[Q] SD Card Woes - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello everyone!
Last Christmas I got the 64gb SDXC Sandisk card which I have been looking forward to getting for quite some time.
I have a d2att running CM10.0 Stable so I quickly formatted that sucker to FAT32.
I put some of my HD videos on it and I was on my merry way.
A couple of days ago I was running low on internal storage, so I decided to move my music over to the roomy SD card. I took the SD card out of the phone and loaded it from my nicely tagged files from my external HD.
I put it back in the phone and it took a while for MediaScanner to do it's thing, understandable I just dropped around 10GB of music on top of it, no big deal.
After around 10-15 min of searching, the phone finally sped up and I fired up Google Music. What I found was half my music was tagged as "Unknown Artist" or not even showing up. Maybe one or two albums were working okay.
I was curious and tried multiple combinations of resetting the Media data and Google Music data in an attempt to get it to play nice.
No such luck however.
Out of curiosity I installed PowerAmp and had it scan my library, to my surprise all my music was properly tagged and sorted as it should after a long scanning session.
In addition to all of this every few start-ups I get the same lag from MediaScanner attempting to go through my SD card. It is very frustrating as I have to wait 10-15 min for my phone to be useful.
So overall I guess I'm really trying to find out why the MediaScanner lag is occurring here and there as well as to why it cannot find my music properly. Ideas or thoughts?

Rescanning sd card for newly added music.

I did some searching on here and Google and I am coming up empty. I have added a bunch of new music to the sd card, but cannot get the media player to see it. Ive spent 3 days messing with this and I am just a bit frustrated.
Here is background.
I use both Fresh and DC roms. This issue is in both.
I have unmounted sd card
I have rebooted phone
I can access and play files using astro.
I have installed app after app that claim to refresh with no avail.
I have cleared the music play in app manager.
A wipe data is the only way to get this music to show. This now is my only option, but I nandroid back as I dont want to restart from scratch.
Does anyone have or know of a working way to refresh the damn library.
Market, "ScanMedia"

Used it and all it does is scan. Will not finish. It did add pictures to gallery, but nothing for the music. That was 8+ hours of scanning.
Sometimes it does that to me too... i fix that by opening HTC Music, going to the list of playlists (artists, albums, songs, whatever... i just happen to use playlists), then long press home button to switch to ScanMedia and initiate media scan.
Then switch back to HTC Music, and if you see a rotating animation (aka, loading animation) on top right - it worked. Give it few mins and it'll update your music library. Takes no more than 2 mins on my 16gb card

Sdrescan in market
Last night I pulled the whole music file off the sd card, cleared music player cache and verified that nothing showed up. This worked as music player could find nothing. I then replaced the entire 3.5gig music folder to the sd card and cleared cache. Rebooted phone and only 83 songs showed up in the player. (I have 800+ in the folder). Used SD rescan, Scanmedia, and music scanner apps. I now have 100 songs showing up and thats it. Why will Android NOT see all the music or at least display it all. If I copy the same folder to my fuze player, everything shows up. I even forced stop the DRM protection in case that was the hang up. My son confirmed that the same thing is happening on his hero. Am I SOL to expect this device to be used as a media hub?
I've been having this problem for awhile too. Always stuck at 100 songs. Subbed for possible solutions.

Black screen when playing video back

A friends DHD is just displaying a black screen when trying to watch recently recorded video from the phone. Anyone else had this before?
I had the same problem, after a bit googling it turned out to be caused by the memory card being not up to the task. To record HD video the card has to be class 6 or above but the card supplied by htc is only class 2 so it can't read/write fast enough.
So would ensuring the videos are local and not on the card help?
Normally it isn't related to the sdcard. Have you tried to play your video on a PC?
Sent out of my Free Candy Van.
I bellieve too that isn't the sd card. I have a 16gb class 4 but i don't have problems with HD Videos, i shoot and watch everything just fine.
I bellieve that maybe it's a bug or even worst a hardware proble. I have a similar problem with media, i get random errors and denies to play videos or music transfered from my pc.
is it not working both landscape and portrait?
Afaik it happens regardless,im going to see her tomorrow and take a look at the phone, may take a backup and factory reset.
I just can't imagine what's causing it.
If you can get a memory card (ideally class 6 or above but you could try class 4) try it. I contacted HTC and they thought it was a software fault but I tried a new card (class 10) and I've had no problems in the 6 months since then. I was even getting problems playing high quality on YouTube it was getting so bad.

