smart dock - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Accessories

hi,
could be nice to see if the smart dock (the one with HDMI port, 3 usb ports, etc) manufactured for the galaxy note 2, will be compatible with the tablet note 10.1 2014 edition.
It seems to work on the new note 3 and just wondering if might be the case for the tablet as well. I see that the new tablet has a usb port that looks like the one in the note 3 (even thogh the latter mounts a usb 3 and the tablet a usb 2 as far as I know)
Regards

I second this, the dock looks great for use with the tablet. If it works of course.

I have
<samsungs site>us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EDD-S20JWEGSTA
this(sorry can't create links yet) dock. If this is the one you're referencing, it works awesome with my S4... but... doesn't work with the note 10.1 2014 I have. Doesn't even recognize it as a source of power. So the dock appears to be useless.

Yes thats the one, its a shame though that it does not work. One of those could turn the tab into a small computer, for when you travel etc.

try it with original power adapter from note 10.1 2014
Hi guys,
Did you try the Multimedia dock powered by the AC USB charging adapter which came with the Note 2014?

Yes, I have tried it with original AC adapter and with Note 10.1 AC adapter - nothing happened in both cases - the dock just doesn't do anything with Note 10, it does work just fine with Note 2.
It's funny though, as I do have another adapter, it's called HDMI Connection kit (http://shop.brando.com/HDTV-Adapter-and-OTG-Card-Reader_p09720c1451d001.html), and that one does work, I can connect USB device, SD card and HDMI out works too.
I haven't yet tried USB and HDMI at the same time - I'll do it today.

Interesting! Please let us know if it works. HDMI + USB would be perfect. Could you also try charging it through micro-USB at the same time?

Well I have done some tests and it works (mostly).
I'm typing this reply on USB keyboard connected to generic USB HUB, that has also connected USB mouse and an USB flash drive.
Hub is connected to the USB port on the adapter.
I have also HDMI cable connected to the adapter and the whole thing is connected via HDMI2VGA converter to 17" flat screen. Picture is streched but everything works.
The "mostly" part is because the "connection" to USB devices is a bit unstable - sometimes they disconnect and reconnect and especially because you can't charge the tablet at the same time whatever charger I connect it just doesnt charge the device.
I'm guessing Samsung either screwed something or intentionally changed on connection port or in software compared to S3/4 and Note 2/3...

Thats good to know, thanks! I'm not too worried about the charging part since its a tablet. I hope the HDMI can actually output 1080p 30Hz video

Can we have a link for this smart dock please ?

I wonder if this one may work...?

....and the Note 3

I would really like charging and HDMI at the same time. Any products verified to do this?
Does anyone have any idea's why the dock doesn't work? Anyone willing to try to force it to work either through an app or even a kernel mod? I think this warrants further investigation.

Does anyone know if the DA-E570 wireless dual dock works with the G-Note 10.1 2014.

USB sense resistors
The reason why the smart dock does not work on the Note 10.1 2014 is that in different micro USB accessories there are different resistors between pin 4 and 5 in the micro USB connector. The manufacturers can make device specific accessories by making the Android device react on a specific resistor in its accessory. There are other xda-developer threads discussing this, and trying to sort out how to e.g. compose smart docks providing charging to the Android device and using its USB host capabilities to connect USB devices.
One Samsung smart dock seems to have a 40.2 kOhm resistor and work on some Galaxys. But not on Note 10.1 2014.
I have tried all resistor values that are documented to be able to possibly have something to do with dock mode and OTG mode, but the Note 10.1 2014 does not react on any of them except on 40.2 k Ohm. On all other values it just charges and does not accept to use connected USB devices.
Only 40.2 k Ohm shows a slight difference. It shows a red cross over the chargng icon, indicating that it charges slower. But USB to a keyboard does not work.
Only 0 Ohm between pin 4 and 5 causes OTG mode so that USB data devices can be used. But then no charging is accepted by the Note 2014.
Look for xda-developer areas titled "fun with resistors" and "using OTG mode and charging at the same time" for a lot of information but no solution for the Note 10.1 2014.
I have tried the following resistor values:
28.7 k, 34 k, 40.2 k, 49.9 k, 64.9 k, 80.7 k, 100 k, 102 k, 124 k, 200 k, 365 k and 619 k Ohm.
I now just hope that Samsung has some yet unrevealed way to tell the Note 2014 that a new type of smart dock is attached, and that it will be launched soon.
I can imagine one reason for not making the earlier smart dock work with the Note 2014. The Note 2014 uses 5.3 V for charging to make charging more rapid, and Samsung might think it is not really in compliance with the USB specifications to distribute that as well to other USB devices. Just a guess...

