. Hurrah! Now to try Sunshine...
Update - it needed a recent RUU from HTC. Year-old firmware was slow with current ROMs and not compatible with TWRP at all. Recent RUU, good behavior. It's s-off, and I'll go for sim unlock tomorrow.

[Q] Am I overlooking things...?

Hey guys, I have a Sprint, SM-T807P (10.5" LTE/Snapdragon) version of the Tab S and I must say that I have been nothing short of impressed since the day I purchased it back in December. However, the one (major) downfall is that it seems 1 in 1000 Tab S owners actually have the 807P, which appears to be resulting in a virtual non-existent world of ROM's/custom kernels etc.
I was HOPING I am either over looking something, looking in the wrong location, or not aware of which other models may be compatible with mine.
I just Odin'd from DUH's KK ROM, to stock OE3 Lollipop, and was hoping to get re-rooted/CWR or TWRP installed and find myself a slick little ROM to install.
Is there any hope? lol Thanks in advance, ladies and gents!
Adding on to this. I bought the SM-T807P used (because it was a great deal) and I am only interested in running it through wifi. I dont need the LTE capability.
Somewhere I heard that some other Snapdragon roms will work, I'll just loose LTE functionality ... which is fine by me.
Does anyone have a list or can point me in the right direction for other roms that would work in wifi mode?
Or tell me which snapdragon roms will work?
It's already rooted and TWRP is installed. I'm just lacking in roms.
Thanks!

I'm sure @duh will gladly build an updated Rom for you guys if enough of you request it.
Maybe if you have enough knowledge you can build one for yourself and the other Sprint owners?

Did you ever receive any answers on this? I am in the same boat, I only have a gig or two of data on my Tab S, but have unlimited data on my Note 4, that's rooted+ROM'd, including the hotspot mod. So I could do without the LTE as well...
What exactly is it you are all expecting from a custom rom?
Practically all custom roms are simply debloated stock roms with maybe the odd extra thrown in.
There is nothing magic in a stock custom rom that you can't do yourself.

What I really want for my sweet little device is for someone to port over Cyanogenmod. Which is what I have been using for year.
cm is bad on tab s just prefer pac rom over it
