Google Wallet Compatibility?? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Anyone else notice they couldn't download Google Wallet from the Play Store.
Anyone know why? Or know how hard it would be to get it to work?

4.3 is brand new, there is still a lot of compatibility issues with apps and lots of app updates to be pushed, just wait...
otherwise find an apk somewhere on the internet and just download it and install it manually

tossed the apk over from my 1st gen nexus 7 and no good. wont install (not rooted btw)

Definitely hoping it's a 4.3 compatibility issue. Can't think of any other reason why it wouldn't be compatible.

According to AndroidPolice -
Update: Director of Product Management for Google Wallet Peter Hazlehurst dropped by our comments section below to confirm that Wallet is not compatible with the new Nexus 7 for the same reason as the HTC One Play Edition – the device does not carry a secure element, the small bit of hardware required to store encrypted card credentials on a device. This is required in order for Wallet to function, well, securely.

I put 4.3 on my nexus 10 and wallet works fine.... Hard to believe it won't work on my new 7?

[Slightly] off topic, but why is it that Google Wallet won't work with the HTC One GPe but it works with the Sprint HTC One?

I'm not an expert on Google Wallet (I've only attempted to use it once at a POS terminal, but my default credit card expired so I wasn't able to), but I have set it up and run the app on a few devices.
One of which was my SGS2 which, if I recall correctly, did not have the secure element either and was not 'supported'. However, someone found a work around and was able to get it to install and function correctly. I imagine it could be done for the N7v2 as well.
However, the most annoying thing is that Google left it out in the first place. The price difference was negligible at best, so it was either a willfull action, which makes little sense as this was a huge marketing point on the original N7, or some idiot design engineer forgot about it.
I really love the Nexus 7. I loved the first one and I love the second one. But some of the decisions Google made on features and components pisses me off. For <$10 more in parts, they could have used Gorilla Glass, had a multi-colored notification LED, added this secure element, put in a native HDMI port, etc. I know external storage isn't going to happen with Google, but they could have spent a few extra bucks to make this great tablet just amazing.

Nope.
Neither the 2012 or 2013 models have gorilla glass. They have "scratch resistant" glass made by Corning, who makes gorilla glass, but that's not the same thing.

I wanted the GN...but ended up with the HTC Sensation XE

I just destroyed my HTC IS and really needed a phone fast.
Now I really REALLY wanted the Galaxy Nexus. Mostly because I hate, I HATE HTC Sense. It's absolute bloatware and almost everybody else makes better stuff in Android Market. (Very mature to REALLY want a phone and not much better to hate something either). But I'm tired of HTC's slow updates and not being able to remove Sense. The thing is, I really like HTC hardware and always have. No one comes close, even Samsung. Only Apple is better.....
Now I'm not fishing or trolling or looking for a fight. I just want to share my thoughts and I actually still want the Galaxy Nexus. But I didn't for two very very important reasons:
1)
No matter how you look at it, the GN camera isn't that great. My HTC Legend took better pictures. They are not awful, but they don't come close to the best today. Taking pictures with my phone that look amazing (as amazing as iPhone or Incredible S) is very important to me. It's sadly, more important than the greatness of my Sense-hate. Pictures from the GN SHOULD be at least as good as my old Incredible S pictures, not worse. Technology goes forward, not backwards.
2)
Every phone I have ever bricked, destroyed etc. I have had the extreme pleasure of removing the SD-card AFTER destroying it and coping such things as jpg's/movies/docs/settings. The usb mass-storage/not using your phone while syncing/copying is only mildly annoying. Running out of space for apps has actually never been a problem to me either.
I want ICS, I want clean Android, I don't want Sense, I want fast updates.
On a side note, I actually don't see any reason whatsoever why HTC can't release "pure" Android for their phones. Most people are happy with Sense and don't care. Those that do, would like to buy HTC because they could change it.
They would sell more phones if you could hassle-free run pure Android on any of their devices. The only reason to "lock" Sense down this way, is to lock down their customers to their system....and that's not consumer friendly.
and the point of this post was...
My thoughts exactly read his post a few times and not sure what the point is that they are trying to get across??
Aside from the fact they hate sense yet brought a HTC again!?
HTC unlocked their bootloader. Only matter of time till we get a Vanilla Android ICS. No more Sense, rooted and with HTC hardware.
Download a launcher?

