Cracked my screen and have to return to T-mobile..... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

So I went to work today and forgot my phone was in my jacket pocket when I went to roll it up to stash on my bike(HD) and when I went to retrieve it I pulled it out with a cracked screen. The entire bottom 2/3 of the screen/touch screen does not work at all. I am able to boot into recovery/download mode to restore it back to stock via odin before I return it BUT will that also reset my flash counter as well so that my deeds go undetected?

Because it won't be a warranty claim, you have to file an insurance claim. I would dunk it in the sink full of water before sending it back until it is completely ruined and they can't boot it either....

It doesn't matter if its rooted for an insurance claim. Only when your doing a warranty exchange.

You could have just claimed it stolen, and you wouldn't be required to send anything back. It's the same deductible, so what's the difference?
You could have kept the other one for parts(camera, headphone jack, etc)

If you are going thru insurance don't worry about it.
That would be considered damage to the phone anyway.
Root is just not covered under regular warranty.
Not once have I seen a insurance claim issue for being rooted.

Awesome then I won't even worry about messing with it, ill just wipe it and send it as is.
On the other side of things I purchased an insurance policy through squaretrade for my phone. It is half the cost of T-mobiles insurance(11.99/month vs. 5.95/month) and offers the same if not better protection than T-mobile and the deductible is only $99 vs. the $175 I paid T-mobile/Asurion. The only downside from what I see is they try and repair your phone rather than replace it, which it says is guaranteed in 5 days or it's free! Hopefully I never need to use it or find out, but if I do I guess I can live without my phone for that long. Lol

I personally prefer repairs over replacement devices. Replacements aren't new, they are factory refurbished.
And to answer your question in the OP, flashing back to stock via Odin will not wipe your counter. Triangle away is needed for that

Take it to a real sprint store not a 3rd party one. Make sure you are on a stock un-rooted rom, explain the issue and if its jot something they can fix you will be ordered a replacement device. That should be a warranty covered situation, no cost to you.

Stock TW is so annoying...

Just bored and venting about how much I hate stock TW 2.3.6 on my S2. The USB hub on my phone has been iffy, at best, recently and until I get a warranty exchange, I'm keeping stock. It won't be for another week or so because I have to go into the local TMO store tomorrow and document the problem for their staff. It took me forever to unroot and ODIN back to stock because of my damaged USB port, I can't risk it again. Ugh.

LOL there's no direct correlation dude. But in order to get a warranty replacement, I need to be on stock firmware. I know some people say that they've sent it in rooted and on a custom ROM but I'm not gonna take the risk if I don't need to.
I bought my device used. Has one nicks and minor scratch on body.
I swear I'm a strict about having the any of my devices stay as new as possible. I wanted to warranty exchange. In the end I stuck with the device. Also hear the replacements are all refurb devices.
In the end I just loaded CM9. Main reason I stayed away from this device was the Stock ROM. I hate it...... Alot.....
Been happy because of CM9. Now the imperfections don't bother me so much, but the true source of my hate for this phone was really the Stock ROM. Now I'm just pleased.
Asurion didn't want to give me a replacement phone since I broke mine in Feb, called it in in May, and went to finish my claim July 22. A simple letter to the CeO with some few choice words will do wonders. I have a NEW non-refurbished phone.

Former rep here, doesnt matter. In store reps are typically stupid, just say its a theme. Reps in the know - know better, they might recommend erring on the side of caution just to be nice...
Protip: the out of warranty replacement fee is usually less than the insurance deductible. No one ever reported back with issues after sending a smashed/wet phone, so I'll assume its still valid.

they just charge you the replacement fee and everyone moves on with their business. If you need more than just my word, make up some excuse to get to look at the exchange pages at your local store. I found this stuff out in the small print right above the CUSTOMER AGREES? checkbox (that no one ever reads; on the phone they do, but very very quickly) and shortly after found someone who was desperate enough to try it.
To reiterate; neither i nor my customers have had any problems replacing cracked screens or water damage, but tmo has wised up on some of the old tricks before so it may just be a matter of time.
I had been doing this from march through October of "11.
Also!! Good luck finding a rep who doesn't mind subverting the rules to help out people. Haha
Edit: ill try to reach out and have someone get me a picture of the page in question, it may take a few days though

Probably not, just sounds bricked...what happened before this?
Plugging it into the charger if it doesn't turn on likely wouldn't do any good, as the phone technically needs to be "on" to charge the battery correctly. Even when off, the phone is still in a pseudo-on mode when plugged in.

