HELP: Ghost Menu - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey guys so I'm having an issue with a phone, it used to happen once in a blue moon, but now it's happening all the time to the point the phone is almost unusable. It acts as if menu keys are being pressed, when I'm not even touching the phone! This video is a great example, someone has to have seen this. What's the fix?

From what I've read it happens in low signal areas. Here's a thread that may be helpful.

There is a way to disable the menu key and use the search key as menu. It's somewhere in the general forums buried somewhere.

I used that fix for a while, but over time, the problem actually gets worse and the search key will start phantom pressing, too. If you're one of the unlucky E4GT owners who have this problem, eventually ALL the capacitive buttons start randomly phantom pressing. Just a heads up from experience.
I suggest running a custom ROM with a Navbar (softkeys) you can enable, and then disable all the hardware buttons.

No need for a custom ROM. I have a tutorial for any rooted TW JB build using multiple ways to get it done.

This is how I fixed my fantom menu button, maybe not a good idea but I was tired no to be able to use my phone, so far no problems at all, I opened my phone and placed a piece of magnet sticker on top of a connector that goes to the bottom of the phone, the the piece of magnet is from a business card that I had on the front of my refrigerator so I cut a little piece of it and put it on top of the connector with the plastic side to the connector to make sure not to touch anything, here are some pictures of what i did, if you want to do it (it is on you) , I am just giving my results so far 3 weeks with no problems.

I'm not experiencing the issue but for the record, does it affect the button presses in any way after placing the magnetic piece there? Does all 4 of the hardware keys work without any hiccups?

Everything works normal, just like new, I did removed the magnet and the menu bottom gets crazy so I did place it back and works like it should. I know it is no something that people should do but I did not care about my phone anymore.

How is this working out still? I was contemplating doing it with a piece of rf shielding but that would've short circuited everything:laugh: That is totally genius on your part!
I loaded a custom ROM on mines and went back to EL26 modem (check my latest post to see the logic behind it)
If this works it's good for those who don't want to go the route I did :good:

I can say my problem with the Ghost menu is completely gone, and I totally forgot I had it.

Can you confirm that this fix is still working?? There is a guy on Youtube that does a similar fix but he removes the motherboard and sandwiches in some aluminum foil where you have the magnet on this side. I like your fix a lot more since it is obviously a lot easier. Please let us know if this fix is still working. Thanks!

I cannot. I believe the symptoms manifests in low signal environments, with the mobile network running. Turn off mobile data to test.
Some swear by it, but I lack the knowledge to validate it, as I am not an electrical engineer.
Much of this comes down to your tolerance for pain. I just bought the Note 3 due to this exact issue. Others have returned their phones because of it. Some replacements end up with this same problem, or busted power buttons.
If you have the desire to keep your phone and the ability to try the fix, then back up everything on it, and execute the procedure; or find someone who can.
Other options are turning off mobile networks whenever possible, trying to get a replacement, or...
Get another phone. The used marketplace is teaming with good deals on S3s, use an upgrade, get a granny phone. You have choice.
I hope that some of this is helpful.
Good luck!

The only REAL fix that I was able to get is sending it back to Sammy and they replaced the PBA(motherboard). This is after sending it back to them two other times and they replaced the LCD screen and mini-jack. I just got it back and gave it to my wife when I got the S3, and immediately she said that in 3g areas it did the phantom menu. After calling and telling them two returns is unacceptable, they expedited the repair, fixed the RIGHT thing this time, and in over a month, there's been zero issues. Not sure if this is an option for anyone as you may be out of warranty, just passing on what finally worked for me. Good luck.

I have had this issue, non-stop, for the past year. It has gotten worse so I contacted samsung and sent my D710 to them to have it repaired.
They replaced the screen, sent it back but immediately (while trying to activate with Sprint) my phone began the phantom menu button. Not only the menu, but I also get phantom search & back key presses. I sent the phone back to samsung, again, and this time they replaced the PBA and still, i have the phantom issue. I called samsung but wont send the phone back a 3rd time. So I visit the sprint store after finding these threads, and the sprint tech replaces my screen again (free of charge) and before I even start my car to leave the parking lot... phantom key presses all over again.
I am convinced there is no fix for this, other than a hardware hack. I tried the magnet trick you guys speak of, but it did not change a single thing. I can trigger the phantom key press by simply sending (or receiving) a text message. It makes it near impossible to have a text-conversation with anybody.
My last resort is to sell the phone on ebay or craigslist to some unsuspecting fool, and replace it with a HTC or some other brand who actually understand RF interference and how stupid it would be to place the 3G antenna anywhere near such a sensitive chip.

[Solved] Best way to get Sprint to fix a phone that locks up or reboots?

I have TEP.
Here's my problem.
I have an Epic that, on multiple ROMs (SyndicateROM Frozen, CleanGB MTD, and even stock at EC05, EI22, and EL30), sometimes enters a state where the capacitive buttons (menu, home, etc.) stop responding. They flash when you touch them, but I get no haptic feedback or response from the phone's OS. I have to slide open the keyboard and use the hard buttons (which DO work). Also, the capacitive touchscreen works perfectly.
I've owned the phone for over a year, and this just started happening.
My guess is that it's a hardware problem and that there's something wrong with the capacitive button controller or related circuitry.
But how in the heck do I prove this to Sprint?!?!?
I wiped it back to EB13 and took it OTA up to EI22. I verified I was still getting the button lock.
I took it in, but they couldn't reproduce the lockup. They calibrated the touchscreen for me and rewiped it. I took it home and was still seeing the problem.
What do I do next?
If the phone isn't malfunctioning while I'm at the store, how am I going to get them to replace any part of the phone?
gawd where's a camcorder when you need one LOL I'm not entirely sure but id say hang around a tech store for a while and wait for it to happen and then run and be like " LOOK LOOK ITS DOING IT ITS DOING IT!" In all seriousness make sure you can reproduce it or video tape it

I started getting reboots on the phone today (EL30 trouble?). I took it in, and they wiped it. I picked it up after work and sat in my car for a few minutes. The phone rebooted. I took it back in, and they ordered a replacement.
EDIT: And not once did they need to see my video. The whole repair setup was very smooth. I was impressed!