Sounds like op needs a nexus one or needs to find a new hobby. I'm leaning on the hobby part.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
On my Rezound, I just downloaded ADW and most of my woes from Sense were solved. It's just the launcher I don't like.
The GPU is supposedly slower. But probably not by much. Be aware, ICS is made for Amoled screens. They put lots of stuff on top of a solid black background, like music controls and etc. This won't look right with a backlit LCD.
Also ICS isn't as simple as unlocking the boot loader and flashing an AOSP rom. ICS isn't officially supported by any other phone so there aren't specific ICS drivers. So while it might work, it may be lacking.
Plus you'll probably never see JellyBean officially. Again with a hacked up version. By then support will be minimal.
The SD card isn't really an issue. Sure you might brick it, but ClockworkMod won't erase your SD data. You can still wipe and flash another rom.
The camera... kinda agree. Camera isn't great compared to my G2x but it does take really fast pics. I can snap off 5 pics with the instant shutter and choose a good one. I'd rather have a good 5mp picture then a blurry or bad 8mp one.
Galaxy Nexus - 4.0.3 CM9
Asus Transformer - 3.2 Revolver
Criticizing a phone by taking in consideration the initial software/ ROM (in your case, HTC sense) is absurd here on XDA. Dude, it's XDA not BestBuy! Here people care about hardware in 1st place, since nowadays rooting, unlocking and changing ROMs is just a metter of taste and time.
Really....I event don't consider the ROM running on a phone before buying it, because I know eventually I will put CyanogenMod or any other custom vanilla type ROM.
Look into hardware comparison and the XDA support for it; let the devs do their magic and taking care of the rest.
PS: you actually remind me that my Mytouch came with Sense now that I though about it, lol
Hehe, I just wanted to "vent" and perhaps get a little discussion going. Isn't that what XDA is for?
I have...sorry, HAD ADW EX on my IS, but Sense and a lot of HTC integration kept bugging me. Like checking an address in phone book would bring up HTC's navigation, not Google Maps. I use a custom lockscreen, but the HTC one kept returning intermittently.
Hardware vise, I have never had any major problems with any HTC phone and Sense was pretty neat on my HTC Hero. But it really hasn't changed since then. All my HTC phones have all had amazing cameras compared to phones at the time.
The only reasons I didn't get the GN was camera and being able to remove the SD after killing my phone. It's more like "Idiot-backup"...If there's something I've not synced, I can always retrieve it and copy it.
Example: On my HTC Legend, I cracked the screen, but it still worked. I had no way of connecting the phone to my computer. I was able to get everything off it because of the memory card. If I did that with the GN, I would have to send it in for repair, they would wipe it clean and I would have nothing. You can't see this happening to you? Or sending it in and the guy's at the repairshop getting your missus titty pics?
I DO like the unified storage solution, but I manage to break a lot of phones.
Everything else about the GN I think is great.
well ...here you go the discussion
I am not saying this thread is useless. And yes XDA is here to debate and learn.
I just gave you my take on what comes to HTC w/Sense so you can have a peace of mind deciding on what phone to get in the future. Consider hardware and hardware features. I love HTC for their quality, but then came Samsung with SAMOLED+ and 720p resolutions in my face...so now, guess what? I am getting a S2 for my gf and GN for me. Even though I hate TouchWiz on S2, I even don't consider it a deal breaker, since I know it will be rooted and flashed.
horrible, pointless post. as is my response. go leave this on phone that you purchased forum. not this better phones one.