Unfortunately, though, our M&P regarding rooted and ROMed phones has changed recently, and we do now have to cover hard bricks (provided they're not caused by liquid, physical damage, etc.). Doesn't make sense...but it is what it is.

If you have the blue light of death and can't get into Download Mode or Recovery, then you can just go to a Sprint store and pay $35 to get a replacement, even if you don't have TEP. This is what I did when I was hit with the emmc superbrick bug back in February. They will probably give you a refurb though. Sometimes the techs can be uptight though so it may help to act dumb and claim you were accepting the FF18 OTA update when something happened to your phone.

lol wow okay most people learn from their mistakes. Doesn't matter what the tep covers you still pay hard earned money for it.. i'm a tech as well and yeah very rarely i reject exchange requests when I know the phone was bricked because of flashing. If it's at the end of the month i'll maybe reject it because of my AE rate but beginning of the month i'll help happily And you educate urself more after these silly mistakes. Sprint makes way more than enough money from new acts, so considering the cost for insurance, shouldnt be a problem. Deductibles and insurance cost is going up anyways for these new phones with a higher retail price of $550 and thats BS.

[Q] Busted up Screen and LCD?

Yesterday I dropped my phone, and busted up the screen, and the digitizer, I believe its called... The touch screen no longer responds, but the phone still works, can receive calls etc.
If I choose to replace it through insurance or something like that, they will charge me full price if I sent back a rooted phone correct?
Just trying to way my options... one thread talks about going through ATT's Device Support Center, which maybe the cheapest route.
Any suggestions on getting this baby unrooted without a functional screen/?

Well since you have insurance then just pay the deductible! It's not FULL price tho! Think it's like$125/150 and they'll send you out a new one!! Just tell em it fell broke apart. I don't think they'll want to to send in a busted up phone!!
That is what I did when I broke my phone. Plus it's like 2 day turn around for them too get you the phone..

The guy who sold me the Note 3 was into custom ROMs. When I mentioned Knox efuse and trade in with Jump he said no one there would even know what to look for at trade in and that flashing should be fine. He said the same thing about warranty returns. The insurance company would just take back the device.
But...he did mention that trade ins with Jump would end up as refurb devices. So its possible that there might be someone along the repair service chain knows whats what.

I don't think the eFuse matters unless you're getting it warranty repaired by Samsung and even then, they may not bother to check if there's no custom ROM running. Most people don't know about it or even care. I sent a Droid4 to Moto for warranty repair and there is something similar (it may or may not be the same) that gets flipped when it's rooted. They didn't care and repaired the defect.
Just found this thread Googling for the same thing. I was told by the guy at the T-Mobile I went to that they don't care at the store when trading it in, but he's not sure what would happen when it got to wherever they send it and see it tripped.
Basically what happens is if it is tripped your rights to the extended warranty are revoked going forward. You won't be able to add the extended warranty or jump for 12 months plus you pay out of warranty fee.

Water damage

Is the screen broken
Is their physical damage

I'm a tmo rep and so far they've said nothing about checking anything but the screen and water damage etc, I've also traded in 3 different phones that were rooted and custom Rom and all and never heard a word from Samsung or whoever the traded phones go to. Plain. And simple lol we don't care what you did with your Phone. I've also sent an s3 I. Under Warranty Last Year Without Using Triangle Away And There Were No Repercussions. Cost too much money and time to check every phone they just basically reflash and refurbish and send it back out

Don't know yet, I can go in t-community tomorrow and see if I can contact a Samsung tech and see what they say. I asked our Samsung rep and he had no clue there was such a thing as Knox. I'll get back tomorrow with an answer.

I'll hold off on rooting until you get back to us then. This is my first Touchwiz Samsung phone and I'm ready to experience ASOP on this beautiful screen
