Google play crashes on brand new nexus 7 - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I am on my second nexus 7 now. The first one had a bad microphone and it did not work at all. I exchanged it and got a new nexus 7 which has a working microphone, but right out of the box several apps crash like google play, gallery, and camera. Factory reset doesnt work, not does clearing the cache and app data for google play. Also apps like google drive tell me I don't have any external storage. I also am unable to copy any files to the tablet by connecting it to my computer. The storage comes up as unknown in size and when I go to copy files the window pops up to show it is being copied, but it never actually copies the file.

I got my third nexus 7 and it worked fine. All of them came from Office Depot in Tulsa Oklahoma. Interestingly enough I got the last one in three of the five stores in my area. I was told by one person that there had been some returns there as well because of defects. I think I should go get a lottery ticket or something because getting two bad tablets in a row has to be some kind of luck.

Yea sucks. Make sure to test NFC and Wireless Charging. I've heard of some issues with those not working. My 32gb seems great and everything works (knock on wood). Are most of the problems on the 16gbs or 32gbs? Some suggested their being a bad batch of memory?
Most importantly is that there seems to be lots of issues surrounding the latest Play Store 4.3.10. Many have dropped back to 4.3.9.
My Google Play doesn't crash, but I'm having problems downloading some apps. I'm having to clear cache in Settings and restart to get them to download/install.

Seems that nfc doesn't work. Wonderful. I don't have a way to test wireless charging. This is ridiculous.

The hot spot for NFC is on the "N". How are you testing it? Do you have some NFC tags? If using another device, make sure both NFC radios are enabled.

For people with problems downloading apps that crashes make sure that you go in tablet Settings, Backup & reset, and uncheck automatic restore. It seems that apps saved under a different version won't load properly. You can set auto restore after.

Trouble finding an App that is causing Hot Reboot (solved)

it's been almost 4 days now
everything on the phone runs great until i restore that mysterious app from backup.
problem is having over 500+ apps/games makes it extremely difficult to pin point which particular app is causing the hot reboot
hot reboot = not full reboot, it just crashes everything and reload the OS
my current suspect some of the many plug ins for Go Launcher EX or IM+
Go Launcher EX runs great on the phone, but then once i restore all those plug ins, it appears to cause the problem
same with IM+
there are other apps i suspect as well like SD card speed increase, or Dual USB
or if not something to do with the Keyboard
at one point the keyboard selection got locked out, and i was unable to choose another keyboard or language
anyways... back to the haystack to find the needle...
Have you tried hooking it up to adb and running a logcat on that bad boy?
Edit: If you run logcat and reproduce the hot-reboot it may show you what is causing the problem. And if that doesn't work there is also a command you can call to get the last kernel message before the reboot. I don't remember what that's called though. Kmsg I think, idk.

lol perhaps i should, i was too lazy to do that, don't really have the time, but after spending 4 days trying to track down the app... i guess it's about time to go about it the smart way

If the simple method doesn't work the first couple of times don't try it repeatedly, it won't ever work effectively.
-We do what we must because we can. For the good of all us, except the ones who are dead.-
i've actually narrowed it down to ICE Music 4.0x or IM+
everything else working great since the last wipe & restore, excluding those 2 apps

Freeze one and test it out.

The command is: adb pull /proc/last_kmsg

That kinda makes sense as to why you thought it was music then but why im+?
-We do what we must because we can. For the good of all us, except the ones who are dead.-
both of them were caught doing something and then crashing everytime it happened
in the end it was because both were trying load up stuff from the SD card which was being hogged by the media scanner, and apparently that didn't share well among those apps and the system itself, and kaboom!

[Q] Some random questions about 4G Touch

I have a few questions that have been accumulating that I would like to get the answers to. If you know the answer to any of the below please chime in.
1. There are a few grayed-out icons that are in my app menus from applications that I have uninstalled and some that are duplicates of applications that I still have installed. Any way to clear these out? I'm assuming these are a result from using the move2sd application at some point.
2. I have Vlingo start automatically when I connect a bluetooth headset. It finds it necessary to remind me how many missed calls I have since I last flashed the phone... I'm up to almost a 100 now. Any way to stop it from doing this?
3. I currently use a suction cup phone holder in my car. Is there any way to have it emulate the official Samsung car dock by going into car mode when I plug the power cable in or is this specific to the Samsung dock? Are there any alternatives to the Samsung car dock with this capability?
4. Whenever I mount the phone as a USB device it reboots itself after I unmount and disconnect the USB cable. Is this normal?
5. My phone is rooted but I have to have a password on it since I use it for work. Is there any way to NOT have it lock immediately after I use the power button to turn the screen off? In other words, I just want it to lock based on the Screen unlock settings timeout value. I know there are some widgets that will do this but I'd rather press the power button instead of scrolling to the screen with a widget.
Thanks for the help!
Argh... no one knows the answer to ANY of these???

