[Q] Power question and opinion on ROM - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Just wanted to ask a quick question and get some opinions on roms if possible. The plan is to turn the wifes old evo into a dashboard for use when sim-racing (iracing) There is an app that you can download for android and the pc running iracing, that pulls data from the game and sends it to the phone over the local network.
First thing I am wondering. Is there any way at all to modify the phone to be able to run permanently wired, and without the battery? The plan is to mount the phone onto the steering wheel itself, just below the top of the rim, between the drivers thumbs. Id like to make the phone as light as possible to reduce inertia. I already plan to dis-assemble the phone and lose as much of the casing as I can.
Next is the rom. Any thoughts on what would be the best ROM for my situation? My only concerns are stability, ability to run the iracing dashboard app, ability to turn off screen rotation, ability to leave the screen on constantly. Battery life--- If I am unable to hard wire the phone, and have to run off the battery.
If this has been asked and I missed it in search, my bad.
thanks for any help

Im guessing by screensaver you mean screen turns off/dims?
Which ROM are you using and what screensaver app are you running?

yes i mean the dim/ blank screen
not sure about the rom but the phone is box standard no other apps have been put on it apart from this work application
screen is normally on, dims after few seconds manbe 1 minute, then goes blank (or like a sleep mode) however this sleep mode is where the problems start
thanks guys any help will be appreciated.

huh?? this thread doesnt say "htc touch hd" ?
how bout you provide a VALUABLE reply instead of this nonsense.
anyone got any update on this? i believe tomtom stops working also when this screen saver kicks in please help me out
as it is draining my battery life
How do your messages come through? Are they via sms? If so you can use an app called HD Tweak to wake device on new message. As for TT, perhaos invest in a car charger and then you don't have to worry about the battery.

I know this is not much of a solution but if you go to settings tab -- all settings (bottom left corner) and then in the middle tab (cant remember the name) --- power.
in here, go to the 3rd (last tab) and there you can disable the screen dimming and and sleep mode (first 2 options) by unchecking them
I am also using TomTom in the car at the moment and yes it does drain the battery...i think that asides from getting a car charger (they're cheap - just look for a in-car USB charger and use your USB cable), the best alternative is to let the screen dim, but NOT switch off. So let your screen turn off its backlight, and that should extend your battery life considerably.
Also, maybe try some of the solutions listed in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=483034
(i got that from a forum-wide search)
Good luck
ok guys bit more info
not worried about tomtom working whilst screen off that was just a example i gave, however my chaeffer work software does not ring/alert me when the screen is locked
now the software works via gprs and log's into my office server when they get the booking it gets logged into there system and routinly passed down to the drivers
i have a car charger but the problem is i am not in the car all the time, or near a mains supply only go to the car when booking come through
now is this a programming issue by the company i work for? if so, what could be done to correct this?
i am looking at some after market apps play around with them and see how i get on.
thanks you for all your help so far

use tilt recourses on PC?

I have a perfectly good Tilt2 running Energy ROM. But months ago I have upgraded. I tried to use my Tilt as a CarPC, but the screen was too hard to navigate while driving and I have been unable to figure a way to use the touch screen monitor as an input.
So now I'm building a real infotainment system. Got the PC, front end, and screen. But I was thinking that my neglected Tilt has GPS, constant connection to the internet, blue tooth, and accelerometer. Everything I want in my system except the compass and XM.
I was hoping someone figure out how to use the phone as a USB devise for all of these things. That way I could put it in the glove box on the dock.
the back end on the pc is windows, the front end is FreeICE (for now). I'm looking into Dash Command as well as a couple of other things.
You would be my personal hero if you can help me with this.

[Q] Turning a 3GSlide into a Kids Training Phone

I am seeking any advice on turning my old 3G slide into a phone for my kindergarten age child.
The first thing I am pondering is how to make this phone work best without a SIM card in it. When I boot it up currently it complains about not having a SIM - I am not really planning to put a SIM in this so... is there a way to make that work more smoothly?
Beyond that I am open to any advice or suggestions on making this phone enjoyable and stable for a child to use in learning to manage the touch screen and some basic kids apps.
It will be used for learning games, watching netflix/mpegs and listening to music. It will be hooked to the WiFi at home so I am thinking I could even put Skype on it for him.
I am a somewhat advanced android user - rooted my own phone and tablet, put custom roms on, know my way around the file system and am more than familiar with *NIX commands so ... lay it on me!
(I am also hoping to put a Thundercats 'theme' on it with a new boot screen, new wallpaper and thundercats sounds ... I imagine I can find advice on doing that elsewhere but again, any advice at all is much appreciated!)
This is a Christmas gift but ... wanted to get started early. Thanks again. :cyclops:
Looks like putting it on Airplane Mode keeps it from caring about the SIM card - I can even turn wireless on with Airplane Mode on. Awesome.

[Q] Power button not working in my nexus..

For some odd reason my power button is not working. The only way for me to look at things on a screen is to plug it into my charger. I took it to a local phone repair shop and they said it had something to do with the powerflex (something flex, not sure if its powerflex) connected to the motherboard?
I might be searching for the wrong name because I cant find any online stores or ebay selling them. Theres Alibaba but I don't trust that site, it has bad reviews...
any recommendations or similar experiences?
It might be cheaper to get a new phone but I like this one since its rooted to the new Jellybean and I am afraid of losing all my music, shows and stuff. Im not sure if it is on the phone or on the SD card
there is no removable sdcard on gnex.
you can always plug into computer tho and copy all the media over that you would like to save and then easily transfer that to a new device when you get one.
but.... since you are rooted, you can try using one of the Touch2Wake, sweep2wake apps. or see if your current kernel you are using has built in tap to wake and just enable it.
I think there are xposed modules also that give you greater control of the tap/gesture controlled waking of device. keep in mind that you might see some battery loss from these apps and such, but it shouldn't be THAT bad. and will allow you in the meantime to be able to turn device screen on just by tapping the screen or doing a gesture on screen.
I recommend that before you try new kernels or anything, that you backup, both nandroid backup AND backup any media you want to a computer(or get a flash drive and plug right into device using a USB OTG cable which can be found VERY cheap, like $5 online) and just copy over your media to that.
some have had similar issues before and only needed to take device apart(look in YouTube for Galaxy Nexus teardown for step by step) and just cleanih with rubbing alcohol/qtip where the power button makes it contact as there can become.buildup dirt there after a while of constant use.
GOOD.LUCK!
and REMEMBER! BACKUP before doing ANYTHING that might result in messing up something. I cannot stress that enough, and it will save you a lot of stress. if you've got pictures and video you've taken with device you want to save and need a place to backup just get Google+ app and turn on auto backup in settings. and set to backup all current now. you get 15gb free storage for full size pic/video backups with em. just nice peace of mind to know they will always be there in case something goes wrong
Thanks for good guide... :good:

would it be worth it rooting this phone?

Off the top of my head I'd like to be able to keep notifications coming in in the background but disable them from popping onto my screen when I'm doing s*** and I'd like my phone to automatically choose use the USB connection to my PC for internet tethering.
I'm sure there's other things I would like out of this phone only rooting will make possible and that you guys could sell me on, so let me know why, if at all I should root this phone and what would be the best ROM? I don't need anything special. Something minimal if you have anything in mind.