Like he said, it's just a discussion about why he chose not to get the GNex. If that's all you could post, you shouldn't have even bothered to reply.
To OP, I understand your concerns about the camera and no sd card slot. In fact, those are probably the two biggest complaints about the GNex when it was announced. However, I think the pros of this device far outweigh the cons.
All my pics and video are synced automatically with instant upload. All my music is in the Google Music Cloud. Files I can store in Google Docs or even drop box. Why do I need an SD card again?
The camera... you'd be surprised at what actually taking time to focus can do. I've taken some excellent pictures, even impressed a photographer.

don't know why people get so defensive everytime there's a post about SGN's flaws.
Yes, camera sucks (yes, even if you hold down the button to focus)
Yes, no expandable storage is stupid
Personally, I like my SGN, but those two flaws do annoy me. But like the other poster above me said; the pro's outweigh the con's

1) HD Videos, I would love to stick a 32gb microsd in mine and bring it around with a MHL adapter to play HD movies where ever I want (~4gb - 8gb each movie)
2) Emulation - PS1 Images are huge, with full sixaxis support and hdmi mirroring, my phone is a portable entertainment system (~800 mb each game)
3) Other games requiring a download to the SD card - it will fill up fast. (size varies)
Also take note that I have the 16gb GSM version, unlike the 32gb LTE version.

No microsd is monumental failure, shows you how greedy phone companies are just to push the 32gb versions.
Despite that, I am still on fence whether to get it or not. Someone please give me reason not to switch from Motorola Atrix 2 to SGN, I have my finger on the trigger
From what I gather in the OP's post was that HTC sucks, but the Galaxy Nexus just sucked a little more overall so he bought the HTC.
There's no reason not to get it. Pure stock and support directly from Google. Latest updates, beautiful screen. Fast...
And to anyone who doesn't enjoy their phone because of no SD card, send it to me. I'll pay you a small fee, maybe $100 since you probably feel it wasn't worth whatever you paid for it anyhow. My fiance wants one. Thanks.

Kinda funny because they never offered a 32GB version of the Nexus S to "push". And there still isn't any GSM 32GB version of the Galaxy Nexus to "push". Or a 16GB LTE version to advertise a lower price to later up-sell...
I don't think Samsung is evil and trying to push a 32GB version. I think they just have the vision that the Nexus phones will no longer have SDcards and will be stuck at 16GB (next will probably be 32GB).

Wallet worth an Insurance claim?

So, like many,I'm locked out of google Wallet. Would it be worth it to file an insurance claim and get a different nexus (new or refurb) or should I just hold off and continue to wait for a fix?
Any helpful input would be appreciated.

They would not process the claim based on an app not working

How did you get locked out?
Well if you're using a VZW Nexus it's blocked/locked form usage. Did you get the apk or? I have wallet on my VZW Nexus and I can use it freely.
Cant you "break in" into Google Wallet by deleting the data so it asks you for you to set your pin?
I don't even think the galaxy nexus is officially supported by google wallet and the application is blocked in the market by verizon. It may have been the wallet security measures which locked your account and you could try calling google wallet support to reset your account.
Try ODIN Flashing and Fastboot Flashing yourself to stock. I don't think it could actually fix it, but it's worth a shot I guess. There will probably be a fix in the future, either from Google or XDA (my money is on XDA), but it will definitely be a while. I sold my Nexus One before it ever got a custom HBOOT, which many thought no one would take up. I would ask for a refurb personally, as I like using GWallet and it's one of the reasons I bought the phone.

Secure Element is a hardware component. Verizon cannot deny a claim on a hardware issue. That said...how do you explain to those peons to know the difference? I assume that if/when the ISIS app comes out, it will use SE as well. Then it will be easier to show them that its hardware (maybe).
Google Wallet may be blocked from the market, but Verizon allows sideloading of apps. Nowhere in their warranty terms do they say, "You are explicitly not allowed to install Google Wallet."
From what I've read, your secure element has shut itself down. If this is true, you'll probably never get a fix from either Google or XDA.
The OP could print out some Google support posts showing that phones need to be replaced when this happens. Verizon cannot void a warranty based on Google Wallet. The phone has the capability. It is of no fault that the user has a corrupted SE.
Better be stock and locked though.
@OP, if you're within your returns period then you should be able to just take the phone back.
However, though morally questionable, other people on these forums have had success by intentionally placing their phone into a bootloop to get a replacement device.