If they're still in the list they're probably stock apps that are designed not to be uninstalled. You can remove updates for them but the original app stays. In this case, Titanium Backup is a generally recommended solution to really uninstall those. Just please check what you're doing before you uninstall it.
I snipped #2 and #3 and #5 below as I don't have an answer for those.

Not in my experience. Please make sure you have the current version for the drivers on your PC. If not running a stock ROM you may want to try that (ex. EL29 Rooted or not) and see how it behaves.

Nope, not stock apps. For instance I have two icons for Amazon... one color and one greyed out. Another for "Drawing Pad"... a program that I uninstalled, another dual icon for Google goggles, and another grayed out icon for PNF Lite, a game that I uninstalled.

OK, thanks for the feedback.. I didn't think that this was normal. I think I'll wait until ICS and then reload everything from scratch, including the SD card. I hoping that this rebooting is not damaging to the file/file structure. I only transfer files about once weekly to sync up passwords. The rest of the stuff I just move through dropbox and such.

Hmm... possible that you had these installed and moved to SDCard and they're no longer there? That may explain that as well.
And just so I'm making sure that we're talking the same thing, you're talking about inside Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All, correct?
I was actually referring to the "Applications" button off of the main screen, which shows all the applications... but you gave me an idea... I checked manage apps and removed (uninstalled) all the single instance grayed applications. The ones where both the color and gray icons are present are still there.
Is there a "cache" for the manage applications that I could try clearing?
Otherwise I'll try to uninstall and reinstall completely but I think I may have tried that route already.
Thanks for the help!
Couldn't you open the app drawer and push menu. Go to edit then long click on the icon and click the x to remove? Also in my experience when I remove an app a reboot should fix the apps still showing as greyed out. But you could also reboot recovery and wipe dalvik and cache it should remove those upon reboot

Thanks, I just D/Led the app. Yes, I always use the safe eject option on the PC. Maybe it's some crucial app that shouldn't be on the SD card that is doing this? I'm actually getting a little more concerned about this because I've come back to a the phone a few times with an "SD card was unexpectedly removed" message waiting and ALL the apps on the SD card greyed out.
+1 thanks to all of you!
I experience number 1 quite often too and yes it has to do with moving apps to sd. I think this phone has issues reading sd cards. Only way I can remember fixing this is by playing around and switching the apps back and forth between phone and sd or sometimes tapping on both icons for the app on the app drawer will magically make the grayed out one disappear lol.. I'm using my sd card from my og epic which is a class 2. Maybe this phone needs a better quality sd card.. All I know is if I move all my movable apps to sd card my phone will go into a bootloop frenzy until I remove the sd card and let it boot without it. Then I would put the card back on and hope it won't reboot while scanning media (which it did sometimes) till eventually I would get lucky n get a full scan without rebooting. Now I only move a few apps n not all lol

Hmm, I'll have to try the double-icon tap trick. I have not experienced the boot issue. The last two cards that I've used have been class 10 cards, the current one being a Samsung. I would hope that their phone would work well with their cards. I did have issues with the first version of the Patriot 32GB Class 10 card that I previously used in the phone, but a replacement card with updated firmware seemed to have alleviated most of the issues. Nevertheless I switched to a Samsung card since I have a lot of mission critical info on my phone.
On another note I just ran out of space on the "internal SD" storage and since I'm not sure if there is a way to force apps to move to the "external SD" card, I guess I won't be moving apps to SD any longer.
Actually the apps go directly into the sd. They never go into the internal memory. I know that sounds weird being that when moving apps it shows you the available internal memory but as you move them you will see it won't decrease. That's because its actually going to the sd card. I confirmed this by checking my sd space from the storage section and it did decrease. And my sd card is a Samsung its from the first Epic

Suggested Fixes
1. - This sounds as if you have a corrupt SD Card. I suggest reformatting it. If this doesn't work, switch roms and do a clean install of said rom...
2. - Manually clear the calls
3. - I think this was already answered
4. - Try answer 1 above
5. - Samsung made the pw protected lockscreen this way. You can try the widget if you like.
BTW, if my answers for 1 and 4 don't work, go back to stock UNROOTED and see if the issues persist. If they do, go back to sprint. Your phone is not acting the way it should...