Hi All, I'm about to get one of these as the screen of my S4 is broken and Samsung asks too much money to fix it Any developments on getting it to work with Note 10.1 2014?

What accesssories are you ordering with your Nexus?

I'm planning on ordering from Expansys and getting at least the MHL adapter (would the Expansys one work as well as the official Samsung one?), a car kit, and maybe this sleek looking case once it's in stock.
I would get the HTC MHL adapter. It looks much better and the ports are arranged more logically.

I'll be getting (when in stock) an extra battery
http://shop.htcpedia.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-battery.html
and another charger for it
http://shop.htcpedia.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-battery-charger.html
I have a soft pouch for when im out. I bought a usb connector so I can plug in a usb adapter for a mouse and keyboard or plug in a flash drive. I also bought a 7000mAh battery pack to charge it on the go. I did ponder on whether to buy a spare battery but that means turning the phone off, taking the battery out and changing it so a battery pack which can recharge a nearly empty battery at least 3 times makes more sense. It also has 2 outputs so you can charge 2 phones at once or power any usb device from it .
Im waiting until the samsung car dock and portrait multimedia dock are released. I was going to get an mhl adapter but I need a desk dock anyway and the docks for the nexus will have hdmi ports in them so you can output direct to a tv or monitor without the need for ugly connectors.
Mark.

Wow, didn't know they Nexus could act as a USB host. Does that mean you can read any file off a flash drive? What about portable hard drives (I'm assuming they would need external power)?
That battery pack looks nice, too bad they don't have it on expansys. It will cost me too much to ship each item from individual websites along with my Nexus
Edit: Just found the Usb host on the go thread and it seems that it is not supported out of the box (yet), you might need to flash a custom kernel for it to work until Google fixes it. That said I still ordered the cable

I just picked up a MilitaryShield screen protector and carbon fiber skin from amazon. I thought for $15 I couldn't go wrong.
telepathically sent with my Galaxy Nexus which is being imprisoned by FedEx
i still think what will be the best dock, this one:
http://shop.htcpedia.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-multimedia-dock.html
or this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Desktop-Dock-Galaxy-Nexus/dp/B006GJ5S3S
the 1st one has both HDMI & mini-USB.
the 2nd one is the official and uses the pogo pins but only mini-USB and audio jack.
my goal is connecting the nexus to my lcd tv with a controller such a usb gamepad.
any benefits for the pogo pins? should i connect MHL to the back of the dock?
i already bought the screen protector and mhl. will be buying a soft holster pouch if my droid x one doesnt fit in and probably some sort of case. maybe the one with the kickstand. and a battery
just bought a black leather fitbag case for it, also looking at buying a battery pack for it to charge on the go
Iv ordered a cheap ebay case, the leather flip one for when im out, £5 cant go wrong....
I want to be able to connect my Nexus to my Tv and watch videos and also play emulated games using controllers, so I'm getting the MHL Adapter and HDMI Cable. Free shipping on amazon? don't mind if I do.

For what you're using it for, the 2nd one won't work, unless you plug the mhl cable directly into the phone (the port should be open since it's in landscape). Everyone needs to keep in mind that the 2nd one only charges it. It WILL NOT connect to a computer for file transfer, nor will it support mhl/HDMI out.
In terms of ease of use and function, I prefer the 2nd one though, because (going off how the nexus one worked) you can just drop the phone in/take it out one handed easily; no need to line the port up. This actually works better than the n1, since it would always fall over if you weren't careful (since it was oriented in portrait mode). In addition, the phone should automatically connect to the dock through bluetooth, which I loved on the N1.
Hope this helps your decision. Oh, and I'm definitely getting the official Samsung landscape dock
so, in the back of the official dock i can connect, for example, a gamepad/controller and since the dock is landscape, i can connect to the phone the mhl cable, is that right?