Well I checked the uptime of her phone since she said it was really slow and struggling it was a whopping 979 hours!!
switched off and tested her card in my phone. shocked to find mine was class 4 btw.
anyway her vids played back perfect on my GS2. recorded ok too.
videos recorded to my card on her DHD too.
next put her card back in the DHD and begun recording then played it back fine.
started to play back her older vids now perfectly.
Seemed to be down to the fact it was struggling being on non stop for so many hours and maybe taking out the card and popping back in helped.
backed up all her vids and pics onto a mem stick just in case. There I was thinking Id be factory resetting her phone and starting over!

Media Scanning in Jellybean Roms

Since I have not posted enough times I couldn't post this in development section where it belongs. I have been trying to use Jellybean ROMs since they became available but always reverted back to Blazer ROM because of the media scanning bug. This is where media scanner fails to find any media on both SD cards, in other words gallery and the default music player fails to load any of the media. I tried everything that was suggested on these forums and could not figure it out. I found all .nomedia files and deleted them, updated rom manager, cleared the media cache, etc.
One of the solutions was to copy everything on the sd cards over to my computer, format the SD cards then copy everything back. This did not work the first time I did it. The second time I tried it I forgot to copy over my DCIM folder to the main SD card on my phone. I turned on my phone and after a reboot all of my media was there. I use Jetaudio for my music and I was finally able to to use it. I then realized that I had forgotten to copy my DCIM folder in particular the Camera folder with my more than 1,000 pictures and videos. I then went to check my media and it was still there but none of my new pictures where showing up. So I went into Apps settings and cleared my media, still nothing, so I rebooted. Now all of my media including my music in jetaudio was gone. So I went ahead and deleted my Camera folder with all my pictures, and all of my media came back after a reboot. To make a long story short something in my Camera folder was stopping the media scanner from functioning properly, I have yet to figure out what it is. But maybe with the help of some of the people here we can figure it out. I am currently happy having all of my music and none of my pictures. I can always look at them on my computer if I get nostalgic.
I am currently running Paranoid Android 2.16 and I think that the fact that Media Scanner is no longer stuck allows my phone to Sleep. I was previously loosing 10% battery life per hour getting about 5hrs battery with moderate to heavy use. I now get 10+ hours battery life with moderate to heavy use and loose about 1% per hour.
If anyone can make suggestions as to what files might be causing media scanner to hang. I would appreciate the feedback. It would be nice to have my pictures back on my phone but I can live without them.
By the way all new pictures i take show up just fine and cause no problems. I have also added new music and this shows up just fine as well.

Have you tried copying just the pictures in the DCIM folder to the Camera Folder and not the entire folder? Are there any weird files that are not pictures or videos in your DCIM folder? I'm on Paranoid Android 2.16 also but I haven't copied over any old pictures to my phone and have not experienced this issue myself. I did have an issue with my music files not showing up in my music players on my old Epic 4G (the one with the keyboard) and when I first transferred my music files onto my external SD card. Getting PowerAmp fixed that issue and I also a Rescan SD app occasionally if needed. I haven't really needed to use it after I got both my SD cards all setup on the phone. Maybe try using a Rescan SD app?