Google Wallet on GNex
My GNex is about 2 mo. old and when I first got it, one of the first things I wanted to do with it was put Google Wallet on it. Unfortunately, that was during the time when there were so many issues with it. After much research on XDA,(thanks so much by the way!), I installed the .apk from Google Wallet website. I have the "Unsupported Device" banner at the top of the screen but for me it's not a big deal. I have used it at several businesses and it worked flawlessly. I have even added funds to the Google Prepaid card from my bank's VISA debit card. An added bonus is peoples amazement when I pay for something with my phone. Google Wallets "Cool Factor" is off the scale.

I can confirm Skip will be given as a free bonus with all motomaker orders for a "limited time," I just don't know how long (first few days? weeks?).
Thanks. I imagine it probably just depends on how the phone sells? Google/Moto is probably providing at&t with some stock to get Skip visible in the public and get people interested in using it. Just a thought.
How do you guys see it being useful? I don't mean that in a snide way, just curious. Maybe I don't know enough about it but seems to just replace swiping to open? I have group administrative policies through work so I'd probably not be able to benefit much from it since we are forced to use a pin or password unlock. Kinda kills all the lock screen options out there. Damn government work. Anyway, seems like there could potentially be some cool Dev to expand the Skip functionality in the future? Call waiting/music and volume controls/etc. Not sure if any of that is compatible though.

It's kind of hard to understand exactly how useful it is until I actually get it later this week and test it out myself. Not even the press has given a review on it despite getting their motomaker phones yesterday, which I find it somewhat annoying because I'm curious exactly how useful it is. The basic usage is meant to work with a moto app that will allow your screen to disable the security lock pin/pattern if you had it enabled and it requires you to tap the phone to the clip on your clothing/belt or one of the "dots" that you can put in your car, desk, or other safe zone you want. Beyond that, the details are limited. Just have to wait at this point.
any word on if this can be used with other devices? I'd like this for my work phone that i cant root/tasker. Any info would be greatly appreciated

I don't think nfc tags inside it are propriety, so it should work any app that can control nfc. But that's the catch, you still need an app to control the actions and recognize the tags, which may still probably require root to do so depending on what app you use. You could try installing the moto skip app if you can find the apk and then see if it works. No guarantee though.

I have to use a password as well for work, and it looks like if you get the tags and the skip you can just leave the phone on them and just turn on the screen to unlock it and then you can use the voice controls.

Kinda kills all the lock screen options out there. Damn government work. Anyway, seems like there could potentially be some cool Dev to expand the Skip functionality in the future? Call waiting/music and volume controls/etc. Not sure if any of that is compatible though.

My activesync security policy doesn't allow NFC unlock
Well, it looks like the Moto Skip functionality doesn't work with any run-of-the-mill NFC tags. I installed their app, but I think it only listens for NFCs with a particular data header.
Anyone with a Skip tag willing to post an NFC dump?

According to Motorola's own support pages:
Can Moto X support the use of other NFC tags, or only Motorola Skip?
Once you have setup Motorola Skip, consumers can buy alternative aftermarket NFC tags (supported by the NXP chipset) and link it to Moto X for use alongside Motorola Skip.
Not bad.

I saw that, but they're leaving something out. I tried a half-dozen different tags that work perfectly with other NFC programs on my Moto X, but none of them trigger Motorola Skip setup. There's no way to manually run the Skip setup, so it must listen for some kind of preprogrammed code on the official Skip NFC tags.
EDIT: Just got off the phone with Motorola (thought I'd give it a shot). The support rep I talked with said Motorola Skip was only compatible with the official Skip clip and stickers. I mentioned the support page online saying it'd work with other tags, and she said that conflicted with her documentation. Boo.

Do you have an original Skip tag? I thought you needed to set up a real Moto tag first. Then you can setup 3rd party tags - at least that's how I read it.