For the official portrait dock, you may or may not be able to connect everything to the back of the dock. It depends on if Samsung is foolish or not.
For the official landscape dock (with the pins) the back can ONLY be used for charging the phone. The controller and HDMI out would have to be placed in the port of the phone itself, assuming that it actually shows while sitting in the dock (I don't know if it even does). The whole point of this dock is to be a stylish desk clock/charger, and nothing else. (Again, going off of the nexus one dock. There's an extremely slight possibility that they've improved the pin connector tech, but as far as I know, it wouldn't be enough to port full video through)
So for your uses, get the portrait dock. It connects to the phone via usb, and while it may not be as fancy as the landscape one, it'll almost definitely be more useful to you.
thank you!
oh, lets say i use usb splitter on my nexus, the question is if the usb splitter still support so i can connect for example gamepad, keyboard and mouse ?

Well I know that a usb splitter will cover the gamepad, keyboard and mouse since they're all usb, but if you're considering a keyboard and mouse I'd say go for a bluetooth set. They connect extremely easily and work out of the box; I've tested it with my own mouse. Come to think of it, I'd say get a ps3 controller too. Then you could connect to the phone using bluetooth with the controller as well. Then you'd have no wires between you and the phone, which is slick in my opinion.
Of course if you don't have any of those and don't want to spend the money/already have a set you want to use then here's what you do: get something like one of these:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/29367-HT...HDMI-TV-Out-Cable-AC-M490-Reviews.htm#reviews
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/bizlink-mhl-to-hdmi-tv-out-adapter-black-p29839.htm
and connect it to the phone. Then if you still decide to do the usb route rather than bluetooth then connect your usb splitter to the adapter. That way the MHL adapter still can send out HDMI and send in the usb inputs from the splitter.
And you'll have a full game/workstation from your phone. Not sure how effective it will be (since the homescreen/some apps don't work in landscape) but it'll definitely be cool for games.

Actually, it's either MHL or USB. They use the same pins, so you can never get USB and MHL to work at the same time.
If you want HDMI output and controller input at the same time, Bluetooth is the only way to go.

Make sure it's a USB-OTG cable and not a simple adapter. That one doesn't say that it's OTG. May still be though.

So, I bought another, white, Samsung MHL 2.0 adapter that works with the S4, so you'd think it'd also work with the Note3, but all it does is REBOOTS MY NOTE3 when I connect it. I'm even using a new high-grade hdmi cable, the Note3's own A/C charger (and S3 usb cable) as is recommended, and have the interference shielding clip on the cable, but still no-go. WTF?

Dock MHL is confirmed working? I don't normally use docks, since I like to pick up my device while it's plugged in.
I was running a custom rom at the time but I downloaded r.i.p.d and watched it on my big screen and there was no lag with it, like when things start moving fast like the note 2 had. Plus u get the benefit of plugging USB stuff up

The newer MHL adapter is 2.0 (and the Note 3) which means it doesn't need to have the extra micro usb power supply connected. It's supposed to draw power from the source that your hooking up to. Maybe the power you were supplying was tripping it. Have you tried without it?

Reboots my phone even without the power connect. I'll test it with one other TV tomorrow, and if it still does it, I'm returning it. My box has the "genuine samsung hologram sticker" on it, so it's not a fake, but, it still doesn't work. Bummed - I wanted to do some gaming w/ sixaxis this weekend.
I had a mhl adapter made by rocketfish that I got when I bought my S2. It wouldn't work on my note 3. Turns out the micro usb plug has 5 pins and the N3 requires an 11 pin connector. Did some searching and bought and adapter from 5 to 11 pins on ebay for about 6 bucks. It works great now. I looked in best buy and the mhl adapter comes with this little connector now so you can use with any phone that is mhl compatible.
I use the black one posted above for my note 2 and 3, So it does work of that helps any.

I'm even using a new high-grade hdmi cable, the Note3's own A/C charger (and S3 usb cable) as is recommended, and have the interference shielding clip on the cable, but still no-go. WTF?
This shouldn't be that hard. Does anyone have a MHL HDMI that they've tested and KNOW works with their Note3? Thanks...