[Help] Wife says she hangs up with her cheek.

My wife has been complaining that she hangs up on people in the middle of a call.
She thinks she hangs up with her cheek, but I don't know.
Has anyone experienced this?
Thanks in advance
No I haven't but it seems like her ROM doesn't support the proximity sensor or is broken and is needing a repair or replacement .
Odin it to stock if it isnt already and see if she still encounter this if she does take it to sprint and present them with the problem if you have tep

My wife had the same problem forever, its just because she isn't placing the phone correctly to her ear. and or is moving the phone so the prox sensor turns the screen on and then her cheek hangs the phone up.
That's happened to me before and so has after the call is over I see that all my radios are on and the notification shade is showing. The proximity sensor was deactivated and the screen turned on during a call. My cheek start pressing all sorts of buttons while I was moving about during a call.

I also have noted the issue. I was thinking it might be a sensor calibration issue.
It has been noted on every version of the ROMs I have tried.
Just explain to her that she gives off such a glow that it makes the sensor think it is away from her face in the bright sunshine and she needs to suppress her glow when on the phone.

This happens to my wife all the time and when she gets rolling, she might go on for five minutes until she realizes the other person isn't there anymore. Sometimes I'll purposely not call her back for a few minutes and say, "sorry sweets, you hung up on me again. The last thing I heard was blah blah" and she'll respond, "seriously?! I said a lot then after I lost you" and I'll just chuckle to myself...
Best part is, she won't want to repeat everything again so she'll give me the condensed version.
And yes, a slide to hang up mod would be FANTASTIC...I think.
Tell her to have smaller cheeks. (don't actually say that she'll F you up)

I never had this issue until I jumped to GB. Now it is a real pain. I have to watch for the screen to see if it goes out or comes on while I am talking. Is there a way to calibrate the prox sensor? I kind of figured I would have to live with it, much like the fact that I cannot adjust call volume if the screen is off.
Since going to GB I have had a couple of hang ups, but I think most have been when I am holding the phone with my shoulder and it moves around on my face.
A bigger problem I have had is I will be on the phone with someone and get an incoming call. When I move the phone from my face to see who is calling it will switch over to the new call with out me doing anything!
I would put the phone back to my face to continue talking and would now be on the line with the new caller.
Anyways I am on Clean GB and my wife is GB stock and it has done it to both of us!
I've had this problem on CM9... forgot to check whether it is a Rom glitch or a broken sensor (need to flash to a TW rom)

S-Pen / S-Pen issues...

After my patiently waiting for the release of this awesome device I went to the Sprint store and got some hands on time...
When I got to the S-Note app and started writing the pen dropped out in the middle of the screen....
I went to two different stores and tried 3 different phones.... Was even threatened to have the fuzz called because I was trying to download a paint app to verify the issue
Anyone else notice this......
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
Just tried mine and no problems. I'm able to make lines all the way up and down and across. I made giant loops and it didn't drop once.
Thats cool...
I was sitting here thinking there has to be something simple that is causing it to drop out and the only thing that i have come up with is the stores security device on the back...
magnets can cause it to drop out. also there is a setting under the tab thingy on the s pen. turning it one way makes it more sensitive and turning it another less.

I also went to the sprint store to try out the GN2 and was thinking the exact same thing. The S pen definitely stopped working in the middle of the screen. felt like i had to press pretty hard to get it to register and the dot did not seem to be accurate in terms of where the tip of the pen was.
I have no problems using mine. I use it for draw something. works great!

How difficult would it be to fix my power button?

My power button stopped working. It's not the actual button, but i guess whatever is behind it. Does anyone know what the process is for replacing something like that? Luckily, I'm able to use an app to enable lockscreen and another app to use the volume rocker to wake the device, so I actually don't NEED to have it fix. Of course, if and when I decide to sell, i want it working.

My phone has started to do that as well. It randomly restarts. I started having this problem when I clicked yes on the ota update from samsung while using a blazer rom. I wiped everything, running codename android's jellybean rom and still having these problems. I thought it was a battery issue as I had a previous battery that restarted every so often and the battery would be wiped out. Here, the battery doesn't get wiped out but it suffers a significant drop. In the previous case, the phone never restarted when connected to a charger but now, even the charger doesn't seem to help.
Mine started doing the same thing. I took it to sprint and they just sent me a new one. But a lot of ppl on the forums are having that issue

I just double checked, my old Galaxy S II LTE (aka Skyrocket) has a noticeable rattle when you shake it but I'm not hearing it on the S III (perhaps it's more subdued?). A quick Google search however shows that several other people have experienced the same thing and the general consensus seems to be that it's nothing to worry over.

This plus I can't upgrade to Jellybean because it kills data connection to my phone and battery drain!!