I'm unclear about how the install location is actually determined... I know that if the SD card is unmounted then a lot of the normally available programs go gray so I know those are installed on the external SD card.... however, the "internal SD", or "USB storage" on my phone is almost completely full so not everything is getting installed on the external (plugged in) SD card. All the gameloft games installed in the USB storage area along with IVONA voices and a few other programs.

LOL, Ahh, OK. No I do not (yet).... I'm trying a lite version of "Smart Screen Off" right now. Works good (aside from being little too sensitive) but I want to find out how battery life is effected before I spring for the paid version.

Apps have a separate place where they go. It has a built in 2GB for apps that's separate from the internal memory. So apps are either installed there or the external sd card. Your internal must be full with other stuff like music, movies, photos and things of that nature.
Edit: Game apps even tho they don't install into the USB storage they do copy all files like the music and stuff into the USB storage. That can also be draining your space

Quick Transfer Adapter

Are folks using the adapter to migrate? Phone hopefully arriving today and I've always setup from scratch to prevent moving over too much bloat. Curious how people are handling...
Used it with my Nexus 6P and it worked like a charm for me.
Everything checked was backed up as expected and it helped me saving time by not looking every music album, background picture or whatnot I've stored before.
Used to copy from my Nexus 6, worked fine for the most part. A few things didn't transfer, but it was no big deal as I was ready to setup everything again anyway.
Sent from my Pixel XL
make sure you copy your call logs, text etc because once you exit the setup wizard you can't get back in. I skipped copying data in the store to make a "test call" and i was advised by a google pixel rep that once you skip the set up you can't get back in. SMS backup/restore app has a wifi direct transfer option that handled the texts and call logs for me. Just a heads up here as when I tried to use the adapter without setup wizard running it doesn't do anything "on it's own" the way it does in setup wizard. FYI
Even if you factory reset, still no option to try again?
I used it coming from a Droid Turbo 2 and it worked perfectly.

you plug in the adapter in the pixel and use a normal usb cable to plug into your old phone and the adapter hopefully that made sense
I used the adapter and it said no apps found! Settings appear to have transferred fine.
I tried using TB to ensure they were all attached to the market and it still couldn't find a single app.
Anybody else run into this problem? It's it because I'm rooted?
Never figured out why no apps were found when using the cable transfer and adaptor but I called Google support and they were able to restore my apps wirelessly.
I had to factory reset the phone to get back to the first time setup screen. When you get to the part where it asks you to connect to your old phone with the adaptor there is a link on the bottom to transfer data by other methods. It was a minor pain to go through the initial setup again but it worked so I'm happy.
Just wanted to post the solution that worked for me in case others run into the same situation.
I tried it out from my N6 to PXL. Once I realized that it chose the wrong gmail account as the default I factory reset and did it via email account over the air. After all 130 apps were restored, I repeated that whole setup again because I forgot to unlock my bootloader first -_-
Google Pixel XL Stop Motion Unboxing Video
In case you are still wondering, YES, if you hard reset the wizard will start again(according to a google rep on the Pixel forum). If you "skip" the setup when you 1st turn on the phone there is no getting back into the setup wizard without a hard reset. So if you buy at verizon and they want to skip the setup to hurry up and make a test call to see if you're activated tell them no. You need to setup or you won't be able to without a hard reset.

Did you use Google "data transfer tool"? problems with apps?

while im one of the few with no RMA waranting problems, i am wondering how many DID use the migration tool, and how many set up as new device. i have found in the past, copying the /0/data directory (internal storage for your goodies) i get nothing but problems. and it does seem this is what the Google "data transfer tool" seems to do, forcing me to have to cache/data wipe some apps. Gboard for example, as im typing this, this was an app i had issues with, and realized it was not the stock settings, showing that data had been pulled over. just wiped the app, and it is behaving as expected as far as i can see.
so, the core question, who here used the migration tool and has NO issues. or who has used the tool, and has issues with several, or some apps.
i am considering making a poll to get a feel for where some of the problems people are having may stem from.
this included fingerprint reading issues from devices that had fingerprint readers or even Bluetooth issues. i myself came from the N6 with no fingerprint data, and was on a rom before i did the migration. i expect to factory reset and start as new with no prev data to taint the device. as its cleaner than wiping each app one by one.
as it stands i have NO device breaking hardware issues, just the case where some apps are behaving buggy like Gboard, and voice texting (before i did an app wipe to its defaults)
I used it for the first time going from Pixel XL to Pixel 2 XL. Went quickly and everything is fine.
The only thing that didn't transfer over are APK files.