Are any of you on Kitkat 4.4.2 with this? and is anyone using a stock non-rooted Note 3 with this device? I have a Note 3 (stock, not rooted) and the original Appradio and it's a complete pig of a device. I installed the official app once, it worked once, no green snow like I used to get on my Samsung S2, but it will never ever reconnect again.
The killer is, I have ARliberator but it needs root and I can't root the Note 3 for ages (warranty etc).

Any full featured dock available (HDMI+USB OTG)

Hello,
Have been eyeing the device for a while now. Was planning to get Tab 7.7 earlier, but that screen size cannot be much used for office productivity. So have been summing up the budget for this one.
In my typical usage scenario, I have to keep it upright (for work or for presentations) connected with a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and display output to most common VGA projectors in case of presentations. Also would like at least one, preferably two USB OTG ports to connect my external flash/harddrive or any other accessories.
I believe the USB OTG and HDMI OUT functionality on this tablet is both handled by the MicroUSB connector at the bottom, correct me if I am wrong.
To envisage my needed accessory, is there any dock available, on which the tablet sits in the landscape orientation, connects via microusb connector, keeps charging and outputs the MHL HDMI disaply at the same time. On the back of the dock, supposedly should be the HDMI female connector, USB OTG port(s) and card reader ports. I know for connecting to a VGA projector I also have to use a HDMI male to VGA female adapter.
If such a solution is available, then I can think of it as a useful office productivity tool. I have seen some connectors like http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-OTG-SD-TF-Card-Reader-MHL-to-HDMI-TV-Adapter-for-Samsung-Note-2-S3-S4-/271284804413 but in my scenario , for plugging such a connector to tab 10.1, it should be lying flat on the table during any presentation or work, which is not practical and a workable position for anyone.
I have tried looking around but was not able to find such a dock, so thought to have some help from the community here.
Would love your ideas and opinions about it. Thanks for your answers.

An ideal dock like I am describing is available.....but sadly for iPad iPad2 iPhone4 S iPod.....http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Multi-function-Docking-All-in-one-HDMI-VGA-USB-Dock-iPad-iPad2-iPhone4-S-iPod-Stand/543638036.html?.....wish something similar can be made available for Samsung Galaxy Tab/ Galaxy Note series.
I have had my eye on this guy for dock use. Seems to be a good deal as well, compared to the Samsung version.

Hi Armageddon,
Thanks for the answer. I actually did my research and almost reached the same product as you have mentioned. Since you own a 10.1 2014 tablet, I believe this tablet does offer the same via standard 11-pin micro USB connector (instead of the propreitary Samsung connector used in earlier models).
I was able to find a couple of smart docks, which are advertised to work with GNII/III and Galaxy S3/S4, all of which I believe do have the 11-pin micro USB MHL connector. Please have a look at the following
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Smart-Multimedia-Dock-HDMI-USB-Dock-Station-for-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-2-Galaxy-S4-I9500-S3/1439104485.html
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/100-High-Quality-HDMI-Smart-Multimedia-Dock-Charger-Station-Cradle-For-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-2-II/1405399957.html
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Multimedia-Dock-station-for-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-II-2-N7100-S3-S4-with-audio-out-and/1422156460.html
All of them are advertised to do all the functions simultaneously at the same time , that is "OTG + HDMI + Charging".
I believe the docks i have found and you have mentioned on Amazon are the same , are they ? . I need to know
1. Have you tried this or a similar dock and found all functions to be working simultaneously and satisfactorily.
2. By a long shot, since S3/S4 also have an 11pin micro USB connector, have any of you tried or can comment on whether this dock would work with a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 tablet. Theoretically and technically , i think it should but need your advice. Would the tablet fit in snug in the connector space given on the dock.
Thanks for reading and your feedback.

Our tablet stay on the note II docks ? It never falls ?
Received the dock today. It works ok with Note 3 (charging, usb keyboard, output to tv) but not with note 10.1 2014. Oh well ...