Made it work, sorta
Received my T-Mobile Moto X today. (Ordered it yesterday, they apparently decided to ship Priority Overnight, Saturday Delivery). It came with an official Motorola Skip. Configured it and the dots without an issue. Then went to Security > Manage NFC Unlock and tried to associate an NFC-based loyalty card I happened to have around. (Five Stars card, fwiw). It recognized the tag and indicated it needed to make additional room on it. I was prompted to "erase the data" on the card. Given that I really didn't want to render the card useless, I passed. But it sure seemed to me as if I had a blank tag of some kind that I could have written to it and started using it.

Good. This is consistent with what's in the online documentation.
BTW does anyone know if original Skip tags can be purchased at retail stores, or is it only orderable from Motorola?
The skip was a horrible idea. I received mine 2 days ago after waiting the full 10 days. Then yesterday I went to the mall wearing it on my cargo pocket for my shorts and lost it somewhere..... Big ass waste of $20.

Anybody willing to sell me theirs?
I can't get it in canada.
I'll do an NFC dump if I can get my hands on one.
At first I thought it was ridiculous to pay $20 for a simple NFC tag, but I can't get anything to activate the motorola skip software on my moto x.
I can unlock my screen with tasker if I could just get an NFC tag to be read with screen off or locked, but I cant get the motorola to read any of my NFC tags with my screen off or locked.... Anyone know how to do this? I know its possible because the skip is detected when the screen is off

Update 20161024: My apologies! I have updated the OP with links that do not require decryption keys.
So, I am one of the poor souls that waited, impatiently, for the Note 7's release. Reading all of the rumors and leaks along the way, that flagship went from the Note 6 with dual cameras and the ability to cook you breakfast to the Note 7 with one camera and if you had the battery issue, could possibly cook your pants.
Still, I owned the first and second iteration. Even after Samsung announced they were done, I still had hope. The beautiful curve of the screen (less prone to accidental touches), the waterproof S-Pen with it's fine tip, the massive, over saturated screen that I have come to love about Samsung and the knowledge that I had the phone that I wanted, without settling.
Alas, I recently turned in my Note 7. I considered the Pixel XL but the ship date has said 6-8 weeks for approximately 6-8 weeks. I looked at the LG V20 the first to use band 66... Although I don't know how good, reliable or available that is. But 1. It's LG and 2. Unreleased, untested and unloaded with Samsung Pay (which is something I love) Quick side note, every time I have used SP for the first time with a different phone during this whole process, I have been gifted the $10 initial purchase gift card, I'm at $50 in first time uses as of now. I ordered the Note 5 but could not handle the lack of external memory and somehow the thought of it not being ip68 bothered me...
Now I'm here with the S7 Edge again. Trying to cope with my loss. In an effort to make things a little better I have searched around. Because I use SP, I don't root anymore (well played Samsung) but I have found some APKs that help, even just a little...
Samsung Notes, the new and improved note-taking suit introduced on the Note 7 can be found below. I find it stupid to write with my finger but it gives me access to the things I wrote when I was happy, before the tragedy:
https://mega.nz/#!hkxxVARS!vHO2P4RPVTM2TWLPU0fA4WM1hj-F8ClcmRYXTD59Crg
Galaxy Labs adds the option to your Advanced Features menu and allows you to test some of Samsung's latest and greatest ideas:
https://mega.nz/#!IxYVlDQb!cyosZqRIWm-3RqkgOp0XKLV-p5PVpvZVA3lvJyD6yfc
Install both as a normal APK.
*Just to clarify, I didn't create these APKs, I found them*
If anyone had found any other coping mechanisms, please share. We have to stick together and hope that the Note series won't suffer the same fiery fate as it's latest addition.

May I ask where you "found" these apk's?
I won't be rooting either because of SP and frankly there really isn't a need to root.

The Samsung Notes I "found" among the APKs I extracted before I turned my Note 7 in. The Galaxy Labs I "found" on my Mega from before I got my first Note 7 and don't remember, hence the ambiguous "found".

Like the post above mine says, it's a couple more steps but here's a shortcut on his method...
The notification that pops up when you take a screen shot has "edit" as an option... Select that, then "Photo Editor" and at the bottom "draw" is an option.
I feel you on that though. And it's just not the same without the pen

What features are you going to miss, love or are concerned with when buying the Fold?