My experience exactly. I was pleased by how well it went.
i tried to use it, kept complaining about couldnt connect with cable i was using and that i should trying using the charging cable that came with the phone instead (i was using the orig samsung cable that came with the phone) i tried all other kinds of known good data cables that i had laying around as well. nothing seemed to work.
all contacts are in the cloud, transfered all my sms/mms with 'sms backup and restore' app, email is in the cloud, pictures/video is in the cloud, put a few documents on dropbox and reinstalled all apps myself. it didnt really take all that long.

Same...came from a Moto Droid Turbo and have nothing but praise for the Pixel 2 XL. Best phone I've ever used.
I used it coming from an OG Pixel XL. Everything worked perfectly.
I used it from the 6P to the 2XL, and it was amazing. Somehow I didn't even know that was possible, but I'm sure glad it is there. Being that it only transfers the apps data, not the APKs, it seems to be fairly efficient and not cause any issues (at least when I did it.)
I used it going to my Pixel XL last year, and my 2XL this year. It transferred more this time around than before. I had an issue with 1 or 2 apps I had to wipe data on to get them to work right, but nothing substantial.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I transferred from XL to XL 2 and everything went fine, same as previous statements with the apk files not transferred. Only issue I have noticed was Google fc once.
I used it twice. Once from my Nexus 6P to the P2XL, and again when I had to swap my first P2XL out for another (For some reason, my Fi pre-order somehow got fulfilled through the Google Store, so they couldn't activate Device Protection... and no, neither Fi nor I have any idea how that happened). Both times, everything worked just fine, but it didn't transfer the settings for every app. I always backup my "Internal Shared Storage" folder to my computer beforehand, and copying a few folders back took care of most of the app settings that were missed. I think all the rest were taken care of by logging into the app.
All phone logs, SMS/MMS history, voicemails, Wi-Fi passwords, desktops icons, etc. came back perfectly. Widgets were properly placed, but had to be reconfigured.
EDIT: One nice thing I forgot. In both cases, the old phone was to be factory-reset and shipped off, so by hooking up the USB-C cable, I was able to use the old device to start charging the new one, allowing me to jump right in on the transfer, without worrying about the out-of-the-box battery level of the new device. You do have to pay attention to which device is charging which though... but a quick tap on the notifications could swap that around if necessary.
I transferred from XL to XL 2 and everything worked surprisingly well, except text Messages. I use SMS Backup for the messages.

Question Any idea how to fix being able to print?

Tried uninstalling and installing the hp print app, no matter what any time I try to print from any app it crashes? Any ideas? Running the lastest BVA9 Android 12
Can you print from the native Print function? Might be the HP app doesn't work on 12. I have Epson, so can't test it for you.
I'm pretty sure I've tried that with the same result, I've been through so many combinations! I'll remove the hp app and try again just using the android one.

That's frustrating! I assume you will trying to print different documents and not just the same one? Sometimes, files get corrupted. I had to help a family member recently who received a PDF from work that somehow always stopped printing at the same page and told the printer the paper was jammed (it was not), no matter how many times it was printed and what device it was printed from. I'd never seen anything like it! I told them to request a brand new scan of the document.
Yep it's a pain in the ass alright, I don't even get as far as printing, whenever I ask it to print anything using any app it has a think then crashes.

That sucks. You haven't disabled any services that would affect printing? Have you tried clearing cache and data for the print service? Were you ever able to print with this phone, or did it happen after the update or installing an app or?
I've not had the phone long tbh, I think this is the first time I've tried to print. Don't think I've disabled anything, and not sure what to look for there. Cleared cache on the apps, and on the phone.

Okay. Have you Googled the problem to see if anyone else had a solution? I did that the other day when my Always-On calendar suddenly was on the wrong date (happened after keeping the phone in battery-saving mode during a two-day power outage), and found the solution from years ago where going into the Samsung calendar app (which I don't use) and telling it to lock the time zone worked.
Yeah that was the first port of call, tried a few things and nothing made a difference. I'll keep fiddling away