It's a pity Samsung doesn't release a Transformer-style tablet/dock combo. Asus keeps having more hardware problems than Samsung, and Samsung seemed happy for a while to try out every possible form factor.
The new Transformer Infinity (TF701T) straight out of the box has all the functionality that OP requests. Unfortunately early batches of the Infinity have had problems with their dock connectors, so to replace my old Transformer Prime I'm seriously thinking of jumping ship and getting a Note 10.1. It seems much better suited for use in tablet mode (smaller bezels, lighter), but I would miss the dock...

It's only a 5pin(actually 4) connector. Such a dock should be possible with a switch to manually change between usb/hdmi/cardreader etc.
Anyone found anything that works?
Tested 2 docks from DX, so far kinda mixed results
one works kinda, has 2 x usb and both work, hdmi seems to output only at 720 p I think ( best way to check ??anyone??) , BUT charging isn't working it seems ( still testing, maybe trickle charge))
http://dx.com/p/5v-1000mah-mhl-otg-...on-for-samsung-i9300-i9500-n7100-black-238004
The other one
http://dx.com/p/mhl-to-hdmi-otg-card-reader-for-samsung-i9300-i9500-n7100-n5100-p3200-238273
The usb seems to work fine, same issue with charging, and I can't seem to get the HDMI to work, still working and testing on the last part
The ideal would be usb otg + charge ( would be nice if the charging wasn't mandatory ) + hdmi
Anyone found anything they can confirm works?
I think you cannot get 2A charging current while using usb for data. Probably data mode is limited to 500mA, or 900mA.
Samsung is releasing an ethernet adapter with 2 usb ports for the Nok Pro 12.2 if it's micro usb 2.0 it should work with our tablet

Wow, wicked !!! Did you happen to notice release date? Any product links?
Any news on that? Does it charge while using the usb-ports?
Has anyone tried one of the smart docks for the S3/4 and Note phones?
I'm going to go out on a limb and just try a OTG cable in one of the USB ports on the side and assume it might work.

Connecting USB storage Drive and HDMI out

Hi I just recently purchased the Samsung galaxy tab s 8.4. What I am wondering is how can I connect a full size usb flash drive? Can I buy any old cheap usb to micro usb adapter and it should work? Or do I need some sort of special type.
I was also wondering how I can get video out onto a TV through the HDMI port. Will any micro HDMI to full HDMI work? Or do I need a specific special type.
Thanks in advance for any help or input related to this.
Buy a media dock to use both mhl and otg simultaneously or an otg adapter for flash drives and a Samsung specific mhl/HDMI cable for video out.

Got mine off eBay....
eBay LINK ... MHL OTG Hub
Link to full eBay search... (choices bro)
.
.
.
I also use one like this at work... (don't need MHL there)
eBay link ... OTG Hub
It has 3 USB ports and several different card readers... I can run that with a 1 Terabyte Hard drive, 256GB Flash Drive , 128GB micro SD card , wireless keyboard and mouse... all running off that hub simultaneously.... all working as they should.
Pro Tip... Always use the MHL/OTG Power input when running powered devices... DON'T try to power from your tablet...
The first item I listed in this post (MHL OTG Hub) has a micro USB port... plug your Samsung charger in there before plugging in any other devices and before plugging into your tablet
The second item has its own dedicated power cord supplied with the device which can also be plugged into your Sammy charger to run the power side of the hub...
Failure to do this can burn out the 5 volt rail on your tablet... you will also notice all sorts of problems with devices not being recognized by the tablet when external power is not plugged into the proper port on the hub.
Many of these "hubs" come from China with sketchy instructions... they try but it gets lost in translation I suppose.
Here's what I learned over time...
when using a hard drive or wireless keyboard with a hub
plug in your external power to the hub first
then plug in your hard drive or wireless keyboard/mouse dongle
then plug the hub into the tablet
If you do things in the wrong order the tablet doesn't recognize the drive or device
Those steps are not necessary for memory cards and flash drives.

All im really looking to do is stream videos to my tv when I travel and connect a standard size usb flash drive. Thanks again ill probably just order that 1st one you linked me to because you say it works fine.
On a side note it kinda sucks how I cant even quote your post and reply without getting this message

Thats awesome its definitely a handy cord to have.
I was wondering if you know should pretty much any mhl otg hub work with the Tab S? There is several listed on eBay with various prices. Are all of them made equal? or is it possible that certain ones wont work. Ill probably just order the one you linked because you have confirmed it does in fact work with the Tab S even though its not listed as a compatible device.

