Sense 4.0 / HTC One Camera app - pre-release video walkthrough

Hi Everyone,
I’m new to XDA, so I thought I’d try to make my first post as helpful as I can (I love the noob video on the registration page by the way! )
Anyway…
I was recently taking part in an online discussion with some Android beginners, and a really big topic for them was the new camera app in Sense 4.0 / upcoming HTC One series. Due to the varying knowledge levels of the people and the difficulty of typing out so many replies, I offered to create a video to (attempt to) address many of their questions.
So, with the aid of the S4X ROM from the Virtuous team, I put together a 24 minute video that goes through the included pre-release version of the camera app in Sense 4.0 from start to finish.
Please note that I was asked to go through each and every one of the menu options, while also having to add a walkthrough of the updated panorama feature and include explanations of stuff like ISO etc. For that reason, some of you may find that the video drags on a bit (oh, and I’m no Spielberg either ).
Still, if it helps a small handful of people, it was worth the effort.
HTC One Camera app - pre-release video walkthrough
Cheers,
Bugsy.

I posted a link to your vid in the sample images thread as they are discussing the topic of interface videos there at the moment. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1543802
Hmm, there was something in your video that got me thinking.
You pointed out that an f2.0 camera lens allows twice as much light into the camera than an f2.8 lens would (so 100% more light).
This reminded me that HTC stated that the One X lets in 44% more light than the previous model. Does anyone know which previous model HTC were refering to? I'm guessing it's not the Sensation, because I doubt that has an f2.3 (ish?) lens
Sensation is f2.4, One X is f2.0

In relation to an F2.8 lens, 44% more light does equate to F2.4. Having said that, I can't say that I've ever seen any documentation where HTC have stated that the Sensation has an F2.4 lens. Images don't appear to contain this info embedded in their EXIF data either.
@EddyOS Would you mind telling me how you found this info?

my One X review

Hello all, I know traditionally i only review samsung devices as a samsung mobiler i've decided to branch out a bit and share the love. So here's my review on the One x. Let me know what you think, i'm always taking your comments on board and trying to make my content better.
Out of interest it was filmed on a canon Eos 1100D rather than my galaxy s2 for a change. Hopefully you can tell the difference
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8JwiCQlxhg&feature=youtu.be
and a video of the two flavours of ICS on the galaxy nexus and the one X
http://youtu.be/V4Gidj5dEic
I also took some photos from different angles of the one x...find them at my blog here:
http://staceysamsungmobiler.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/htc-one-x.html
Here's a quick comparison of the screen on the Galaxy Nexus vs HTC one x. Which do you prefer?

Nice review Stacey!
I thought Mobilers always had access to the Samsung devices prior to general public. I clearly remember Dom and you had the SGS2 long (weeks/days) before the general public. Both of you guys had a popular thread before release of the SGS2 during last April/May.
Hey, PM me a photo of the SGS3 and the specs list...Trust me, I won't tell anyone!
Good reviews there and i love your english. Hope i will talk like that someday.
One thing to the Multitask. The thing you reviewed on the One X as Taskmanager ist the taskmanager. Its just a graphic gimmik to show main threads and easily jump from one to another. Search on the device applist for Taskmanager and then you see your real tasks and up to 9 tasks at once.
I realy love my One X but i think all Sense gimmiks are just made to look good. Usability is just on 2nd rank. For much Sense widgets i use alternatives.
nice review
thank you

Ahhyes ! I found it. Please I'll add a note to the description of the video. Thanks for pointing it out
A good video, just one word of advice:
When you want to show something on the screen, dont move the phone closer to the camera, it makes the image blurry.
Best is to just keep it the way it is, so that the image stays sharp and then once you're editing the video zoom in digitally!
That'll make the screen more readable
Thanka for the feed back, seriously guys this all helps me for when I make my next . My next purchase is a proper tripod for my camera lol
also added a quick comparison of super amoled vs super ips LCD2...see 1st post for url

HTC One X's horrific video bitrate - why isn't it talked about? [FIXED?]

EDIT: This guy just made my day!! I just made a 47kbit video with this mod to stock camera.
NOW we can close this thread if mods so desire =) Thank you everyone!
So the bitrate on HTC One X's camera is hilariously low.
Videos that it spits out terrible when compared to SGSII which I gave to my wife. Video is just strobbing and wobbling due to it.
I understand that some people have very low quality standards and are satisfied with it, and there were some threads about it here.. but everything kinda died out.
I think hardware is capable of "normal" bitrate, since some market camera apps allow for it.. But can we make a hack to our camera to allow for high bitrates?
I mean, I love the phone.. but what's the point of 1080p video capability if it spits out 10k bitrate? None.