Without ever seeing the Fold in person and actually handling it I going to miss a few features based on the Specs I've read and videos I've watched. Here's my list.
Features I might miss:
1. Larger front facing screen...my caveat here is if the screen was larger it would probably be way too skinny anyway and would look really weird because of the dimensions..
2. Iris Scanner - love this feature on my N9. I know it's already gone on the S10's but it just works so well.
3. Update :MST for Samsung Pay is Probable for all phones. From what I've read, we're only getting NFC at least on AT&T but their website could be wrong since Samsung says it will have MST & AND NFC. That is always the beauty of Samsung Pay over various other Pay technologies. Worked just about everywhere for me.
4. MicroSD slot. OK, I might not use up the 512GB but do love the MicroSSD option which is great to easily move files and backups around., etc.
5. Waterproofing. I'm guessing that the Hinge is the problem and it would be difficult to waterproof the phone because of it.
6. The Fold would have been perfect if it had an S-Pen...with a selfie camera in the S-Pen (LOL!).
Features I'm not happy with (but I'll still live with):
1. That damn notch with a bezel on the big/inside screen. Almost made me bypass the pre-order. If that screen wasn't so large, I definitely would not have bought the phone. I swore I'd never buy a phone with a notch...Oh well.
2. (I know that this should probably be number one) The Crease! It remains to be seen but every video displays the crease in some manner. I find it funny that any article that I've read where Samsung has replied states that the crease is only seen in these **pre-production** models and the crease will not be seen on the final Fold versions. I'm not holding my breath on this one! So many reviewers stated that looking at the screen straight on and/or with a different wallpaper that the crease is barely visible or not visible at all. Now looking at the screen off to the side, the crease can be seen.
3. The batteries. They should have installed greater mAh capacity batteries. C'mon Samsung! You're using 2 separate batteries, give us more juice. You know we'll be on the 7.3" screen constantly!
4. I'm not really mad that they removed the headphone jack. I love options but 99% of the time I'm using BT headphones anyway.
5. The cameras. OK, we have LOTS of them! But for almost $2000.00 these cameras should have been even better than the S10/S10+'s cams. This Fold phone is Super Special and should have had a little bit more (can you say 10 X optical zoom? Might not have fit though).
6. I am still not fond of the Bixby functionality in comparison to Google Assistant. The Bixby routines are probably the best part of Bixby. I'll probably bypass Bixby.
7. Bixby button also being the fingerprint scanner. I'll lose my mind if I continually activate the Bixby button instead of unlocking my phone. That would make me crazy so I would use other software to disable Bixby altogether.
8. Many early articles on the Fold stated that Samsung would give us a free year of Samsung Premium Care+. I'm hoping that when I receive the Fold, I'll be surprised and find documentation to sign up for our free year. I'm probably dreaming...
9. They should have offered more for Trade-ins. Only up to $300.00 where it was $550.00 for the S10 possible trade-in values. (I'm kind of glad though since I may just need to keep my Note 9 around for awhile).
Unknowns:
1. It remains to be seen if the developers will build apps to work with continuity and sizing, etc. If that isn't done then we might own a $2000.00 boring paperweight. I need my Kustom suite of Apps and if they don't work, the Fold will be almost useless to me).
2. Will the Fold just be too long to easily fit in my pocket. I never put any phones in a back pocket but occasionally put in front pocket. Most of the time it's in a zippered pocket in a jacket or purse or backpack or small waist pack. I'm really not too worried..yet! Hahaha!
3. We definitely need a variety of cases. I'm sure they'll come. The interest in the Fold has seemingly surpassed Samsung's expectations. Samsung kept the final Fold design under wraps so long that I think that's one of the reasons the case makers haven't delivered yet (or they thought that the Fold wouldn't have much interest). I need a super protective Clear Case. I want to show off that Martian green with Gold Hinge!! (and I want to look at it too).
Final observations:
With all of the unknowns and possible negatives, don't get me wrong. I want the Fold!
I love being an early adopter and have saved up for this thing. I've been following Samsung over the years and drooling at all of their foldable prototypes.
With Samsung's track record on gorgeous displays, I know I'll love the tablet screen. I think that the small front screen is not a deal breaker because I liken it to my Lock/AOD screen where I glance at information then move on to the larger screen. It will be just one more step to fully open the Fold. Not inconvenient when you know what's coming! A huge, beautiful screen.
The COOL factor for the Fold is priceless! I am so anxious to get it and I know the feeling will continue as others spot the phone and want to check it out.
If the Fold ends up being a fantastic phone for me, then I'll be selling off a few other Tablets I have as well as my N9.
This is going to be Big! Cannot wait to play!