Works... i used it just a couple hours ago to dump movie downloads onto my hard drive and clear up memory...
But now that you mention it... i haven't tried the MHL function to HDMI with the Tab S yet because i have chromecast now and I'll mostly stream from the hard drive right through to the chromecast.... i can test that tomorrow if you want a rock solid answer before you buy... i have a half day on the crane tomorrow so it would be after 12:00pm EST when i get home and try plugging it all in.
Any of the newer Samsung devices from the s2/note2 and up should have the dual functionality USB port. You can, with a good eye, and good lighting, look at the port and see the 2nd row of pins. If it has/supports mhl out, it will do simultaneous otg as well. This is exclusive to Samsung devices.

Hey man I just received my adapter in the mail today but the HDMI out is not working do you have any mtips on how to get it to work? I connect my power source first and then connect my HDMI but still nothing works. I bought the one you mentioned but its a bit different from what you have pictured. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Edit*
Ok I finally got it working. I had to connect my device to it first before the power source or it wouldn't work. I know you mentioned this can be hard on the battery but its the only way I got it working.
I connect my power source after the HDMI out is up and running but my battery seems to still be draining fairly quick. Does that mean the outside power source is doing nothing? Am I doing harm to my tablets battery?
hello, im thinking about buy one of these, my question is, does that white cable charge the device?
cause i want to charge the device while using this function, can anyone confirm this, and in case it doesnt charge, can we mod it to do it

Samsung Dex via HDMI requires a case with a cover!

So I purchased the Verizon LTE Tab S4. I have a Dex station already set up at the house which works great with my Note 8. However, when I plug my Tab S4 in I get an error stating "Samsung dex not available while cover opened."
Have any other Dex power users run across this? If so, have you figured out a way to disable this limitation?
I'm a soft tpu case kinda person and hate case covers. and so disappointed that I have to drop another $60-$150 for a case just so I can use dex at the house.
Additionally disappointed that they didn't make the tablet screen a keyboard/trackpad for when the HDMI is used for Dex.
I'm currently using DeX without any case without issues. Now I do have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard, but I do not have an HDMI connection right now.

Yes, same here. Dex on the tablet works fine (landscape only). The issue is when you try to use an external monitor.

I think you are probably using one of those custom USB-C to HDMI adapters that triggered dex on the S8/S9. When i used one of those, i got the error you are getting.
You need to use a regular adapter and it will work fine without the need for the book cover. Tested this myself as i have both types of adapters.

I'm confused. The "trigger" for the S8/S9/Note8 is that the USB -> HDMI adapter has to be powered (to power the phone). Even the DexPad won't work if the power supply is unplugged.
The new Tab S4 and Note 9 no longer have the power requirement to trigger Dex Mode. so connecting any simple Type C to HDMI adapter will give you the option to trigger Dex.
Could you link the model/type of adapter that you're able to use to trigger Dex on an external monitor? ALSO, is your Tab S4 plugged into the $150 keyboard (As the hard contacts appear to enable Dex to be mirrored to a monitor).
Went to BestBuy and tried one of their type-C to HDMI 4k adapters, and just like you said, it works perfectly! I was even able to use the tablet as a huge touchpad.

You want to use a plain vanilla USB-C to HDMI adaptor.
The one you have is for Samsung S8/S9 DeX and you do not need that capability. Unfortunately the one I have is no longer listed on Amazon here in the US. The only identifying mark is "Volt + tech" with the + plus sign above the "tech" portion.
I talked to Samsung support about Dex on an external monitor being blocked I got this reply.
"This model number EJ-FT830UBEGUJ is the one that allows all the feature to work on your Galaxy Tab S4. ^Marc"
Marc is giving the model number for the Tab S4 keyboard cover. Samsung Dex has now been blocked unless it detects the user has purchased the expensive accessory, thought once that's happened Dex is unlocked, so you don't need to keep the keyboard attached.

I have no idea where you got this incorrect information. I can use DeX on HDMI from my Tab S4 without the keyboard cover. In fact, I do not have the keyboard cover. And when connected by HDMI one can use the TAB S4 as a large trackpad.