Maybe that should tell you something. Do you think starting a new thread when others are open is going to change anything? It's been acknowledged and is for now a fact of life. What are you expecting to happen? More ranting? A petition perhaps? For those that are desperately miserable with all or parts of the One X, why don't you sell it and get an SGS3? Repetitive ranting here isn't going to change anything no matter how many threads are opened.
Duplicate threads, especially those that are stated as duplicate threads, get closed.
I agree, 720p goes ok, but 1080p stutters a lil bit.. the bitrate should be higher..
tried it with some other apps, like lgCamcorder.. you can select the bitrate and you'll get smoother video (20mbps is enough)
---------- Post added at 10:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:57 PM ----------
maybe HTC will eventually bring out an update, wich increases the bitrate of the camera app (hope so)

Look at you all puffing and pissed off, lol. Angry little creature.
I opened this thread because it's a legitimate question about why aren't those threads getting an attention they deserve. Perhaps people are satisfied with choppy wobbly video that One X produces, perhaps a solution has been found that I'm not aware of. Hence, the thread.
And a related question - What are you expecting to happen by yelling at me for opening this thread? More ranting? For you, desperately miserable and super angry about this thread, why don't you see a shrink - perhaps they can fix you up.
Now unless you got something relevant to contribute to the problem at hand, go rant somewhere else.

I remember seeing someone who developed a higher bitrate camera for Sensation trying to make one for HOX.. but not sure what happened there - did he lose interest?
It just surprises me that this isn't discussed much more.
Search for the sense HQcamera mod - when i was running sense i got 29fps at 11-12,000kbps and uncompressed/4-5mb pics BIG difference compared to stock camera. CM9 - im getting 18-19,000kbps with 22fps indoors, will test outdoors later.
It's been talked about A LOT, especially by me in this thread.

Yes, I remember that one. Unfortunately, development of it for HOX was stopped, and existing beta mod freeezes up and FCs a lot. I just tried latest 1.3beta for Sense4 - that is indeed the case.
I contacted that developer with a PM, asking him what does he need to fully port that mod for HOX, with 25+mbits for 1080p. If he needs a financial incentive to compensate for his time and effort, I'll get a bounty going here.
So far, only Camera ICS works decently well, without crashing.
LGCamera is on and off kind of thing. About half the time it doesn't record anything - just black video feed.

I've actually been asked by a XDA member to do some more tests with the current ROM version. Will be doing 720p and 1080p some time soon Been raining these days, not enough sun ):
one thing to open a new thread to "talk about the problem" over and over, another with the purpose of actually solving / improving the issue.
imho i'm tired of discussing the "problem", it has been discussed already to death, that's why the search function is for.
as far as the "solution" goes, there's couple of threads/developments around which (WOW) are linked in the respective "problem" threads....
@OP: there's other alternatives to LgCamera that work well...care to search for them?

And your ranting adds what to the thread?
LGCamera doesn't work very well with HOX. Many times it can't get the feed from camera and won't work until reboot.
Camera ICS is a bad alternative as it's ugly, has adds and has resolution problems.
HDCamera mod doesn't work with HOX.
I did read those threads, that's why I opened this one.
Now, can we stop acting like a new thread costs millions of dollars and move on with the discussion? If you don't want to participate - don't participate. If all you want to do is complain - please avoid this thread kkthnx.

It still does =(
Just bought a paid version of Camera ICS - tested it out - stretched videos. Had to get a refund immediately.
So Camera ICS isn't a viable option, so is LGCamera that can't even connect to the camera about 80% of the time (tested on several ROMs).
Back at square one =(
45kbit+ video mod for stock camera!!! Seems to be working fine so far. Now I'm happy =)
Seems to be recording at 24fps only. Not smooth enough for me /:

there was a mod for 29FPS out there, wasn't it?
but bitrate still @ 10-12mbps
pick your poison, will take a genius to combine FPS and bitrate in one mod

Help me please with the camera!

Hello
I have bought Z5 premium, coming from Samsung s6 edge plus.
I would like to have some help ith the camera because really I can't understand well....The phone has a 23Mpx sensor for sony, but I've read in a lot of places that for real the sensor is 8mpx...
Now I want to understand how to shot the picture....how can I have the best results? Shoting in 8mpx or in 23? At the moment I'm not so happy about pictures, with S6 the pictures were better so I need to understand how to have better results....
Or it's better to use another app from the market?
Thank you so much if you can help me
I think the Samsung 6 has a better camera.

I don't understand how anyone will answer your question. You will have to just see which shot are best in superior auto (max 8mp) and manual (up to 23mp) depending on the type of shot you are trying to take.

In response to your question I'd say go to a phone shop an try the phones out for yourself unless someone in here has all the phones you're asking about and can give u a proper comparison.
I can tell for sure sg note 4 camera is better compared with z5p. With n4 camera you can burst shoot like mad, it is sharp, much more fast focusing, lighter.. where z5p is like a turtle. Also the post processing on z5p is too aggressive (which is probably the reason for this high dxo rating). In general sg n4,n5,s6,s6p,s6pe cam is much more better as a daily driver. But If you are dslr guru (and especially Nikon lover) u'll like more the z5p sensor.

Is the sony sensor really 23mpx? because it seems to me to be only 8.
Any suggestion about an app that can use all the 23 mpx if they are real?
It's impossible to go in a shop and make a comparison of the pictures...you must see the pics on a pc, to understand how good they are..

You won't get the full 23mpx in any other app than the stock Sony one.
It looks like Sony have locked the full sensor use to their own software or their is something these that the app developers haven't added to their apps.
And it is spamming when to u put the same post in multiple threads. One post, one thread is usually the correct way of asking a question on xda.
It is a real 23 mpx sensor. Just Sony use different api and all camera apps can't use the sensor as 23mpx.. (Do not ask me why, as usual noone knows)
But this one somehow can use the full power of the sensor at 23mpx