Based off of the limited amount of people that will buy and have this device probably not, but I could be wrong ?
I'll miss the spen even though I don't use it that often, but the main thing I'll miss about that functionality is being able to capture video as an animated gif (I don't know if this exists on the S series as I've only used Notes as far as Samsung's go). I'll probably use my old Wacom dumb capacitive stylus that's been sitting a drawer for a few years for the simple diagrams I draw in meetings using One note. It did the trick when I used to use an iPad all of the time.
The small screen might get irritating if I want to tap out a message as I already find it difficult using something as small as an iPhone SE. Although with keyboard customisation maybe bigger keys can make that easier.
The notch doesn't really bother me. A hole punch would be equally as distracting as a notch to me on a regular phone, but in a screen that big I can't see it being a problem.
I'm definitely changing the scaling and fitting more on that display. Apparently that's how you get many apps to use tablet mode rather than a big phone layout, so I'll be really happy if that's actually true. But I'd set my mind on getting one even before I heard about that so I won't mind if it doesn't work on everything.
I haven't seen whether Dex is available in tablet mode as it is on the larger Samsung tablets. That would be a killer app for me. I know we can use up to 3 apps, but it's not the same as having a few windows layered and tapping between them, especially if you're copying and pasting between a few documents and you want that bigger layout on each to see text placement properly. Maybe someone will manage to extract and develop an apk that doesn't require root for that.
With regards to the above, I used to have a Toshiba PDA that ran Windows Mobile and with it's 800x600 display you could change the screen scaling and achieve a similar effect. It was pretty great.
The thing I'm mainly looking forward to is reducing my travel kit from a phone, tablet, and kindle to just one device. Ok maybe not just one device, I'll have room for my Switch more often now. Airport security love giving my bags an extra search due to all of the gadgets I end up carrying, and hopefully this will mean I just sail through like most other people.
And while it may be an elitist prick move, I want people to notice it. Most friends and colleagues know I'm a tech geek, but nobody notices the tech anymore, as all of the phones and tablets look so similar. They don't realise it's something new or cool and don't ask. Plus, nowadays all it involves is showing off something a bit faster with more storage and a better camera. Nothing has done anything new for years now. This brings back that wow factor when new phones had something brand new and sparks conversation about the future again.
The US devices will have locked bootloaders just like the other US Samsung devices. Unless I've missed it there is no word on international devices yet. If you're like me and root is a necessity you might want to consider waiting until the situation is sorted out.
Edit... One other thing I ran into today in regards to a potential S-pen is that a reviewer was opining the screen was too soft to support writing. That was a stated opinion not a fact from Samsung. So a guess but not an unreasonable one; It isn't hard to imagine the screen not being able to hold up to a pen.

Looks like we'll still be able to create a gif from a video (you could still have done it on the S9's too). Here's a tutorial for the S10's so I'm sure the Fold will be able to make one too:

Also, it is Dex ready/capable.

This would be great! I'm wondering if it's for Non US Folds. I'm hoping it's for everyone. I wish I had the eSim/nano sim option but not with my carrier (AT&T).
MST not listed in their specs but hopefully it's just incorrect. Thank you for the clarification.

I'm out of here. I'm a rooter and right now I'm now feeling the love with dropping 2k on this device and then killing the warranty. This isn't a complaint per se, it's just not the right tree to be sniffing around for those like me that will most def flog the thing. I do hope all who buy in enjoy the bejesus out of themselves. Good luck gents.

I was just reading AT&T version of the manual & no mention of MST, only NFC. THAT would be stupid to me & I'd really miss it.