As I said, I talked to Samsung support and that is what they said on the matter.
Unlike most people replying here I've actually checked what works and not said random stuff about adaptors.
This is what I know after experimenting with two Dex devices, one of which is a blocked Tab S4.
1) The Tab S4 can run Dex locally, it exits Dex instantly when any HDMI adapter is connected.
2) There's no difference between makes of adapter or if they're powered.
3) An unblocked Dex capable device starts Dex when it detects an external monitor and becomes a track-pad.
4) People in forums report owning an official cover unlocks the Tab S4 even when the cover is no longer attached.
5) The advice from the official Samsung support is to buy a keyboard cover to enable features.
I'd be be interested in talking to people who have bricked Tab S4 desktops and are about to attach a keyboard for the first time.
I'd also like to know about people who can use Dex on an EXTERNAL MONITOR without buying accessories. When and where were your devices sold?

As I said, I talked to Samsung support and that is what they said on the matter.
Unlike most people replying here I've actually checked what works and not said random stuff about adaptors.
This is what I know after experimenting with two Dex devices, one of which is a blocked Tab S4.
1) The Tab S4 can run Dex locally, it exits Dex instantly when any HDMI adapter is connected.
2) There's no difference between makes of adapter or if they're powered.
3) An unblocked Dex capable device starts Dex when it detects an external monitor and becomes a track-pad.

I've no idea why you're disagreeing with what other people have said, they are absolutely 100% correct. If you have one of the third party devices that enabled DeX on an S8 for example, the Tab S4 will complain about a cover. This is what happened with my Tab S4 and the old adapter I had for my S8+. I bought a new 3rd party adapter ("7 in 1 USB-C multi function") from Amazon and no longer get that message, DeX just works on an external monitor as it should. No cover, no keyboard needed.

Hi,
I have the official keyboard cover, and I have a non official USBC HDMI hub.
I cannot launch dex mode on an external monitor. But it works perfectly in mirroring mode.
This non official USBC HDMI hub works perfectly with my galaxy S9 on dex mode on a external monitor.
I spoke (a lot) with samsung customer service, and I had different answers.... as :
-if it works with the galaxy S9, it should work with galaxy tab S4
-Dex mode will only work with the official samsung usbc hdmi hub (99$)...
-we do not now, because this product is new, so we do not have information...
As a result, I still cannot use my usbc-hdmiu hub, and I do not want to buy another...

You need to simply purchase a simple USB-C to HDMI plug. That is it. No $99 USB-C HDMI hub necessary. The one I got was USD$17 from Amazon. You also do not need a cover. I do not have one on my Tab S4 and it plugs into the HDMI and works as a touchpad with DeX on the HDMI monitor. I have zero issues with the inexpensive USB-C to HDMI plug running DeX on the HDMI monitor.

SODIAL USB C Hub, Type C Hub to HDMI, 4 in 1 Combo with 2USB3.0 and PD Multifunction....... on Amazon..... Half the price of official adapter. Samsung Dex works perfectly on 46 inch non smart TV, it is powered with your tab S4 power adapter, and you can attach two external hard drives and mount them with Paragon. Got a brilliant 46 desktop. It was the third adapter I tried and the only one that didn't give me the dreaded message 'Samsung Dex not available while cover opened 'the moment you attach it.
I got my cable yesteday from Amazon. DeX mode works perfectly with it.

I have a USBC to HDMI adapter, and it allows a Note 9 to go into DEX mode. However when I plug a galaxy tab S4 into it, it EXITS Dex mode with the stupid "cover cannot be open" nonsense. This is just craziness. I really really wanted to like DEX, but at this point I have to give up and say, it's a load of marketing rubbish. Samsung: It's not up for you to decide when I want my device in DEX mode. Take a note from Microsoft, they don't tell users when their tablets should be in tablet mode.
BTW, I plugged these galaxy devices into a Samsung thunderbolt monitor j791, Samsung's premier USBC capable monitor, and NOTHING. WTF is this? How can Samsung not even support their own devices through USBC?
Use a magnet and place it near the USB-C connection. This will trick the tablet that the cover is closed.
Have you played with the "Auto start when HDMI is connected" setting?View attachment 4744136