[CM14]Spotify freezing and crashing phone

Hey Guys, newbie here!
I've been using CM13 for a while now. Recently my Spotify app started freezing and crashing my phone when accessing my 64GB MicroSD card. I can not reproduce this however since it seems to happen randomly. But when Spotif or my SD card are uninstalled i do not get these freezes.
I did a clean install of the most recent CM13 Nightly and the Experimental CM14 release, which did not yield any results other than corrupting my data file system. After fixing this, I now run in the Experimental CM14 without Spotify.
If you have ans Idea I would really appreciate the help from you guys.
*Edit* This is about the LG G3 D855 which I am using with a 64GB Sandisk MicroSD card.

Wow, reading that post, it's almost as if I posted it myself.
I have similar issues as you. But I'm using stock. I thought it was something wrong with my new 128gb microsd. I even gotten a new battery just in case, as I see other people pointing to these random issue to battery issue.
Until I realized Spotify somewhat actively caches stuff on my microsd card, plus the earlier issue of using network data in the background even when not actively in use (killed my wife's data usage for that month).
Issues I've seen are phone not waking up from black screen (or taking a really really long time to wake up), issue playing the next song with my regular mp3 player with songs stored on microsd, spotify freezing, bluetooth freeze on connect, etc.
Just recently I've just tried to clear all data/cache on the spotify app (took a long time, I clicked the button and went to sleep). Then as soon as I'm back on spotify, I go to settings and tell it to cache on phone sd instead of external. So far my phone seem to be running better. Will have to wait a few more days to see how it goes. Hope this helps (for myself as well : ) )

constantly scanning sd card

Hi all!
I have always kept my music library on internal storage but I recently got a large sd card so I don't have to copy music back again every time I reset the phone. I am currently running stock Pie with June update, no root, bootloader locked.
Since I have put my music library on the sd card (30gb of music on a 64gb card) everytime I reboot or wake up the phone, I got a notification of "scanning sd card". And the music library in several players I have tried (pulsar, shuttle, musicolet) is empty and slowly repopulates.
When I first used the card I put it into the phone and formatted it as portable storage, then copied music in it.
I thought i was the only one with this problem. It happened after the PIE update. It was ok when i was on OREO. The same thing happened to my note 5 pro after the PIE update. It seems this is related to PIE rom, slowly remounting the sd card ofter boot. I changed a few cards before thinking it was the card problem. Hoping the devs would solve this problem with the next update.
Give PowerAmp a try, it's something, and works even after reboot

With the smaller sd card and music library on the phone storage I didn't have this problem, did you?

I'll give it a try, thx
EDIT: the same problem persists also with Poweramp.

I used memory card since i bought the phone, it's a 64 gb card. Never had any problem when i was on oreo. The music from internal storage seems to have no problem. Tried a few cards and seems like the 32 gb card loads faster. The 64 gb and 128 gb loads slowly and these are high speed read/wirte cards. Also if i didn't use the player after a few days i have to rescan the library again for the music to load. The same goes to some stuff on gallery too. Contents from memory card went blank and only viewable after a while.
I've also same issue on two individual A2 lite with 32gb SD cards (1x samsung & 1x intenso).
I expect that the SD card is unmounted when the device goes into sleep mode. If phone wakes up again the card will be mounted again.

I can also confirm this behavior.
May its possible to get some details with MatLog (during wakeup & sleep). But I'm not able to do this, cause my phone is not rooted.
I have this problem only with the music on sd. Images in the gallery show up correctly.
I have searched for this issue, and it seems a lot of people experienced it also with older android versions and phones. Someone fixed it with an app called Wakelock, others just changed their sd card or lived with it.
Guess i'll just live with it until this phone fails me. This problem doesn't really annoy me much. It's still pretty much a great phone for its price.
For me it's very frustrating, gallery does not work correct if i use it direct after unlock and also camera app will crash if used direct out of lockscreen and phone was in deep-spleep before (target directory is set do SD card). Sometimes (1-2%) if i wake up the phone the card is not mounted properly. Phone reports card is damaged, after reboot everything is fine again.
